[Q] Can the static from the car charger damage your phone ? - Hardware Hacking General

This is in the electricity field ..... I wonder if the car charger can damage your phone when the phone is getting "static" ( not sure if it is called "static" ) because of no good "ground loop isolation". The static can be heard if you connect the phone to an AUX port in the car while the phone is also plugged in the car charger.

Charge-Error while charging in my ar

Hello Friends,
i made myself a Carholder with Charger and Audio-Connection for my Wizard100. I took a Lm7805 to create +5V out from 12V of the Car Battery. I also took a normal Mini USB Plug, and connected the two wires who leads the Voltage to the unit with my 5V Regulator. When i turn on ignition in my car i could measure the 5Volts at the Cradle and when i plug in my Device the Charging LED goes Red and the Symbol in my Today Screen shows the charging. But when i pull out my Device after a while the batterypower goes down very fast and rapid. Why? Is there any conection that has to be done? How many pins are used to charge the Wizard by USB?
Charging current...
How much current is your rig capable of, the stock charger puts out 1 Amp. I know that the wizard is rather finicky 'bout its charging method. Hope this leads you in the right direction...as for pins, i would think that if it says its charging, then your pin outs are ok. It would most likely be about the amperage
The L7805 Regultaor IC fits up to 1.5A .Thats enough i suggest. Now i´ve ordered a real car charger and put the electronic in my carholder. What about grounding? Is ist allowed to put the Audio Ground together with the charging ground or must I divide both grounds?
Thanks so far for your replys...

Charging - Desk v Car - Confusing

Hey Guys,
I have a query regarding charging my Hermes / 8525.
If I plug the phone into a wall unit, the orange charge light immediately comes on.
If I use the phone, or receive a call the phone continues to charge.
Once the phone has been used the phone/screen stays on.
When I plug the phone into my car adapter, the phone doesn't begin to charge until the phone goes into sleep mode. But then when I go to use the phone it stops charging. So if the battery is on it's last minutes, plugging the phone into my car adapter does NOT let me continue to use the phone. I have tried 3 different car chargers.
This week I bought an XTLINK Bluetooth Cell to Landline Converter. This is a great little box, and I love that once I walk into my house my cell phone rings through my phone system. Call Clarity is great.
But with the Bluetooth link active constantly the battery drains like crazy.
So I purchased a desktop charger unit. It arrived today. You can use it to charge the phone or with USB to synch the phone. So I plugged in the wall adapter to the cradle, and the phone only charges when not in use.
But when I hook up the cradle via mini-usb to my laptop the phone goes into constant charge mode - but it's doesn't stay on after being in use.
Can someone explain to me why the phone has these different charging modes ? Is there something I can do to change a setting to make the charging more consistent ?
Thank you,
Dave
??
no one else knows about this ?
I have the same problem with USB charging in the car when I was running vp3G's Rom. Now I switch to Crc's Rom and the problem is gone.
But my phone would stop charging if I use my GPS software thru bluetooth and bluetooth headset. In that case I just reset my phone and it would charge normal again.
I have seen this too. I don't know the exact details, but the phone checks the charging current when it is on, to see if it's within a certain value. If it's not, it stops the charging circuit to protect the battery. That's why it works when it is asleep. You'll need to buy a car charger specifically designed for the Hermes.
Yep, there is a long thread on car charging on the forum. Like the other uses says, either buy a HTC official charger or have a look at the other thread about soldering pins 4 & 5 together on the USB connector.
I have a generic car charger from a local electronics store that does not have a problem charging whilst talking over a bluetooth hands free and navigating using a
bluetooth gps receiver, however, I am using one of CRC's roms so that might be why.
The only thing I have found is that if I leave the charger plugged into the hermes when I start the car the hermes stops charging and will not charge again until I reboot it... disconnecting the plug before cranking the engine and then whacking it in straight after works around the problem though.
There is probably so much of a voltage drop when cranking the engine that the little DC-DC convertor can not keep the charge current up.

Car charger does not work

Q: Suddenly my car charger (cigarette lighter plugged) is not working anymore. After 5 mins. my device stops charging..... is there anybody having the same problem and knows how to solve it?
If it's after a period of time maybe a battery contact issue?

If you've already read the sticky posts relating to car chargers and your (mystery brand) charger isn't one of those, then maybe your phones battery terminals and connectors need careful cleaning with a cotton bud moistened with contact cleaner or IPA. I had a problem with my mains charger ceasing to charge my TyTN II after a minute or two a long time ago and after cleaning as described, the problem went away. Be sure not to spray the contact cleaner or IPA onto the phone or battery, only the cotton bud/Q-tip and then gently rub that on the spring contacts and battery terminals. How does charging via mains adapter or PC USB port go?

It still could be a battery contact issue as voltages may differ slightly when using the car charger compared to the other forms of charging. As an example if the Kaiser is set to stop charging when the supply voltage drops below a certain value and the car chargers voltage is lower to start with (and fluctuates with normal driving/electrical usage) then that may explain things. It's well worth doing this cleaning every so often anyway as a matter of course so give it a try and see what happens.
Additionally, could heat be a factor eg if it's sitting on a hot dash or near heater vents (the device is designed to not recharge above certain temperatures)?

Thanks for the advice, i will give it a try
if you have any adapters that allow for another usb input, nice a headphone adapter, or the HTC Multifunction Audio Cable YC A300, a ycable or anything with a USB in, try that first.
if that doesn't work, take the unit into your retailer and they will give you a new (or refurbed) unit, as your USB port may have a pin or two out of whack.
This may be weird, but my tilt used to charge just fine from most USB chargers(car, AC, usb cords). One fine day it quit charging off most chargers except the official AC charger from AT&T. I tried to fiddle with the USB pins inside as one looked like it might be a bit bent/damaged. No luck.
However, yesterday I noticed that My Settings->System->Power->Advanced settings page had following option checked:
'When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC'.
Once I unchecked it, it started charging of PC USB cables (obviously), but strangely enough also charging from my car charger(s). Hope this works out for you or someone else...

It is probably because your normal USB pin 4 and 5 in the cable of your other chargers are not shorted to signal that there is no data connection. So your phone thinks it is connected to a PC (or a device which might send it data), hence not charging the battery according to that setting
I have a similar infuriating problem, i have had a MDA VArio III for over a year now, had an issue with my last one and had a replacement issued in October. Now i have used the Brodit active holder (ciggy lighter version) since day one over a year ago and wit the new MDA as well. now all of a sudden phone will not charge in the holder, borrowed a friends active cradle still no charge, used a no brand usb ciggy ligther charger and charges fine!!!!
When phoe n is placed in the holder orange charging light comes on but phone does not charge and the light goes out 5 mins later!!!
any ideas anyone???
thanks
Matt

Problem solved - Pin 5 on my phone was ever so slightly out of alignment, bent back into place and all is now well! strange it only affected the brodit holders, nothing else!
Car charger failure explained
I also experienced this same problem and actually broke my phones mini usb plug in frustration at lack of charging. Got it fixed again though
The reason for this problem has become apparent since my phone was repaired. In your car, like my car when the heater is switched on it will gradually heat up the cigarette lighter socket. My charger cable like yours has a thermal safety circuit built into it. So when the ciggy socket heats up the heat is transferred to the charger plug and breaks the elec charging circuit. You might see me driving around London with my charger plug hanging out of my window (to cool it down) on a Winter's day!!! Honk if you do.
The solution would be a cheaper charger without the thermal circuit built in. Go into Maplins or PC World and ask them for that..... They dont know what your talking about, because I have already tried.......! Good luck
You just need to make sure to enable your phone to charge when connected to PC.
Start->Setting->System->Power->
UN-CHECK the box that said "When device is turned on, DO NOT CHARGE the battery when connected to PC"

C h a r g i n g !!!!!!

I have several 5V usb chargers and 2 car chargers the today I went for an hour drive with only the phone on and bluetooth after 1 hour the power had gone down 5% !!!! I tried another car charger going home for 1 hour result was the same.
I then plugged the Leo into a 240V to 5V no name usb charger at home for 2 hrs and the power went down 5%.
I then plugged it into the HTC USB charger (from my HD 1) and within a few minuits it was up 2%.
I know this is mad all the chargers are rated at 5V at 1A
I also note it will not charge when plugged into a PC usb.
The sounds crazy
does anyone have any ideas ?
Yes
I have an Idea - there is an option called "do not charge fom USB when phone is on"
(Or something like that) - on my device - the default was "on" -
meaning - it did not charge when it thought there is a data connection going on
Try searching for this option . . .
(If I find it - ill edit this post - and add the path to it)
Edit:
The path to this option is:
Settings -> menu->all settings -> system -> power->battery -> "When phone ..."
was your LED blinking when you plug the cable to your Leo, or it shows an amber light and stays permanently on?
If it's the former, your phone might have a problem with charging. It happens to my first set, and my set couldn't charge at all. The charger and battery were diagnosed to be ok, it was the unit itself that has a problem. Brought it back to the dealer and have it exchanged 1-1.
Light ON
Sorry forgot to mention the light was on continously on yellow. So it appears that it was charging.
The other setting was under settings -> System -> Power -> battery
When the phone is on do not charge the battery when conected to a PC and I do have this unchecked.
I also noticed this, Plugged mine into the car, and lost about 2% battery, was playing a game on the phone at them time... Its seems to take quite a while to charge
Car Charger
Has anyone charged you Leo sucessfully with a car charger if so could you provide me with the type of charger and the specifications.
Thanks
This May not necessarily be a fault with the device; i noticed the same functionality with my TG01; it would not initially charge on other same spec chargers except the one it shipped with.
Its possible that there is some sort of voltage requirement that these MicroUSB chargers require that are not being met by MiniUSB Adapters.
Expansys do a car charger for the device, there Product Code: 188895 not sure if its HTC branded or not.
Make sure your charger has at least 1A output. But, I still have the problem when charging too.
You need to look at how much Amperes your car charger has.
If its 0.7 amps like most cheap ones, no wonder. You need to use a 1 amp car charger minimum, especially if you have GPS and data connection running.
Hint: get a charger intended for use with a standard car GPS unit - they are typically 1.5 amps, and then you need a converter plug from standard to micro-usb.

car charger

Hi,
I use EVO 10 to run Waze navigation in my car and I'm looking for a charger that can cope with that load.
What charger I've got now (ISY QC 3.0) is failing in such case and this phone quite annoyingly places a large overlay dialog box almost covering the entire screen...
Anyone had success choosing a better car charger?
Thanks
Update: Solved, bought a samsung charger.
And the cable itself was also playing a role in charging failure.
