What's the fastest easiest upgrade to the latest stable version? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone! I've been a Defy user for about 2 years, it's got the best reception of any android device in it's price range, and frankly gets better reception than my Samsung Note!
I'm on t-mobile and I don't use data much just wifi.
Anyway, I have stock Moto Defy Mb825 with Android 2.2.1, and the RED lens.
What I am looking for is probably a stock ROM, I want to know how do I get from here to the newest, most stable rom available?
What rom(s) do you recommend?
I want to be up and running fairly easily without too much hacking to get the job done.
BTW, I live on the edge of town, where my Samsung only gets Edge! But my Defy will work on 3g mode and gets 3 solid bars out on the edge of town! So I am running on the 1700 mhz I believe. In the current status, it says I am connected via: UMTS. Whatever ROM I upgrade to needs to allow me to use that exclusively so I can get a good strong signal, not because I use data.

Since you are with defy since 2 years and I guess you are too used to with gingerbread....
And stable on gb is Ms2ginger, cm7, cm7.2
Use those Roms...
If not rooted first get rooted by Farma Root....search that app on xda...
HIT THANKS IF I HELPED YOU

New To MyTouch3G - ROM Recommendations?

Hey guys...
My wife has a MT3G (T-Mobile US), and lately it has been running horrifically slow. I've been thinking about flashing a custom ROM to her handset, but I'm not sure if the benefits will be worth it.
I have an HTC HD2 that I've been flashing for a few months now (SD, NAND, etc), so I'm not new to flashing ROMS. I am, however, new to the MyTouch 3G. I've never really messed around with it. I just started reading some of the tutorials on here today...
Anyway, I'd like to get her phone to perform better.
Can anyone recommend a good ROM to flash for performance?
She doesn't need crazy apps or features. She has typical cell phone usage habits, like calling, texting, pictures, facebook, and a few games. That's about it.
Any help is appreciated!

Well... depending on what kind of MyTouch she has would depend on what would be best for her. Seeing that you are in the United States I will assume that you have either the standard 32B devices or the newer model with the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top (also known and referred to as Fender, 1.2, LE and "the-one-with-the-3.5mm-headphone-jack"). All honesty she might as well stick with stock for stability. Most custom roms are stable so don't get me wrong but some members complain that CM 6.1.0 rom (for example) makes their phone run slow. Others like the stock rom because they swear that it's faster. Being comletely honest here most of the MyTouch roms that you'll find here will be for the 32A type devices (foriegn hardware that would be incompatible with yours). This is because all of the 32B devices (USA devices) are also compatible with the G1/Dream. So instead of managing two different threads for two different devices for the same rom we just direct MyTouch 32B users to the G1/Dream section. I know it's really complicated but in a nutshell... if your MyTouch is ordered from T-Mobile USA then you should look toward the G1/Dream section for your roms because there are more posted there than there are here.
I'd have to say out of the custom ROM's I've tried, I like CyanogenMod 5.0.8 the best. That's the one I've kept on my wife's phone since I rooted it back in June. It's very stable and get's you the nicer feature's of Android 2.1. Honestly though, staying stock is probably the way to go. If you've got the older 32B then she should've already gotten the T-Mobile update to 2.2 and if not, then a call to Customer Service should get it. If you've got the 1.2 (3.5mm jack) they're going to start rolling out the update for it beginning tomorrow and running until the 1st of February. It may just be time to do a factory reset and if that doesn't improve performance, maybe use one of the one-click root methods, flash the custom recovery, then just flash an OC kernel.
Gio's 2.2.1 worked great and looked awesome on mine. Don has it right though, just wait a couple more days and get the stock 2.2.1 for your phone and clean it up and im sure it will play nicer.
Just a friendly word of advice. Just cause you are good at working another android phone doesn't mean another will be easy. I did lots of reading before and after rooting and flashing my phone. I still do.
Hell, now that there is mention of the OTA, now everyone wants to go back stock to get it. Instead of looking, cause its already out there, they keep wanting to know how.

Just a word of advice, if you regularly tether the phone to your computer for internet access and install the tmobile ota update, tethering will be disabled and you will have to pay $15/mo extra to keep tethering. A cs rep told me this a few months ago and that conversation was actually what finally made me root my mt3g, and I'm glad I did. I was using cm6.1 and speed was decent, but the latest nightly build had a huge increase in performance and I haven't had a single issue with stability. The new 32b 2.6.35.10 kernel has also been much faster and I have been getting WAY better reception by updating to the 2.22.28.25 radio. And universal androot method worked for me on the mytouch in the same way as any other device.

Samsung Captivate user trying to help my friend's Nexus S

Hi guys,
So i'm running with the samsung captivate and as we know the development for that phone is completely outstanding and i'd say is probably the best for the Galaxy S lines in terms of quality of roms, and the variety you can choose from.
My buddy got a nexus S and he likes android but he's not happy with his nexus S as it stands now. His problems are mostly around slow browser, he says he has reception issues with vodaphone UK whereas before he had none, and the phone often hangs and can get slow, battery life is bad.
Now i wanted to ask you guys in the development forum if its worth it for me to root/unlock his nexus S (i've read up on unlocking the bootloader etc so I think I can pull it off) and load one of these custom roms. However, I dont think any of these roms are very well developed.
Do most of you experience good performance on the Nexus S with stock google updates? Do you think my friend has a dud phone, or should I go ahead and put Bionix on his phone? I dont want to be his tech support going forward, so I fear the rom is still very beta and I dont want to be stuck always helping him, but if one flash will set him for at least a few months i dont mind helping him.
Any thoughts? thanks.
edit: my face is red.. can a mod move this to general please ?
Um wow, well i got my nexus s couple of weeks ago, and i did run it with the stock for for almost a week, and i cant say the same things as your friend. The phone is really fast, battery is ok ( it dies as all the smartphones within a day if you play a lot with it ) and no hangings what so ever.
Maybe tell him to make a hard reset, or if he installed a lot of things, then try to install less things after the hard reset.
You can make it blazingly fast if you use a custom kernel, i was using modaco r10 as rom and 1.3ghz bionix kernel, and trust me it was fast fast fast. Only minor thing was the restarts here and there.
Other than that the phone is really fast and stable, with no problems whatsoever.
Wrong section, please avoid!

[Q] Giving away my old G1 as a gift. How should I set it up?

I've decided to give my niece my old G1 for her 12th birthday as her first phone. I believe she's technically adept enough to use and take care of it. However, she lives 90 miles away, so I won't be able to service it easily if something goes terribly wrong.
So what would be a good setup of the G1 to prepare it for long term use? What would be a fast stable ROM to install and any applications that would prove useful for this scenerio?
The phone is both rooted and unlocked, though she'll likely be using T-Mobile.
The current ROM is BiffMod V2.1.
Thank you for your support.
I'd put FroyoByLaszlo 5.2 on, it's the fastest and most stable ROM i've ever had, and it's obviously 2.2. I'd definitely do that.
Or downgrading & unrooting it to stock 1.6 sounds good too, since its the most stable & fastest & plus, she's only 12 lol

Froyo for Trout is an amazing ROM if you want none if the DEV features. Since she's 12 i don't think you want her over clocking, or putting the Phone into a Bootloop. Froyo for Trout is fast, simple, and just what a younger kid needs.
If it's not too late, I would recommend SuperAosp.
Until the gingerbread branch is fully baked, I recommend you to flash the froyo roms, saves u d 90 miles of travelling if anything happen, lol
Get the newer spl and radio for extra ram
I recommend froyo for trout for stock, or froyobylaszlo for a light cyanogenmod based rom
One lucky niece!

[Q] Best ROM for performance (tethering)

Hi all-
Long time Android, new GT540 user - I bought one for my vacation since I'm traveling to Europe and my CDMA phone will be rendered useless.
I've rooted the phone but done nothing else as I research which version of recovery and which ROM to go with.
I just need the phone for GMail and tethering, since I'll have my laptop with me and I'll need to access my work VPN.
Any recommendations on the cleanest, most stable ROM that will offer decent performance (battery and speed) for tethering? I saw a few, but not sure whether I should be focusing on Froyo or Gingerbread with this phone.
Thanks!

I recommend Froyo for our device, Gingerbread is stable and quite fast, but Froyo is much better for performance. I recommend pcfighter AOSP ROM. It supports native tethering and is very fast.

Thanks! Just what I was looking for, going to give it a flash and try it out.
tethering is not properly working with android 2.3.3 (GB) I mean with CM
Haven't tried
I haven't tried Froyo yet but I'd prefer MrMur4ik's Cyanogen Mod 7 build
You should also try miroslav_mm's Utopia Froyo project. It's very good.
Are you implying Swiftdroid? @DroidMayu
This question should be guided from a PM system.
Very sorry :/

Slow Data Speeds?

Well, thought I'd see if this was normal still... or what the deal is:
My Atrix has had really slow data speeds since I upgraded to 2.3.4 using the leaked image.
I have confirmed it is overly slow based upon two tests: I am getting consistently 1.8mb/s down and 300-400k up in the same room as iPhone and other ATT users getting 5+ down and 2+ up consistently. AND the 3 surrounding ATT towers directly in surrounding me are upgraded to 14.4 HSPA+ with increase backhaul (confirmed on ATTs site and by local reps).
Any ideas? The phone is not unlocked or anything really done to it other then rooting.
Google search v6 supercharger by zeplinrox
(FROM XDA OFCOURCE
Use this script with script manager in market (free
Insatll it makes phone faster also were you find the download look for 3g Turbo charge use it after the v6 script they work well!
Also should consider unlocking and
Rooting and flashing custom roms
They run better 1 there pachage size is smaller so its less impact on your system
2 custom is cool lol cm7 on an attrix is beast! So is alienv4 with Oct kernal ofcourse. .... try option 1 first
