I have been having substantial problems with my Spring GS4 connecting to mobile networks. I am in an area where I should have LTE, but most of the time my device constantly switches between 1xRTT and eHRPD (and NO network connection). Occasionally it will connect to the mobile networks 3G on 1X and 4G on LTE, but that usually requires restarting the device/ turning on/off airplane mode.
Any thoughts that you have would be greatly appreciated. I am happy to supply additional information upon request.
When you say 'should' have lte, do you mean Sprint had officially announced lte live in your area?
If not it's likely your issues are associated with lte deployment and are fairly common until upgrades are finished.
If so, if try prl and profile update

My area has an active LTE tower. I sometimes do connect, but soon after it goes back to no data.
I have tried a prl and profile update, although I will try again right now
Update: I did a prl update, but the profile didn't work (my device won't stay connected long enough for it to finish. Multiple attempts)

So what do you mean there is 1 tower in your area that has LTE? If that's the case it will be a while to get a consistent stable LTE connection because they would be doing NV upgrades in your area. And how far are you exactly from the tower that has LTE. It is probably just out of range or can't penetrate the walls or something. You should probably just go to s4gru.com and find your market thread and read. Also are you on a custom ROM. We can't really help without more info.

try a ##72786# reset(may need msl/spc) to reprovision your data profiles. I'd suggest being on wifi before you do this so that the profiles update over wifi after the reset. Do your PRL update over wifi as well.
It's possible that Sprint is in an upgrade phase which is causing issues. Here in philly we have many LTE towers yet my connection with eHRPD/LTE SUCKS!!! I know what bad is... this is worse than that.
You can get around this(YMMV) by setting the mobile network to cdma(cdma/evdo) instead of cdma/lte(cdma/evdo/lte) in settings. Doing this will make your phone ignore eHRPD/LTE and just stay on EVDO.
I read that ##72786# really screws up this phone on another thread
OP If you have NV upgrades going on in your area, give up on depending on your phone. I had to switch to Google voice just so I could find out if someone tried calling me because I would miss everyone's calls in addition to having almost no Internet.

Thanks for the replies u guys. Im guessing that in my case its an upgrade phase. I still get connections all over but it switches back to EVDO all the time. Ill keep u guys updated.

2 Devices. One seems to connect to LTE better than the other. Same Place, Same Tower. One is stuck on 3g (or worse) as you detail above while the other is solid 4g. Data on/off cycle doesn't help. I was using RF Signal tracker to see tower, and network information. I have also had many dropped calls, as well as Bluetooth troubles.

Downgraded to calkulins v1.7 since i was having issues with 1.8 and now i am not getting evdo connectivity at all. My phone only connects to 1x. Ive tried restoring my settings when i do ##3282# edit data profile and evdo. Im not sure what else to do. Ive flashed 3 different roms and nothing helped. What else can i do?

Go to settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, mode of operation, and chose evdo only. This fixed my problem, hopefully it will help you.
I have no option to select mode of operation. I am unrooted now and back on bone stock ROM and still have this issue so I am not sure what is wrong. I am currently chatting with sprint to reset anything on their end. However, it still only connects to 1XRTT
try flashing 1.8 back and change the operation mode to hybrid. double check with ##3282# to also make sure the evdo setting is on automatic.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
i just fixed this problem myself. go back to calkulin's evio 1.8, and change setting to hybrid. to see if it works, type ##3282# into dialer and choose view mode. go to evdo settings, and make sure its set on automatic. if not, then:
retrieve your msl (free app in market msl reader) and type the same code in, but choose edit mode. type in your msl, and go to evdo settings, and change to auto.
Ahhhh! I don't have this option :/

Changing to EVDO only helps with 1X, but I found out that the setting to EVDO only will not allow incoming text or calls. I had to put it back to Automatic.
I've tried everything everyone has posted so far. Changing to EVDO only and automatic and all that stuff. I took it into the Sprint store today and they tried telling me it was on 3G since the icon was showing that. I told them the evo icon never changes to 1x even when connected to 1x. She still didn't believe me. So I downloaded a few apps that showed my phone only connected to 1x and she downloaded the same app and it showed hers connected to EVDO. She said she couldn't trust the app and then she compared my phone internet load times to hers and mine was actually faster so she still wasn't convinced. I explained that the 3G is on a higher frequency than 1x and being indoors she may have a poor signal compared to mine. Also I told her that everyone in our area is probably connected to EVDO, thus slowing it down, versus just me on 1x, so I had better speeds. She said that is very true, so she ordered me a new Evo that should be here in a few days.

but you will be constantly roaming
try it out and let me know if it works for you.
##775#
search for 00001.prl and change it.
commit changes and it will restart
give it about 10 mins to get connected right and do a speed test.
i was getting only 15-20 kbps using the latest sprint prl.
i changed to this modified prl and im getting 1700-2200 kbps
i think sprints prl's are messed up..
What test can o perform to prove that its versions network I am using after this hack? An iplookup says I'm still connected to sprint.

I'm having the exact same problems. Tried damn near everything at this point. No luck. If you find a solution, please post it.
Anyone noticed on gs2 it switches to 3g until H is needed for data. If I'm in an H area it doesn't stay in that mode all the time.
I know H drains battery more so on the gs1 could the same functioning be transported. In theory giving better battery life?
Just my input and maybe a tribute to my old faithful gs1 and the great community

Same for my sgs2 (I am on orange)
At first I just thought signal was not so great in area I live but then the H pops back when I start downloading and using net, I can see why they have made it this way but I am also a little unsure as to how much this helps, the swapping from 3g to h then 3g to h and so on and if this itself does not either slow our use as we wait for it to swap back to h and if saves energy or uses more? (like in a car changing gears more often uses more fuel)

Yes. There are quite a few people with 3G and HSDPA issues:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074396
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073958
Yours may not be an actual problem if your getting decent speeds but mine is failing to stay on HSDPA when downloading and getting very poor results (64kbps) in an area which I normally get around 2000kbps.
I've spoken to Samsung but they have yet to respond with a resolution.
Dont know if its an issue for me as it swaps back to 3g once its got all it needs (page loaded) its stays 3g until i click on next page or it needs it then jumps to H again.

Same here - no problem with speeds or whatever, but once it's finished it changes back to 3g. I'm on vodafone.

Oh and my battery lasts way longer on my sgs2

I noticed this too but I have yet to properly test it to see if that's actually what it's doing....
my nexus one also stays on H always and never switches back and forth for the data transfer.
however i thin kit is network dependent sometimes, because when i traveled to a different city a few weeks ago suddenly it would switch between 3G and H anytime data transferred. as soon as i drove about 15 minutes north out of that city, it returned to constant H and back to normal.
so i dont know exactly how or why this is caused. i'd prefer to jsut stay on H and not change back and forth.
Depending on Carrier actively terminating HSPA when data transfer finished?
Is the same on my HD 2 .

I chose Orange via CPW. I received my SGS 2 yesterday. Such a stunning phone but I'm returning it as I can't connect via HSPDA. My two O2 Galaxy S's sitting on same desk connect at H without issue. If I take out the Orange contract SIM and replace it with one of my O2, the SGS 2 connects at HSPDA immediately. Definitely an Orange issue.
Hopefully I can take advantage of CPW policy to find a network that works for me. Would be great if I could keep the handset (put protective screen on it and time spent customising handset) and pop in another SIM.
Anyone tried changing the preferred network type? On my Nexus One the default (which I never changed) was WCDMA preferred, on the GSII it's GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). A brief bit of research online suggests that this does affect how the phone switches between available network types.

thank you for useful info
I get this issue when I have GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode) selected.
Speed tests are rather slow even when it switches to H. When I select WCDMA only I get great speeds (3Mb+). Still switches between 3G and H though.
My issue is that I've never been able to connect to H+ in central London on Three. Not sure if it's my phone or the network.
This is actually how the umts/hspa technology works. HSPA as a technology is only for data, so it's used only then. Carriers drops the connection back to umts if data is not used.
This is also related to the FastDormancy bug discussed here. So it might also relate to why this phone does it so often or fast.
I've tested two usb-modems and another phone in my location and they all do exactly the same thing what galaxy s ii.
My network provider always drops the connection to 3G if data is not used, it can't be forced. A way around it is to keep a small download going.
E.g. if I use a usb-modem on my laptop and want to keep it in HSPA (for some reason...), I just put wget with 1kt/s download in the background.
The networks capacity is not limitless, so older technologies is used instead.
Hope this clarifies things.

I'm in U.S. on AT&T, with an HTC Inspire "4G" and SGS2. The Inspire stays on H+ at all times, idle or active. The SGS2 does bump up to H+ on demand it seems. BTW, The SGS Tools app with the dialer codes still works fine on this device. I've been messing with network bands since I got the phone.
Just to add. I'm using the same vodafone sim card from my old sgs and it always stayed on H unless signal was 3g only area.

Hello, I have no problem receiving an LTE signal on BCE (Canada) through the Phone Info Menu. I can select any of the preferred network types including LTE, LTE/GSM, CDMA, LTE/GSM/CDMA but it won't stay. Every day I have to go back into the menu and it reverts back to the first selection "WCDMA".
Does anyone know how to force this so it stays on LTE/GSM/CDMA. So it will stay on the LTE-enabled network unless there is a loss of signal and it reverts back to HSPA? It does this automatically when "LTE/GSM/CDMA is selected, but again reverts to CDMA within a day usually.
I did some searches here, but 99% of what comes up is just people asking how to enable LTE or if their network gets it?
Any ideas? Maybe some sort of macro thing.
Regards.

So, my Nexus 4 shipped today, and it'll be in my grubby little hands by tomorrow evening. I, unfortunately, can't activate it until March, as I have to wait for my Verizon contract to end, but I keep seeing this LTE stuff, with no real explanation. I do know that the Nexus 4 has an inactive LTE radio in it, but what's the use of activating it, if T-Mobile doesn't have LTE? Is this only for the AT&T users?

There are other threads dealing with who can access LTE in the USA. I am in Canada and on Bell.
I'm in Canada, using Fido. I activate the LTE on my Nexus 4. It works fine, but I'm not able to share internet with wifi hotspot.
I have Android 4.2.1 (latest OTA from Google).
There is a bug with this version or it's only because I activate LTE manually ?

For everyone still searching for a solution to this problem, this worked for me. Go to phone information and turn your radio off. Then switch to LTE/GSM/CDMA then power down, DO NOT TURN YOUR RADIO BACK ON. Now remove your Sim card, put it back in, reboot and you should be good to go. DO NOT HGO BACK INTO PHONE INFORMATION OR ELSE IT WILL NOT STAY
If it still isn't connecting try fiddling around with your APN settings.

I don't think that's possible, as different areas are bound to have weak, strong or very strong signals.

Finally
with the recent update on my s4, this is now not compatible to my device... any other alternative app? i used to use this a lot. now i miss my lte connection when im in the office.
Firstly, does your network support VoLTE?
VoLTE is not currently supported by any network in the UK, this means you cannot make or receive calls when on 4G.
What happens is when you make or receive a call, your mobile network forces you down onto 3G or even 2G.
Therefore if you find a way to force your phone onto 4G and your network didn't support VoLTE, you will never be able to make or receive calls.
Did it!!
"Advanced Signal Status" from the GooglePlay worked for me on latest 5.0.1 i9515 phone. It was a long time since i wanted to set it work like i needed.. Now my networks are in wcdma/lte only mode, working fine. Recommend!
P.S. Root/Superuser needed
Try adding this line to your features.xml in the csc folder:
<CscFeature_Setting_CustNetworkSelMenu4>LTEONLY</CscFeature_Setting_CustNetworkSelMenu4>

I believe you can set the phone to only receive CDMA and LTE in the Mobile Networks option of the settings (in the more section)
You can also set it to receive only GSM, GSM and CDMA, or all available networks.

You on stock or a custom ROM?
That sounds like a radio problem tbh.
You can't use LTE only - in fact, LTE requires a CDMA or GSM base for stuff like phone calls so it always has to be connected to 3g or 1x.
There's a possibility that switching airplane mode or pulling your SIM out would force LTE to reconnect
Solution: Yes you can force lte
I'm not a engineer or a radio analyst but I do believe what the previous post says about LTE needing CDMA is completely wrong - it certainly doesn't need to have CDMA or any other radio band to effect LTE. That being said, LTE is BASED off of 3G CDMA. But again, I may be inaccurate, however I think the "proof is in the pudding"......HOW TO FORCE TO LTE (ONLY)
1. Open up your phones dial pad
2. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (An app with the title "Testing" should open automatically... but not 100% sure. If it doesn't open auto hit dial....
3. Select "Phone Information"
4. Scroll down the phone information page, you should see the first button that says "Turn off radio"..... We want to focus on the item right above that. By default it's set to "LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
5. Click on that which should provide a drop down list, with specific radio bands.
6. In your case select "LTE Only"
7. Profit!
FYI: IN "LTE Only" mode you will not be able to make or receive calls - this is good for DATA only. You can manually reset back to default mode but regardless every time your phone reboots it will go back to default.
Well yeah that's true. Not really sure if vzw will let you connect though. But yeah no calls or text
