Hi everyone..I have the nexus 7 about a month now and i decided to o/c a bit for the main cause is gaming and surfing the net.
I am very satisfied by the device so far.
I want to keep my stock rom and the only thing i need is to o/c the cpu and gpu in order to achieve better fps in certain games.
Is this possible? e.g the google's stock rom (4.2.2) and for example a kernel? (faux-trinity e.t.c.).
I understand i must root my device but i don't know if i can keep my stock rom and o/c at the same time.
Thank you in advance
Short answer: Yes.

Highly possible. Check out Franco.kernel and it's premium app on the playstore you'd essentially have full control over gpu/cpu anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct. You can use ROM toolbox to OC. There are also many other apps.

Thanks all for your help. So i need to root it first and then flash a kernel?
The rom toolkit or any other app won't let me overclock with the stock kernel is that right?
I think the franco kernel won't allow overclocking correct me if i am wrong

Normally I swap Roms like a mad man but after a lot if experimenting I been on Cm7.1 Rc1 and I curious how do I know what kernels are compatible with what Roms some aren't to specific. I'm just trying to get the Max battery life I'f anyone knows a rom or a kernel that helps maximize that let me know ty. P.s sorry for noob question

the kernel will say cm7,aosp,sense,miu etc as well as which version of android it supports(froyo, gingerbread) your best bet is checking faux's cm7/aosp kernel thread in dev section, thederekjays kernel is also a winner and should be checked out.

There are only two kernels for our phone. Sense kernels and asop/cm7 kernels.
However, there are two different kernel version for asop .32 and. 35
The op will designate which it is and what it is used for. Just read carefully and you wont have a problem.

Hy,
in a few days i get my new Nexus 10 and than i want to undervolt it to expand the battery.
So what do i need to do it? is this the right way?
1. use the toolkit and use point 8 to get all necessary parts.
2. use this Script to undervolt
greetings
Bootscreen
If you are willing to root, you can flash KTManta kernel or Franco kernel. They both have fairly in depth voltage controls.

not worth installing it, latest stock ROM is faster compared to it, also its not stable, overheats easly and you can get random FCs - reboots, i'd recommend using latest stock kernel.
your phone will generate more heat on 1.248 mhz, so you'll get low performance compared to stock 1.000 mhz CPUs and it will reduce your battery - CPU life.
If you still want init.d and other kind of stuff custom kernels has to offer, try hellfusion #50, its the fastest custom kernel in my opinion, though i didn't test any custom kernels in last 2 months

Read again, try hellfusion #50, I could play jetpack joyride without any lag, except when game switches between textures (thats kind of due to RAM bottleneck)
Hellfusion #50 Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1891682&highlight=hellfusion
And also keep in mind no kernel is good without tweaks, I'd recommend fly on mod and v6 supercharger [do not use fly on mod ram manager while v6 supercharger ram fixes are active]
You should also try defferent governors and I/O schedulers, I used antutu benchmark to test results with different I/O - governor combinations. Some of the kernels give low performance on smartassv2, while others give the best performance the kernel could give, so you'd better try all of them.
Galaxy y has very low internal storage, so try to keep it clean (when theres 30 mb empty or so, my phone gets lag spikes while gaming)
The kernel I gave you above has ext4 support. So use repencis ext4 converter or any other converters that convert system, data and cache partitions to ext4, then REMOVE EXT 4 JOURNALISM (IT MADE MY PHONE A LOT FASTER)
Ext 4 journalism disabling script : http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2009287&d=1370093464

Running ktoonsez kernel and it has been great. Battery life seems the same (this is going to depend on what governor you select and what OV/UV...I'm on ktoonservativeq) as stock kernel but much smoother and way more options. Have not tried agat63's yet but I'm sure it is solid as well.
ktoonsez kernel thread
Ktoonsez !!

faux123 003 kernel has gave me the best battery life so far.. ktoonsez kernel ran good also but i got better battery life with faux kernel.. but kernel run diff for everyone.. one kernel mite run perfect for one and not the other.. test a few and find one that works well with your phone
The best kernel is which ever one works best for you.
Everyone uses their phone differently and every phone has minute manufacturing differences which make the best kernel for me not the best kernel for you.
Try them all for a few days and you quickly find the one that is best for you.

Currently thinking about flashing a kernel so I can have some overclocking abilities. Prolly going to flash AGAT Gs4 v3, hopefully there are no bugs left. Currently rooted in mdc still, with hot spot mod. Using Team Win Recovery. Any concerns or compliments before I flash? Had problems before with kernels on a Gs3 that hard bricked device, but That was back when I didn't know a whole lot about flashing with Samsung devices.

I use ktoonsez right now and it's awesome~! It's very stable, allows for granular control over governor, schedular, and voltage settings. I highly recommend it.

It says must have touch wiz Rom. The TW is stock rom isn't it not? I also contemplated trying this one, it s just that AGAT seems more of a stock kernel?

TW rom is anything not AOSP/AOKP and based off Touchwiz (yes, stock rom is a TW rom). There are numerous custom TW roms in Dev section. Also, either agat63, faux123, or ktoonsez TW kernels work fine with stock rom. They will have different results and vary from device to device. Only way to find out which will work better for you is to flash them.
Currently I'm running ktoonsez TW kernel on stock rom but used faux123 kernel on my S3 and it worked great so will probably try it as well.
Flashing to ktoonsez, see you on the flip side. ..

yea you need the latest supersu. I'm on ktoonz now and it's wonderful. I do get some force closings here and there but idk what to attribute that to. faw faux also has a kick ass kernel that has dynamic fsync among other things

I do have the latest super su. The notification isnt really a bother. It get s to hang out up there with the mdl update. Seems like this turned into my own kernel test topic only had one reboot but that was cuz the battery died. I think, phone wouldn't turn back on until I plugged back in. Weird though couldve swore I had 20% Battery left.
Btw, this kernel is pretty sweet so far, it s funny because my desktop has only a mere 2.3ghz processor, and I'm getting my phone up overclocked to 2.1ghz. Haven't really went higher than that even though you can.
