Dead Gnex, get new Gnex or upgrade to Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Gnex is doing a great imitation of a brick. I think it may be a hardware thing. I've tried to follow instructions to get it to start, but the screen seems to be dead. I'm looking at getting another Gnex or upgrading to N4. I only got this phone in February, so I'm rather pissed this happened. No insurance and got it used off Ebay, so no warranty.
The biggest thing for me is battery life. I travel a lot, and finding an empty outlet in an airport is like finding a pot of gold sometimes! I have a giant 3850mAh battery for my Gnex. It makes it huge, but I'm more about function over form, and I like the phone a little thicker anyway. It is easier to hold. I can get 18+ hours of moderate to heavy use with this battery. How does the N4 compare in battery life. I know it won't last as long since it has a smaller battery than my behemoth, but I need at least 12 hours.
Thanks!
Rachel

For me, my use ..the Nexus 4 is perfect on battery life. And I would wait to see what the new nexus will bring before buying again. Try and score an N4 off craigslist.

N4, and maybe one of these (I use an older 5000mah model which works great):
http://www.newtrent.com/store/android-phone-external-battery-1.html

Battery is phenomenal if you know what you're doing. Get a custom kernel going, check your background apps, and keep a brightness lower than 50% and you'll be pleasantly surprised with how well this battery can perform.

If you want a larger battery and able to heavily use it then you should definitely get an s3/4 instead. This phone can give me 4 hours screen on time with latest cm stable, but that doesn't sound like that would be enough.

You'll get a lot of replies from people saying they are delighted that with their battery life and claim that something is wrong with you.
From my experience with the Galaxy Nexus, I know that battery life with Android varies all over the place depending on how you use the phone and what apps you install. Install the wrong apps or get file corruption--that you can't pin down--the battery will drain just sitting there unused.
if you intend to keep the phone, I suggest getting a 12000mAH external power pack. Thanks Google for not allowing us to readily swap the battery.
Galaxy nexus 2 hour screen on time. Carried a spare battery. Nexus 4 close to 4 hours screen. I guess what I am saying is I can cope because I came from actual bad battery life.

My iphone 4s only lasts 8 hours with heavy use. Streaming movies, Sirius sat, games, web surfing.
This phone outlasts that so far with the same stuff.
But its terrible you should sell it.....
The battery has been so so for me. I'm hoping when a good kernel and Ron come it will be a lot better. I benefit from working in range of a outlet .

GS3 battery dominates the N4 battery even tho it has the same 2100mah size.
I guess the AMOLED >>> IPS LCD in terms of battery drainage.
Sucks! I guess the Nexus 4 battery life will be only slightly better than my One X =(
I personally love the threads where former galaxy note owners and droid razer maxx owners ***** about battery life.

I swear guys I normally use same apps and on Note2 I was able to get day and day and half with heavy use and teo days with light use..but this N4 just drains battery like theres no tomorrow. Esp browsing internet..youtube..and other stuff that pulls a lot of data... The only way I can save battery is it i put brightness to almost zero and turn off wifi and data completely. I have all the normal stuff syncing and not often...facebook pulls data every 2 hours and other apps as well. I really love this device but WHY WHY WHY Google/LG decided to have non removable battery. I RESPECT Samsung so much more because they give you removable and decent battery and also give you SD card option which I can live without but its nice to have. I guess you get what you pay for.

GS3 most certainly does not dominate....
Amoled is only more efficient for blacks. Every other color it displays uses more power on AMOLED vs LCD. In fact, white uses 70% more power in AMOLED displays than LCD.
Watching 1hr video on Netflix over hspa+ at full brightness today dropped my battery from 80% to 29%. My galaxy nexus with the same use would have dropped maybe half of that.
Does that sound normal?
I'll be able to check if I have a defective unit pretty soon. I have a RMA for my earpiece speaker not working, but I'm literally stuck on a charger at all times, lol. I honestly don't really care about the crappy battery life, I still love this phone!
On the plus side, it seems to charge as fast as it loses charge, lol

Getting 3.5 hours screen on time here . with sync on , GPS on , screen 75% brightness. No issues here ,battery's great !!! " tweaking battery is waste of time . try letting it die charge it while off then another hour while on then pull charger , ( if anyone replies with letting die is bad your wrong , and u can send me all the links u want your still wrong
User error. You left a phone that has a massive 3100 mah battery for one with 2100.
My battery seems to be fine, previously I had a GSM GNex with the extended battery and my N4 has done just as well based off my usage.
I remove it from the charger around 7 a.m., use it all day for text, calls, browsing, emails. When I get home at 6 I am around 35-40% so I charge it for about 45 minutes to get me through the evening and then charge all night.
This routine has gotten me through virtually every phone I have had with a few exceptions (Treo 750 and SX-66 come to mind)
4.5 hours of screen on time is my average so far. Roughly 50% better then my Galaxy Nexus. Other than GPS remaining off, I haven't done anything special to conserve battery life. Not sure if I'm the exception, and I do wish I could swap the battery, but I can't complain too much.

[Q] Nexus 4 on order, arrival soon, what can I expect ;) ?

So, they have apparently sorted out the stock and supply problem. I <cough> borrowed the wife's credit card and have placed the order.
They say it will ship in 1 to 2 weeks, I can live with that.
The light-hearted question I have is, once I've gotten over the excited rush of playing with the phone for a while, what have your experiences been? Good or bad! I've heard that the battery life is not great but to be honest I am not so bothered with that. I have a charger and work, and home, in the car - I can even charge it at the pub/bar I go to
Keep an eye out for issues worthy of an RMA. From there, the only thing to expect is awesomeness. You'll want to calibrate the screen color and gamma, though.
Has battery life been that bad? Because I just ordered one myself to replace my wife's 3GS.

Utter tripe. You either have a rouge app, or you have the brighness turned up full or something else stupid.
I easily get a full day out mine with moderate use. It's about 50%-60% remaining when I get home in the evening from work.
I got around 3 hours of screen on time and a full 18-20 hours standby on stock rom with the usual useage of whatsapp and gmail syncing, with web use and texting etc, and now on custom rom, I am getting up to 4.5 hours screen on.
So, battery is good, phone is super fast and smooth, camera is great if you take time to learn how to use it and especially with HDR on and a bit of post picture editing. Only down side is music volume and quality which is average at best. In my opinion.
Thanks for the feedback. I just hope my wife can make the transition from iOS to android.
I think depending whether you are on WiFi or HSPA will make a huge difference for battery. From what I understand, when using HSPA, the standby battery life is horrible.
The screen is usually the single biggest threat to your battery. And the N4 can get 4-6 hours of "screen on" time depending on use. As others have said, it can be on standby for 15+ hours, but you can completely kill the battery in 4 hours or less if you are using a cpu intensive app.
Custom roms and battery saving apps can def help out though.
I ordered mine at 3pm on wednesday and it was with me by 3pm on thursday .. so slightly quicker than the 1-2 weeks they quote!
Unlock the boot loader, doesn't matter if you decide on staying stock or what. Having your boot loader unlocked right of the bat allows you to keep your apps if you do decide to root /flash.

You'll sadly probably find that the screen is *uneven* in it's tint (yellow probably) and brightness. Because it's uneven, "calibrating" will help a little maybe but will not fix any issues with the screen. On the other hand, with luck (which I wish you) you may find that your screen is pretty much perfectly uniform in brightness and tone top to bottom, left to right. (Check using the Mail app and minimise the keyboard) I've had 5 so far and none of them are acceptable to me. Otherwise the phone is truly incredible in use. Buttery smooth, responsive, great. The screen very generally is amazing too. It's just not even as it should be. Let me know how yours is - i'd be interested to know because if yours has good uniformity I'll order another. Good luck!

Should I get a Nexus 4 coming from a Gnex?

Hi, well, there is this opportunity, there is a friend who is buying a N4, he is not sure about keeping it and I proposed him:
I give you my Gnex (With 2000mAh original battery) + 120 USD and you give me you N4.
My Gnex is aroung 6 months old and the N4 would be new.
What would you do?
Best regards.
Hmm...why not after all? The Nexus 4 is a great phone.
If I were you I'd tell your friend to keep his N4. That's a silly deal.
I guess if you don't really need that $120, might as well get the N4. It's a great phone.
Of course, you should stick with a nexus device

So the GSM Galaxy Nexus wasn't a "real" Nexus either?
Sent from my Nexus 4 on T-Mobile
I think your friend would be coming out on top of this deal but no one is really losing.
The GSM Gnex is selling for like $400-500, so if that's what you have than price wise you would be losing since the N4 is only $300-$400.
If you have a Verizon GNex, they are selling for much less, like $200, so than your offer makes sense. But if you have Verizon you realize you can't use the N4 on their network, right?
I just switched from a Gnex (Verizon) to the N4 (on t-mo) and the N4 is far superior. Why you friend wouldnt want to keep his N4 is beyond me.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I did it and haven't looked back. And I had my gnex less than six months. At first I loved having no amoled banding but missed the colors. Its not a day and night difference but you should definitely notice the extra processing power and ram. A custom kernel fixed the colors. I sold my gnex for 150$ and bought my n4 for 350$ (two day old used, didn't want to wait for play store delays). I haven't missed my gnex yet and the extra battery life if also welcomed.
Hi,
Now he is asking for 150 USD.. He will include one distronic case and screen protector. What do you think ?
What worries me is the non-removable battery and its battery life, my gnex has the original extended battery (its 2000mah) and I am getting really good battery life (between 14-18hours idle and between 3:30 and 4:00 screen on time).
The glass back... Well I will have to be really careful...

The diztronic case is a great case. I use that case all the time. I have dropped it many times and my phone is live and well. The non-removable battery will last for quite some time. It's made to last longer than standard lithium ion batteries like the one you use in the GNexus. You're get the same amount or even better screen time with the Nexus 4 as well. You may achieve that on stock but running on custom kernels and roms will abolsutely deliver the 3-4 hour screen on time mark. On a day when I don't play games I get over 4hours+ of screen time on Franco or Trinity kernel.
Speaking of extended battery, Zerolemon the company that makes extended batteries will release an extended battery for the Nexus 4 sometime in May with the capacity up to 4000mAh of power. That should last a few days without plugging it in.

since you are coming from a gsm gnex, your battery life should be about the same. i was only able to get about 3hrs screen time max on my verizon gnex. i wouldnt worry about the non removable battery, you more than likely will never have to replace it during the time you own the phone, and if you do, ebay has brand new batteries for around 40$. no case or screen protector on mine since the day i got it, my screen has zero scratches and my back has cracked or given me trouble yet (knock on wood)

Has CM ever had good battery life on the M?

I'm just wondering because the biggest complaint with 10, 10.1 and now 10.2 seems to have been battery life. In fact that tends to be the case for almost all of the custom ROMs with few exceptions. (uXylon has great battery life for a non-stock custom ROM, for instance).
So what likelihood is there to expect very much improved battery life on CM 10.2? Any thoughts?
BTW - this isn't a gripe on the devs' work, I really want to know what is reasonable to expect.

battery life is what you make of it - power users are going to need to a recharge during the day while casual users should be able to get through the day just fine.
in my experience, for the most part, battery life has been fairly consistent. I can go a full day (6am-11pm) on a single charge so long as I keep my on-screen time under 3 hours. this is very acceptable to me. there is no need for me to go 24 hours given that I sleep for at least 7 of them (thus, I'll charge it then)
Yeah, that's how I have seen it as well. It's all relative to how you use your phone and what your expectations are. But you know we constantly see post from guys who aren't content with battery life no matter what it is. That's why I was looking for some feedback on what is usual, customary and reasonable.

Good to see another fellow R800x user adopt an XT907 (I've counted 5 so far)
Still waiting on official ICS...
I think this is a great question to ask. While some are content with battery life, others are not. For example, there is no way I could continue to use Liquid rom and expect any sort of reasonable battery life with how I use my phone. As much as I loved the rom itself, it simply wouldn't last long enough between charges. With AOKP I normally charge my phone in the evening (then unplug it.. Never leaving it charged overnight), and once in the afternoon and I'm good. I'm on it constantly and one charge a day with my normal usage never did it for me.. Even on stock. For some reason some roms just seem to handle battery life far better than others no matter what I am doing on my end to conserve battery power (Screen brightness, Greenify, etc). Over the weekend I was able to get 19 hours out of it with far less usage than normally since we were out enjoying the day at a winery. To me, the battery life I get with AOKP seems better or equal to what it was before unlocking the bootloader.
Sent from my Droid Razr M using xda app-developers app
as a power user im on my phone CONSTANTLY playing games and tethering and whatnot. i have to say i have found CM 10.1 roms to be quite generous on battery so far. i throw my CPU up to 1500 min/max when i plan to play COD: BOZ or Dead Trigger and ill get quite a few hours out of it off the charger before i get warned about it dying.
AOKP and Slim based ROMs have had pretty good battery life for me. When I was running CM10, it was nearly identical to stock battery life, but CM10 is 4.1.2 based. If an OEM 4.2.2 based ROM is released, they'll be able to sync it against 4.2.2 AOSP and make things work well (atleast, that's how I picture it in my head). With that being said, I am running Illusion, with Arrghh's kernel and XBreeder, and I'm sitting at about 12% battery, 36 hrs of up time, and 2.5hrs of screen on time. This is about as good as what I would see when I was running tweaked stock.
Battery life is also dependent on how long you've had your current OS running (in my experience, anyway). A lot of us around here are crackflashers and we never let a ROM settle in. I was getting average battery use on Ilusion, but it's gotten better in the last few days.
I got a new battery off amazon and been getting great battery life again. I think i borked my old one.
AOKP almost always lasts me through the day unless I go over 3 hours of screen time
