Nexus 7 Screen touching it self - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I bought a nexus 7 4 months ago, but I'm having a strange problem! Sometimes, after some minutes of use, the screen starts touching itself...
The most strange thing is, if I restart the device, everything goes back to the normal
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Seriously though, maybe you need to RMA it if the touch screen is going bad

Try flashing a different kernel as that is what bridges hardware and software.

I had this same problem. I installed CM 10.1 and have not had that problem since.

Humm... But I have fear of flashing other ROM/Kernel because I will lose the warranty.
The strange thing is, if it's a screen defect why after a restart everything works perfectly? Or even after pressing the power button to make him sleep and then awake.

Just download something like the nexus 7 toolkit. You can find here on xda. With that you can flash back to stock and lock the boot loader and its as if you never voided the warranty. I've done it.

Hum, ok! Thanks.
You have flashed only the ROM or you flashed a kernel too?

sounds naughty!! "touching itself"
anyways, there might be water below the protective glass, is there anything like bubbles visible?

No.

the product MIGHT be faulty, a reboot cuts the power to the screen therefore stopping a potential short circuit that cause the activation of the touch sensors (the touch screen detects static electricity).

It normally isn't a hardware issue at all. What climate do you live in? Humidity and heat will cause ghost touches. Happens to me when I am outside on a humid day

Ummm I believe just the ROM but might have done kernel too... I'm no expert I just followed the instructions in the nexus 7 toolkit lol

calibrate screen sensitivity?

Hello everyone,
Curious if anyone is having the same issue as me? I have tried multiple roms, stock, with and without kernels.
I am having some touch issues. Either I have to press harder then normal at times or multiple times for my press to register. Its getting quite annoying. Not sure if this is a defect or if i can modify something within the system files to make the screen more sensitive or if there is even a way to re-calibrate my sensors/screen?
Thank you in advance,
DFL
Did you figure out what was wrong? ... It just started to do the same with me... Even to right this was a pain in the a$$...

Well, I've rebooted in recovery mode, wiped the cache and it's back to normal now... I know it's just a temp solution, but you might wanna give it a try

hmmm... wiping cache fixed? i bet systemcleanup active would help then. I will take your advice and try out that app systemcleanup on my tab. I use on my phone Nexus S just didnt think the N7 would need it due to its specs.
Thanks mate, ill give it a go.

Has anyone decided if this is a hardware or software problem? I've started having the same issue. Turning off the screen sometimes fixes it for me but not always. A reboot always fixes it.
Like just now... I was playing Zenonia 2 and in the middle of a battle I suddenly couldn't get the touchscreen to respond. I hit power to lock the device and immediately tried to turn it back on with power again... but I couldn't even get the unlock screen to work. I set it down for about 30 seconds and when I tried again it was fine. I pulled the game back to the top and it worked fine.
When this happens the "soft" buttons (back, home, etc) always seem to work just fine, so I'm inclined to say it's really a software problem.
Running stock + root.
My thought is that it has to be a hardware issue, or if everyone with the issues is rooted than it could be from the root. My device has fantastic response however I am not rooted.

I would think hardware as well, but the home and back buttons always work and they use the same touch surface...
I got the same thing here and rebooting appears to fix it. Sometimes it is so bad that I cannot move icons from one screen to another.
Did you guys try flashing stock 4.1.1 using fastboot or the toolkit? If that does fix it then its probably hardware problem.

I have the same issue and mine isn't rooted yet so I don't think it is an issue with that. A wipe of the device doesn't help but a reboot usually does. This is my second N7 as the first was a warranty replacement for the headphone jack issue. The first never had the issue so I think it is an issue that should be addressed. I am outside my 14 days so I might have to go through Asus now.
---------- Post added at 01:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:50 PM ----------
For what it is worth, I just called Google and they are going to send me a new one. The lady that assisted me stated that she has had a few complaints with this issue and that they just replace it. N7 #3 should be on the way in a couple days. For some reason she said that the device wasn't set up properly in my profile so it will add a couple days to the process because of the long weekend.
Not a big deal. I have lived with it for a while now. At least they appear to be taking care of it and I wasn't transferred to Asus. At least yet.

I've never noticed my screen "flicker"; does it flash off and on again or what?
Yeah, please clarify what a flicker is... if it only happened a couple times then it probably is related to the apps or maybe a couple things going on at once.
If it is not a constant, consistent problem and had only happened a couple times then perhaps it isn't a problem at all.

I get the flicker but it's definitely app related.
When using Google music app and going to lock screen, the " widget" sort of flickers and stretches throughout the lock screen

My screen flickered for a good 5 minutes and even a reboot didn't fix it. I think it's hardware related because if it was software a reboot would have fixed it. Could have been a driver glitch too but I'm pretty sure a reboot would've fixed it. My flickered a lot though saw a bunch of vertical lines and discoloration. Idk if that's what you're talking about.

I use Google Music a lot and I've never seen that. I just tried to replicate it and other than the usual CRT off animation I didn't see anything that I would construe as a flicker or flash.
If you hold your device in front of you with the screen on and look beyond it (i.e. over it's shoulder per say) you can see flicker. Works best in a dark room.
No big deal, but it's there.
I think its a big deal ...you spend your money for a working product..these issues need to be addressed..I thought I could trust LG again but dont think I can anymore

This sounds like a refresh rate issue, which would be hardware, yes?

Sounds like one of those magic eye pictures. If you squint at your screen while holding it at a 45-degree angle in a dark room with brightness turned all the way down and jog in place...
I'm not sure how to replicate it based on what you said, but I still don't see any screen flicker.

Mine started flickering like mad today for the first time. I rebooted, but that didn't fix it. I started up a benchmark app and the flickering stopped after the graphics benchmarks ran. I had to RMA my first Nexus 7 with screen issues too, so I'm hoping this is just a software issue
I don't have this issue at all.

Anyone else sometimes experience touches not registering on the touchscreen?

Randomly it seems, when I tap on the touchscreen on my new N7 2013, nothing happens, and I have to repeat the process several times before my touches are registered.
Does anyone else have this problem?

See my thread titled " Another touch issue, with reproducible steps".
Go into developer options and enable "Show touches" and "Pointer location"
If you see your touches registering but the app isn't responding, it is probably a problem with the app. If you see random stuff on the screen, probably a problem with the digitizer or digitizer in combination with the driver/software in this release.
Ive experienced this a few times and it seems to be a software /hardware interface issue with particular custom rom builds ive installed. I know the touchscreen hardware itself was fine when I forced reboot into recovery and the touchscreen worked as normal in custom recovery.

I wouldn't. If you had a Verizon Galaxy Nexus when it came out, you'll remember that it had the same issue with certain points on the screen (lower right hand corner) when using multi-touch applications. The entire screen would either stop seeing input or start going erratic and creating faulty inputs that weren't happening. It isn't a hardware issue, proven by some users experiencing it and some not. The only time I've experienced it is in the Netflix application while trying to choose a show to watch. I re-boot the application and viola, no more issue. Some in this thread even are stating that they only see the problem sometimes after getting the 4.3 update.
In short, it's software and not hardware.
Same issue when not touching with both hands somehow (like if the tablet is flat on a table).

Haven't had a problem with mine. I just got it today, and it's worked like a charm. I bought mine from Gamestop if that helps any.

Bottom screen not responding well

So I have this weird issue. The very bottom of my screen does not respond well! At first I thought it was a bug with the navigation bar, tried several roms and tried PIE controls until I figured that there is something wrong. I have the navbar now set at 48 dpi and I have to press at middle of it to work, where the very bottom is dead. I activated 360 rotation so that my statusbar now is at the bottom of the screen instead of navbar and it does not respond at all! Anyone can explain ?

I have Tried like lots of different roms with clean fresh installation and the problem is still there ! I think its a hardware problem. For ezample right now if I set my navbar to 32 dpi it wont respond at all because the bottom of my screen have lost the touch sensitivity. I have droppes my phone several times, could that be it ? I cant really remember when I exactly started noticing the issue...but just few days ago...I have tried PIE and same **** :s I have to set the trigger area to max for it to respond...and yes im talking about experiments after a clean install before installing ANY third party app

Think Im gonna give no damn about it and of course buy the nexus 5, which I would have done either way..but im surprised how can a touchscreen lose a part of its sensitivity somewhere on the screen ?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
If you look closely at your screen at an angle with the screen off you will be able to see the digitizer matrix that is fused to the screen.
It is a series of squares.
Each of them squares has 3 horizontal lines and one vertical.
Behind the bezel there will be the circuitry that connects every horizontal and vertical line
If say for instance after one of your phone drops it has damaged one of the connectors at the side, you will lose the entire row of touch detection. Which is probably what has happened

Alex is right i had this happen to my moto defy. I'd say get it done under warrnty no matter if youre keeping or selling. Improve your resale value and protect you from having the entire digitizer die on you

my screen is flipping out

yeah this happened after i put a new lcd and digitizer in it. could this possibly be because i bought a 2013 screen model and put it in a 2012 one or are they the same. ive checked all connections completely and there fine.

OK if the screen is consistently OK on some apps and not on others it must be a software problem. Try to get into recovery and do factory reset if that doesn't fix it then flash a new factory image. There are instructions in the stickies

That is a possibly how much do you know about the person who sold you it? I would try to reproduce the fault open one of the apps that doesn't flicker and shake the tablet about. If he has damaged the connection on the motherboard then that will make it flicker. Recovered motherboards for the n7 are not expensive the other possibility is a faulty LCD. I bought a mb for £30 and I think in USA they are even cheaper about $20

@gears177 OK well that rules out him ripping you off at least my guess would be the connection between the ribbon and the motherboard try contact cleaner on it if that doesn't work then a new motherboard is the next step. Perhaps it was damaged when the screen was broken. It could also be damage to the GPU but that's unlikely as the motherboard is well designed to withstand or absorb shocks
