Nexus 4 getting warm - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please dont get mad at me for opening this thread and if there is a thread similar to my problem, please attach the link, as xda search facility is not that flexible and yes i have tried google as well but couldn't find something similar to what i am about to write.
So my phone started getting warm for no reason, i am using it the same way i used to before it started getting warm.
Hangouts, whatsapp, xda, few calls and texts and no game no battery consuming app no nothing.
But yeah i am a flashaholic person, but its been three months i think and ive been continuously flashing roms without any problem, like 5 roms in a week.
It never happened before but only after i flashed a rom with aroma settings in it.
"I AM NOT BLAMING OR I AM NOT SAYING IT WITH CERTAIN SURETY THAT AROMA IS THE REASON" but thats the only different thing I've tried and it started happening.
Before it used to stay cool while on charging also but not now.
It gets warm from the top, let say top back half part.
I've read it in another forum that it is related to WiFi, as the wifi chip is planted in the top part of the phone.
But my question is why NOW?
Like i am using my phone exactly the same as i used to.
If anyone need more details, please feel free to ask but please help me sorting out this issue, because I'm completely in love with me"nexus 4", (thinking of dumping my gf "joking") that i want it run smooth without any issue. *sniff*
Edit: xda mobile search facility i meant.

Have you changed cases recently? (just a shot in the dark)
It is not uncommon for the Nexus 4 to get warm under heavy usage. I would take a look and see if maybe there is an app running in the background that could be causing this as well.

Phones getting warm are completely normal. It's the nature of phones with big IPS/LED screens that they will require a large battery to go with it. And batteries generate heat, plain and simple. And if you're in a country with a warm climate, it adds to the phone's heat too. If you're worried, mine also heats up at the top part of the back, and it's still running beautifully.
I would suggest installing Trickster MOD to take note of the temperatures. The throttle temperatures are in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43513764&postcount=2
Bottomline: your phone heats up because you're using. That doesn't mean something is wrong (unless you're really going over the acceptable limits ).

Help!

Hey guys,
I have had my Nexus for a little more than a week. I am loving this thing. I don't know how I have survived without it. I came from the darkside(BlackBerry).
Anyway, I have a few questions I need help with. I have searched and looked around and tried various things which I will detail in whats to come.
ROM: CyanogenMod 5.0.6
Recovery: RA-nexus-v1.7.0-cyan
Radio: 4.04.00.03_2
Kernal: 2.6.33.3 Pershoot OC - UV
Build: EPE54B
Theme: Nextheme
First:
I have been having issues sending/receiving MMS. I have my APN settings setup for TMO USA. I searched and found a few different ways to configure it, but all of them were to no avail. I use Handcent for messaging. Sometimes I can receive MMS and send them just fine, and other times I can not. Sometimes when I receive them it automatically downloads them like one would think it should, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes when I click the "download" option it downloads and works, and sometimes it simply does not. I have called TMO and HTC and never really seemed to get anywhere with it other than following their directions. Is their anything else anyone might be able to think of, other than wiping and starting from scratch?
The other things on this first subject is a little less of a mess, and not such a deal. How can I send a MMS with a picture AND audio. I could do it on my Blackberry, and I can even receive MMS with Pic/Aud on my Nexus, but how the heck do I send a MMS with both at the same time? I am sure their has to be a way and im just not using my head here...
Second thing:
I'll start by saying...Battery life. LOL
I have been playing with different kernals thinking maybe sooner or later i'll strike the gold one and find one that I want to keep. My phone is getting like 7ish hours of light to moderate usage before it starts dropping below 10% or so. I don't know if it is just me, but I really expected a LITTLE more. I have the OC and UV kernal as described above. I have Setcpu setup to adjust cpu speed according to battery life. I tried the 'ole go into recovery and clear cache's and battery stats and charge for 30min or so after the "green light" on phone trick, and that seemed to help me get maybe 30min or so more of use, but nothing drastic. I also found a thread on here about battery life and playing with the *#*#4636#*#* and the different network options trick. That has not really seemed to do anything either. Does anyone know of any way to isolate this issue? I use Advanced Task Killer, and have it setup to kill the crap every hour. I have noticed when I turn phone on ATK says I have ~200ish mb free of memory, and when phone starts to die I have around 120mb free.
While I am on battery life issue, the next issue I have possibly ties in with it. I am using HelixLauncher2 and think it may be the culprit...After 12ish hours or so the phone gets super slow, and unresponsive and the HL2 FC's some. The phone is practically unusable until I do a reboot. Would this have something to do with the Kernal? Any suggestions here guys?
Well if you managed to read this whole fiasco, thanks!
If their is any tips or advice you guys could give, it would be very much so appreciated. I love the phone to death, but the battery life, MMS issue/s, and slow/unresponsive issues have to go be straightened out and it will the best phone in the world(to/for me) lol. I think most/part of my issues are the kernal and the HL2, but I really am not sure. I am new the the Android scene, but am trying to learn quick, fast and in a hurry. I rooted the 2nd day I had the device haha
Thanks again,
Blaine
Any takers? Please? Is really appreciate it.
I don't experience any of the issues you do, where are you located? Is there another T mobile Sim you can use to see if there is something wrong on the end? Do you think there is a possible hardware fault? Had you used the phone stock for a month or so before you rooted?
Its sad to say, but from what you're explaining, as I have the same setup as you, it could definitely be a hardware issue
All things considered based on your post were I you I would reflash first. I would consider using the kangorama rom which already has all the core stuff you listed built in and working correctly. Wipe everything before hand.
Once I did that I would only add the crucial apps and see if anything is whacked. Chances are the core apps like handcent that people commonly use and you will be using frequently should be fine. Only after I knew that was ok would I start adding in the rest of the apps. I would add them in a few at a time and keep an eye on the battery. Consider ditching atk and trying system panel. It gives you a lot more tools for finding offenders. This is really the use of app killers, dealing with runaway apps. They can also be handy for stopping bat killers that are not runaways. By this I mean an app like trapster. It needs to run in the background to work properly but uses a lot of battery. In order to kill it when I am done with it I have to switch to it and drill a menu. With system panel I just hit one button to close all running apps that I have not exluded. At any rate killing apps willy nilly is not going to solve your problem and works against the memory management scheme which is pretty solid.
Once you have a solid core to work with you can start looking at the little things like how often you are getting weather updates, stock updates, email, etc. A high frequency with these things can use a fair bit of extra battery and if you dont need email (for instance) every 15 minutes you lose nothing when one hour is adequate. There are tons of battery threads with tips and this is only one example.

Regarding your battery life, assuming you glanced over the sticky guide in this forum, you should kinda expect about 8 hours of bat. life with moderate use. This thing has a badass snapdragon + 3D chip + awesome screen.. Battery tech hasn't really been keeping up with the consumption and power of PDAs.
It's not N1's fault, google mentioned on the conference that about 8-10 hour day is what you get from these devices.
The times of week-lasting batteries are gone with black-n-white brick nokias.
Thanks for all the help guys. I have probably 120ish applications installed. I only had/used the N1 for 2 days before rooting and "going all out" lol. There are many things for me to try. Is System Panel an application, or built into settings? I suppose the 8-10 hours thing is probably abour right, it is a pretty badass phone. LOL I guess I am going to have to consider a extra battery/cradle though. I wonder if they make something for auto that is a cradle/spare battery charger..hmm lol I am just so befuddled, I know with time one of two things will happen though. One being I just get used to it and deal with it, or two software/os/ firmware and kernals just keep getting better until issues really are oleviated haha.
Thanks again guys! If anyone else has anything they would like to throw out, I am still all ears. I am new to this forum, but appears to be a great bunch of guys here, so I hope to become a active useful contributing member to the forum!
Thanks!
The super horrible battery life is probably you playing with your new toy a crap ton once you stop playing with all the candy and pick out the gems it will improve
Yeah, I am sure their is probably a ton of crap I will probably end up getting rid of..It all seem so intriguing coming from a Blackberry that you can't do anything terribly exciting with, to this which has an application for ANYTHING and everything you could ever want to do..I am blown away by the amount/kind of applications for this thing. WiTether being one of them..My mind is blown by the customizationability(is that a word?) of this thing. I love Blackberrys, and sorry but NOTHING touches their email handling, but this thing...Its just so dang much fun to own!
Really though, the one thing no one touched on was my question about MMS and how to send one with a picture & ring tone attached. If I could do it on my DingleBerry, there has to be a way on N1. How does one do that with the trusty 'ole N1 here?
Thanks!

HTC Incredible feels like [W]ildfire

Is anybody else's phone getting really hot? If I have my shell case on the back them I dont notice it, but if I'm using the phone without the case then I cM tell its getting really hot on both sides.
Is this a standard issue? I had heard of the N1 getting hot.

I had the same issue when using Live wallpapers. I disabled almost every feature of the phone to maximize battery life including live wallpaper. the phone runs fine now its cold to the touch.
Sometimes the phone will get hot when using GPS or when you are downloading something for awhile or using an App thats a little more intense then normal. If yours is getting hot and staying hot with normal phone use when its just idling, I would take it back.
The most likely cause of this would be if you regularly are in low signal areas, the radio needs more power to boost signal to reach the tower, thus uses battery more quickly, and also generates much more heat than it would in high signal areas. Since the phone cant be overclocked yet, that is really the only reason I can think of that you would have a drastically higher temperature than normal. Coming from an OCd wifi tether droid, I havent found an occasion where the incredible feels anything other than pleasantly cool to the touch, but I guess other peoples experiences may vary. If its the amount of heat you might get from holding it in your hands for a while, I wouldnt worry about it too much. If its hot enough for long periods of time that youre really concerned about, might have a bad radio on your phone, good luck getting an exchange atm >.>
Thanks for all the input.
Im not in an area with low signal. I'm in Little Rock, AR - our arena across the river downtown named "Verizon Arena" for crying loud. Lol. ... It gets hot when I talk on it though, and its not just body heat from my hand. Both the back & front heat up, and sometimes when its charging it gets hot. It doesn't take long, and as a matter of fact its getting warmer as I type this from my phone.
It may be something up with the radio, as was suggested. Yesterday I was trying to call out & when the person on the other line answered they couldn't hear me but could hear them. I called a couple of different people a couple of different times just to test it out & it was messed up every time. I powered the phone off, cut it back on, and it works fine now. Could these be related issues or what? When that was happening I also heard this very high pitched noise coming out of where my ear goes. It has gone away as well, but I'm trying to provide as much detail as possible in case others can help or suggest issues. I really don't want to have to take the phone back - especially since they're fresh out of stock.
Interesting you mentioned the high pitched noise while on phone calls...
I had the exact same problem, whenever I tried to make or recieve calls was getting a high pitched noise from the speaker, i could hear the other party, but they could not hear me. turning phone off and back on fixed the issue. Ive also noticed the #1 app in my battery usage is Cell Standby at 43%. So my radio is using almost half my battery. I live and work around Washington D.C. area so coverage and signal loss should not be an issue. But "Time without a signal is 26%" I'm thinking theres an issue with the radio on the Incredible also... wish there were more confirmed reports.

NewB question here, but I've seen several mentions of how much battery power an app is taking up. How do you find that out...?
Im using a widget called battery left, I click that to bring up the usage since last unplugged. The longer way is under settings -> about -> battery -> battery use.
I just downloaded & installed the LauncherPro app. I'm running it now & this is the point where my phone is getting really hot. I don't know if the launchers the reason why or not. A) Could running another launcher like LauncherPro be the reason? B) Should I uninstall & just use Sense UI?

Could be, try finding out if your cpu is running near max a lot, seePU is a good app to get cpu load at a glance. If its constantly near max load with the launcher running its likely the cause.
I don't know how to find CPU temp., but to find battery temp., go to Phone and type in *#*#4636#*#*
Go to Battery information and it's listed in *C.
Maybe that will help....somehow.
[W]ildfire
Hey my phone is doing the same thing so far it reads display is 75% ande everything else is under 10%. my battery temp on set cpu it says its 119 degrees that is the highest i have seen it usually gets between 105 and 110. Id really if someone could tell me what the problem is .
I had this problem before on different roms. There is quite a few variables such the rom, radio, and kernel which could cause your battery to be hot. You may wanna try a different rom to see if you having the same issue.

Overheating

This thing gets hot! Just been configuring launcher pro which took around 5 minutes and wasn't data intensive and the back of the phone is really hot. So much that I can smell the plastic heating up! The battery drained real fast during the process too.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
Well that doesn't sound good! I haven't had anything like that. Have you checked the power intake?

Mine got really hot the first day I used it (27/4)...I was just checking out features and installing a few apps. I rebooted it after the battery was fully charged and it's been fine ever since.

I have the exact same problem, it happens especially when I play any games or intensive appliaction. The battery drains and it gets hot next to the camera, I suspect this is where the cpu lives. Do you think its because its rooted? because I rooted it as soon as I got it so I dont know what it was like before.
And as I am away from the uk for the next six weeks I cant even send it back to O2
No nothing to do with root, mine was same before and after, pretty normal to get hot on some demanding apps.

And i thought i was alone...
It gets really hot sometimes though, not to the extent of burnt plastic smell but it gets pretty uncomfortable touching around lens at the back.
I've been going through this this morning. It seems that the CPU loves to go up to 1.2GHz even if it doesn't need to be that high (and it stays there). Also there I've also been noticing through ADB shell that their are a few niggles. For example the wi-fi sharing process can start without even being activated.
For example this was a ADB shell top taken while running Cordy downclocked to 800MHz in setcpu. The phone was a tiny bit warm but only by the camera (where the CPU is). Basically, this just shows that if you are playing a game, nothing else is going on so the CPU shouldn't be going up to 1200MHz. And it plays the same as when it isn't underclocked.
I'm currently assisting Pulser with investigating this until he gets his SGS2.

My phone gets very hot at time too...
I also noticed wifi sharing starting up by itself. Yesterday it started by itself and used 10% battery usage even though I had wifi switched off the entire time..

Do you have root and Titanium/MyBackup Pro?
If you do, freeze anything that mentions wifi sharing, unless you are going to use wifi hotspot and kies air a lot.

My phone got so hot that it shut itself down!
since that i have done a complete reset of the phone and started from scratch again....100% better.
The problem as i see it is with all the 'tinkering' that we users do. All the additional launchers etc and widgets that you add really seem to mess the phone up!
My advice is keep the phone as samsung intended it...or at least change very little. You will see far improved battery life and none of the over heating problems.
Just my opinion but its worked for me.

Find the nearest Apple store near you.
The only time i had this was when it waa both charging, in a case and playing a big game...
Im currently chatting, listening to a live stream, charging and posting this, no problem with heat at all..
Perhaps its a problem with some specific phones

that's just not true.
Mine gets hot aswell .. it's random sometimes but usualy with playing games etc. I suspect it has something to do with the samsung drivers/software and not our tinkering.
Bugs bugs bugs...
Mine also gets fairly hot, which might be a little uncomfortable - but that's the sacrifice you make when you get such a high powered device in such a small space.
Well, amount of apps/tinkering/etc has nothing to do with the phone getting got UNLESS an installed app in messing something up.I have heard many such cases when a rogue app made the CPU run at 100% in different phones. If that's the case you have to find and remove the app.I'd suggest OS monitor for finding it.Never happened to me though!
What's more,it's normal for it to get more hot than your average phone,as it carries more power under the hood and has nothing to help it dissipate the generated heat,as it's plastic. The Desire HD does a very good job with managing heat and I have never exceeded 40 C,even when gaming with an overclock at 1.8GHz and performance governor. Not saying the DHD is better, but Samsung wouldn't have left something like this if it would damage the phone. So I tend to believe that it's designed to get hot.
Mine has overheated twice.
Both times, when trying to pair itself automatically to my car kit. The phone got really really hot (i noticed it warming my leg in my jeans pocket) and needed the battery pulling out to reset it. When it started back up, the running temp was nearly 50 degrees (in standby, it runs at about 27)
Hasn't done it since though, just keeping my eye on it!

Indeed. You can see this yourself within BBS (or other similar applications) by changed the point at which you wish to view statistics. For example, set it to list all events since the device was booted and it will show up. Now change this to only view events since the device was last unplugged off the charger. Now it's no longer there and since it's only happening while the device is charging, it's nothing to worry over.
I haven't researched what this service is though, but combined with the logic of what I started and what NervGaz said (awesome name the easy), I'm certain that it isn't having any ill effect on battery like all. I started monitoring battery consumption again street the OTA KitKat update because of several complaints I read about and was trying to help then out as MANY of them were suggesting just to do a factory reset and I had jump and say something because a factory reset is a drastic last measure attempt and quite honestly told them that a reset won't help a thing since they will go back to the same habits as before, meaning installing the same battery sucking applications (*cough* Facebook) or have apps such that set to sync all the time, etc.
Even if it was an issue brought on by a bad KitKat installation, the phone can always be fixed (with the knowledge i guess) without resorting to a factory reset. I've never had to perform one on my life, even now using my unrooted replacements G2. Never got around to rooting this one and also currently using apps which require me to remain unrooted. Now, being that I'm unrooted now, there could be the small chance of a system file getting corrupted etc that I wouldn't be able to fix, but if that happened I'd just root, fix the issue, and unroot.
Kind of went of track there, most likely due to the fact that performing a factory reset is always thrown around as the first step in trying to solve any issue on the phone. In rare cases like a corrupted file in a directory you can't access and you don't want to out can't root your phone, then yes. The Verizon telephone service people (I don't like giving them a title...some are very good at what they do but...we won't go there) are famously guilty for using resets the magic portion that cures all ailments.
Anyways, the point that I was trying to make before going on that rant was those posts on the other forum was what prompted me to investigate battery concerns, because from what I thought, KitKat was supposed to improve on battery consumption by (no clue the accuracy that numbers as I don't have an official source) up to 20%.
On KitKat I've been getting around 5-6 hours of battery life. So far I'm at 37% battery left, with 4 hours and 17 minutes since being unplugged with an estimated 1 hour and 57 minutes left. Doesn't sound very good does it for the average G2 does it? Not until you realize screen on time has been 4 hours and 6 minutes, with my main activities being surfing forums and typing a LOT as well as some time dedicated to my favorite mobile game at the moment which also happens to use more battery than ant other game I've played...Avabel Online (IgN is Styrael if anyone plays - lvl 64 gunslinger)
I haven't run across anything out of the ordinary yet when it comes to battery life but kids still early. Sorry for the long post there, I think I'll get back to Avabel. I hope the 100% exp, jexp (job experience), and drop rare bonuses are still in effect.

[Q] Why the HELL is the Nexus 4 so BUGGY?!?!?!

What the hell is wrong with the Nexus 4? I thought it was Google's eldest son and would care to treat it to a few bug fixes once in a while. And stock Android? Biggest joke ever in the history of man. My bloated AT&T Galaxy S4 was 100x more stable than this piece of junk. Ever since I got my phone in August, the Nexus 4 is STRIFE with bugs. I can't remember the last time I used the phone without a major bug happening in a day.
-Randomly shuts off. This is F*CKING huge. I will press the right button to turn off the screen, and it won't turn on again. I have to hold the button for like a minute straight to restart the phone. What the hell is up with this?????
-CALLING DOES NOT WORK? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A PHONE IF YOU CAN'T MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS? I HAVE RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM ALMOST EVERY TIME I RECEIVE A CALL. I have to restart the phone, wait for 2 minutes, then call back the person. This is EXTREMELY frustrating.
-The Youtube app works like 20% of the time. I am not even kidding. I expect the app to malfunction than work. It will spin on forever or it will give an error. And no, don't ****ing tell me to restart the phone. I'm not doing that for a video.
-I have a screen lock and I can reply to text messages without unlocking the phone. What the hell is the purpose of a screen lock if I don't have to input that in?
-The battery percentage is completely off half the time. Sometimes it goes 0-100% charge in like 2 hours and sometimes it takes 5 hours. The longer it takes, the longer the battery lasts. This is so frustrating when I have to go somewhere and my battery is 20% at noon.
-The wifi won't connect sometimes and the data won't turn on even if I have full bars. I would have to wait like 15 minutes for the data to turn on.
There is literally so many bugs, I can't remember them all right now. Stock Android my ass. Someone please direct me to a bloated ROM that is stable than this hunk-o-junk.
Do you feel good screaming at nobody? Got it off your chest now. Your phone has obviously seen better days, if your that unhappy with it then don't continue to use it. My nexus 4 still runs like dream no matter what version of android I'm on. The only bugs my device has either comes with stock Google issues or custom ROM bugs. Most bugs are from dirty flashing over and over I'm sure you know that. Wi-Fi bugs would be kernel related if not hardware, your battery sounds like it's gonna catch fire soon. I can't stress enough that these issues your having require your investigating to localize wtf is going on. I hope I've helped.
You bought a phone nearly 2 years after it was released? Was it new, or did you buy it second hand? What version of Android are you running? Are you rooted? Are you running Xposed or other mods? Custom kernel? What have you or the previous owner done with it? Have you done a factory reset?
Cuz mine is 2 and a half years old, and apart from the charging port being a bit touchy with a worn power cord, it's fast and stable.
I mean, if you're looking for a solution to problems, you have to tell us what's going on. Otherwise, you just look like a fool that likes to complain about crap that nobody else (for some reason) is experiencing.
Nope... My wife's been using her N4 for two and a half years and haven't experienced any of those.
Sounds like you have a faulty device, sorry.
seems like your current device has some issues, in general nexus4 very good and fast device
The nexus 4 is not buggy. You bought a broken phone that powers off and your screaming that the phone is buggy? Use your head.

It doesn't mean the majority of people are having issues. Did you not notice that there are still lots of people on these forums that aren't complaining of such problems? I wouldn't put up with random shut downs, so if mine ever did that, I'd be done with it.

I bought a used lg g2 and the LCD screwed up days after I bought it. Should I go into the g2 forums and tell all the people that are completely happy with their g2, that the g2 is junk?

The random shut downs are annoying.. Although you'll probably find it hasn't shut down.. If it's anything like mine it will be on, but won't turn the screen in no matter what you try.
Try plugging it into a PC next time it does it.. 90% of the time it will be recognised, you can even get minimal log cat messages.. But nothing I have tried will awaken it.
Mine didn't do it from new but it's getting worse now.. Nothing seems to fix it, have reflashed many times.
The other problems aren't common on the nexus 4, but I've seen the shutdown one on a few different devices now. It's certainly not even close to all of them, but enough are starting to do it.
Sounds like you have something wrong, I am running 5.1.1 rooted, with the LTE hack, and it is fast and stable. No random reboots. You might try running a logcat and see what the issue may be. Clearly you are not looking for help, as you provide no information or detail as to your handset or specifics on the issues you are seeing. Do you feel better to vent? I would put my N4 up against any other handset, even 2 years later.
Let him scream to himself. Useless thread, it has no purpose but relieving his feelings. Here is not the place for that.
I can recreate a lot of issues OP mentioned. I also have the random shutdowns, enormous battery drains, no sound in calls, etc.. I got my phone on day 1 and it seems that these bugs get worse lately.. Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy a new phone right now, so I'll have to just live with it.. I spent countless hours trying out fixes but nothing really worked permanently..
Could all of this have to do with production batches or hardware revs? Mine is a rev11 bought new in Sep 2013, I never experienced any of these bugs (except for the sleep-of-death which I've only come across twice on KK, so not a reoccurring condition). Ironical that you haven't mentioned the ONLY widely acknowledged bug affecting the n4 (which 5.1 seems to have finally solved): the infamous camera reboot. Only Lollipop helped for me; as long as I was stuck with KK it was a feckin nightmare!
Sorry for the poem, just giving my 2 cents about what's an acknowledged bug and what is not.

Logs are free if you want some help. Could be the hardware, but without knowing details impossible to say.
I had the camera reboot once in the 7 months I've owned this phone. Happened when I went to take a picture in a message I was sending directly, which I dont do very often. That's the only reboot or crash I can remember ever happening to this phone. Nothing like my sisters s3 that freezes almost every day since she got it apparently.
