I for one find comparing 10" screen tablets with 7" ones simply absurd..
You either need a 10" screen or a 7" one.
I myself think that 10" is the bare minimum size for a "general purpose" tablet's display, ideally I would want a bigger one if it wasn't heavier and had the same battery runtime. 7" is good only as an e-book reader.

Tab 10.1 is a great device.
Keeping it because I really do want a 10" screen.... And ordered a Nexus 7 too. I'm not sure about the 7" size, in some ways it will bother me for sure, but in other ways it may turn out to be more useful, lighter, more pocketable, I guess I will find out in a few weeks. My tab 10.1 has gotten super laggy, while my galaxy nexus has worked really, really, really well, so for a couple of hundred, I'm willing to try something new. I know I could flash a custom rom, maybe one of these days I will, but I need the camera to function for video calls, so I haven't looked into it much.
Personally I'll keep my tablet until it dies.
Maybe selling mine. The Tab is awesome and there's no doubt the xda peeps will get Jelly bean on it soon. But the Nexus 7 format factor is just right for me. Like the Kindle Fire I always wanted.

Count me in on getting both. I've had my GT10 for about 9 months now, but during that time I had a Nook Color, and just in the last three weeks I got a Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Both are great devices, and both are now on craigslist.
I agree with the post above that comparing 7" and 10" tablets is ridiculous. They serve different purposes. But I will point out that many people are making the same point that they don't need a 7" device because it's halfway between a phone and a 10". That's silly and based on the fact that 10" has become a standard for tablets simply because that was the screens that the factories could build. But think about it: 7" is the most obvious size for a truly portable tablet: It fits in a pocket. 10" is not actually that great a size. It's too small for productivity and too large to take with you without a bag (unless you hold it in your hand the whole time). If I could have my way, I'd have a 3.5-4" phone, a 7" tablet (though I'd love to have less bezel since you can hold it in one hand with just the edges), and a 12-15" tablet with a docking station for productivity.
Don't get me wrong; I love my GT10, but once bigger tablets become the norm I'll gladly drop it (and my laptop) in favor of a true laptop replacement. One device for communication; one for entertainment, and one for productivity (and probably entertainment too!).
That's why both markets exist; whereas some would rather have the smaller size that it's pocketable others such as myself have no problems carrying the larger tablets in hand wherever we go.
I'm strongly considering getting one simply for the fact that it has ICS on it at a dirt cheap price, but I still see no permanent replacement for my Verizon LTE GT 10.1. Until there is another 10 inch tablet with ICS on it and a faster processor on Verizon LTE I'm sticking with my tab and its dated 3.2 OS.

Like Natalie Imbruglia, I'm torn. I went from the original Galaxy Tab 7" to the 10.1" and thought I could never go back to a 7" tablet after that, but it is a really nice bit of kit.
Two phrases spring to mind. Horses for courses, and swings and roundabouts.
I have just bought the 16gb nexus 7. I plan to use it in conjunction with my tab 10.1. Like for college I will use the 10.1 to type down notes as my hand writing is appalling but I can touch type fast on the tablet. I will also use the 10.1 for college text books (there all free on the college web site) which need a big screen. I will then use the nexus 7 for more gaming, lite reading and lite video watching. As some games just look better on a bigger than the 4.8inch screen on my s3, but playing games on the tab 10.1 is uncomfortable as it is too big for it, not to mention the 10.1's crappy GPU Also, I used the archos 70it for a year, which is a 7 inch tab, so I do like the 7 inch form factor although I do like the 10.1 inch screen as well
Well, for those saying they are going to carry it around: why don't you get a phone-enabled 7" tablet and carry only one device then?
I would do it myself and in fact I tried for a couple of days the original Galaxy Tab 7" but it was unfortunately just a tad too big for the fanny packs I always use... Half an inch smaller and that would have been my "smartphone" (BTW, since 7 months I am the enthusiastic owner of a Galaxy Note and I am hoping that the next iteration will have a bigger screen).
So, I still maintain that 7" tablets are useless but as ebook readers.
Or maybe it's just that I like to keep and carry around as few devices as possible (for example, iPods-like music players are worse than useless, to me, I keep all the music and videos I want on my Note and it also has FM radio and internet radio).
P.S. when I am out and about I use the Note as I would the Galaxy Tab 10.1" at home but of course once at home it's G.Tab only (unless, of course, I am using the phone capabilities or I need some data on the Note). The smaller screen (and that was the case also with the Galaxy Tab 7") is simply too limiting. Even as an ebook reader (one of the main uses I have for the G.Tab) screen real estate is a plus (and that was also one of the main reasons to choose the G.Tab, it was and still is one of the lighest 10" tablets around, possibly THE lighest).
I havent decided just yet. If I do decide to buy one I have a feeling that I would be using the tab 10.1 at home and the n7 while out to read books and browsing the web and what not.
Although if I find myself using the N7 more often then yea ill probably sell the tab 10.1 and at the least it should cover the cost of the tablet.
I'm getting the Nexus 7 and selling my GTab 10.1. I rather have an android tablet that is more open and more quick to get upgrades. I have an ipad 3rd gen, so I don't need another large screen tablet.
My old nook color was my intro to tablets but the screen was just too small. Immediately after getting the 10.1 I was never you g back to anything smaller.

Same here. My nook color has been collecting dust for the past year. Works fine as an e-reader but feels cramped for web browsing.
Media playback on a 7-inch tablet would be fine for me though but here again with the lack of microSD and HDMI support the Nexus 7 falls short of what's needed. Sacrifices have to be made for the price point . . obviously the Nexus 7 is meant to compete with the nook tablet and kindle fire. It does well there with the quad core processor and higher resolution screen. Too bad . . I'd pay a bit more to get a microSD card slot in that thing (or be willing to pay $250 for the 8gb model w/ uSD).

It's got the home button from the phone though. That was one of the things that people hated about the Note 2 compared to the Note 1: having to push a mechanical button instead of a capacitive home button meant having to change to a finger push instead of a stylus poke.
The design, at least to me, is kind of stupid. Android on a tablet doesn't do well in portrait and widgets end up squished to fit. Using the Note 8 in landscape is going to be challenging because of the button placement and types of buttons Samsung decided to use. And having what appears to be a single front-facing speaker is a step back from the Note 10.1. It's just my opinion but having less than a 10" tablet kind of defeats the purpose especially with S Note and multiview. I'm sure it'll sell well though.
I just hope we get some of the new features like Awesome Note (Samsung has a one year Android exclusive) and the addition of TV Discovery to Peal to pull in Netflix and Hulu content.
I waited for Note 8.0 thinking it would be just like Note 10.1 but smaller. But it is more like a bigger version of Note 2 but with poorer camera. Meh.
Samsung - this is an enlarged phone, not a proper tablet.
I don't have a Note 10.1, since I really don't want to drop 400-500 on a tablet anytime soon as I did with the Thinkpad Tablet, and that was a huge mistake. As far as I've seen, this tablet is a lot better, but I think the price point of this 8.0 tablet might be appealing. We'll see, I guess.
Anyone think a second version of the 10.1 tablet is due as well, in the near future at least?
im still thinking if this will be a good backup phone from the Note 10.1 or i might settle for the Nexus 4. but ever since the rumors about the Note 8 came out, i am so into it.

Well the Note 8.0 solves THE big knock on the Note 10.1 - lousy PPI. Because of the smaller form factor the PPI goes up by almost 50 points. That's enough to make a real difference. Also thumb typing in portrait will be much more comfortable. It will also have a large enough screen to handwrite in portrait (unlike the Note 2).
One side benefit of this is that the Note 10.1 will get cheaper. BestBuy has it for $449 today. First time I've seen it on sale there.
Last point. Note 10.1 will now get better software.
I expect the Note 8.0 to be wildly popular and honestly the tablet the Note 10.1 was meant to be.

Today, Engadget is reporting on 3 new 7-inchers being shown at MWC--1 by HP that will be priced at $169 USD (not breathtaking specs on it) and 2 by Lenovo. It will be interesting to see if a 3G international version of the note 8 with dialing capabilities will be announced at the official unveiling at MWC. As many have noted, the speaker placement looks similar to the note 2, leading to speculation that some models might have phone capabilities.
I don't see a point why a Note 10.1 user should consider buying this tablet. Of course, dpi is lousy and i won't deny it, it just sucks. But that's one point - the Note 10.1 is a full-fledged android tablet. Landscape oriented, great software, enough power to maintain the upcoming years and some great features like stereo frontfacing speakers.
The Note 8.0 is a LOT more specified and in my opinion it wants to appeal a bit more professional users than most who bought the Note 10.1. I bought it for studying, it'll do a great job then. But i also wanted a multimedia tablet i can use at home, i think the Note 8.0 will have difficulties in that. It's too much different from standard android tablets.
I hoped for the Note 10.1 to get cheaper before i bought it (i waited for almost 2 months) but finally couldn't resist it anymore. I wouldn't buy the Note 8.0 anyway.

The Wi-Fi version won't and the U.S. and Canada won't be offered a 3G version. And probably in the countries that offer both more than half sold will be Wi-Fi only because people don’t want to have to buy 3G data. The N8000's a phone too but still survives without looking like a giant Note II including hard and soft buttons that are difficult to use in landscape and a single speaker. Do you honestly see anyone with a Note 8 holding it to their ear for phone calls?

It's just the classic comparison of a 7/8" tablet vs. a 10" tablet. It's no different than comparing the N7 and N10; they are meant for two different market segments. The Note 8's going after the iPad Mini, not the Note 10.1. I agree about the better PPI between the Note 8 and 10 but because of the extra screen real estate you'd typically hold the Note 10 further away minimizing the impact. 10" high-end Android tablets have never sold particularly well because their price points are too close to the iPad and with that the masses tend to go for the original. If I was shopping for a tablet today I'd still buy the Note 10.1 in spite of its PPI because of its features. I like that it's designed to be used in landscape and the extra display space makes productivity stuff tons easier than working with a 7/8" tablet. But, to your point, based on size, price, and volume in the 7/8" space the Note 8 will easily outsell the Note 10.1. And I don't think Samsung cares one way or the other. The only thing I'll give my Note 10.1 up for is a Note the same size or larger with a FHD display. Purely my personal opinion of course.
Its pretty much the same tablet. Ill wait another year or atleast until tech advances enough to justify dropping another 500+ for a tablet. And when that happens, it will probably be a nexus :laugh:

higher dpi sounds great, just remember it means more work for the battery and cpu, I believe the wacom digitizer and resolution need to match also. personally I cannot sacrifice screen real estate, annotating blue prints requires a large screen for me. would love something in the 11.6 range. but I do believe they have different audiences, (I never believe in a one size fits all approach) probably get the little lady one, call it the " lady note"
I only want one cuz it's sexy. That and I'm a sucker for ads lol.
Realistically this could never replace my Note 10.1.
I won't make this too in depth, but I'd actually like to address some of the development doubts I've seen for the 8.0 and share my fair opinion of the device so far. First off I'd like to compare it from my own personal experience to other tablets I've owned and used a fair bit.
First off I'd like to compare it to a Nexus 10. I spent roughly a week playing with a Nexus 10 and settled on returning it. This is going to sound a little strange being that I'm comparing such a close price point but the Nexus 10 to me was not worth the premium. Not only that but honestly with a 10" tablet I feel I may as well be using my 13" Lenovo Ideapad Yoga- BUT that is a personal preference and by no means a fair reference point. What did I experience with the Nexus 10? I did like the build quality, however the user experience was strangely underwhelming even after installing some custom ROMs. I'm quite aware this paragraph isn't too relevant, however I've found the Note 8.0 a fair bit easier to use in every day situations than any 10" tablet I've owned.
Comparing it to a Nexus 7 is another matter. I do own a Nexus 7, I've actually given it to my significant other's 12 year old girl to learn and play with. Originally though I do love the device far more so than it's 10" counterpart. The only problem is well, it's just slightly too small for some uses. The form factor I found to be slightly frustrating. Whenever I used it I felt I may as well just settle and use my Galaxy Note II. That said however the feel of it and the quality for the price point was obviously fantastic. It just seems that there is a sweet spot in my opinion on tablet size and I think that lies somewhere around 8 inches. It gives you plenty of room for web browsing, it's actually a decent amount more function to type on than even a Nexus 7 given the extra screen real estate, and it still works beautifully as an ebook reader/news source.
The biggest advantages really I've found is that the Note 8.0 while not having an entirely great screen resolution seems to have a better picture quality than a LOT of tablets I've played with. There is something slightly more sharp about the screen than even my experience with the Nexus 10, but let me make this clear. I'm not saying the screen is technically superior.
The other large advantage I've really noticed is how snappy even with the vanilla samsung ROM the note 8.0 is. Side by side it's by far the snappiest, quickest responding tablet in it's class for general use, save for mayhap using the home button. Yes, I don't necessarily like the hardware keys but they don't cripple the device in my own opinion. To be honest since I use a Note II for my phone it's helped the transition familiarity wise and I do think this was intentional more so than just developer laziness.
I would like to make a note I do own a 10.1 note also and I still do prefer my 8.0 at this point to it's use. Yes, I do wish Samsung would up build quality as of casing for these devices, but they are by far hindered by this. To be totally honest the plastic casing on my Note II and 10.1 has held up tremendously well to some nasty drops and spills, far better in fact than anything I've had with a more premium styled enclosure. That being said I do dislike the plastic creekyness which is very much noticeable with my 10.1.
The Note 8.0 strikes me as this, a great medium. It's not quite a full blown 10" media tablet and at the same time it's not quite so cramped as those 7" tablets available. As of the S-Pen functionality I honestly just think it's a plus. Even without it I would prefer these devices to most of the other comparable android devices in the US market at the moment.
When it comes to ROM development I would just say be patient. It's a new device with a definite premium price. It might take awhile but the forum on XDA just now really appeared within the last 24 hours and it might just take some time to get things going. That being said I would imagine the similarities to the Note II may speed up development once we have a recovery and such.
As a footnote, I've ordered this keyboard case which is due to arrive Tuesday and I will try give it a proper in depth review ASAP.

I can agree with your post. I have a Note 8 and 10.1, Note 2, Nexus 7, amd GS3. The Note 8 is good in every way size, function, battery, software, and decent screen. The only issue is the captive buttons. They interfer with the usability at times, so if im watching hulu and holding the device one might hit the back arrow and stop the movie. How annoying. Other than that its my go to device

Well said! I've owned the GS3 and own the Note 2, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Evo 4g LTE, and Nexus 4 and believe me the Note 8.0 is one of the top devices out there. Even though Im not a big fan of the plastic build quality I will say that it does hold up and it feels at least like expensive plastic lol. This device is quality and though Im not purchasing the GS4 simply because I want a change from Samsung the biggest reason is waiting for the Note 3. Development will pick up its only been available for a little while peeps. If your on the fence and want a Apple like quality tablet with Android the Note series of tablets are definitely what you are looking for. Also the amount of software additions in this tablet is rediculous.

Sorry OP if untrue; i know that i might be completely wrong ("in dubio pro rero" etc.) but still my gut feelings tell me otherwise.
i sincereley hope the Note 8 will be a great device and have owned more or less every single one of the latest samsung smartphone / tablet gadgets, but being sensitized / aware of the latest news regarding samsungs marketing tatics to pay people to write positive comments in forums like this i am extremely pissed of by this pracise. apart of being unethical (in whatever holistic sense i am not able to properly articulate in english) this is simply not necessary, because most of the samsung devices i own / have owned are great, but the smell of being produced by such a kind of manufacturer spoils the joy. stop this an let (your very good, indeed) products speak for themselves.

I agree on the screen size thing.
The nexus 7 with a 16:9 screen at 7 inches sort of feels like a super large smartphone with insignificant space to pinch and zoom while on landscape.
My current 7.9 inch with a 4:3 screen ratio feels just right with significant space to pinch and zoom on landscape while making web pages somewhat more spacious for a desktop like experience.
Only draw back in the black bars but once again I am still using a old school 4:3 monitor at home

I just came from reading the articels on arstechnica and our local newspaper on the mentioned (presumed) practice of samsung in korea and england before coming here in order to research about my new / future "baby" (Note 8). The first post I've read was yours, and I was like "oh my god, I can't believe it, it's indeed happening!" so I couldn't resist... (<--- I know, this doesn't make my rude behaviour better, just maybe a bit more understandable.)
LOL, do you think they pay that much? then I might also consider to enhance my meager daytime income (scientist now becoming a teacher) ...

Thanks for your review and thoughts on this. I am going to check it out in person this weekend and give it a go, I had the GN 10.1 for a few days but felt it just wan't a good fit for the resolution of a large device. Still I prefer Android over anything else and looking at ditching my current tab and finally be rid of the last Apple product in my house

This is the only thing bugging me about it so far. Wonderful In the hand and love the SNote (Note 2 is my phone) but if you're used to high resolution screens the fuzziness is apparent when reading text. Not sure I can take it yet. I just picked up a Nexus 10 and am only going to keep one. The resolution is jarring between them. Going to wait it out a bit more and see. I need to be able to read books on my tablet.

I have to agree about 8" being the sweet spot. I have had 7" & 10" tabs (and while 7" is more pocketable I like the 8" better) I have been a Note user since the GN I & II, we have some Note 10.1's at work and I really don't care for them. (the s-pen is nice to have for precise input) i was literally using a G Tab 2 7.0 and the GN 8.0 side by side for a day and decided on the Note 8.0 for my daily driver. Allot of i-devices at work but not my preference.

I got the 3G version, but I use this with tethered wifi with my Note II for internet. The wifi version isn't available in my region.
This is the most decent thread I've read about comparing the Note 8 with other tablets. This is my frst ever tablet, and I find it a relief to do stuff with a bigger screen when I need it like spreadsheets. I used to take attendance with my Note II. Sketching is quite easier too. I found the Note 10.1 too heavy as a portable Cintique stand-in. The Note 8 is lighter and easier to handle.
I can't see any point in getting anything without a Wacom sytlus after getting the first Galaxy Note more than a year and a half ago. I do detailed digital art as a hobby, and I'm weilding the Autodesk Sketchbook and Photoshop Touch to do photo-realistic art. The S Pen is such a useful addition!
I have my Note II as my main, but for times I need a bigger screen, the Note 8 is what I take out. I just wished with had a changeable battery. 8 hours of actual screen on time isn't enough for me. I do hate plugging in to an outlet or portable power to maintain a charge, unlike what I'm doing with my Note II with 12 hours of heavy usage at about 6 to 7 hours of screen time. I usually change battery late afternoon. I can't do that with the Note 8 - I'm guessing that the Samsung team did this for our dependency for the smartphones.
Bottom line for the Note 8 for me is it's what I do need. I don't complain of its plastic exterior. I appreciate it's more powerful than the other tablets for my digital art hobby with the Wacom digitizer onboard. The screen is crisp enough and I don't see the point of having this in full HD (more power consumption) and the 720p resolution it has is sufficient. Do you honestly see the pixels? I just wished it was a Super AMOLED and it could have given the Note 8 better power efficiency. Currently, the screen consumes 80% of the battery life.

I have had very good luck thus far using the Note 8 the entire day. I also use it in conjunction with the Note II and at this point, I feel I have the Nirvana of tech combos. Pretty happy all around here. I dont tether mine to my phone though, as I have a little prepaid hotspot to use out and about. For extended periods where I know I'll be away, like my backpacking trips on weekends, I bring a 10000mah portable battery and keep it in my pack/bag. I have only had to use it once, and that was to charge the Note 2
Yes, there are bigger, yes there are "better" specced devices, but honestly the SPen and a device I can literally use as a notepad replacement has changed my life as a network admin. I can't fathom going back to paper and pen.

We need to start a letter-writing campaign to Samsung to get them to (a) change their firmware to allow apks to be stored and run from the external SD card, and OTA it to us as soon as possible, and (b) make 32GB the absolute minimum for internal storage on any future devices. Having to use workarounds is ridiculous.

I'm with you on B. A is harder insofar as I understand it the changes were in AOSP so it's really Google and not Samsung to blame for not being able to transfer apps to sd. It's getting silly now paticularly with the s4 which has about 7.8gb of usable storage. 9gb is closer to 8gb than 16 gb so it's kind of deceptive to call it 16gb. Many consumers who don't do enough research before buying will be quite disappointed.
Flash memory is actually pretty cheap now and Samsung manufacture it. It's time to stop being so tight Samsung.

Disclaimer: I think this device deserves a thread on its own as it is an actual announced device, not speculated features/successor.
It has everything you guys wanted: s pen support with higher resolution display, bigger screen, and all that with Windows 8 simultaneously. This is truly a dream come true for me as a student. Previously after my labtop broke down I was left with my note 10.1 and I was looking for a replacement which can double up for a pc and note 10.1 so I only need one device. However there wasn't such a device available at that time and the closest was a Samsung ativ pro, and I didn't get it as it didn't have a reasonable price tag considering its single purpose, S pen functionality was not sufficiently integrated with Windows os and the screen was too small for practical use as a Windows pc. The battery life was also said to be 5hrs tops and not enough to last a day's use.
So this device is really a best of both worlds, has every feature to replace 2 devices. What surprised me was the proposed battery life of 9hrs, almost on par with note 10.1, which is amazing given its dual boot capability and intense display power requirements. I'm also glad that the size was bigger at 13.3 inches which is much more fit for use as a proper laptop as compared to a pathetic 10.1 inch laptop (more like netbook? ) as in the ativ pc pro. This will allow tech savvy students to take notes using lecture notes, and switch to windows mode for working on office documents etc. Possibilities are infinite. Moreover it's from a company we're familiar with, not some fancy dual boot convertible device from those usual companies like lenovo or asus.
However, I don't think I will get it soon, as the price will probably be much higher than having 2 separate devices and I just got my replacement laptop Another downside might be its weight, which is more than double of that of our favorite device, but still a reasonable compromise given its upgraded utility.
So what do you think of this magnificent device? Will it replace your Samsung note 10.1?

If I were in the market for a new laptop, I'd most likely seriously consider this. It does what a laptop does, and gives me access to Android apps, too. And it's more portable than a laptop, and lighter. I could see this being my home computer and portable tablet, all in one.
But if I were in the market for a true easy-to-cart-around tablet, this would probably be too much. As it is, I have nearly stopped using my Windows laptop and do nearly everything on my Note 10.1. The only time I fire up the PC is when I need to do more involved graphics in Photoshop or Illustrator.
But this is still pretty cool.
And I agree, it DEFINITELY needs a front-facing camera. Why the need to get a separate webcam, at this point?

Agree with the lack of front camera.
However, for the note 10.1 the battery lasts around 10hrs of continuous usage, hence I said the proposed 9hrs of battery life would be almost comparable to that.

and also, if I didn't just build a desktop with black Friday sales last year, I would certainly get this. But for a likely $1300+ dollars, it really isn't necessary for me. I will use my dual 25" monitor setup at home for anything super productive. I really wish they had announced a new 10.1 Note. That is what I need for notes at school. Plus I can do light word processing when I'm out and about and do final editing or a bulk of the work at home.
I think there will be a good amount of people in a similar situation. Like said above, it would be great if you use a laptop as your main PC and are in the market.

Good find. I had already seen that video and completely missed that when everyone was commenting on no front camera. Depending on pricing, I really think this will be my next big purchase.
Anyone know where the speakers are located? I really LOVE that the Note's speakers are on the front, but I'm not seeing them on this, either in the photos or the video.
The size and weight really make this a potentially great ultrabook replacement but its arguably a little too heavy as a tablet. I find even holding my Note 10.1 like a clipboard gets tiring after a while and this thing is considerably heavier.
Nevertheless, I do find it a pretty compelling product and I think it could be a good fit for a lot of users, particularly if you need a full powered but portable computer.
Has Microsoft/Adobe fixed the incompatibility between pen and Photoshop yet?
Also, for me the ultimate Note 10.1 replacement would include better active digitizer with tilt detection and proper calibration/recalibration driver support. I find the inaccuracy of the pen, particularly around the edges, and the shifting of the drawing point as the pen changes tilt to make using the pen on my Note 10.1 a frustrating experience. I'm holding out for a better solution.
I think what may really replace Note 10.1 for some is the ATIV 3 ... it has all the Note's features except replacing android for windows + Complete office ... i think many people would prefer this for work
I don't see much appeal in the ativ tab 3 since there's already a ativ tab now, just a slimmer version.

but the ativ tab is not full windows 8 its RT while the ATIV tab 3 has full windows 8 with office + an Spen ... it's a complete Note 10.1 with windows :good: (although i dont think of replacing this for that ... i like my note and it's just enough for my work :good

The Ativ 500T is full windows 8 with an SPen. It seems almost identical to the Ativ Tab 3 but a slightly larger screen and optional keyboard dock. Same processor, same or similar screen resolution ect

With the new lower power demands and lower heat output of haswell processors id guesstimate android taking a major hit by windows in 1.5 years or so. Just to much raw processing power with nearly the same power profiles of android. Full desktop power on a battery life of 7 to 8 hours video loop. Android has done a wonderful job but unless they can engineer processing and gpu power similar to haswell in the coming year id say microsoft will bring the pain to apple and android both. Which they very well may do as they have done a wonderful job so far. Snapdragon 800 ect looking at 2.3 ghz. So it may make for some interesting competition. Apple on the other hand has made no true forward leaps. I see them losing share drastically in the coming years if they dont make some pretty big attitude changes soon.

I somewhat agree, but I think a lot will come down to pricing. We'll have to wait and see how much a basic haswell tablet is going to be.

I doubt it, imo most people just want to browse, email, do some basic picture editing, watch videos etc, and tablets can do all that right now which is why desktop and laptop sales are taking such a hit.
Would more powerful arm processors be appreciated, yes. Are people going to switch en masse to Intel Win8 machines, hell no, most of them simply neither want nor need full blown Ms Office or Photoshop.
I have and use my Note 8 for work when I don't want to carry my Win 8 tablet, but this news of the Tegra Note for ~$200 is intriguing - especially with the performance the Tegra 4 will bring at that price. And stylus support? Wow! I'll have to wait and see what reviews will look like.

Honestly I prefer the side-by-side multiwindow that a rooted Touchwiz gives you, though, as that's pretty useful to me when I do use it for work (paired w/ the 2GB of RAM on the Note 8, to the 1GB on this device gives it some edge in the multitasking front as well).
Who knows, though? Due to Nvidia releasing this as a reference model, maybe some manufacturer will license it and sell w/ 2GB and someone figures out how to add the multi-window to it.
On a performance comparison, the Tegra 4 DESTROYS all the other android tablets in this price range, though. Also the footprint is smaller so it would actually fit better in some of my jacket pockets where the Note 8 wouldn't. Also - front mounted speakers!

I don't think it is competition for the note 8, I know it is. My wife wanted a note taking tablet and I got the tegra instead of the note 8, which I use. Good pen input is the only reason to get a note 8, imo. If the tegra has decent pen input it will certainly give the note 8 a run for it's money.

By passive stylus do you mean capacitive? I know the Note series and Windows Surface use similar technology found in Wacom tablets, utilizing a digitizer. There doesn't seem to be much competition on the Android side for the Note tablets.

The only reason I bought the Note 8 was for the stylus and thr ability to project it to a big screen(MHL).
I didn't need the quad core processor and 2 gb ram. The work is not that demanding. The microHDMI on the tegra is much better than the MHL.
The Tegra Note seems like an ideal tablet, even 1 GB ram is ok, but I am concerned that the 7.0 inch size could feel a bit cramped.
I expect the Xolo Tegra note to launch in India for about 15K

The 30% difference in viewing area really matters. Steve Jobs had it right when he said a 7 inch screen compromised a tablet's functionality.

The OP implied that the new Tegra tablet is competition for the Note. That's not the case based on the different styli alone. Anyone who want to write or create with a stylus needs a Wacom one. The iPad can utilize a stylus as well, but it's not the same.
But have you guys seen the last video from Nvidia? Shows a lag free writting and painting with Tegra Note and his stylus, with Galaxy Note we have a lot of lantency. I make beautiful landscapes with my galaxy note, in the start is very good, but it increase the lag as i paint the landscape.
The Note 8.0 is far superior despite anything Anandtech claims. I have no lag with my stylus, and neither have other online reviews.
Plus every 7 inch tablet is crap compared to an 8 inch.

After watching the Nvidia made video demo of it on youtube, the guy tries to act like the tablet apps are Nvidia apps, but they are not. He even demos that "Write" app, which to me looks like his stylus lags when he writes. There is no way its better than the pen on the Samsung Note tablets.
There is also no way a nub tip like that will feel like a pen when writing. But this is just my opinion.

the lag may be due to settings. you can set the pen/stylus lag, (lag is a lot less than compared to Samsung). not sure about note taking, but the TegraN7 is decent in this area. the drawing app seems much better.
i do feel that the stylus for general touch screen use on the TegraN7 is much more responsive than any Samsung i've tried.
Does anyone here have hands on experience with both devices? If Tegra note can provide decent stylus based writing and drawing support (even with capacitative styluses) it's going to be a big deal for student population looking for note-taking and sketching aid...

I was looking for something else when I stumbled across this thread so I thought I'd weigh in. I've had an Advent Tegra Note for a day or so now.... Firstly, it's very fast. It makes my Note 2 feel a bit anaemic. However, the screen is poor. I don't mind the resolution but the back light is uneven and colours are very bland. Whites look kind of creamy yellow like an AMOLED panel, but it lacks the punchy colours to make up for that so it just looks bland. My partner's Tab 3 8.0 has a far superior screen in comparison, even though the DPI is lower. This is also my first vanilla android device and I have to say I think it sucks. I think I'd rather have Samsung or HTC's bloatware on balance.The stylus is very responsive, more so than on my Note 2, but of course you just don't have the apps and system wide integration on board out of the box to fully take advantage of it.
Did I mention how fast it is? That really does make up for it so far. It's like a battered old car painted in grey primer that has a v12 engine hidden under the hood. And it's cheap!

I would go with galaxy note 8.0 because there are a lot more features it comes with. Also the screen colors do look better and I think it is plenty sharp enough for it size as in resolution so thing will still look good. The tablet is still really fast and should be smooth in hardcore gaming. Also if you really wanted stock android for the launcher (home screen and app drawer) you can just download a custom launcher like apex launcher or nova launcher to customize so it looks just like stock android. which is what I do. And coming from stock android , it gets a little boring after a while so that is why I also use launchers to make different themes.
I've had my Note 8 for awhile now, and like i said in my first post, i think it's great. It is getting to be an older model now and if i was looking to buy one, that factor would lower it on my list considering how fast Samsung abandons its models for upgrades. With ART coming soon to replace Dalvik and the potential performance gains that come with that, i'd want to invest in a device that has a good chance of getting it. One thing i don't trust Samsung for is keeping older devices current with Android versions.

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. This tablet is significantly more expensive thanks to the included active stylus technology. A 16GB version of this tablet will run $359 or so.

Please share your specific observations particularly with how you think the Tegra Note is better than the Note 8 in writing and almost equal in art or drawing as there are some here who automatically thought otherwise without even trying it out. Seems they are quick to condemn it as if they are threatened by this cheaper yet more powerful competition.
The thing I'm curious about is that difference in RAM. i know as I'm painting with the Note8, and there are more and more strokes on the picture as the piece progresses, it does start to lag and slow down. The Tegra Note is faster, yet has half of the RAM, so maybe it's still susceptible to this issue or worse?

Tegra note uses a passive stylus, Note 8 uses an active one. All of the features that make the Note 8 unique are not available to the Tegra note. It is no more competition to the Note than a Corolla is to a porsche, despite both being cars.

Which one is better?
-Featurewise.. As well as in my opinion.. the Galaxy Note is way better compared to the Tegra note
Why?
- 1280*800 HD display (vs 1024*768 non-HD display)
- 1.6Ghz Qaud core processor (vs 1Ghz Dual core processor)
- 2Gb RAM (vs 512MB RAM)
- microSD slot
What the tablet can do?
Well it can do most basic purpose you require a bulky laptop for. I.e Internet browsing, facebook, twitter, watching movies, youtube, playing games, blogs, reading books, taking notes, chat, voice call, video call etc.

I think the specs you cite are not for the $200 evga tegra note 7, which has
-microsd
-1 gig ram
- micro sd
- 1200 x 800 ips
-1.8 ghz tegra4 quad
there aren't custom roms yet, but it's rootable and the bootloader can be unlocked. it shares a lot with the nvidia shield, enough that root tools and other work is greatly aided.
I'm using an hp slate 8 just now - same soc, 8 inch, 1600 x 1200 display, no stylus included.
I had it rooted a few hours out of the box and and bootloader unlocked within a day.
It is a benchmark beast, 16k quadrant, 3500 or so on geekbench 2
I'm very curious to get my hands on the nvidia stylus and apps. The aspect ratio is great for me. it is heavy - about a pound - and has a battery about 25% larger than than the note. Time will tell how much that really means.
No ir blaster and no smart wake and a very hard to find/press power button are annoying. I wish it had cap buttons on the bezel, plenty of room for them.
Color accuracy is better on the Samsung - I've been struck by that in comparison to every other tab, using photos I took myself.
Speakers are better on the note - louder and/or better ported.
The hdmi out is going to be very helpful on the hp.
