Is it possible to ODIN the phone back to the previous update so that you can root the device?
I just got my s4 less then a week ago and it was already at MF3

Unfortunately, you are stuck there until a fix is developed. There is no way back.
All the above are correct. Further: do not attempt to use Odin to return to MDB or MDL firmware. If it successfully flashes to the phone, it will cause a soft-brick (Emergency Mode) that's rather difficult to overcome right now.

bought my new sprint galaxy s4 tuesday after having a rooted s2 for years. im pulling my hair out trying to root it. i used CF autoroot and had root access till my first reboot. then it and SU went away. been trying to re-root ever since. i manage to get CWM recovery to install but root will not re-install no matter what i try. im so frustrated!!!!! everything looks like it installs every way i try it but its not there no errors. im on stock MF9 sprint variant. i wish rwilco had that one on his site!!!! thats :crying:how i kept my S2 up to date
Try flashing agat's kernel. It has auto-root. Version 0.4.0 works very well.
It checks for root at start up. If its not there it will auto install.

so cant really find anything that helps the answer I am looking for
Sprint updated my phone to mf9 than I rooted it
now I am thinking I want to go back to stock mf9 and clean the counter
I know I need to use triangle away and read that once you use it stop the reboot and load stock mf9 and it will make it look like everything is stock and wouldnt have tripped the counter
is this true?
I used odin to root it but other than the hotspot mod I dont really need it rooted
1) This goes in the Q&A forum.
2) There are tons of guides available on how to do this. Search is your friend.

got it done 2 hours later and no brick
Hi guys, I have a question regarding some roming stuff with the verizon version of the galaxy note 3. I am not new to roms by any means and I have been searching frantically to find one place with the complete answer im looking for. I made the early mistake of taking the OTA upgrade for KK, therefore I am currently running 4.4.2 with the NC4 build and NC4 baseband. Now while i have easily rooted my phone at this point with the towelroot. I also have had no problem getting the new 3.72 safestrap installed and running on my phone. My question now at this point is trying to figure out my next step with a new ROM I am trying install....I have been looking at all of my info to get the Hyperdrive ROM installed and I cant seem to find all the info I need in one location. Can I or can I not flash a new ROM to the NC4 baseband? I have seen some information where some people say I might be able to flash the NC2 kernal using ODIN and others say just trying to flash any ROM in general creates a black screen in which a battery pull needs to be done...yada yada.....? So in short, am I able to flash a ROM to the note 3 at this point or am I S.O.L? :crying:
You are not going to receive an answer because you posted a question in the "General" section. Hopefully a mod can move this thread to the "Q & A" section.
Thanks...
Gee thanks?

I am in the same exact predicament. Every rom I install just gives me a black screen. I'd love a solution to this.

Check out the OP by hsbadr he has done some great work and he lists very specific instructions on how to complete the flash of firmware/modem and rom without any problems
flashing note 3 custom roms etc to avoid "mandatory updates.
I'm in the same boat. I read that there's a possibility I should flash NC2 but I can't find a write up or sticky that says how. However I just received a notice that pointed me to some threads and answered my questions on terminology. ThankYou DavidFlory!! I will formally thank you in the thread. Until I can clear up the NC4/NC2 question I plan on keeping the rooted KitKat I've got. I'm scared Verizon/Google will attack again with a mandatory "update." Who's phone is this? What if I firewalled Verizon updater? Or froze it? The other day I did something that had columns of 3 pt text cascading on my screens until I used Samsung Kies to back me up flash the stock rom again. Root was retained. This was a worthwhile exercise as I had gotten carried away downloading android utilities.

Do you have the link?
OK so I found the link, followed every step I could which took a couple hours of research to get everything together. ...I flashed the jasmine rom, everything seemed to work fine until the last file in which Odin was successful, then I get a black screen that doesn't go away with any other means than a battery pull. Luckily I used the new 3.75 so I was able to do my rom under a different slot than stock...but maybe that's also the problem? So I'm back with a wiped phone and no custom rom which is irritating

Do you know where I can get the link for the JasmineROM 1.7.2 because 8 flashed 2.0 and it is devouring my battery.
Hello everyone,
I made the mistake a long time ago to get an OTA update, not thinking that they'd lock the bootloader and I'm currently on MF3. Last I checked, the most recent firmware update didn't have root access, so I chose not to try and update it. Truthfully, it's been a while since I've checked in here (since I'm more or less stuck with a locked bootloader anyway) and I'm trying to play catch up.
What's the best way to get my device up to date?
Could I use survival mode in SuperSU (and would it retain root)?
Do I have to do anything special to upgrade (get rid of root/any customizations that mark my FW as "custom" on startup)?
Any chance someone fixed the locked bootloader issue or is that likely permanent (I saw we can now ODIN back to stock but I'm assuming that won't unlock the bootloader)?
Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks, guys!
I don't know the exact answer to your update question. But, you can start here--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573080
I have not read it so don't recommend it w/o further study.
There are several threads in General and Q&A that talk about updating with MF3/MK2/NB1 etc. There is a SafeStrap thread in General and Q&A. You will need SafeStrap.
Bootloader will remain locked and you are post MDL build so recommend reading alot in those threads--
I think you have to do this incrementally to get to NB1/NC1. IE MF3 to MK2 etc
SafeStrap will be how you flash TW roms only and won't be able to flash custom recoveries/kernels. SafeStrap will have your recovery within it afaik.
I am MDL and that is why I can't give specifics. It can be complicated, so study up for awhile--:good:

Heh, I had a feeling that was probably going to be the case. That's what I get for being so out of touch on these things. I appreciate you taking the time to post here. I've used safestrap before but found the ROM's available for where I was at didn't really add much (and I'd have to reconfigure all my settings). If I'm moving to a new FW version, that might be a good place to start.
Thanks again for taking the time. If anyone else knows the best way to move forward (possibly removing my all custom aspects so I can just take any OTA's, assuming root is available for the most recent version), let me know.
Is there anything preventing root in the most recent FW version (I assume that's NC1)?
Thanks, everyone!
If you go to NC1 it is rootable with Towelroot---should be a thread on that too or within an NB1/NC1 thread.
You can probably search on that one.
Mod may move this to Q&A also--
Q&A for [ROM] 100% Stock I337_OC3 - 5.0.1(MDL)
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM] 100% Stock I337_OC3 - 5.0.1(MDL). If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
What if something goes wrong?
This looks very tempting, but if something goes wrong can I Odin back? FYI, I do have MDL Loki

After looking at how many views this post has received with no response, I might not have given enough info, so let me try again. I have an unlocked mdl bootloader. I use TWRP and hop back and forth from tw to AOSP roms. My question is if something goes wrong during install, and have to completely erase me devise and start over, is it with the mdl firmware or do I then have to flash 0c3. I love the thought of trying this fully updated system but would like to revert if necessary. Any response would be appreciated. Thank you for your support XDA community. Especially muniz_ri in this case for another shot at lollipop

After reading the thread thoroughly, I came to a conclusion the there were enough hints that tell me since the bootloader is still unlocked. MDL would be the way to go. Did it the install and Odin back using MDL: All is well. I know this could have been a dumb question, it's just taking precautions with my unlocked phone is one I do. God forbid if AT&T wins before I can afford a new unlocked phone. Thank you community for trying.
possible issue on encryption
On MDL, flashing via TWRP worked fine. When trying to encrypt the device, device reboots and then screen goes blank and remains blank. After a few hours, I pulled the battery; no problem recovering via Odin (and going back to stock with device and extsd encryption), but wondering if there's a workaround as I need encryption for work, but also the ANT+ support. (GPE fails to flash properly, so at this point I'd be up for anything reasonably stable at or above 4.3.) Any suggestions would be appreciated; thanks.
Update: Others have indicated the hitch might be TWRP, as stock recovery is "required" to encrypt the phone. (This doesn't seem to be the case with 4.2, where I've encrypted and decrypted the phone several times with TWRP.) That said, flashing this ROM and then flashing the recovery tar from the stock MDL firmware via Odin doesn't seem to do the trick either. If I manage to get a copy of the recovery image from OC3 I might give that a go but for now am at a loss.
I'm on custom rom 4.4.2 ucufni1 safestrap. Can i flash lollipop rom without lost wifi and mobile network ? Do i have to install ni1 modules and modem after ?
