MY STORY:
So I was also a newb at one point (weren't we all), and I really didn't know who to go too. XDA came into my life and I was so happy. The problem, however, is that sometimes the terminology and that "new person" feeling was making me feel on edge. That, however, was a while ago. I know a lot more, but I wanted to make this thread to try and help out some of the newer people who are entering the Android world.

Quick update guys...
09/09/2013
So as many of you know, school has started and I've hit the books. I barely get any time for XDA (which I am very, very sorry for!), so I won't be updating as often. I will try to update as much as I can, but with a pretty rough schedule this year, I'll see what I can do.

Glad to see someone had the guts to start this thread.
I too, for one, get tired of the condescending attitude of people who forget that they were once noobs.
Congrats!

Easiest way is to do a backup before flashing any kernel, rom, or mod. Then you can always revert should there be an issue or problem.

MF9 hotspot mod issues
I was running rooted MDL on my sprint gs4 but wanted to update to MF9 so i unrooted then updated to stock MF9 i then used cfautoroot to root the stock MF9 which worked just fine.... i attempted the hotspot mod using the odexed MF9 "system.jar" and "system.odex" files then did a reboot.....the replaced files soft bricked my phone....it was stuck on the sprint splash screen it would not go any further....i had to re-flash back to stock MDL to get my phone booted up again....I'm not sure what the issue is with the MF9 hotspot mod because the MDL hotspot mod works like a charm. If anyone has any insight into this problem all help would be greatly appreciated....because i would much rather be updated to the latest software but i still need my hotspot feature to work

I would suggest you to take a look here: MF9 Hotspot Mod

I have a question too, actually.
Flashing to a new kernel is the same way as flashing a ROM, right? I heard that you need to fix permissions, but some say you shouldn't...
So after flashing to a new kernel, is fixing permissions required?

I did the exact same thing, but it worked perfectly the only thing. I'm not sure what mod caused it xposed, prl enabler, probably one of these that made my phome so slow to boot. It takes twice as long as before. Anyway, I'm guessing you probably downloaded the incorrect file.

I've heard several cases where the new mf9 update reduces boot speed.

Alright, here goes:
I am rooted (TWRP Recovery which I boot to through Goo Manager), SuperSU, Rom Toolbox, Adblock Plus, Hotspot Mod.
I achieved root via CF-Autoroot a while back, pre-MF9 update. As such, I am still running on MDL.
Now, let's assume I wanted to update to MF9 and then install an MF9-based ROM.
I'm a bit confused as to the steps. I think they go something like:
1) Uninstall any Root only apps (or move them somewhere? freeze? something else?)(And I can't very well remove SuperSu or TWRP Recovery can I?)
2) Boot into recovery and do a factory wipe?
3) Move the OTA update file back from SD card to /cache.
4) Unroot (no idea how to safely do this)
5) Install OTA update.
6) Re-root (does the method change with MF9? If so, what do I need to do?)
7) Flash Rom via recovery (which installs as part of the rooting process, right?)
8) If necessary, install any SU apps not otherwise baked into my newly selected rom.
Is that about right? And can you clarify the specific execution of some of the above steps, as inquired about parenthetically?
I appreciate your help in advance (though I certainly understand, given that I am asking a bunch of questions, thus requiring a fairly substantial reply) if you don't wind up answering.

Sounds like the phone was never activated in your girls name and it is still under the previous owners info. You can't wipe that away. You need to switch the user info by calling Sprint, sounds like you were scammed and you are going to have a phone with a bad ESN that cannot be used. Good luck.

For 1&4:
Also, you can remove root access if you would like too! In superSU, there is an option to unroot the phone in the settings area. As for recovery, I would NOT remove TWRP if I were you. If anything were to happen to your phone, you could use TWRP to restore it. Speaking of that, MAKE SURE you back up your data! Must people recommend nandroid, but I find TWRP back up to be just as good.
For 2:
TWRP gives you an option to wipe your data. When you but recovery, just go into wipe. A screen will pop up and will ask you to slide the slider to confirm the back up. You will lose your data, but it will get any updating/ROM issues resolved.
For 5&6:
I would recommend reading this! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480
For 7:
You don't need to flash any ROM if you're running on stock (stock means you're running the ROM that came with the device)
For 8:
Make sure you double check with the compatibility of everything you install! Some things are not ready for mf9, so be cautious!
Just hit the thanks if I helped at all!

You don't have to Unroot to update to MF9. Follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357471
Its a little complicated but you will learn a ton and everything after will be easy

With ROMs like blue Kuban that have a hacked hotspot, do you have to install a third party hotspot app or can you just use the toggle they provide to turn on hotspot without being charged from Sprint?

Not sure about Blue Kuban but, the normal hack doesn't require a 3rd party app.
You do want to be careful about not over doing it on your data plan.

[Q] regarding: Loki + TWRP + Motochopper CASUAL

Hey folks.
I attempted to ask this in the most relevant thread, but as a new user I can not.
My question pertains to the CASUAL root tool for the S4.
Developed by AdamOutler.
Described in the thread "[ROOT[RECOVERY] Loki + TWRP + Motochopper CASUAL-R527b release"
The tool looks pretty amazing.
But I do have some questions.
Please forgive me in advance I am an UBER NEWBIE.
Many of the terms thrown around here are completely foreign to me.
(Yes, I've searched for that knowledge - but perhaps you are underestimating my noobness. )
(Yes, I have read the "[HOW-TO] The All-In-One Root/Backup/Flash Guide - [I337 & I337M]" thread as well... it helped but... yeah still a noob.)
FYI: The only reason I want to root my S4 (AT&T) is so I can remove the crappy bloatware, and also configure the anti-theft/find-phone features of the avast! app.
Ok so on to the questions...
1) Once this is done what's to stop some update from my carrier un-doing it all?
2) If that were to happen how much pain would I be in for?
3) If the only way to protect one's self from this is to somehow disable OS/firmware updates... is the only way to get future OS updates through a ROM?
4) This TWRP thing seems to be a backup/recovery tool?
I gather that it also enable ROMs flashing, etc?
I've read others like "Titanium Backup" because it can freeze/remove the bloatware.
Are they both kinda the same thing?
Will the two conflict?
5) This "Nandroid" is another backup tool?
Am I correct in my understanding that the TWRP leverages nandroid - or are they comepeting solutions.
6) Is Nandroid a system function or some other tool that needs installed?
Thanks a bunch folks!

TWRP - is a recovery, so you can perform nandroid backups, and to flash roms, and to restore backups. Nothing more, nothing less.
Titanium Backup is a app you use within the rom, to backup and restore apps with, you can read more on this going to the market, it will explain this app's features and what it does.
They are not the same, 2 different programs, that do 2 different things.
Question 5 & 6 answered in #4 answer.

So does the Root tool (in this case the CASUL script by Adam) do something to shut down carrier updates or I need to do something extra?
Also if one were to ODIN back to stock... and get an update... and then re-root...
I assume you could get an old backup from an external storage area and try to get all your "stuff" back?

Once you root,, it changes the rom status to custom, so the update see's that and does NOTHING. if you odin back to stock, un-root, you can force updates, but be careful with updates, carriers are patching things so we can not do what we do, and that is to run custom roms on phones THAT WE OWN!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I figured Axman may know.
In the past on my S2, I would flash a lot of roms. maybe after every 5 or 10 I would odin back to stock, boot it up, re-root, re-twrp, then flash another rom. just to get a very clean slate in a sense.
If I were to do this with the S4, you dont think the ATT update would get pushed in the 30 mins to an hour that the phone is in its stock state, do you? I dont want to get mf3'd.

hehe it could, but highly unlikely, and if you feel that it may happen, do what I do, remove the sim until you get rooted, and then put the sim back in and complete the setup. Your not going to get calls in that time period anyways.
Good luck.

I'm just throwing my limited experience out. I have never went back to stock via Odin simply to get a "clean slate." Completing a full wipe including a system format in recovery will be sufficient for a clean OS. I would reserve Odin flashing as a last resort for when problems aren't being remedied by a full wipe and format via recovery.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its my understanding if you're rooted and still stock the MDL will still update to MF3 unless you either completely flash a custom ROM or rename the OTA files that At&t have on our devices.
where you end up, depends on where you start.

somewhat, but as soon as you root, your phone status is custom correct? therefor how can it update? Yes, it is better to do a custom rom, but you can still stay on MDL and never get updates, freezing the samsung update will work, but I gave the easiest way in his situation.

Hi...I'm another noob with a question about this. I also just used CASUAL to root my phone yesterday. I am definitely rooted but my Device Status actually still shows Official. Following the info in another thread, I used ES File Explorer's Root Manager to rename the wssyncmldm.apk.
Info from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268946
The thread was actually written for a previous update, but renaming the apk should still be relevant.
Maybe this was overkill, but...

I was just rooted and it showed custom status after, so no updates, you must check the status. just flashing a kernel will change the status, if you are going to root and install a recovery, some things are to go without saying.
Btw, I have learned, that nothing with information is an overkill, if you haven't notice xda is a bunch of peoples ideas and such, and many do not work for others, it is a hit miss.

Yeah...maybe I am referring to the wrong thing, but I was surprised that Settings > More > About Device > Status > Device Status still said "Official" on mine. I know CASUAL succeeded. TWRP is installed, SuperUser is installed. And I was able to use ES File Explorer's Root Manager to change system to R/W and rename the apk. So even though I'm very much an android novice, I'm pretty certain I'm rooted. I don't necessarily plan to flash a rom yet...but since I was still on MDL I wanted to retain the current ability to do so!
Is there some other place that it would show Custom as opposed to Official? That's actually why I went ahead and renamed that file.
texasniteowl said:
Yeah...maybe I am referring to the wrong thing, but I was surprised that Settings > More > About Device > Status > Device Status still said "Official" on mine. I know CASUAL succeeded. TWRP is installed, SuperUser is installed. And I was able to use ES File Explorer's Root Manager to change system to R/W and rename the apk. I did not mean to confuse anyone. Yes you did the right thing by renaming the the file. if your device says official then this step is needed. mine said custom. umm i stand corrected fellows..another step is needed. thanks for the oversight. i am only human..im not a animal.

[Q] Hotspot Mod and Wifi tether on Stock Rooted Rom?

Hello all!
I am currently running triforce rom on my s4, i really like the rom it just doesn't work with some apps i use. For example Ent online banking app and nfl fantasy football app. But my question is, if i restore my phone back to stock rooted rom, will i still be able to use the wifi tether app? without sprint finding out that is?
Thank You
you should as long as you retain root
and if wifi tether doesn't run properly, you can just flash the hotspot mod instead. That bypasses the carrier check as well.

Assuming you are rooted, and have a custom recovery installed, it should be a quick update.
Are you planning to install MF9? or stay on MDL?
Regardless, download the appropriate version from the thread below (check your settings -> More -> About device, and look at the build number. Also, check and make sure you download the right odex/deodex version (the thread below has detailed instructions on how to identify the right version)
Download the right version to your phone's internal storage, and boot into your custom recovery, and flash it from there. (I assume you have a nandroid backup of your current software - if not, you should make one before you flash anything)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950
(again, I cannot stress this enough - make sure you download the right version - there are a LOT of folks who downloaded the wrong version, and then start a thread asking "Why is my phone stuck at the yellow Sprint screen?" etc. It is still recoverable, but adds unnecessary headache)

Thank you for the reply! The farthest i have gone on this and other phones just is to root as I got wifi tether on it and was a happy camper. But with that said, I am open to going further and doing all these flashes. Also, I downloaded the correct version and made sure I m going the right path and did the replacing odex.bak files and all the other ones, But nothing happened. I will prob maybe update for 4.3 but for now MDL will do. I Just need a good guide for a noob on how to do a nandroid backup. Thanks for all the tips.
Update: just did the flash method and it still does not show up, any help would be appreciated it. As a side note dont know if this can help, but my phone has been unlocked for international use, it was manually activated and sprint apps not installed. on MDL stock rom.
What recovery do you have? (TWRP? CWM? something else?)
Are you sure you are rooted?
Are you on the Stock MDC ROM?
When you flashed the MDC hotspot mod, did you see any errors in recovery? Or did it indicate successful flash?
After flashing the mod, do you see the hotspot icon under settings-connections? What happens if you turn it on?
Also, I noticed that you said "it was manually activated and sprint apps not installed"
What is the manual activation that you referred to? Typically, after activation, the phone downloads the Sprint network updates etc, and I believe it is at that time, that it downloads the necessary files for the regular hotspot. These are the files that then get modified by the hotspot mod that I had linked to. Are you saying that you skipped the part where it would have downloaded the Sprint updates? If so, that may be why the hotspot mod isn't working (since it doesn't have anything to modify).
Unlocking for international use (assuming it was done by Sprint) should not cause any issues. I'm unlocked as well.
jj14 is right, without the sprint apps installed there is no hotspot to mod. You will have to find an alternative wifi tether app or redo the activation process and let the Sprint apps install.

My Knox was tripped by one of the failed attempts. ... As far as I know the kingo route did not trip Knox unless the counter only stays on 1... If it adds up then no kingo did not trip my Knox that is something I'm not to sure of may be something to ask one of the ppl that know a lil more but I do know that Knox only voids the Samsung warranty. ..If something does happen u can still pay the deductible to replace ur phone... wich is only $150 that's as long as u have the insurance coverage on ur plan... As long as u follow the steps wich is really simple u won't brick... sph-l720 is not on the list for kingo but it does work that's what I used... All the other ways says that the su is out of date so I recommend if u are going to do it use kingo after I did that I downloaded rom manager n installed a CWM my phones working fine
What's up team,
still getting used to things around here and I apologize for the stupid questions in advance! However, you all have been amazing and helpful to me thus far and I appreciate it.
So, I finally decided to root my Sprint GS4 thanks to the helping hand of the great QBKing77
I was trying to go even further and be able to do the free hotspot which QBKing77 had a video for as well. However, I noticed that the download links that he had supplied us folks with did not include baseband version is MK2 - which is what I am currently running (whatever that means.)
So among several other questions, first and foremost; what can I do to get the free hotspot/tether with MK2? Should I simply download one of the other links instead or will this damage my device?
Also, as said, I am new to this. I just rooted my device for the first time and am unaware what the difference is between odexed and deodexed? What does this mean, what is the difference, and how do I know which one I am?
Leading in to that, I installed TWRP custom recovery. I tried to click on back up then select "boot," "system," and "data." However, it is saying that the attempt was failed. I am going to assume that this is because the whole back up would be roughly 3gb's and it says that I have only 502mb's available on my phone.
I read somewhere a while back that I could delete stock apps from my phone after I route. How can I do this? I am guessing that this would free up a significant amount of storage and thus could accomplish the back up. Is it safe to delete stock apps? How can I know which apps I can safely uninstall?
Thanks guys! Any other tips or tricks or words of advice...even constructive criticism are welcomed!

You can find the MK2 hotspot mod in this thread post #337: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950&page=34
Make sure you download the correct one. If you only rooted the stock rom then you need the odexed version, if you downloaded and installed a custom rom then you need the deodexed one. As you guessed, if you use the wrong one you will brick your phone.
TWRP backup, you need an external sdcard if you want to make backups or your internal memory will max out. If you have an external sdcard, look on the twrp backup page closely and you should see an option to switch to the external sdcard.
Stock apps delete, you can delete stock apps if you are rooted but be careful, if you don't know which ones can safely be removed then search on here to make sure you don't delete one that is required. You will need a file explorer app that has root permissions to access the system partition. I would recommend an app like titanium backup to remove these apps so that you can first back them up so you can replace it if you mess up. Again, you should use an external sdcard or it doesn't make sense to back up if you are doing it to save space.

[Q] no wifi rooted at&t S4 4.4.2 NB1

greetings!
I've been searching for hours and bashing my brains trying to get wifi working. It originally broke after an OTA update
tried all the tips and still nothing works permanently. The things I have tried are too numerous to remember or list.
It's not a hardware issue as wifi can work for periods of time but it always breaks - I assume because of an update that downloads and breaks it.
i see talk of reflashing "modules" with safestrap but safestrap has never worked properly and now does not work at all ("unfortunately safestrap has stopped") Can modules be flashed from Odin?
TIA !
Sorry to hear about your troubles man. Been there, done that...
IMHO, if you don't have hardware issues, this what you should do:
ODIN to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2616221 (post 1, the Returning to Stock / ODIN section)
After that root
Root with towel root (https://towelroot.com/)
Install SuperSU (PlayStore) and let it disable Knox.
Install BusyBox (PlayStore) and let it cook
Install SELinux Mode Changer (PlayStore). Run and set it to Permissive.
Install Safestrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=45693712)
Now it's time to flash you favorite rom (Safestrap has the list). Copy the following to your SD card:
Your favority ROM
SuperSU.zip file. (http://download.chainfire.eu/451/Sup...erSU-v2.01.zip)
Your modem zip file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...96&postcount=1).
I337 Build.prop/APN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...81&postcount=9)
Same boat as well I believe, need help please.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T I337 ucufnbn1 MDF. And I've tried to get into the UMTS menu with every possible number and trick I can find on Google, here, YouTube. And nothing works. I just want to be able to sim unlock it and also be able to put cwm recovery on it so I can put ROMs on it. I do have it rooted with Towel and have busy box installed as well as SU. Cyanogen's website picks it up by its other name jfelte or whatever and has a lot of ROMs. If someone could please help me finish getting the rest of the way, that would be greatly appreciated.
Few screens to help out
Here are a few screen shots that I hope help someone out. Please let me know what I can do if anything.

Ok , well I honestly appreciate your help with this. With this setup can I install any ROMs at all? Am I limited to certain ones or can I install any compatible ones for my model? I know sometimes when your on a certain stock ROM your stuck with only like certain types. Like Paranoid or whatever it is, and a few others.

This mini-guide should work!
The problem is, in order to get WiFi working, you need to install the NB1 modules, but to do that, you need to install Safestrap. However, you can not install Safestrap because the app keeps closing on you. There is a simple fix to this, which I will explain later. For now, just read this WHOLE post BEFORE you do anything, and keep in mind that I am NOT held liable if you mess up your phone. Use this at your own risk.
1.) Root your phone
If you're already rooted with something like SuperSU or Superuser, skip this. If not, read ahead. Download and install the Towelroot APK file attached to this post, open it, and click 'make it ra1n'. If your phone didn't reboot, now you have root (they need to trademark that). Now, down below, I also included the APK for SuperSU. Download and install it. Now open it. When you open it, let it install the 'Normal' way, not via the 'TWRP/CWM' way. Also, when it asks you to disable KNOX, say yes, wait a couple of minutes (it will still be loading) and reboot your phone. Open up SuperSU again, click 'Yes' to disable KNOX again, and now you have a good base to start from.
2.) Install Safestrap AFTER fixing the error
The error your are getting is easily fixed. Go to the Play Store and install 'SELinux Mode Changer'. Open it, grant it root access, and change the mode to 'Permissive'. Now, open up Safestrap again (you mentioned you already installed it), and it shouldn't force close. Click 'Install', and if the 'Reboot to Recovery' option below is not grayed out after that then it worked.
3.) Download and install the NB1 modules
On your phone, download the included NB1 modules ZIP file I attached for you, and once that is done you need to reboot. After the Galaxy S4 logo, you'll see a screen that says 'SAFESTRAP: DISABLED' and there will be a little robot. TIP: To enter Safestrap, press the menu button (physical, hardware key) under 'Recovery' at that screen. To continue to Android, press the back key (again, physical) under the 'System' tab. For now, press the menu button under 'Recovery'. Now, click 'Install' which should be in red, click 'Add zips', and navigate to your Downloads folder. Now click on the NB1 modules ZIP you just downloaded. Swipe to install, and reboot. This time, hit the back key under 'System'.
All done!
Now, Android should (and will) boot up, and you'll have working WiFi! If, for some odd reason, you don't have WiFi- do NOT panic! Just search around for the MF3 modules and flash those! All is good, all is good. A lot of this guide was taken from my post about my personal method of SIM unlocking the AT&T Galaxy S4 without the dialer codes or an AT&T SIM. It was just modified a little to work for you.
Remember, hit thanks! :good:

Go back to towelroot. After rooting use a root checker to verify root. Don't worry about updating SU Binaries or disabling Knox, if you are planning to flash a custom rom this will all get taken care of as pretty much every rom has done this for you, you should still be able to grant permissions without updating. If the busybox app you are using doesn't work, try another one, the one I always use is created by a Steven something (can't remember last name).
If you are not going to flash a custom rom follow the instructions in the 3rd post found here.

Just to make sure, you did install SuperSU prior to running root checker? Permissions are required to verify root.
If so, I would reflash the stock firmware via Odin and start over. The firmware file can be found here. After flashing through Odin boot into recovery and factory reset/wipe cache. Then try rooting again, make sure you have the latest towelroot.

For an obvious answer I just did towelroot then root checker. Because none of the super users work.. and I'll have to do that when I get off work tonight. Would prefer a different route though.

As I tried to say before, you don't need to update the binaries for SuperSU to do its job. Just install it, don't worry about opening it or trying to disable Knox. Something about NC4 OTA doesn't like rooting as Verizon continues to try to lockdown our phones as much as they can.
ATM, Towelroot is the best root method I know of as it is a one click method that works, I haven't seen anywhere on these forums that it has failed for our device short of users missing some important link in the chain. I haven't tried kingo or the chinese version of rooting since being on KitKat so I don't know if they work on the current firmware nor have I seen anyone talking about them since Towelroot was discovered for our device.
Steps to successful root, busybox, safestrap, custom rom are in the second post of this thread. My only addition to the steps would be to install a switch user app (i.e. SuperSU) in between Steps 1 & 2. You can switch out any 4.4 rom for the Stock rom provided by BeansTown106 as long as you make sure to flash the NC2 kernel in the appropriate step. The only exception would be if you are planning on using Jasmine Rom as hsbadr has recently rebuilt his 2 versions on the NC4 kernel, in which case you don't need to do anything special, simply flash via Safestrap following the instructions in his OP. (I apologize if you already understand all this, just trying to be thorough so we don't have to keep going back and forth).
Alright well with just supersu installed and towellroot ran busy box fails each time.
These are the steps I took with a fresh factory reset. USB debugging. Towelroot install supersu install busy box run busybox get that error I showed above. Rage quit.
Interesting enough this busy box installer shows that my phone has root but fails to install busybox

At this point I don't know what else to try other than reflashing the stock firmware via Odin and starting again.

Only use the stock slot, there are problems with battery drain and other things on rom slots.

Wait wouldn't using the stock slot be dangerous? And I'm coming across another problem. Every rom in the forums I try does not boot up accept for jasmine rom 2.3 I'd like to use a different rom but it's not liking me lol. But it's safe to flash a rom in the stock slot? If so I'll have jasmine in slot one as a backup. Battery drain is outrageous. Even with zero lemons 10,000 nah battery it blows through it.

Using the stock slot isn't really dangerous... You can always boot into download mode and reflash the stock rom with Odin. You will need the unified Kitkat kernel with most roms. And each rom should have instructions including flashing it at some point.

I would recommend using 2.4.1 instead, it is a more recently updated version of the S5 port. I believe you can flash the unified kernel in Odin before you install the rom (as long as you are already running Kitkat, otherwise wait until you have a Kitkat rom installed). As for 2.3, I don't remember if it needed the unified kernel, but it shouldn't hurt anything to use it anyways on Jasmine roms. If you do go with 2.3 I would look into the patches (2.3.1 - 2.3.4 i think) for stability/bug fixes, although I am not sure if they all need to be flashed or just the last one as I never used 2.3 (I am happily using 1.9 lol).
Does anyone have the current link for downloading TR v3? I can't seem to find it, and I am debating picking up a note 3 in place of my S5...
