Hey, My battery doesnt like being used, It kills itself, During normal use, say, just having the chat app Line, open for 20 minutes chatting away, on auto brightness, the battery often goes from 100% down to 85%.
I dont think this is normal, but correct me if i am wrong..
And I see stories of people saying 'my battery drains fast overnight!'
Well im sure that if i left mine without plugging it in overnight it would drain flat LONG before morning....
Im wondering if this could be related to RAM usage at all, Because even though im on an AOSP based rom, My ram usage is always arounf 1-1.6GB
Or if not that, What kind of things could be causing my issue ?
I tried the battery section of settings, and it usually says screen uses all the power, But sometimes, on low brightness, with 1-2 apps running (im the kind of person that closes what he doesnt need)
the battery monitor widget reports a drain of well in excess of 1300mah D:
Battery life is very important to me as i only really have a single chance per day to charge ;___;
Any advice on what I could do is appreciated c:
Im fine with disabling cores/underclocking or any other [major and efficient] battery saving tricks.
Phone info in my sig.
tl;dr: help me save battery. does ram use much power?
afaik, RAM usage isn't battery related. As usual, unused RAM = wasted RAM.
Perhaps you have insane wakelocks or apps that run in the background that automatically updates itself hourly/something. (E.g., Facebook updates itself hourly by default)
If you happen to be rooted, you should try out the apps Greenify and DS Battery Saver

Using Auto Brightness will cause using more battery, use BetterBatteryStats to check what's using your battery or maybe wakelocks

Thanks guys! Ill check those apps out and post back with anything i find!
Edit: Okay, I tried them, Didnt like them and they messed with my push notifications :c
I also tried something I saw else where, that said to flash the chronic kernel and cap the cpu at something lower, so i have it locked at 1.2ghz...
But my battery still seems tr drain at the same speed D:
that battery stat app I cant figure out..

I'm not a noob, have done that. Had a full clean start.
Battery so far so good after a reboot.
I'm not talking about the GB battery drain, didn't have that on JVP as I said, noticed it with a freshly installed JVQ which is completely stock othere than hardcore's kernel 21.

check whats eating the battery?
Forgot to mention that the phone's temp went up to 48c
No clue what app is the culprit...
Have been using the phone consistently throughout the day and the had very good battery life so far, no more unexpected plunges.
I guess this is not related to the common GB drain bug described in various threads but just a glitch. Maybe a ghost process running loose using mucho CPU cycles keeping my phone nice and hot. Who knows! Case closed?

try install control freak, put your phone in deep sleep (idle) about 30 minutes, then run control freak, your phone normally should run in deep sleep (lowest cpu usage, state time 30 minutes). Something's wrong if it run above deep sleep (says about 100Mhz or 200Mhz cpu usage). Last, you can try re-flash the rom.
good luck!
Thanks, I'll try that one, need to figure out how control freak works. Will come in handy if this happens again but to date it's been running exemplary!

You could also try cpu spy... It's easier! Run it, reset it statistics and let the phone idle for a while (few minutes). Then run cpu spy again and check the state the battery was in (that should be deep sleep).
I am not new to battery drain, had it all the time on all 2.3.3 roms (and very rarely on JVP) but since i moved to JVQ i have never seen it again! I think in your case it must be an app running on the background consuming battery so you should also try a task killer just to see whats running!
PS: reset battery stats could also help!
Hi
Im also on JVQ since yesterday, the screen eats battery power though. From what ive read people suggest to let the battery discharge completely and then recharge for a few times to recalibrate it.
However when I left it in idle, with the screen off, the battery only lost 1% in 8 hours!
There must be something going on in the background on your SGS

I found that after using gps based apps with jvp they stayed active even after shutting them down causing serious drain. A reboot solved it.
I've also heard of it on jvq.

this app is basicly useless as it shows only time in cpu states not showing actual app that uses cpu, use OS Monitor
just configure it to show system processes aand also to sort them by cpu usage - this wil give you live view in interesting you stats in configurable refresh time
also for monitoring SystemPanelLite Task Manager - very good app that can be run in background and provide graph stats

there is no reason to use 3rd party task killers as linux have kinda task killer built in ...

only if gps icon is flashing in task bar - that indicates gps deamon working in background - no icon = no gps
no need to restart just enter app that uses gps and let it fix and then close the app
some apps have bug that does not kill gps deamon after closing app if there were no fix obtained during time spent in this app
hi guys, i'm a newbie when it comes to rooting and stuff
i reduced all my lcd settings (display is only at 10%, removed animations, etc), turned off unecessary apps (wifi, etc) and i'm using setCPU (so i could downgrade my cpu speed) after i learned how to root here with the ff settings:
cpu range 200-500 mHz, conservative.
my phone still seems to be draining fast. i'm not watching vids or playing games.
can anyone help me or give me tips which overclock actually worked for their S2?
i was hoping my battery would last about a day.
thanks!
Suggestions: restore your cpu settings to normal to establish a base line. Then download Osmonitor and see if any application is hogging your cpu. If not, then, in recovery wipe Dalvik cache (not anything else!).
You don't say what rom you are on but assuming you are not watching video files all day, you should get a full day easily.

Root has nothing to with battery life directly, but you can use T.B Pro to freeze some garbage apps always.
Besides you can't get any benefit from using SetCPU? LOL. Well I don't wanna a debate here, but that damn app will not do any useful thing other than mental satisfaction.
And you stop any app which is set as Automatic refresh in an specified interval, run as low as Widgets possible, Turn Off WiFi and Packet Data when not needed, and try to use Juice Defender which is doing a great job on mine.
Regards.
thank you for the replies
@tangiers: can osmonitor also freeze useless apps? or it just merely monitors your phone?

I9100 CPU is smart enough to change it's state when needed, you don't need an additional 2US$ software for that, when will people agree this fact? Anyway, why shall I care!
I'm also in the camp that thinks setcpu is a myth for saving battery. The cpu already scales up and down as needed stock. At idle the cpu sits at 250 mhz.
SetCPU
I found out that setCpu actually drained my battery faster, so just uninstall it.
See if it gets better.

Solved that problem by charging overnight.

There are many factors that's can cause battery drain, wakelocks, signal strength, method of data wifi or 3g, display etc etc
You could have a rouge app that is keeping your phone awake, download betterbatterystats and check for partial wakelocks.
Signal strength can be a factor, see your current signal strength and then change the modem to see if this reduces.
No need to tinker with setcpu, you can underclock if you wish but generally leaving it on stock is fine.
Most importantly enjoy the phone don't get to obsessive with trying to save every ounce of battery its a smartphone at the end of the day otherwise we'd be carrying Nokia 3310s with us, and remember you can always charge nightly!

Things that drain the battery :
Gps
Bluetooth
Wifi
Life wallpapers
Display brightness
Display time up setting
Try to configure them and see how much you can squeeze that .

No, and it's not recommended for this kernel. You probably have some application using the CPU. And keep in mind, that's over 3.5 days, so it's not too be worried about.

Not really sure what you are looking for.
Your tablet is configured differently (read: installed apps & their settings, never mind ROM & kernel differences) than the next person's, and those configuration changes alter the activity on the device and therefore the amount of power it consumes vs time. If what you observe is unacceptable to you, you need to drill down into the details to try and optimize things. But it really is impossible for anybody to guess (from a completely blind position on the other side of the internet) what might be the cause; if that is indeed anomalous consumption compared to some benchmark (pure stock, no market apps installed & a dormant gmail account?), the cause could be due to an unlimited number of different causes.
Perhaps you want to use that app BetterBatteryStats ($2.89) to find out about wake lock usage.
FWIW, my rooted stock 4.2.2 N7 grouper tab seems to discharge about 4% "overnight". Call that 10 hrs or so, so maybe I should expect 10% discharge per day while idle and unplugged. Your result seems to suggest 16%/day; but I've made no effort to dig in to things on my end of things - and besides: my results are irrelevant to yours as I no doubt use a different collection of apps than you and possibly different settings for the stock apps, too.
In my case the idle drain rate isn't a very compelling use case - I use the tablet every day, and when it is idle it is plugged into its' charger. If it should happen that it sat idle for a couple days, it's gonna be at 100% when I decide to use it.

Around 6 days of standby, and you want to improve that?
If you want to improve that, turn off your tablet. I'm sure u can spare those 60 sec two times a day you turn on your tablet to check mail.
Keep WiFi off when not in use and you should see a great improvement. I use stock kernel and over that same time period my battery is about the same with about 3 hours screen on time. I only turn WiFi on when I'm actually using it as anything I need synced goes to my phone.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Try better battery stats and see what keeps your cpu from going to sleep state..With this way you can examine what drains your battery my friend.,.
Try turning off auto-sync. (Data usage settings)
Never keep wifi on when sleep (you will lose notification to chat programs, social network app notifications when sleeping)
Use wifi powersafe mode.(Wifi advance settings)
Turn off/disable unneeded background update/apps/extensions/services and flash a rom with minimal google stock apps)
Of course, check for apps that are currently consuming power if any. (App settings, internal application setting)
M kernel also defaults cpu max to 1500Mhz ; stock is 1200. M kernel also sets gpu to 446Mhz ; stock 416Mhz. Altho this numbers might seem minimal, it can affect your battery life considerably shall there be background processing or even right after you start using your device again despite minimally in your case. (Use n download trickstermod)
These might or might not help you in getting more standby time, try and experiment =>
If you are also looking for more screen on time and if you know and accept the risks, you can try undervolting the cpu, gpu and ram in trickstermod, you can also use rootdim to go lower the screen backlight further, but do not go lower than value 4/255 as that is 'off'. thankfully you can set it to not go below 4 in the in app settings before you play with it. My configuration pushed to 8hrs+ screen time without any gaming =>
Do note that li-ion/poly batteries need to drain over time for batt health reasons. They generally last longer if kept in the 20-80% range. Room temp can also affevt battery drain significantly, cold < 26C room drains the batt real fast; and so does hot rooms >34c due to temp & conductivity relationships (batt needs to suply more due to less conductivity in the circuits when hot)
Past couple of days , I have been seeing alot of battery drain even when my phone isn't being used. My battery is draining too fast after upgrading to android 4.3. Even only on 2g there is 1% decrease in battery almost after every 3 minutes. But with screen off it will remain almost at 99% after even 12 hours or more. But when I start using the phone for something like even navigating through the settings the battery drops 1% every 3 minutes or even less. My handset is about a month old. I am from India and running the ML4 android 4.3 recently released by Samsung. There is no wakelock when the screen is asleep. The phone screen consumes between 60 to 90% of the battery or more. I factory reset it thrice since the update but with no effect. I am running the 4.3 update for about 3 weeks now. I also installed Greenify, battery doctor, juice defender etc to save battery but there is no improvement. I installed the same apps that I installed on the 4.1.2 firmware but the battery is draining quite faster in the 4.3 version. I also freeze almost all bloatware using Titanium backup and even uninstalled some like Google Books etc. but no use. I don't use wifi or wifi hotspot at all. I rarely use bluetooth. GPS, location, etc off. I even freeze Google Play store, Google play services and Google services framework. This is funny! You mean to say that the upgrade to android 4.3 has damaged my battery? The battery is not even 1 month old as I mentioned in the first post. The battery is very good on android 4.1.2...... As I mentioned in the first post, there is no battery drain when the screen is off. Even after 24 hours the battery is 99% from 100% with screen off. Why should I checked for wakelocks when the battery is fine on screen off? I did checked it to be sure but no wakelocks. The battery problem is when I use the phone, the battery is draining abnormally when the phone is used. Anyway thanks for your reply.

Yes, 4.3 upgrade downgraded my battery life about 20% when I am using my phone. On idle it is better about 10-20% also compared with 4.1.2. It is useless to do factory resets or other nonsense. Just it is as is.

Okey So Firstly I rule Out Few Assumptions Made By Some Members(No Offense):
1) As thadoukuki said battery Drains only while using the phone and not wen its idle that means its not a wakelock for sure.
2)Secondly as the handset n battery ofcourse, are just a month old i dont even assume it to be damaged(Trust Sammy)
3)Thirdly 1% / 3Mins is quite normal on extensive Usage but as you say its just while navigating around settings etc. den i assume its a bit high.
4) Now betterbatterystats is good to identify what consumes your battery but ive never been a fan of that actually.
SO according to me try to do some trial n error work .
Instead of Freezing apps through TB u can use Greenify Donate to greenify system apps and user apps as well. It Does same job as TB freeze but without that extra hassle.
Secondly Choose a kernel that you think is battery friendly for you like the one which gives you peace of mind(Oh Yeah Battery's Draining Slow!!)
for me i'd go for Boeffla or Googymax
Choose a battery friendly Governer for ur CPU(For me Boeffla kernel with Archi_ultra_power_save governer gives great results)
Check if CPU Touch boost is Enabled in Kernel Settings coz Touch Boost gave me good performance and responsiveness but even i had observed that battery used to drain faster with it.
Battery friendly Rom with few Tweaks by xda members is always better for me over Stock( ArchiDroid Is the Rom ive ever Used){Personal Opinion}
Ppl Say undervolting helps .....hmm maybe ive never Done it but as you are very cautious about battery you may try it (on your own Risk)
Lets see if that Helps
And Lastly i never Observed much Change in Battery drain pattern wen Coming from 4.1.2 to 4.3 so thats not really true.
