New G1: My Wife's Phone: ROM Options?

I'm sure you can tell by my post count i'm fairly new to this G1/Android craze.
Actually, I don't even have one, yet. But my wife wants to move from nokia to G1.
I currently have an iPhone, and, after jailbreaking, is an excellent phone.
But it has it's problems. For example, no Linux support (at least not officially, and not good enough).
And why is Linux important? My wife has a Linux laptop (work laptop).
Anyway. I have read and have seen there is a thread telling not to ask for "best ROM", so i read some more, and there are a lot of links, but i can not seem to find one that can help me.
I went to the Androidspin database, and for G1 alone, there are 120 ROMs!!!!!
So, what are the ROMS that more closely fit this "requirements"?:
1) Stability. My wife is not very technical, so i want this to be smooth.
2) Speed. I love visuals, but i rather have a responsive phone.
3) Usability. The most feature rich gadget is useless if i have to take a course in physics to use it.
4) Internet. Browsing, MS Messenger, etc.
5) Applications. Access to the Android market is very much welcome.
6) Google. Synchronization with google apps in general, gmail, docs, etc, is very much welcome.
7) Skype. This would be a very "nice to have".
Lets just finish by saying that my wife would be using it unlocked on Argentina, not T-Mobile, so i think no 3G, but only wi-fi, because of bands compatibility.
So, which 5-10 ROMs should i try?

well if you want stable rom. you gotta go with cyanogen. his latest stable is 4.2.15.1. but you hav to have the phone rooted.

SuperD is the fastest and most responsive, and in my experience, is also more stable than Cyanogen.

If you want a stable 2.1 ROM, cyanogen's 5.0.7-test1 is fast and responsive. I've only used it for a few days, but stability seems good.

I have been rooting and hacking since the phone first came out in Oct 2008. I love everything android, Cyanogen, google, HTC, modding etc etc. I know I am going to take a lot of crap for this from my fellow hackers, flashers, and modders, but your first requirement:

made me think of only one option for you (and her)....stay with stock roms that are officially supported and receive OTA updates.
I know that you would probably be doing all of the modding of her phone since she is not technical but you will not always be with her and altered ROMs can act up despite the best efforts of all the great developers that contribute to Android. Stay with stock and I have a feeling you will thank me later.

It depends on what you are doing. You need a “recovery image” which, as I get it, is just like a back up of your O.S. You have your choice of many here and elsewhere.
I think if you go over to the unlockr.com it’s pretty well spelled out. Figure out where you’re at and where you want to be, and proceed accordingly.
(It’s all here to but a little confusing to me)

In your experience, what are the most common crazy things a ROM does, when not the stock one, besides maybe hunging?

I would go with Cyanogen's last "stable" release. Judging from my fiance's response to my phone, I think she would be happier with it rooted to just have a speed boost available. The stock G1 is incredibly slow compared to a Cyanogen build mainly because it runs below the processor's capability until you root it and change the setting. Also, there is very little onboard memory and Apps2SD is a life saver for the G1. Basically it allows you to save your applications on the SD card but then your phones relies on the speed of the SD card. Even then, the G1 has a lot of hang ups that an impatient person may have issues with.
I think another android phone may be better for you if it is in your price range. The G1 has really turned in to a gadget to tinker with due to its lackluster hardware. I love my G1 because it is the ultimate gadget that I can recreate on a monthly basis but my fiance HATES it for that same reason.
Judging from Cyanogen's latest experimental build I may have to eat my words. It runs incredibly smooth but still has some bugs to work out.

Cyanogen seems to have some of the more stable roms but i'd definitely search the forums a little more

cyanogen use to do a half boot sounds weird but it would go to the animated bootscreen. load. and then go right back into the app i was running . i think it may have something to do with my phone itself

i switch between the two often enough to recommend both

They’re all a little screwy and it varies from phone to phone. I just swapped from super D to Cyanogen 5.07. Neither works my camera (Cyanogen admits to not havening zoom features). (In my case, I probably have a hardware prob.).

I the G1 gets Android 2.1 or 2.2, i would probably leave it like that for my wife.
The problem is that it is at 1.6 only.

cyanogen 5 is running 2.1 although its still in it's experimental stage (give it a week or so).
but seriously just get amon ra's recovery running and teach her to flash roms....... it's quite an addiction (as long as she can follow instructions she will be fine)

According to the ROMs thread, the best one is SuperFast 1.3.3 RHJ.
All is 5 (excellent)

I have tried many different roms but SuperFast 1.3.3 RHJ is my daily use rom. I have not had any issue with it. It looks awesome. Has the new anderwebs launcher. The only issue that you might run into is that it uses ramhack which might slow down gaming.
Definitely recommend it. It gets 3.6 avg in linpack!

I want to try SuperFast 1.3.3 RHJ now, and probably later on, SuperD and Cyanogen.
I have so far downgraded the G1, and was able to activate it without a data plan.
Now, i have not installed anything.
I was going to install the recovery image, and was wondering if i should install the Cyanogen one, or the Death one (or something scary like that).
Also, i don't know if i have to upgrade other parts of the phone first, like the RADIO, etc.

im trying to get my phone jtaged so i can finally have it rooted. are there any suggestions on the best mod to use for the g1? i know we have limited memeory and i beleive we cant even run 2.0 or 2.1 on the phone is that correct?

A whole bunch of us have been working hard to get Android 2.1 (CM 5.0.7) running perfect on the HTC Dream and Magic phones and I think it’s nearly ready to go. This release is almost exactly the same as the Nexus One and Droid versions of CM now, minus a few of the heavier apps.
This was an incredible community effort and I hope everyone likes the result. Breathing new life into old hardware is always awesome.
I expect that a stable release of 5.0.7 should be ready for all devices in the next few days.
And after that.. Google has confirmed that Android 2.2 (FroYo) will be available for ION phones, so it’s guaranteed that CM-6 will continue to support the G1 also when the source code hits AOSP.

Cyanogen 5.0.7test7 runs pretty sweetly on my G1 and its based on 2.1

does it lag at all? are there any limitations that i should know of

I find it ok with comcache enabled, around the same speed (if not a little quicker) then the stable based on 1.6.
It is still a "test / experimental" build though, so proceed at your own risk etc...

Running the Rom on my signature which is CyanogenMod5, latest version themed and tweaked. It is a 2.1 and is running very fast/stable so far. Major downside is the battery life however and is a bit hard to get used to vs. a 1.6 Donut Rom.
In all honesty Id say you try SuperD v1.11 (Best Donut Rom in my opinion) first and then flash the Eclair Roms later on. Sooner or later I am sure a developer will improve the battery degradation problem on the 2.1's.

That statement is absurd. EVERYTHING has limited memory. Unlimited memory is by definition IMPOSSIBLE, even the smallest memory component possible would consume more than the total available space in the universe to produce unlimited/infinite memory. In fact, it would consume the space consumed by INFINITE UNIVERSES. Inconceivably huge, eh?

Just because windoze phones don't get to see the newer versions does NOT mean that WE won't get to see our newer versions.

Gingerbread is so fast compare to Froyo, you would not believe it?
But Gingerbread has no sense (except sense theme from Mccm), has no Internet passthrough and some apps do not work with it. SPBTV 2.0 is an example for me.
This is my point of view.
I will never come back to Froyo.

Why there is NO CLEAN SD/MAGLDR BUILDS of Gingerbread, without sense, CM mod etc...? Each avaliable 2.3 build is customized and very unoriginal Hope the situation will change...

i dunno what you mean....
check out AmeriCanAndroid.
it's a SD build, clean, based on CM7 Gingerbread, 2.3.3 to be specific. And is natively built as a Leo, not another device as is common amongst HD2 builds.

Well in my experience, Gingerbread is extremely fast, true, but Froyo is not bad and very stable. The best i tried for froyo was
[Dec 10][SD] NexusHD2-FRG83D V1.8 (PPP + RMNET) [Kernel: hastarin r8.5.3_oldcam], and i got very used to it, all my apps works well and fast enough. gaming (emulators, ps snes genesis n64...), all programs (social, productivity, work...) basically all the apps. My first real jump to gingerbread after many hesitation due to reading the forums was a month ago i tried with CM7 then another stock like (can't remember which one , sorry!), lots of hiccups and incompatible with many apps I loved and can't live without, don't get me wrong they were good but, from my point of view,coming from all the goodies in froyo did not beat the speed gingerbread offered. So i went back to froyo again using [DL Desire v4.32][Sense Re-Engineering with RAM][Always FASTER], which is blazing fast but lags some times (best quadrant score i've seen in all roms i've tested).
So my 2 cents is that it really depends on the user. I would absolutely go 100% gingerbread with AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB233 CM7|bkup2sdext234 [KERNEL:AmCanAndroid r3.06], because this is the best I have tested very fast stable and all that you can get from gingerbread on your HD2, however not compatible with my favorite apps. So until I can work around those, Froyo is still my best option and there are very decent one out there with good tweaking options (setCPU...). Choices choices Gingerbread vs Froyo means to me Speed vs Compatibility, hopefully we can get best of both world soon.
NB: I am talking about SD only, no MAGDLR or Ram as I have seen no real difference running SD or Ram in terms of speed or battery or at least not very noticeable, So I like to keep my WM around just in case since i tend to go crazy on all the options offered so in case of android crash and urgency i can boot back and respond fast on my weak but trusty WM.

Try [27.FEB][DFT/CWM] NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.3 [Android2.3.2][Kernel: tytung_r6]. Clean, fast ROM without any extras

I bought my hd2 on ebay and had to flash it back to 6.5 because of a password problem. I really like my phone but I did like the android. I have been reading hundreds of pages and there is just too much information to get through.
I would like to put android back on my phone but how do you figure out which version is the best? For me it needs to be simple. I am an old lady. I want to put it on and never have to mess with it again. Will some nice person help this old lady across the street.

well i try some ROM too but i always disappointed with Camera and Camcorder ..
with window Camera and Camcorder is better than. Right ?...
I now like the SD version rather than NAND because it keep me safe..

The only way to truely tell which rom is the best one for you is if you test them out yourself. We can tell you which one works best for us but it won't really do any good.

Hi I'd advise you to have a look at darkstones SD roms particularly the sense-less build (I'll edit post with link and name later, I forget it now).
It's very fast, simple to set up. I have been using it ever since I first tried it, about 6 weeks ago. Rock solid and very clean and lovely to use it's well worth a look.

I need a solid rom for a friends phone

Can anyone recommend a solid rom? I installed a froyo rom about 10 months ago on a friends hero.. he has been getting lots of daily random reboots.. other than those he likes it. I'm looking for a solid rom.. don't care if it's froyo or gb.. just something that works well.. a rom that's been around for a while possibly. I've been installing roms on my Evo 4g and galaxy s 4g.. but don't have experience with hero roms..

probably cyanogenmod. If you want sense UI stock is probably the way to go, because its the most stable. Personally the most stable custom sense rom I've used was fresh hero 2.4. I think it was android 2.1. Now if you dont mind not having sense then I sugest Cyanogenmod it is currently at stable release of 7.0.3 android 2.3 Gingerbread. I have looked around and tried many roms but im slow about how to install things and have issues with most roms, so I always end up back at Cyanogenmod. Hope this helps

the truth is everyone is going to say something different,there are going to be issues on every rom some very minor and some big it all depends my only suggestion is to install a coouple different roms like aoscmod hero deck and cm7 and a stock sprint rom then make back ups of them so he can test them out and easily switch back to the one he likes best.

He's absolutely right about preference and different ppl but,
In the little time I've had with my hero... I've tried all of the roms available, and since OMFG has fixed the wifi problem I'm using their latest ... Smooth fast and no fc for me

@OP.....Quoted above is the best answer to this question. Bierce22 nailed it. A rom/setup that runs perfect for me is in no way relevant to how it's going to work on your friends phone. There are just too many variables between phones and between people's preferences & needs.

I would recommend Cynogenmod 7 stable release.
Everything works, No reboots (In my experience) Super stable
and most important of all very smooth.
Just use Launcher pro (free version from market) or
the original launcher (see below for link) which comes with
GB because ADW is known for giving people force close problems.

thanks for the heads up guys.. I ended up putting the cm7/gb rom on it.. and so far so good. Runs pretty darn good.

Your random daily reboots could be from having your CPU speed set too high. Currently I'm building CM7 from source, but aosp is my other preference for stability, performance, etc. But as others above me said, each to their own. Find one that suits your friend best.

How stable is android on the hd2?

Hello, my wife has a sidekick 4g that she absolutely hates and has gotten an offer to trade for an hd2. My question is, the person says it is running 2.3.5. How stable is android on the hd2? If I tell her to trade and it sucks, I will be in the doghouse! Also, if I can convince her to give windows phone 7 a shot, how does that run? I can do the searching later to find out how to boot between the two, but is it pretty risky/hard? I've rooted and rom'd every android phone I've owned but something about winmo. Makes me nervous. Thanks!

I agree. Just make sure the touch screen works they are infamouse for them breaking. The phone is easy to root and nearly every rom on xda runs perfect on this phone

I've had my HD2 for 2 years now, and I knew nothing about rooting etc. It took me a whole day to learn, but now I can easily switch ROMs within half an hour max.
I've tried multiple Android ROMs (SD and NAND) and a WM7 ROM before the mango update, and everything works incredibly smooth and fully-functional. It's actually even better than the original Windows Mobile OS, so I'd highly recommend giving it a fiddle! Trust me, you can't really go wrong if you follow all the right advice (stickies have all the good stuff!)
Once you get going I think you'll really love the variety of builds and find one that you're comfortable with. Enjoy!

Well it all depends on which rom/settings/tweaks you use but in general Android is more stable and runs better on the HD2 then most native Android devices!

You dont "root" the HD2.

I'm using CM7_Tweaked-2.0.0-LEO and radio 2.15.50.14. I would not describe it as very stable and I cannot get the radio to do 3g or H. Perhaps my expectationa are too high and I'm sure it is more stable on Android than Windows, but I am not happy with it.

I have the same problem. would like to update my Leo by Android but I do not know what is the best ROM to do that in terms of stability, display errors and energy management? I was using 2.3.5 NAND version which had quit a lot of bugs. Now I'm back on WM

Android on the hd2 in my opinion runs better on this device than some devices that are launched with it.
Load up NexusHD 2.3.7 and you or your wife won't look back.

Well you are not going to find out unless you try them. Also "2.3.5. NAND" means absolutely nothing as that isnt rom specific, that is just a version number of Android OS.
In my experience the most stable version without needing tweaks/extra setup etc is the NexusHD2 roms by tytung (Froyo) and (Gingerbread) and they are as close to stock Android as you will get.
I am addicted to trying new roms though and have started to really like the MIUI based roms but am currently testing the new NexusHD2 ICS base.

HD2 forever ...
I have an EU and a from about 2 month a TMOUS:
- EU with MIUI 2.37a stable ... hard daily use, it rocks!!!
- TMOUS to try other roms with sense (big internal space required, i hate app2sd ) and tried 3 different version of ICS for now without any problem!!!
I have thought about changing them for a real android but ... i love modding ... so no chance for other model for now

Since you have tried many different roms, have you found a sense 3.5 that can play 720p video? Mwakious 3.5 does not

HD2 was build for Android, delivering it with WM6.5 was a joke!
