[Q] Just want to tether... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm not rooted, nor do I really want to root...unless it's my only option, in order to tether. FoxFi and ES File Explorer were working great for me up until last week's update. Now I'm blocked when I try either program.
Any options here? Or is rooting my only one?
Thanks,

Nope....you can't even root until someone figures out an exploit...
where you end up, depends on where you start.
AT&T SGH-I337 32G

I am rooted with the latest update pushed OTA by AT&T... and mine works fine, except I still see the 611 message. I just have to ignore it.
You may not have to enable root, though. Try ES File explorer, and when the 611 message comes up, just hit the home button.

I've tried Foxfi and ES File Explorer and with both I get the error message: "Mobile data is not available or invalid SIM"
I'm not rooted and I have the most recent OTA update.

Do you have data enabled?

I was rooted, updated and lost my root but kept PDANet, so now when you open PDANet (The new version contains FoxFi integrated) and when you get the 611 message, just click Home, and it still works, I haven't need it yet, but just for testing I tried it a couple of minutes ago, and it worked, like I'm mentioning here.

Yes I do. Do you think it's an issue that I've got a Tmo SIM in an ATT phone?

I do not know why, data is data, but it may be related to the Tmobile SIM.

The latest update from at&t caused a number of issues with my phone... after two complete factory resets, I got it running again but it was ridiculous. It went from sitting on my nightstand one night to being useless without wifi the next morning. System info showed the network as "unknown" and a signal loss of 75% on this unknown network. Was forced to unroot and reset those two times... phone is still slightly sluggish, especially on the lock screen. The new patch is just bad news in my opinion.

I'm not familiar with it. All I know is ES File Explorer allows the hot spot, if you hit the home button rather quickly after the creation of the hot spot happens. Although the 611 message appears, the hot spot should be started as well.

I screwed up my phone

Galaxy Note 3 Verizon
My fault. I was following a youtube video on how to get free tether. I did it, rebooted my phone and now
I am stuck at the white Verizon screen. After I did this I found the process was for TMobile, not Verizon.
It's been 3 days now and I'm afraid to do anything. A few folks have said, all I need to do is reflash with
a Verizon stock rom. I know for most, this is probably simple but, I'm almost in tears over this because I don't
even understand that instruction. I'm pretty sure once I have the correct file, I can flash my phone. I just
don't know what the name of or where this file is?
I did download these files hltevzw_MJ7rootODEX.zip and hltevzw_MJ7rootDeOdex.zip but I'm afraid to move for fear it's not the right one.
Is there anyone out there that might want to help?
Thank you

First, thank you just for replying. I'm not sure of the terminology but, I can boot into the screens pressing Vol DN, Home and Power
I can also boot into the screens holding Vol UP, Home and Power,
I don't know what Safestrap is. Sorry.

You would have had to install safestrap in the first place... and seeing as how you don't know what that is, I'm guessing you didn't,
That's OK, though, if you can get into download/ odin mode you *should* be able to odin a copy of MJ7 or MJE. Try the steps listed in the guide I posted and see if that works first.

The file you need is N900VVRUBMJ7_N900VVZWMJ7_N900VVRUBMJ7_HOME.tar.md5. That is the Stock ROM that came with your phone and that is what you need to flash with Odin. You can download Odin 3.09 from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539. Install Odin on your computer and launch the application. Boot the phone into download mode, connect your phone via your USB cable and make sure that the Com slot turns blue, it may take a second as windows might need to install the correct drivers. Click on the AP slot and browse to the TAR file you downloaded. After you load the file into the AP slot, press start. This will flash the stock firmware on to your phone, it will be just like the day you brought it home from the store. Everything will be wiped out and reinstalled. Don't be scared to do it though, it's probably the only way you will get things working correctly again. Hope it all works out for you!

Use kingo. Search for it on Google. Hook up to your pc with your USB cable. Make sure USB debugging is on. To enable USB debugging go into about phone in your settings and press build number seven times, it will open up developer options. You can enable it there. Kingo is simple, after your plugged in just press root. Theres nothing to it. Personally I would replace the superuser app that comes with kingo with the one from the play store. Open superuser and select settings, at the bottom select "switch superuser app". It will uninstall and you can install the trusted version from the play store. Enjoy.

[Q] Help a Noob please? Flashing the Stock ROM won't work

Hello, I am new to these forums as well as owning an Android device, and was directed here from Reddit when I posted my question there. to save time, I'll simply copy/paste my explanation of my predicament from Reddit, but if I seem to be leaving something out, please tell me so I can offer up as much information as I can.
"I've owned a Galaxy S5 for a little over 2 weeks, and for the past 4-5 Days, any time I try to Turn it on, I receive a message that says "Secure Fail: Modem", in red letters at the top left of the screen, and in the middle there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation point with the following text underneath "System software unauthorized by verizon has been detected on your device. please shut Down and go to the nearest verizon store" I'm 17, and currently staying at Governor's school, so I didn't have a ride until yesterday when my Dad and Uncle came to help me try to fix my phone. We went to the Verizon store, where they said that it looked at though I had tried to "root" the phone, which I haven't. My theory is that this is the result of a pokemon game I downloaded from the internet for an emulator. We Called tech support who couldn't help us, but after a little Research, I tried downloading Odin and flashing it with the Stock Rom, but every time I do that, I get the same Error message, regardless of whether I wipe the phone first, or Remove the sim card or whatever, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong and thought that maybe reddit could help me."
I've tried to flash the stock rom several times as per the following video: apparently I cannot link to outside content; however, the video is titled "How to Flash Stock Firmware for Galaxy S5 [All Variants] by Odin3" on youtube
if anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Restart your phone in recovery mode by shutting the phone down and then starting it back up by holding the home, volume up and the power keys until you see the blue text at the top of the phone saying recovery booting. When it boots into recovery use the volume key to select wipe cache partition and then press the power key to run that. Then select wipe data/factory reset and run that. When that's done select reboot system and see if it starts normally. If that doesn't work try Odin with the tar and pit file.

I use this method and it worked great. I suggest you try it again, to include re downloading the tar file. Follow the straightforward instructions. Leave your phone connected to the computer even after you flash the tar. It will go through the whole reboot process while connected to the computer. If you still have problems, ask mrxtc (op). I see him all over the place and he seems pretty good at helping people fix problems.

I hadn't attempted to root the phone prior, I didn't even know what that meant until I googled the error message. that actually brought me to a thread on this site where somebody had tried to root their S3 and got the same message. as for the model of the phone, all I know is that it's an S5 and that I got it at Verizon.

Other than what I posted in the recovery thread and what I posted a few posts up that's pretty much it. You could try the nand erase all and efs clear options, check the screen shot and make sure your check boxes are correct. Also if you didn't download the files from the thread I posted I suggest you do. Honestly if none of what was already suggested doesn't work I would contact Samsung. I've had and seen your error before and successfully reset my phone before.

i guess my question was how did you try to run the rom? its a long shot but thinkin since technically its a rom file maybe you used it wrong.. also, theres dev edition s5 and retail s5 for vzw so it does matter which model you have and which odin files youre trying to use.. since phone is less than a year old, id contact samsung if you cant get it fixed and theyll send you a return kit and reflash the software for you.. something similar happened to someone with an s5 active on att n samsungs gonna help him.. only reason he needs to send it in however is cuz there is no s5 active tar available yet for him to odin. you should b able to on yours but hard to fix without having the device in hand and u saying uve tried everything

theres a soft brick (recoverable) and a hard brick (not recoverable).. normally a hard brick your phone wont come on or go into any mode at all.. soft brick is when it starts up but either bootloops or wont boot at all into the os (like yours).. im just lost as to why it wont work! crazy.. if u got at vzw and dont know what a dev edition is then u most likely have a retail s5 so mister odin guide should work..

Have you tried Kies to restore the phone to stock? Or even Verizon's Upgrade Tool (which also repairs)?

The only way I can do that is to get the phone to boot, which it will not get past the error stated in this thread: "SECURE FAIL: modem" I just tried to get all of that to work (sorry the late response was at work) and again it's a no go, I'm going to take it to Verizon, but I'm not optimistic about what kind of results I'm going to get there.
The phone came with the NI2 SW to begin with, and I tried to install that with Odin. gets me about half a second of the normal Samsung splash screen then straight back into the error, after that first boot, no splash only the error.
Thanks for the suggestions though.

I couldn't even get my phone to start yesterday... just a black screen. I thought it was hard bricked. I did a chat with Samsung support, and they helped me recover in less than five minutes.

I'm in the same boat. I've tried everything to get this issue resolved and I'm not having any luck.
Anyone know how I determine which tar file I should be using (NE9, NCG, etc)? I've got a SM-G900V and I think I've pretty much tried all of the tar files via this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880.

[STOCK][ODIN][TARs][3/17/15]Latest - N910PVPU1BOB7 Stock TAR

UPDATED 3/17/15 - Added OB7 tar
I didn't see a decent link to the stock NIE/NK2/OB7 tar that wasn't on rapidgator or similar crappy site, so I uploaded it to AFH.
Required Files

How to Flash
Install Samsung USB Drivers (if you haven't already)

Unzip Odin-v3.07.zip
Right-click on Odin3-v3.07.exe > Run as Administrator
Reboot your phone into Download mode - Power off, then press and hold Power + Home + Volume Down. Press Volume Up when you see the warning screen

Oops, sorry shabby! If you had one, I didn't see it. You didn't have a thread for it, right? Cause I looked and didn't see one.
There's a few already, in general where these threads belong. Moving this there.

This happens on a brand spanking new Sprint note 4 right out of the box. I know this because when me and my wife got our new phones at a corporate Sprint store the sprint installer "stopped working" on first boot when they were activating our phones and turning them on for the first time. This is caused by the way they have these installer/preload apk's in the rom and the fact that the installer has to contact the network and actually download files during setup. This is NOTHING to worry about. Simply reboot your phone a second time and the sprint configuration installer will initialize and do it's thing. This is jst a little quirk but I've seen on on stock unrooted phones and rooted phones exactly the same.

Grand Prime Stuck on tmobile logo after root and reboot

I have rooted my phone twice so far, the first time using kingo root pc and the second time using kingo root apk. After the first root, i manually rebooted my phone and it got stuck on the white tmobile screen. It would make the notification vibration or the vibration that it normally makes when booting up. But after the vibration it would not start up. Approximately 15 seconds would go by and it would vibrate again. This happened repeatedly and did not end. I then fixed it after fiddling with it for a few hours and coming up with something i didn't find on the internet and tried a second time with the kingo apk. After root i then installed supersu and after the install (binary or whatever it is, i chose normal not cfw) it prompted me to reboot and i chose the reboot now option. The same problem happened again and i fixed it again already knowing what to do. Someone please help me fix this problem so that it doesn't happen again.
how?
How did you fix it? I have the same exact problem - used kingo root, then installed supersu, rebooted, and now it's stuck on the TMobile screen
ho do u fix it

Basically, (and i did this more than once so it DOES work... or at least for me) i installed samsung kies, kies 3, and smart switch since i was desperately in needed of a fix. i used smart switch to get it back to normal by putting the phone in download mode then restoring it. other people have success with kies but i did not, just experiment with the different applications and you should be able to restore your phone. BUT, this will I repeat THIS WILL reset all the data on your ENTIRE phone! so please be sure to take note of anything that is not backed up as it will be ENTIRELY LOST. I hope you can at least get your phone working again

Root files for t-mobile s7

*Edited. I uploaded which factory firmware worked for me on a t-mobile s7 as of 10/30/2016 to dropbox if anyone needs it.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bjz0du5b6kyt3g7/AADETkXwGhpRMSQoI2bmrupBa?dl=0
These are what worked for me. Included is a link to the factory firmware if you screw something up.
Turn on developer options/Usb debugging. After installing your Samsung USB drivers http://stockroms.net/file/Drivers/Samsung/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe , plug it in. Click allow on your phone.
Put it in download mode. Open odin, click AP and choose the .tar file. Click start.
After reboot unlock the phone and open fastboot folder. Double click root.
After reboot, transfer busybox.apk or download busybox. When setting up busybox, make sure to install it to /system/xbin. Not /su/xbin.
Something goes wrong, use the same odin to flash the firmware you download from the included link. I would have included the files but their 2.1 gb.
Again, this is just what worked for me.
What follows rooting is your choice.
this kind of rooting method cause lag on the phone?? because i rooted a g935t time ago and it was impossible to use because the constant lags in the interface

After you root it it automatically sets your governor as performance. It needs to be made interactive before you do anything.
This is what I did to fix the lag.

Yes sir.
If you want you can follow this steps for a completely free lag phone.
1. After flashing the eng kernel, go to PlayStore and Download Kernel Adiutor and set Gov to Interactive on both the Big and Little.
2. Download Flashfire and flash Echoed Rom.
I'm using this on my T-Mobile Vatiant.

i am getting a boot loop at the tmobile logo accompanied by vibrating seemingly randomly. the only answer seems to be to flash the stock file you provide. I wonder why its not working for me. thanks for your efforts either way, clear and simple.

it was because the phone updated to the pki or whatever released on 11/5/2016. I used all your files in odin at once to downgrade, then was able to proceed perfectly. thanks again
Thanks for the files. It's a shame though this device has been secured as much as it has with little development. I've always had phones with full root, customization, and control. With the root methods so far, I mean it works but there's just too many cons and I've tried everything to get performance back post root. Went back to stock in the mean time.
Is this the best and only way to Root the Tmobile variant of the S7?
