Excuse my ignorance, I am still new to the android world, as moving over from the iPhone. My question is obviously if I use the ROM which is based on TOUCHWIZ, I can still use "smartview" and the other fun but gimmicky features of the s4.... but when I go to an AOSP/AOKP ROM, I apparently lose this. Is there a way that I can get these features back as a mod with the AOSP roms? I have googled and searched, but haven't found anything definitive.
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction if this could be done?
Thanks
Can't be done (or close to impossible). Those features are built into the touch wiz frame work and are not directly transferable to an AOSP rom

Thanks for the answer... I know its gimmicky, but I'll stay on a touchwiz rom for now... thanks again...
I think b-dub's Google Edition rom is tw based, and he might try and port those features later, but as of now, there is nothing like that yet!

Hey, I'm having some trouble finding a full AOSP 2.3 Gingerbread ROM with zero modifications to styling. I obviously want one that has all the necessary drivers for the hardware, but I don't want "extras". I've seemingly tried them all, and the closest to full AOSP I could find was bcnice's ROM, which he hasn't updated in months. The most up to date, closest to AOSP I've found is the Evervolv 1.0.1b4, but I'm getting tired of flashing the stock font pack every time I try a new update, and I don't like that is has its "own launcher".
Are there any fully functional 2.3 ROMs available that are 100% AOSP, or does everyone add their recommended programs and styling? It feels like I'm getting a carrier update lol.
What you are looking for just doesn't exist yet. Closest thing available are the Roms you already tried or this one below, but many things don't work yet like front cam, gps, etc....

Cool, thanks. Looks like that one's been updated to fix the issues I remember with it before. I'll give it a shot!
Just out of curiosity, why isn't there a 100% AOSP rom? Is it because there is little dev interest? Would it be very difficult to do a straight port? It seems like maybe CM would release a straight port before they started adding their stuff... but I'm a newb and unsure of how the process works really.

I'm using the SalvageMod one mentioned earlier now, and it's VERY stock. The only things that are different that I can see are some custom wallpapers (doesn't really count as not-AOSP) and the semi-transparent notification drop down.
kommydroid is completely stock 2.3 with the only mod being the boot animation.
KommyDroid Looks pretty good... when I get my new Evo from Sprint, I'll try flashing it.
Hi all,
I once more turn to XDA gurus for some advice and also questions. Let me start with saying that I have very basic experience with android phones: my main phone is an iPhone but I love to play with Android devices to fill in the iOS blanks. I own a Samsung Infuse (with a custom ROM but very unstable) and briefly had an HTC One but returned it.
Anyway, I bought an AT&T S4; it's unlocked and works great. However I'm in Canada on Rogers and couldn't care less about the bloatware installed on it. Here come the questions:
- Does anyone know of a way to install the stock Rogers ROM on this phone (more like where to get it)?
- Alternately, would you recommend to install another ROM?
Here's the thing: a week after I bought mine, Google announced the Google editions; would have known I would have waited to get that.
- Would it be recommendable to flash the Google ROM on my phone?
- Would there be a way to install some of the Samsung SPKs on such a ROM (I could never seem to do it on my Infuse)?
I know how to flash a ROM, and it's well documented in the Forums. I'm more after opinions; my experience with flashing ROMs on my Infuse has been spotty at best. Seems like no matter what I did, the phone would become unusably unstable after a while. This scares me because it seems like the Infuse is one of the most modded phones out there... The S4 is very impressive and I don't want to hinder it's performance in any way.
If none of this is doable/recommendable, then I might sell this one and pay the extra $100 and get the Google edition.
I appreciate any input!
Thanks
Well, I know it's not polite to bump your own post, but I would really appreciate some feedback.
And actually I'll add a bit more to it: let's say I either try the Google ROM or decide to buy a Google Edition, there are some pretty cool apps included with the Samsung version (such as multi window and air gestures). Is it possible to have those available on the Google Edition/ROM?
Thanks and sorry again for my lack of knowledge in the area...

Consensus with the GE ROMs for the S4 are that they're WAY too stripped down in comparison to other AOSP options (of which GE is NOT, it's actually TW disguised as AOSP). I, personally, would avoid using GE and instead opt for something like AOKP if you want that same feel. I just flashed FoxHound and really like the hybrid aspect of it in the fact that you keep all the gimmicky TW features (the hover and voice stuff as well as multi-window), the menu structures are similar, but it brings all the bonuses that having an AOSP ROM does. There are some extra steps involved which @Axman has taken his time to explain (you have to manually input your APN), but the end result is worth it.
Good luck and read around.

well spoken my friend. Thanks
Thank you very much for the clarification. I was actually in the process of reading Axman's posts. To be honest I'm totally overwhelmed. I didn't imagine it to be so complicated; I'm really torn between ROM and keeping stock because of the TW cool stuff... I will keep reading around as all good n00b should.
Thanks!

It's much less complicated than it seems, but you do need to follow the steps as outlined or you could end up with anything from a borked flash to a bricked phone depending on what you're trying to do. I recommend playing with a i337m ROM that is TW-based for your first, just to get the hang of things as it'll provide the least steep learning curve. Go for these steps at first:
1. Enable Developer Options (go to Settings/About/tap on build until it says they're enabled)
2. Run one click root/recovery from Adam Outler
3. Transfer and flash ROM of your choice
Just know that people flash for different reasons ranging from wanting less bloat to more battery life to a morbid case of flashaholism (such as myself and @TheAxman). There's nothing saying you have to go balls to the wall here and you may find yourself completely happy with the stock ROM and a better kernel. Just read up and it'll make perfect sense.
Last word of advice: have Odin and the stock ROM on hand so you can flash back to stock if necessary. Some ROMs don't play well when flashed on top of others, even if you do a full wipe.

I was actually in the exact same situation as you.
However, I decided to flash a TW based ROM to keep all the cool Samsung features.
I'd recommend any of the Stock Based ones here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2312444
Just do your research and look for the features you need.
Thanks a lot guys! I'll be doing some reading but at least I know where to look.
One last thing: I keep seeing this loki thing around. Since I'm on an att version I got that I need it, but what exactly is it and where can I get it? I see a lot of references to it, but I can't seem to find a download link or a tutorial on it...
Thanks again!

Don' t take the loki thing and run with it..if you are rooted and have recovery installed, flash the rom of choice and use a att kernel that already has been loki'ed.
Simple. That way you will never go wrong.
The Ax says this is my method of choice. Could care less about loki.
I recommend cm10.1 . It is aosp based, tins of features, fast, and just nice to use. I use it on my att sgs4 right now. It is nightly release but it is VERY STABLE. Ge is just tw with an aosp fanboy shirt on .lol.

Hi all,
I have had my one for a while now and have been lurking around the forums for the most part. I have done S-OFF, Rooting, Recovery and many other tweaks. Now that 4.2.2 is hitting the rom scene for us I am wanting to dive into a rom but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the options.
Obviously the ROMS fall into 2 categories of sense and vanilla and there is obvious advantages to both sides. I want to try a more factory build so I have been considering flashing the recent dump of the GE One but there are some things like Pie control and custom DPI settings that I very much want to use and would like it if they were baked in rather than needed me to side load.
I am hoping that you all can give me some advice on some good 4.2 Vanilla roms to try out. Maybe Kang, Paranoid, CM... and I know there is a lot of other well known ROM makers around here with ROMS I do not recognize the names of (Carbon, Viper, Revolt). So if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.
I am on the verge of the GE rom but going to wait for stock 4.2.2 then decide after if that helps

Yeah I wouldnt mind waiting but I dont mind flashing back and have been looking forward to trying out stock or AOSP on the one for a while just not sure where the various AOSP roms stand right now as far as ease of use, bugs, and general smoothness.
Just try out a few and see which ones you like

This.
Once you've got the hang of flashing ROMs and using titanium backup to move your apps across them, you'll have no problem changing between ROMs regularly. Once you find something that works for you, stick with it for a while then see if anything else grabs your attention.

I am currently using ViperOne ROM, and love it. Its very smooth and offers a huge amount of customization options.
Aside from the above, I also can highly recommend Android Revolution HD, and TrickDroid. Both are very smooth, stable, and have large followings with great dev support right here on XDA. On a side note, Viper and TrickDroid do have close ties from a developer standpoint. Viper is the ROM intended to offer total customization, where as TrickDroid is a more stock ROM.
Either way, Ive tried a lot of ROMs on my One but the above three have really stood out to me.
Hope that helps you in some way. Were pretty lucky in that our device has a lot of excellent devs working with it. :victory:

Hello,
I would like to download and install a custom ROM for my Galaxy S4 I9505.
Here is the list of desirables for it:
Ultra stable.
Buttery smooth 0 lag.
NOT TouchWiz based.
MUST have all Galaxy S4 features like air gestures, air view, smart stay/pause and so on.
MUST support LTE.
MUST have all working features!
MUST include (or support) the default Galaxy S4 camera app.
Yes I have looked on XDA and galaxys4root.com to try and find it myself but galaxys4root.com is limited and XDA has way too many to sift through and narrow down, I'm not just lazy!
All help on this is appreciated, if this ROM doesn't actually exist yet, get making it because it's the perfect combination!
Thank you to the mastermind who finds a ROM fit for my specification
While I agree I would like to have such Rom, true fact is that it does simply not exist.

There are some good roms around that come close to what you want. Just try a few and maybe use a custom kernel and you`ll find the right combo to suits your needs. Looking for that is part of the fun

I'm very picky unfortunately... I don't understand why there isn't yet a ROM that has a nice sleek UI, is blazingly fast and has an insane amount of features including Samsung features like air view/gestures etc.
I also get bored of ROMs and kernels very quickly because I miss one thing or another :/

There are: like Omega v11 is very good and customisable, Android Revolution is close to stock with tweaks, Wanam Lite is good. You have to try them yourself bro cause everyone has a different setup and needs.
There is no 'prefect' ROM as everyone has needs and wants, in order to find the ROM that best fits your needs and wants you will have to try them all with the many different kernels. Me I only use deviant development roms, and pacman or domination (they are merging so doesn't matter.) But others may only use cynanogen because we all like something different and have found our 'perfect' ROMs

This is an honest question and I'm genuinely curious. Why is anyone flashing ROMs on this beast?
On all my previous devices I have flashed ROMs (usually AOKP) because of the added options/features, and/or to change things like icons/notification bar/notification window hacks/etc, etc... and also to speed up the device. But on this phone that's all possible on the bone stock ROM (with root of course). I've never seen this many settings and possibilities on a stock device, and for the first time since my very first smartphone I've had no desire to flash a ROM. As far as performance I really don't see how it could get much faster.
I've seen countless threads where people are just messing up their phones and I'm wondering how it's all worth it. Granted, if you know what you're doing it's very difficult to brick in the first place, but regardless, what are the benefits??
Just an honest question don't be too harsh.

Xposed has made custom roms fairly unnecessary in general. Some people just like that stuff built in though.

Yeah I was thinking of Xposed in particular...it's incredible. I guess I could understand wanting those features baked in, but even then it's so incredibly easy to install and use xposed...I just don't get it. Aside from one single thing - finding a battery themer that works - I now have the phone looking and behaving exactly as I want it.
I flashed just to try them out. Personally Im still running a rooted/debloated/stock odexed MJ7 that is just modified using xposed framework and some modules. Stock has been the most reliable...fastest performing ROM for this phone IMO. I tried others and may still try new releases, but at this point...my setup works for me. Using GEL, and xposed framework, AOSP messaging, AOSP browser, hangouts with sms integration, Exdialer themed to look like kit kat...so I see no need to have a custom rom...I would end up doing the same mods that I have on my stock one....only difference is...no bugfree.
:good:
I've been flashing ROMs since my incredible years ago. I just don't feel right running stock anymore. Even if its just mental and I know I could get most of that stuff from xposed, nothing like getting rid of all your crap and starting fresh with a new ROM haha.
