Ok I dont get what I am doing wrong when I flash a custom rom. Its seems the only rom I can flash is the original one toast had with the Super user permission. When i try to flash other roms they just loop on the boot screen. I dont know what I am doing wrong I wipe the cache like it says to do.
Am I missing a step or what someone anyone let me know.
this happens to alot of people. you are not alone!
Wiped cache and user data?
I have tried that I have wiped the first three options on the wipe screen and still loops with every rom but one
Clockwork recovery doesn't wipe dalvik properly from what I hear and that would cause a loo.
I have tried clockwork and and just rebooted my phone into recovery the manual way and that still doesn't do it.
Please put the topic of the thread in the Title. That's what it is for.
Question, you said the Rom that toast first supplied. Have you done nand unlock? Most roms now require the second part to obtain full root. Fresh, damage, etc all require both steps of toasts root.
Wipe cache and data...i use tom manager to get in recovery mode then I wipe everything from there..i don't use rom recovery to wipe...just to get in recovery...

Yeah did all that too. idk what to do maybe blow up and start over.
Starting fresh does work wonders sometimes. Do you have a custom recovery flashed to the partition? And have you also double checked to make sure you can successfully remount the system? (just to ensure your name is unlocked, not entirely sure what the problem could be)
So, how do I start from stratch??
Hmmm. Well you could flash a stock Rom with no root and start back at toast's part 1 of rooting..... but I am quite sure you could just repeat part 2 of toasts rooting method. thats what i'd do. Start at part two and redo all of that. Keep that recovery flashed, then do all the wiping and just drop a Rom on your card and install it through reboot recovery command.
Just an update I did the rootinng over this time i used the Simple Root .2. Thats the 1 2 3 click method and that worked for me so now i can flash roms thanks guys
Congratis if you need Rom help let me know. I'm not a dev but I'm a advance user since mytouch 3g came out

Thanks I am just looking for a good Rom to install. Is there anyway to save apps you download from the market place when switching to a new Rom? Tired of re installing all my apps when I switch roms.
titanium backup
Thanks, do you guys recommend any roms?
thats like asking someone what kind of pants they like
lol. best bet is to go to the dev forum and see which ones you like. Try one try em all
True I am stuck on one for now I really like the Fresh 0.5.3. Its trimmed down and seems fast. There where a couple out there that seemed to bogged down with all the graphics and apps they left on there.
This is my first post. I would really appreciate anybody helping me out here. I can't seem to get any straight answers, or answers I can understand, anyway, so here goes.
I have an HTC Mytouch 4g. I did a temporary root (using the method at theunlockr.com) and uninstalled the monopoly app. I was going to uninstall a bunch of other stuff but I got nervous and did a factory data reset (in the SD & phone storage area). All of my marketplace apps reinstalled, which I thought wasn't supposed to happen, but anyway.... I did the volume down/power on and see now that my phone is GLACIER PVT SHIP S-ON. So my question is how to interpret the state that my phone is now in. Is it factory? Is it rooted? Will the T-Mobile OTA updates work? Why is the monopoly app still gone? Is my warranty voided?
Since the Monopoly app was pre-installed, it was a system app, therefore it was in the system partition. Factory reset only erases the data partition, which stores user data, such as your Google account info and what apps you've downloaded. It does nothing to the system partition, bootloader, recovery image, etc. Then, when you rebooted and re-entered your Google account, it pushed the apps you've previously downloaded to your phone because this information is backed up with Google. Basically, you're back where you started before doing the factory reset.
Temproot means you have root access until the next device reboot. Unless you finished the whole procedure to get permanent root access, you should see "S-ON" in your bootloader.
If you want that Monopoly app back, I think your best bet is to flash a complete stock ROM. Do a forum search and see what you find. In the future, it's best to make a backup of the entire system before you attempt any changes. You'll have to flash a custom recovery image to make backups, but it's worth it and probably one of the best reasons to root your device. As far as uninstalling crap, I say avoid that mess altogether and just flash a custom ROM that has all that garbage removed. Some of these customs are more recent versions of Android than even the OTA updates.
If all u did was a temp root u shud b fine.u can find the monolopy apk anywhere and reinstall it.i doubt ur warrenty is void.

I encrypted my 10.1 yesterday without thinking all the way though. I found out that I could no longer flash kernels while the tablet is encrypted, since the SD card is not accessible in CWR.
I've tried doing a factory reset on my tab and each time, it boots up like nothing happened. I've also tried removing the pin that I put on it and the option to remove it is grayed out.
Do any of you know of a way to do a full wipe on the 10.1? Or could I reflash it using ODIN?
Thanks in advance.
id like to know this as well
still nothing? im starting to think this is an easy fix that nobody has posted about yet
there has to be something that im missing
try post # 6 in the linked thread, restore with unmodified vanilla version image from second link provided in the post, after booting from fastboot into recovery with clockworkmod recovery img; pushing it into the device sd with adb commandline, check the post for modifications and the link for details.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161325
whenever i try to reset to factory defaults, it just reboots like nothing happened
re-flash a stock firmware via odin as tar or fastboot/nandroid as img (backup restore)
Ones the tab is encrypted, there's no way to un do it. Unless you do what mughalgxt suggested. Good luck
Thanks guys, I went through some of these steps and found some other good tutorials to get me back up and running. All i wanted was to try the new kernel/bonsai rom out and I'm now able to do that
**** encryption, put a lockscreen password and be done with it.
I'm still struggling with this, as well: off to read some of the linked threads, because even with flashing a stock image with ODIN I'm still not able to recover the device. At least I managed to proceed past the boot loop I WAS in (when attempting to flash from CWM) - but now, I can get to the point where the device prompts me for the decryption key (meaning, it's clearly not yet restored to factory defaults) - but can't get it boot to completion. I also note that I've still got CWM Recovery, not stock.
It seems, at some point, encryption-key be damned, right? Meaning, if I don't care about recovering the contents of the encrypted partition - surely these low-level tools have the ability to simply format the partitions? Perhaps not - at least, not CWM - as attempts to format /data continue to fail.
Off to review the linked threads to try to gain some additional insight.
I ran into this same issue a long while back. As I recall (and it's been a while), you won't be able to wipe from CWM, but you can wipe from Settings / Privacy / Factory Data Reset. I could be wrong, but I know that I didn't have to do any adb pushing or anything with special images.
Hi SacTilt-
Thanks for the reply - and agreed: Had I actively started the effort from a functioning device, I think I could have selected that option.
As it turns out - I ran CWM, rebooted into recovery, and... next thing I knew, I was in boot loop hell.
I've tried flashing a variety of files via ODIN: Some at least allow the device to boot to the point where I get the initial password prompt - which I can provide, and proceed past... but then the device just 'goes blank'.
What I'm looking for is a 'start-from-scratch', no concern for data loss, delete the dang encrypted /data folder already, will ya?... approach.
As I've mentioned, a variety of ODIN files from a myriad of sources haven't seemed to quite do the trick. I feel like I'm missing something obvious - but can't find the right angle to spot it.
Perhaps fastboot might be what I'm looking for?
FWIW: the device was rooted when I started, so I've got full Titanium backups, with which I can restore, once I recover the actual device / OS.
Thanks for any insight.
Hey guys...if anybody finds a solution to this, please let me know...I am stuck with this same damn experimental ROM I've had from day one...it's getting really old. All I want is to get rid of this stupid encryption. Thanks for any help. Tried ODIN flashing, wiping data from security screen, wiping from CMR, etc.
Have you tried formatting the sd? Whenever i had my ns4g i accidentially did the same thing and i wiped the SD and it removed the encryption.

I've pored over the linked thread, and literally DOZENS other, here...
I think the one factor that may be causing me troubles is that my device was (IS) encrypted. It was also rooted, and had CWM installed, etc. Alas, I tried to boot into recovery, to take a nandroid backup in preparation for doing a factory reset (trying to do some additional testing / analysis around encryption, and its impacts on rooting / device management in a corporate environment).
That's when Bad Things started. First, it was a boot loop. I put it in Download mode, and used ODIN to flash both the CWM (first) and then stock recovery - but in no case can I get the device into recovery mode. When selected, the screen just goes black...
I haven't yet tried nvflash - and I'm wondering if that might be the tool for the job, since ODIN seems unable to influence the encrypted /data partition.
No concerns for data loss - I have a full Titanium backup ready and waiting if I can just get the thing to reboot...
Thanks in advance for any insight / guidance!

If you have your Titanium backup copied to your computer, then you can restock the entire tab using ODIN(follow the unrooting instructions in the above linked thread). Then copy back the Titanium backup and you should be good to go again
One would think. Alas, Odin seems to choke on the encrypted partition - doesn't seem to be able to restore /overwrite the filesystem.
I finally caved and just sent it back, and had Verizon send me another.

I've been running PA for a while now, and I was wondering what the best method for swapping Roms is. (What to wipe) and how to do so without losing what is stored on my internal sd card, our currently installed apps.
(As a side question, what are some good roms with pie?)
Nexus 7
Factory reset, which will wipe data (but leaves /data/media intact) and cache. Although generally not necessary, I'd also format /system. Many devs will have their updater script format it as part of the flash, but I have seen a handful that have not. Your apps will be wiped when doing a clean flash- that's just the way it is. You should not be dirty flashing (wiping just cache and dalvik) between roms as it will lead to problems. You can use apps such as Titanium Backup or Rom Toolbox to backup and restore your user apps. Do not restore system apps or data.
Your side question is a quick and easy way to get this thread locked. Go to the dev forum for your device, whether it's tilapia or grouper, and do some reading and test drive a rom or two that piques your interest. There is no substitute for research and forming your own informed opinions.
you should also nandroid backup before you flash anything, that way you have a safe point to restore to if something goes wrong, or you don't like the new rom.
if it's a rom upgrade (not rom switch), you can flash directly over the top at your own risk if the changes are relatively minor and the dev says full wipe not needed. you won't lose any data and it saves having to set everything up again. i've personally never had a problem when flashing an upgrade straight over the top. I always do a nandroid backup beforehand though just in case :good:
and yeh..find a rom you like, not what someone else says is best for them...
If you're flashing 'like-for-like', ie, flashing a ROM upgrade, you can generally 'dirty flash' it over the top - UNLESS THE DEVELOPER STATES OTHERWISE.
The developer of the ROM I use always states 'no wipes needed' when he releases a new version...
-----------
If you're changing ROMs completely, then a factory reset is necessary, otherwise you're likely to have all manner of problems...
So backup your apps using Titanium beforehand...
-----------
You can optionally format /system... but be careful... make definitely sure you have on internal storage, either...
a) A flashable ROM .zip
...or...
b) a NANDROID backup
...or you'll find you have a tablet with no OS... just a custom recovery and the bootloader... although not irresolvable, such a situation is a pain in the arse to fix!
-----------
Above all... before you do anything - MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP - I cannot emphasise this enough. It takes less than 5 minutes. And it is your lifeline back to a functioning Nexus, should anything go wrong.
Good luck...
Rgrds,
Ged.
