[REQ] Port or Create multiwindow like Rockchip's multitasking? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

this is Rockchip's multitasking, Is it possible to run on Nexus4?

Wow that is impressive

that's very nice, but it seems like it would be really cramped on anything smaller than a 7" tablet

Yeah Samsung Note 10.1 has the same type of multitasking which works wonderful once you root the device because then you can multitask with any app you have and not Samsung specific ones. Bought a note 10.1 recently because of this feature.

If it was possible.. HOW on earth are you suppose to read everything on our tiny screens.. LOL

+1 works well on the note 10.1, but this looks more fluid. Even with the stylus it's a pain to hit the buttons in the corner, reminds me too much of windows. The gesture support seems much better.

Yes, it's great on a 7" inch tablet but it would be cool to have it on a Nexus 4 !
Anyone has more information about this tablet and this new multitask system ?

Samsung Note 10.1 has the same type of multitasking

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, But Samsung implementation seems to only be custom apps that work in window form, but this seems to be a framework implementation?
Meaning this should work well with all Play Store apps as long as they followed the Android development guidelines and have a tablet UI. (fragments, panels etc)

{IDEA} Port TouchWiz from the Note 10.1 to the N7000

Now before I begin, I know there's already a TouchWiz tablet mode in the development forum based off of the the best qualities of the N7000 and the GTab 7.7 (both of which I own), and I've tried it already; it's very exciting development! However, as much as I like this tweak, and as cool as it is (credit given where it's due), wouldn't it be even better if we could simply port a stock Note 10.1 ROM directly to the N7000? I know that the N7000's hardware isn't anywhere near as impressive as the quad-core 2gb beast that the 10.1 is, but the screen resolution of both is the same, and the N7000 is no slouch in the performance department even 1 year on, so maybe it's worth a try?
As I mentioned, I own both the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the N7000. I love both devices. However, I primarily use the 7.7 as my daily driver, mainly because I prefer the tablet interface of Android vs the phone layout used in the stock Note. Thus, my N7000 has sat on my desk, more often than not, as more of a test bed and frankly as more of a toy to use for playing around with all the ROM's that are out there for it (again, credit where it's due!). I've already played around with all the tablet mode options out there; everything from AOSP/AOKP in tablet mode, to the lovely Paranoid hybrid ROM, and so on. However, even then, not everything is as it should be. The S-Pen functionality is greatly reduced, accessories such as MHL output and USB OTG don't always work, and hardware accelerated video playback is usually spotty. In short, it always seems to come close, but it's never quite a perfect fit; there's always something missing.
By porting the Note 10.1's stock TouchWiz to our Note, perhaps that may bring the best of all worlds: a proper TouchWiz tablet UX, with full S-Pen functionality, and all other stock features working properly as they were designed, not to mention the hovering mini-apps for simple things like accessing the dialer, messaging, S-Planner, etc.
If I could have that kind of experience on my current Note, not only would I be disinclined even to get the Note 2, but I think I might just sell my 7.7 as well!! This, for me, would truly be the best of both worlds, which is exactly what Samsung originally intended for the Note when the débuted it at last year's IFA 2011. Having that now would give the N7000 a whole new lease on life; I'm not about to give up on it yet!
What do you guys think?
I was thinking the same
ME TOO )))
Hmm, good to know I wasn't alone! Now, if only we could get the attention of some interested developers! I'd do it myself if I had the know-how (and the free time!)

What an awesome idea. I'd love to have something like LiquidBlack ROM but able to run S Planner which I love. And if the perfection of NoteCore kernel were included then it would make my Note into the phone it should have been back in November 2011 when I bought it!

You guys really?
It'll be completely irrelevant to port Note 10.1 ROM to OG Note.
Too small a text to work on, and simply stupid.
Please have a brain before requesting our developers such a dumb request.
id like it too A fully functioning stable TW tablet ROM.
Sounds cool !

Yeah, but the Note 2 and the S3 UI's are still all just PHONE features. The Note and the Note 2 are still just big phones with pens from a UI standpoint. While I'm not knocking that in and of itself (for many folks, retaining the phone UI on a large screen is preferable), I am pointing out that it still qualifies the Note(2) as just a really big phone, not a really small tablet.
All I'm lobbying for here is a proper TouchWiz option for the N7000 to be that really small tablet (with all the functionality and driver support of other TouchWiz builds) instead of a really big phone.
Some people prefer the phone UI, others the tablet UI. I don't want to sacrifice any functionality at all if I want to use a tablet UI out of preference. The same choice should be offered to everyone else too!

What would be a solution to have a ROM that you can connect in 160 dpi to your monitor with a MHL ?
As far as a I know aosp/aokp does not work, and stock devs managed to lower down to 240 max
Regards
Sounds like a really good idea, I hope some great dev make this possible.
The Note 10.1 has issues with multi-app performance (eg the apps aren't truly running simultaneously). Also, this is limited to only specific apps which can work multi-screen.
I don't really see what the benefit would be here. Plus doesn't it have more in common with the N7100 than the N7000?
Not much benefit for a ton of work which will likely be found useless upstream.
Also lately there have been very few dev projects for the Note 10.1 in general (take a look at their dev subforum)

I think there are even more new small features that I didn't put in list. It’s understandable that samsung didn't put those S-Pen features in our S3 however it’s actually still can be done for some of them. But S3 hardware is able to support the other features and Samsung should have put them in official JB ROM to further enhance our experience. Do you think they will ever come to S3 officially?
The new gallery and camera with the slow and fast motions are available, smart rotation and popup browser got ported as well. And paper artist can be installed with no problems.

Well the Note 2 was only released a few months after the S3 so you would expect these extra features , there's nothing really "revolutionary" that the Note 2 has that the S3 doesn't,i quite like the gallery in the Note 2 there was a flashable zip doing the rounds but no matter how many times i tried i couldn't get it tio work yet it was working fine when i flashed Dragon ROM (or was it Android Revolution) which had it included already.

Anyone have a gallery that works 100%?
As soon as I get my device I'm flashing Siyah, then will probably stick to stock, Flash new Camera and gallery and some other Note II stuff.
Either way Phones4u have both phones on display side by side and the Note II has the advantage with software, I just hope Samsung don't be stuck up and decide to bring most of the features to the S3.
If it is about other Samsung devices, and its capabilities which I'd like to have onboard my S3, I would mention 8GB RAM, 1GB Nvidia graphic, and 750GB HDD which I have on my Samsung laptop. It has simcard slot, so can be used as the phone, either.
Guys, RLY? While I can understand that someone would compare 9305 with 9300 because both are phones, calling for Note 2 seems a bit strange...
ups - almost forget to ask that someone should port 5x50W audio output from my Samsung Home Cinema system

Don't confused between hardware and software. Software is flexible while hardware is not. I said no point having s-pen features in s3 but not the other.

Underlined are what ported already. Bolded are what not ported yet. I think what most of us really want from Note 2 is Multi Window. We could care less about S Pen stuffs. I know you're talking about Samsung themselves giving it to us (instead of ports from amazing devs), but don't you remember the old days when Samsung refused to give ICS update to Galaxy S I9000? At the end of that device's life span, Samsung pushed an update giving many Galaxy S2 features like Touchwiz 4.0 including a few others. So, my money is on Samsung giving those features to S3 users. But the real question is when.

For the camera, if I'm not wrong only 1/3 of features is ported. Wasn't S3 too early to get value pack treatment? There should be one more android update. I understand what you mean, we might only get them when near eol.

Decision help: GNote vs Nexus 10

I need your help as I can't decide. I have a GNote 10.1 and love it... But not with TW. It's running CM10 and i like it. I am considering returning it for the N10.
One has SPen while the other has a screen, HDMI and is a Nexus.

What makes you think that another 20 page here will make a difference? It'll be the same people posting the same views.
Here's my $0.02: If you value functionality over PPI, then Note10.1 is a clear winner. Any other tablet (e.g., Asus Transformer, Galaxy Tab 2, Acer, etc.) will accomplish what N10 can do in terms of functionality alone. Of course, N10 will look gorgeous while performing those tasks with that amazing screen, but the difference ends there. The addition of stylus and the plethora of extra functions (e.g., S-Note, pdf annotation, office doc annotation, drawing/sketching, etc. etc.) make the Note 10.1 a clear choice for me. If these points are not important to you, then N10 might be a better choice. How often do you use the S-Pen or the related apps? If it's not part of your routine, then there's no need to stick with Note10.1, if you want to have the PPI and a "Nexus" device.
Good luck!
You'll always regret something as none phone/tab is perfect.

Touchwiz?

I know I'm probably going to get classed as a newbie now, but is it ever going to be possible to run the touchwiz front end on our Nexus 10s I know there lots of tie ins with the Samsung framework, but surely there must be a way of doing it as the nexus is made by Samsung so surely there must be some Samsung tie in in the actual framework of our tablets.
Cheers

Samsung make the unit, but have nothing to do with the software beyond the essential parts related to the hardware.
I am sorry if I sound as a troll, but why someone would like that horrible, sluggish and limited interface? I have a Galaxy S2 and I've used the last two incarnations of Touchwiz for almost one year... then I moved to Trebuchet and there is no way go go back.
Thats a bit unfair. It might not be visually to your taste, but its no slower than stock, in fact I often find it smoother.
There is maybe at best a 1% chance of a real touchwiz interface being ported. And a just slightly better chance of a fake interface being ported (just UI mods, no actual touchwiz functionality)
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies, Yeah I know there are haters and likers of the Touchwiz interface and to be honest I quite like it. I've been using it on my Samsung Galaxy Note II and I really have grown attached to it XD haha it probably isn't the fastest and slickest of launchers, but at the end of the day it's personal choice.

The problem is that the N10's biggest market is stock Android fans. As such, good luck finding someone willing to put in whatever effort is needed to make it happen.
Not to mention that the touchwiz software is proprietary and probably wouldn't be able to be posted here... Mabey I'm wrong tho

Well, that is easy to explain. First of all, the Note 2 has a quad core CPU, second of all the unit has to compute only a quarter of the amount of pixels per second for the display.
Ergo the Note 2 has an easier job.
If you don't like the N10, sell it. I was stuck with a LG phone for a year, and was mad at that piece of **** every single second I looked at it. Idk why I didn't sold it earlier, but it was a wise choice to sell it at all, and get myself a S3.

Well my point more was to the person who said Touchwiz was a laggy piece of trash. I was just stating that the Note 2 is actually far smoother than the Nexus 10.
But I probably will sell it. I bought an iPad 4 not too long ago and since then have barely touched my Nexus.
I am actually enjoying my Nexus 10 after root and CM10.1. However, I wouldn't likt touchwiz as much as I would like s pen support for note taking and sketching, and some features of the note 10.1 like the aNote HD would be awesome. Other than that it is an awesome tablet.

You aren't going to get spen support even if someone somehow ported touchwiz. That has to do with the actual hardware of the display.

What are the options for stock Android?

I think I saw an unofficial Cyanogenmod and AOKP, no Paranoid Android yet? That's my personal favorite. I'm not requesting or trying to come off in that way, I'm just very close to purchasing a tablet and I'd like it if I had those options. So you guys know if any ROM like that are being worked on?

There is only one really custom ROM for Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and it is only for P605 model: Cyanogenmod. That's all, others ROM are based on stocks so I wouldn't expect a huge developer support for this device. :/
Yup. CM looks promising. I hope that it is still around and will make a daily driver, once stock 4.4.2 is mega outdated. Until then i'll stick with that.
Does CM support the stylus in non-Samsung apps with stylus support?

The only difference is the pen and the extra 1 gb of ram we have on our model I believe (hardware wise). I don't care so much about CM11 right now since L is around the corner. Hopefully after L comes out, someone would port over CM12 or whatever to the P600.

The thing is that n8000 was not very good from the start, screen was not god at all, processor was good but not that much, battery was meh, plastic body was cheap as it gets. There is not much to do about the note 2014 though; pro tabs came up this year as the premium option for the tablet line and they are almost the same as our beloved tablet, only with amoled display. Maybe an amoled display instead of normal lcd, maybe 64 processor, and i find it difficult they will improve the pen technology; these are the only things i find possible to improve(apart from touchwiz of course).

N8000 was pretty good, yes the screen resolution wasn't super high but the images and video were very good. I get as much battery life out of the N8000 as the P605 and, considering most people get cases, didn't matter much what the body felt like as the leather case felt good anyway...
It could've easily handled the updated Android Samsung release for the P605 but never got anything over ICS (officially)...
Samsung seem to feel it's worth more in profits to release a new tablet, did we need the pro series, than to update existing hardware. Where is the financial advantage of keeping the older stuff up to date?
As for improving the pen technology, they did just that with the Note 4. Has better pressure sensitivity and writing ability than the Note 3. Anything else they'd do is really software improvements.
64 processor and 5gb of RAM would be nice though....

Hey, with that I completely agree; what i didn't agree on was on the "standing around with its pants around its ankles red with embarrassment" part. Far from the internals which are pretty good on both n8000 and p600, pretty much everything from n8000 externally could have been better and I dont think that is the case with the p600. Sure, you can upgrade the pen, the cpu to 64 bits and change lcd for amoled, but those are bells and whisles for the average user we know it has not much impact for the usability overall(like the comparison you make between n8000 and p605); damn, even if anyone takes a look at those pro tabs it is difficult to differentiate it from ours and they are the premium suite right now(contrast to 2013 like our tab was). My point is, even if Samsung decides to do a new Galaxy Note, which it will because its an allmost 2 year old tab, and with the addons we discussed, we cant possibly end up in embararassment as the n8000 did with all its superfluous flaws; even more, if, as you say, Samsung is interested in business more than its interested in the best and inovative technologies I think it will be the kind of jump galaxy s3 did to s4 and a lot of advertisement; if you dont have it in your hand and examine it a little bit most people wont see the difference.
And, n8010 got 4.4 before my p600 officially, so there is that. I bet they just decided not to use the new Touchwiz because Touchwiz is the less optimized crap and not because the internals coultdn't handle it becuase, as you said, n8000 internals are pretty good.

Just my opinion: if you're looking for a stock android option I'd go for another tablet. The note is a great product but only if you need and use the stylus. And you will probably lose at least some pen functionality with cm so I'd say it's not worth it.
Yea I'm starting to get the feeling this isn't the tablet for me. I'll just wait a few weeks for Nexus 9 then. Thanks guys.

CM11 knows nothing about the pen. But will in-app pen support work, for the handful of apps besides the then missing Samsung ones.

It should, and there are many alternatives available to the Samsung apps....

Pen detection with preasure sensitivity and attachment-detachment detection on the tablet still work under cm, or at least they worked on the n8000 note running cm. With those functions working, everything else is a gimmick. Multiwindow can be done with xposed and roms like omni rom, and I bet it would be a much more responsive multitasking. Omnirom works on my acer a500 for gods sake; now imagine a tablet with tegra 2 running today's Touchwiz. (Its Haloween time and we are supposed to think about ugly things). The only downside, or upside as I see it, are the gestures framework that on Touchwiz works anywhere on your tab; features like selecting anything and exporting it as an image or clicking the pen button and double tapping to open "Action Memo" wouldn't be on CM. Because of this though, pen button actually works according to the app using it. An example is Papyrus that gives you the option to change tools when the pen button is clicked. With this in mind, I would say it is worth it; Will we see it, I am not sure anymore. :crying:

Still, if you want anything with stock android, samsung is the worst company to buy from.
If you want some recomendations I say the following:
Shield tablet is a nice 8 inch tablet with 64bit processor and a passive stylus technology(It has stylus but it is not as good as Spen).
Surface 3 is a nice and expencive windows tablet if you are into that(Stylus as good as SPen but with the ups and downs from windows; Also $$$$).
Nexus 9 is an expensive but well worth it, gorgeous tablet but with no known pen functionality.(No directstylus 2.0 technology that we know of; but nexus and good speakers).
Please, if anyone have comments on this suggestions let me know. I love to hear about new tablets, functions and if feature's live to their names.
