i337m MG1 updated - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Is it me or has the LTE signal improved after the update?? UI and camera is slightly snappier, but could just be me.
By the way, CF Autoroot worked for me to get root access back.

[Q] Easier to root from MI9 or MJ7?

I'm still running MI9 and keep getting hassled to take the OTA update. From what I'm reading, it's easier to root and not lose data from MJ7. But, it'd be nice to get the de-bloated Beans Stock coming from rooted MI9 as well.
I've been out of the game a while and a lot has changed. Not 100% familiar with some of the newer hacking terminology. My main goal here is to run WiFi Tether and have the latest radio and updated software (fewest bugs/hang ups the better).
Which method is less hassle?

CF-Auto root doesnt work after updated to 4.4.2

It used to work flawlessly, but after this update, phone is not rooted after Odin installation.
You can't root 4.4.2 with cf. Read thru this, at least the last few pages

Sent from my Nexus 5
cf root 4.4.2
I just googled how to root the s4 after 4.4.2 and cf root works like a charm... having issues with wifi at the moment on the s4 looking for work arounds right now

[Closed] Should I upgrade to 4.4.2 from 4.3?

I've been on 4.3 for a while now, hesitating to upgrade to KK because I've read some complaints about SD card issue and battery life.
Just want to ask, are they resolved or have workarounds developed already? Or should I still hold off upgrading?
Edit: Found a list of potential issues w upgrading. Can anyone (esp. SG users) confirm?
1. SD card problems
2. Force close for action menu, handwriting and Samsung keyboard
3. Unable to switch GMS/UMTS in the Preferred network mode menu

that problem is sovled. u should try 4.4.2 and feel it. more comfotable than 4.3
Sorry for bad eng
4.4.2 is noticeably snappier overall for me.
For all who have updated to KK, can you confirm the known issues in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658315) I'm planning on following the tutorial in that thread, or does anyone know of a better way?

I'm in Singapore, but my handset is export set (France firmware).
I was on MJ7 for 1 month+ (non-rooted), and just upgraded into KK 4.4.2 DBT NB7 Germany. And I rooted with CF-Autoroot with Philz CWM installed now.
So to be frank the link you have provided earlier, I have no idea, because I have never got a chance to root before upgrading to MJ7 4.3.
by the time I upgrade to MJ7, then I know I can't root without tripping its KNOX warranty bit.
So I have to bear with non-rooted until I set up my mind to upgrade to KK and finally I rooted my device on KK, and of course KNOX is tripped, but I don't care with it, as long as no other effects, other than warranty...
After using KK - DBT NB7 for 3 days, I can tell you, my SD card has no problem (only when I want to download and save to SD card from Dolphin browser, it doesn't recognize my SDcard because it is read as "external SD" instead of "storage\external SD"). Other than this, my SD card is just fine.
For problems no. 2 also never exists.
my network is running very well in 4G, H+, H, G. No problem at all.
But the happiest thing is... battery much much much better.
It is more reasonable to be used on KK, compare on earlier version of android for the battery.
And in sleep mode, for 4 hours, it dropped only 2%, things which I never found on my earlier device running on earlier android.
Cheer!

If I try to update to KK while keeping root and face problems, I can always just flash "normally" through desktop Odin (no more root) and root using CF autoroot, and everything will be fine, just that root is tripped right?

[Q] Someone point me in the right direction please

I'm still on 4.3 MJE build, stock and rooted. OTA didn't work for me (which I'm glad it didn't) so I looked into flashing the leaked rom when my computer crapped out so wanted to wait until I got things fixed until I can start screwing around with the phone again.
Now this I have it working again I came onto here and saw that so much has happened since then, so can someone just point me in the right direction to where I should be at? Which rom (something stock), build, radio, version of safestrap (I'm still on 4.3).
I've never used safestrap, only used clockworkmod so this is different for me but I'm sure I can figure it out, just need to know where to start off.
Thanks!

This thread should get you up to speed on the latest firmware, and you'll be able to flash any kitkit rom built off of NC2 or NC4.
To clear up any confusion, from what I've read and have come to understand is that NC2 is the leaked bootloader & kernel, while NC4 is the official. The NC2 bootloader allows you to flash backwards to MJE while the NC4 does not. The NC2 kernel is also unique with features I could try to explain, but barely understand at the moment. The other thing to know is that the NC2 kernel can be flashed over the NC4 bootloader (which is considered the unified firmware). That is what is needed for most of the kitkat roms.
If you don't care to go back to MJE, the quickest method to get up and running would be to flash the NC4 stock tar from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524572, and follow the instructions in the previous post as rooting with TowelRoot takes literally seconds. The only thing you lose on the NC4 bootloader is the ability to flash backwards to MJE.
Now as for modems there are many threads around that talk about which one is best. Unfortunately this may depend on your device. Many people have reported very poor reception and download speeds on NC2/NC4 and have flashed the MJE modem reporting a fix or moderate fix. Others have reported signals and speeds better on NC4 than previous. Some think it has to do with NC2 bootloader being that it is unofficial, and some think it has to do with the release version of the phone as people with recent phones report great signal and speed. The other possible factor may have to do with Verizon's simultaneous upgrade to XLTE in some areas at the same time as the kitkat release. From my experience being on NC4 with NC2 kernel (by choice), I have no worse speeds and LTE in places I only used to get 3G. However, I have modded settings in Service Mode, so that may have effected things.
If you're considering roms after getting all set up check out these:
Jasmine Rom 1.8 Very clean, optimized stock rom with some S5 features. (2.0 is considered a beta by the Dev. He is wotking on 2.1. It is a full Galaxy S5 Ported rom.)
Eclipse Rom As close to AOSP as we will get without an unlocked bootloader. Excellent battery life.
Objective Rom Barebones, extremely debloated. Light, stable, add only what you use. (If you want any of the Samsung apps this is not for you as TouchWiz has been removed and many S apps require TW or Magazines to function.)

Thanks for the input! This is where I was getting confused, I was coming across so many posts where people were saying NC4 was slow and to stick with NC2, and some people were saying it was great. There was too much going back and forth I didn't know where to begin especially since the last time I was able to get on xda just the leak was available and everyone was happy.
I'll check out the NC2 first then go from there.
Thanks for the help!
My pleasure, glad I could help.

Tethering, debloating and flashing - what to do?

I have a bunch of questions
What has gone before:
Droid X2 (rooted)
Galaxy S3 (Rooted and tethered)
Galaxy S4 (Rooted and tethered with Stang5liter's excellent ROM)
I'm sure you are beginning to see a pattern here..!
The Story So Far:
I just got hold of a Galaxy S7, G930V, (Yes, it's Verizon). Build is VVRUBQC5 (Nougat). Naturally I have rooted it (using the "Eng-Root kernel and ROOT.BAT" method). So far so good. The only thing missing is tethering. I am grandfathered into the old Verizon Unlimited plan, and want to get tethering working (which it currently isn't), From the research that I have done, tethering is difficult under Nougat, but if there is a way to get it working, that would be great. Debloating and enhancing performance would also be great, but stock rooted with tethering is adequate for my needs.
Options:
Stick with Nougat Rooted Stock, sort out tethering and de-bloat/tune as necessary
Downgrade to MarshMallow and install a tried-and-true debloated ROM such as Stang5liter or the S7 flat ROM.
Questions:
What benefits does Nougat give over MM? What do I lose if I downgrade?
I see that G930VVZW4BQC9 is available. If I take the OTA, I will lose root. Is it still rootable using the Eng-Root method, or have Big Red found a way to prevent that? IOW, has anyone succeeded in rooting G930VVZW4BQC9?
Are there any problems or restrictions on downgrading to an earlier version of Android? When I try using ODIN to flash an earlier version (PE1), I get a "Fused 4 > Binary 2" message.
