HELP PLEASE: Boot Loop - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there everyone,
Basically I was running cyanogenmod 10.1 on my galaxy s4 and i downloaded an up update from the Cyanogenmod updater (in settings). I then tried to flash this by TWRP but it failed and when I tried turning the phone on, it was stuck at the 'Galaxy S4 I9505' boot logo.
After that, I tried flashing my update.zip which I made from titanium backup but it kept failing to mount or repartition the system and cache.
So then I wiped davlic cache, cache and data but still
It didn't work (kept failing when repartitioning). So then I wiped system and now after browsing through the forum I realized that this wasn't the right thing to do as I don't have system files.
I can access TWRP recovery and download mode.. Could someone please help me in simple steps as I am a noob
Thank you in advance

You can flash a rom with adb sideload, see for how to http://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j...v4l4QSOgEwWvPXvTXm_X0Kw&bvm=bv.49784469,d.ZGU and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318497.

Would this work if I have no system files? I have tried flashing my update.zip again but get the error 'could not mount /system'
I also have only about 200mb in the internal sdcard but I have a micro SD also

I'm familiar with Odin so I'll try flashing one on through there. Are stock Roms downloadable from samfirmware.com?
Thank you

[Q] Booting Problem

Hey Guys,
i have a problem with flashing custom recovery on my I9505(jfltexx).
When i flash "DBT-I9505XXUBMEA-20130601103235" via Odin and in addition the "CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505" my phone boots up, most of the time but not all the time. Now when i try to flash custom Recovery via Odin, my phone stucks at the Samsung Galaxy Logo and it wont continue. Even if i enter the standard recovery from Goomanager and i select "reboot system now" it stucks on the Logo!
Any Help?
Thanks in Advance

Ok now i get it as per what i see i can still get your device back to normal but myte take multiple try rest assured it will work
1st flash a stock firmware again (not rooted pure stock) this time using pit file along with firmware
and while flashing the firmware using odin and pit do check re-partition also
Note with out pit file do not check the re-partition box
and once the flashing is done device should boot if its not booting
go to stock recovery like how i told u earlier and do factory reset and wipe cache
and reboot
and tell me the status.. all the best

In Odin
PDA - u should select firmware stock one

Re- partition should be check follow the image and flash
If Re-Partition is checked u must have pit file also do not forget that else u myte brick ur device

Based on what you said, it seem like you still have all the partitions intact. Just that they are empty right now.
Did you do a full backup before all this problem happen? Or did you do a custom backup?
Are your backups stored in external memory and is a full backup? If so, try using custom recovery to restore your backup?

Chill. Your phone is definitely not bricked. I encountered your problem before when i was experimenting with something.
- Right now, boot to whatever recovery that you have. Try to wipe cache, dalvik, and any other partition if possible.
- After that, boot to download mode and try to flash STOCK rom using odin. Check that flash was success.
- Try to boot your phone and report here on what happens.
Edit: You might want to consider restarting your computer and changing usb port. "Faulty" Usb port will affect the flashing part.

Behave your speech smart guy, they are trying to help!
general rule on how to fix a bootloop:
1- Wipe data and cache. If not,
2- Restore a nandroid backup if available. If not,
3- Flash stock firmware, If not,
4- Flash stock firmware with pit file (you can try pit file alone).

thanks, its just strange that the 2-3 roms i have tried have all returned that error message, I will download the rom you linked and get back to you.....
is that rom to go on with odin, as currently i have stock recovery......?
no joy with the linked rom......
same thing happened, i can successfully get it rooted and flash recoveries no problem......
is it possible its a sd card problem.....
also, when i go to restore the back up i make before flashing the rom, it reverts back to a brand new handset, so i need to set it all up again, put in my Google account details etc.......all my apps return obviously, but this isn't meant to happen is it......
it really is confusing me, all the other devices I have had in the past and currently have flashed ok........
when i wipe before the flash, its just the default factory reset, cache, dalvik I do , is this correct?
That should be fine, it is possible the sd card is corrupt or not communicating properly with the recovery. You could always put the rom on the internal sd card.... Just don't factory wipe or you could loose the rom you are trying to flash...
That didn't work either......so frustrated with this.......
Can someone go through the exact procedure....I know there are guides but personal experience s are best.....

thanks....
I have been using twrp mostly....i don't believe the default wipe setting includes the system partition format...........could the absence of this formatting cause problems every time?
finally managed to flash a custom rom.......
the trick was to install the zip without any sort of wipe, then do the wipes after successful installation......
weird eh....

HELP i9500 wont boot!

Hey guys, my phone will boot past the i9500 logo, but it wont get past the Samsung logo. This happened after I installed a custom rom, but after I flashed it back to stock, it continued to do this. I live in America, and I haven't been able to find an American kernel, so I flashed the open kernel. So let me know if you could help or know how to fix it. Thanks,

first try to wipe dalvik-cache and /cache in recovery. if it doesn't work wipe whole /data and it will definitely work
and what do you mean by open kernel?? the one from stock rom ? pls tell me you didn't flash any i9505 kernel

no, It wasn't a i9505 kernel, but I tried to wipe everything multiple times, and It still wont work.
I flashed it to stock again, and it still wouldn't work, but I noticed that it says it cant mount efs or data when im in recovery. that and while its stuck on the Samsung logo, the blue led stays on.

Just install stock rom with odin, do not check repartition or use pit. just regular flash, should work.

Major Problem using TWRP

Hey guys, I am not new to this scene and have been running, flashing, roms since the S2. Today I ran into a major problem I cant seem to fix. I am running TWRP 2.5.0.2, always have for about 4 months with no issues. Today I did a complete Titanium Backup + recovery backup of my rom. After that I wiped for a fresh new rom install and noticed the rom I placed onto my internal storage is not there (it was def there in its own folder but through TWRP its not there). No biggie right? Just mount USB storage and put it somewhere else that TWRP can get to, but then USB wont mount on Windows now. No biggie right? Ill just restore the rom, put it in another directory, then wipe and reflash. However none of my backups are showing up when I hit restore, I had like 3 backups and everything is gone.
At this point what do I do? I tried everything to mount usb from recovery but windows wont take it (win 7). Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Nevermind guys I was able to get around it by putting the SD card from my S4 into the S2 and putting the rom files into another location. Once that was done placed it back into the S4, booted into recovery and flashed it. (phew!)

wiped partition cache

Did you do an internal 'sd card'/media data wipe?
Best bet would be to Odin back to stock and start from scratch:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573
Then from there just use casual to root and install TWRP in one easy step and you're back:

I know what I did, I was using Touchwiz and instead of doing a regular wipe I did a format and input "YES". I heard TW has major issues with this and thus screwed me up completely.
To add to my list above I tried this method and also did not work. http://androidfannetwork.com/2013/05/02/fix-your-soft-bricked-att-samsung-galaxy-s4/
Sean, I flashed from Odin like 3 times, how can I install TWRP if I cant get the phone to load up (boot loop)- Ill read up on casual. Thanks.

Did you do a factory reset in the stock recovery after Odin? That'll usually get you past the boot loop.
Should I ODIN with the RE-Partition Option?
Just Odined again and no dice. I booted into stock recovery and noticed after wiping factory I get "Can't open /efs/log/boot_cause" which pointed me to this fix someone on the Galaxy note forum said they did and it worked but I dont understand the steps, need some elaboration.

Yep did that mulitple times, also did wipe cache partition in the same stock recovery. I get to the Samsung logo where the blue halo spins around the name, then it freezes there and reboots.
Hmm, never had to mess with EFS stuff on our phones before.
Did you make a backup ever in TWRP by chance?
Sorry if you tried the stock recovery options there's not much more I'm familiar with.
The good news is since you were able to Odin and get 3e back, you are technically warrantied again and could work with AT&T to get a new phone since your phone just stopped working out of the blue one day

LOL thanks, yes I may have to do that. I had a backup and it was wiped.
Anyone have any suggestions at all? I can't be the only one who has had this boot-loop / partition problem without a fix... or maybe I am lol.

Try flashing using cwm. It'll probably work fine. Then you can go back to twrp. That's worked on other devices. Seems one you flash it once with cwm then twrp works from that point forward. Idk why

Did your odin flashes include the pit files ? Have you tried flashing twrp or cwm with odin?

I tried flashing with a PIT file I found online but it fails through ODIN everytime. I tried on multiple versions of ODIN as well. I also cant seem to find readily available PIT files to test as well, (perhaps the one I used does not work). Also I did try to flash a CWM through ODIN but failed, but again there isnt anything that I have read that says "hey you can do this that way and it will work".
From what I understand I need to be rooted to install CWM or TWRP, and since I unrooted to try and fix the problem I cannot root myself through conventional methods. Everything I found online requires the phone to completely start up. (to the menu screen etc)
What stock firmware are you flashing with odin? I get firmware from sammobile.com. since you had a custom recovery I'm guessing you where on mdl firmware to start with.

I never flashed a custom recovery through Odin < I can try that though, where can I get one? Im assuming this firmware will have root with CWM or TWRP?
Ive only flashed using official Samsung firmware from sammobile.com I tried both that are available for SGH-I337 with the PIT file as well and no dice.

Do you know what firmware you were on? Was it mdl or mf3?

Think I've bricked my phone. Need some help, new to all this!

Hey guys little info,
Samsung S5 SM-G900F
Managed to root it successfully, tried to get Xposed framework up and running.
Xposed framework not compatible with my version, did some reading and it pointed me to manually putting in the framework for xposed using TWRP.
Problem is after TWRP came up, I navigated to "xposed-v79-sdk23-arm.zip" all unzipped with no problems annnnddd pop. Bricked.
Tried firmware recovery on Kies, after yet more googling I found a .tar to restore it but Odin is having non of it! Need some proper help I have definitely bitten off more than I can chew!
.Tar used: -------\Downloads\Flash Samsung SM G900H tar via odin\G900H\G900HXXU1BOA7_G900HOXY1BOA7_G900HXXU1BOA7_HOME.tar.md5 (probably wrong model right? G900F=/G900H)
Thanks in advance friends!
Yea, you flash G900F's with G900F firmware, not G900H...

Double check it says G900F in download mode, if yes, try flashing this PIT file at the same time as the ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2721101&d=1399024091
PIT in PIT section in ODIN 3.11.1
ROM in AP section
Flash together
Or download the ROM that the phone was originally running
Sammobile .com
or
samfirm tool

Same error, bar gets right to the end on the screen while in download mode before Odin says FAIL and gives the error
Flash the pit file in ODIN and select Re-Partition. http://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30119

No, nothing special needs done usually, everything in ODIN should be left default, phone should be in download mode, ODIN should highlight the COM port at the top, and .MD5 ROM should be in AP, hit start, and it should flash and complete
Does the phone definitely say G900F in download mode?
And which carrier is it with, which ROM was originally installed?
Unbranded or Carrier branded etc?

Model number deinfitely says SM-G900F on the screen and behind the battery. Need to flash the PIT you gave me with this new ROM? Or just use the ROM?

Try without first, if it still fails, try with
If that still fails, try flashing PIT on it's own, then ROM after
Finally getting a pass in Odin, just lokoing at the samsung logo screen though. Left it charging for a bit. Next steps if it still wont boot after getting an Odin pass?

Boot to recovery and factory reset, could be hanging on whatever was running previous, ODIN does not reset, it just overwrites the ROM
Give it 10 mins for first boot though, shouldn't take that long, but can take a while
Holding volume up power and home brings the logo screen up then goes black, continuing to hold gives me the logo screen again. Alternatives to boot to recovery?
There is a "NAND erase all" option in ODIN, but without a backup it could be risky, unsure if it wipes EFS partiton
Other members have reported success and no issues afterwards, but read some warnings saying it could wipe EFS which contains radios and IMEI
Without which, your phone can't make calls/texts etc
I'd flash that ROM that passed, along with PIT this time, looks like we're slowly getting somewhere
I've had to flash the same ROM a couple of times to get it to boot on a downgrade
---
Another option would be to flash TWRP from ODIN and wipe from TWRP

Still not booting, and now Odin is staying on reset!
I manually put it back into download mode and it will continue to pass but otherwise it will again freeze on the boot screen. I have a TWRP-2.8.7.0 klte.img.tar that I tried to flash also with the same result. Have to manually reset before it will PASS!
Give 3.0.2.0 a shot
https://dl.twrp.me/klte/twrp-3.0.2-0-klte.img.tar.html
With ODIN 3.12.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3804544&d=1467772303
Disable "Auto Reboot" in ODIN
Flash TWRP
when it's completed the flash, remove USB and pull the battery to power off
Replace the battery
Boot immediately into recovery, see if it lets you in then
There is also this you can try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/g900f-debrick-img-lollipop-t3240626
Although download mode is still working

Booted into recovery using TWRP. Disabling auto-reset worked a treat.
This is what its reading on the Factory reset
"could not mount /data and unable to find crypto footer.
failed to mount '/data' (invalid argument)
unable to recreate /data/media folder
updating partition details...
failed to mount '/data' (invalid argument)
...done
unable to mount storage
failed to mount '/data' (invalid argument)
full SELinux support is present.
unable to mount /data/media/twrp/.twrps
MTP enabled
failed to mount '/data' (invalid argument)
formatting cache using make_ext4fs...
updating partition details...
failed to mount '/data' (invalid argument)
///done

Googled the problem, converted the Cache and Data to FAT and it allowed me to wipe the data.
So the cache, data, and dvalik(sp??) Have been wiped. Now its failing encrpytion on startup.
BUT WE'RE PAST THE BOOT SCREEN! <3

Sounding better, OK, from TWRP, WIPE > Advanced Wipe
Check:
Dalvik/ART
SYSTEM
DATA
INTERNAL STORAGE
CACHE
Wipe those together
Boot back into download mode ignoring messages about having no OS, Flash the stock ROM with ODIN again
Hopefully this time it will boot
