[Q] new S4 => do I have a speaker issue ? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
just spent an hour configuring my new S4 after (saying goodbye to my Xperia Arc S).
Was excited at first, but now I notice that whenever the S4 has to play sound (notification, ringtone, music) a get a very audible "click" followed by a hissing sound on the background. After the sound has played I get another 2 seconds off hissing, followed by another "click". After that it's silent again. (so whenever it switches the speaker on/off).
Is this a know (software?) issue or am I unlucky and should call warranty on it ?
Thanks !

If it was me I would return for a replacement. Probably bad hardware. I have an VZW S4 and my speaker is fine.

no improvements yet, will contact the repair center tomorrow.
hope they can swap it and not keep it for weeks or give me a refurbished model.

You can try to update to the latest official firmware and see if it's the same. If yes, then you should ask for a replacement.

by any chance is it making the same noise as this?
this is what mine sounds like

No it's another noise. Vibrate works fine, sound itself is also ok. It's just that whenever the speaker is activated I hear this click and background noise.

My brothers i9500 loudspeaker stopped working after owning it 2 months.Since i9500 is not officially sold in Romania,I ordered a replacement part from eBay.My question is if I replace the loudspeaker will it work as it did before? I upgraded and downgraded the FW and the sound came back for 10 minutes, but then it made strange noise and it stopped working. Also because of this issue it's not detecting the earphones eather (BTW they working when the sound came back for 10 mins).
My question is :
1.Does the loudspeaker has any connection to the earphone functionality as it's not working ATM?
2.Replacing the loudspeaker will resolve this issue? Or it's a serious HW failure.
P.S.I should mention that everything else works just fine ex.camera, vibration, ear speaker, battery holds charge. It's just it doesn't output any sound at all.
Thanks in advance for your answer.Waiting for a reply.

background hiss

On my hd2, if i have my headphones in and i am using the keyboard, which has the clicking sound on, whenever i press any button theres a hiss that comes on.
also, if i am playing music and i pause it, i can hear a hiss in my headphones. Does anyone else's hd2 have the same problem?

It sounds like your headphones might be extremely sensitive, or there's an abnormal amount of EMI in your phone. What headphones are you using? Also, are you running the SRSWow app? Or maybe the HTC Audio Booster?
I'm using Monster Jamz. they work perfectly with other devices.
but its not just the headphones
whenever a sound plays on my speaker, it'll play and then for another second there will be hissing.
i am using audio booster, but it has been hissing before then :/

Are you running a custom/upgrade ROM? If so, did you hard-reset immediaetly after flashing to it?
Nope. Im on the stock Rom.
i tried playing around with the text message tone, and it is really apparent in the MSNMSNGER tone. right after the tone there is ilke 2 seconds where the speaker is definitely on and is hissing

So you're on the original stock rom and never upgraded to the newer one, right?
Did this just start happening out of the blue, or was it always there? I still think it's related to too much EMI (electromagnetic interference) from the your phone somewhere...I've cranked my volume all the way up, and I can't recreate the issue. Since it happens on the speaker and headphones both, it's most likely an internal hardware issue.
I got this phone like 2 days ago and its been there out of the box. To recreate i put the speaker right up to my hear and make any noice (ie. like the click of the keyboard) and afterwears i hear a hissing noise for 2 seconds then it shuts off.
I talked to a t mobile rep and he said for me to wait the 14 days until buyers remorse is over, then they can use the warranty to ship my new phone. thanks for trying to help

Yep, that's the point it was sounding like you were at then, needing to just get a new one...I'm pretty sure you won't see the issue in the replacement (shouldn't, anway)

Don't wait. Ask for the replacement now.
I would, but the thing is, i bought it on the phone. so i would have to ship it back. then would have to reorder it. that would take about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks and i cannot go without a phone for that long :/.

Low microphone volume?

Does anyone else have the person they are talking to mention how low you sound to them when speaking on the phone?
It seems like I have a low microphone on my nexus 4, unless the phone is directly in front of my mouth the person can't hear me clearly, I'm thinking it might be hardware but I know with some phones this can be corrected with a custom driver that makes the microphone more receptive
Is there an app or setting that I can use that would disable noise cancellation in case that's what causing my mic to make me sound low?

Actually I have the exact same problem - not sure what we can do to fix it.
If I crank up the volume fully it appears to -sometimes- solve the low audio problem.

Its actually on stock, so I just rooted it, and will try with a different rom shortly.
Same thing here.. Sometimes they hear me, sometimes they don't even during the same call..
I'm starting to think the noise cancellation is playing some tricks.
While driving home this afternoon I was on headset on the freeway, where those I talked to could barely hear me.
Unplugged my headset (klipsch s4 image ii), and sound was good. After a while I plugged headset in again, still bad.
When coming off the freeway I kept the headset on while talking - and all of the sudden it was crystal clear (using the words of the guy I talked to at the time). At the same time I noticed that I had no data (outside even edge coverage), don't know if that is related or not.
Is there some way we could experiment / disable or tweak the noise cancelling?
Ps: I have had the same issues without headset also, so definitely something general software things going on

I had the same setup. I am using the Xylon (stable) 15 ROM for several days now, and SO FAR I think the microphone reception is better. I haven't heard complaint from the person I speak to on the regular. *cross fingers* hope it's 'fixed' in some way.

That's exactly how my phone was as well. I would be on one call for a while and all of a sudden out of nowhere the person I'm speaking to says I sound like I'm speaking across a room and I'm like 'wtf happened? I haven't changed positions since I started talking to you!'
I did a little testing with the person I was speaking to as well, to test the microphone receptiveness and the mic seems to pickup my voice better, I wasn't speaking directly into the mic and they said they heard me fine.

I have a sneaking suspicion It might have to do with the noise cancelation as well, I think on paper whoever designed that feature on the phone thought it would be cool but it doesn't seem to be panning out too well. I've read somewhere on this forum about how to increase microphone volume and cancel the noise cancellation using the Terminal Emulator app and/or the phone's dial codes (#*#*some sumbers*#*#).
I have the same earphones (no mic attached) and I have similar experience but I haven't taken note of it like you have since 95% of the time I have my headphones in the phone.
I also want to mention a little trick that I think seems to work when on calls. Whenever I turn the phone over, screen facing opposite of me, I hear less complaints of me sounding too low to the other person. Maybe it's doning something... i dont know.
Same issue - with headset only though
I have the same issue, people really struggle to hear me on conference calls (which I spend a lot of time on), so I have to hold the mic in front of my mouth to speak which gives awful sound quality. I don't have this issue when not using a headset (phone mic works fine).
Nexus 4 + Klipsch s4a = really quiet mic, people can't hear me at all.
Nexus 4 = No problem, phone mic works.
Note - music playback is fine, no issues there.
My klipsch headphones worked fine on my GNex, no issues, so I don't think it is a problem with them. It has been an issue from the moment I switched to a Nexus 4. Have also tried other headset (samsung one that came with Gnex) - and have the same issue of sounding very quiet on the headset mic.
I did wonder if it was an OMTP vs CTIA issue, but the button on my headset works fine to answer/hangup/skip tracks/open voice search etc. so I don't think it is that.
I also tested with another Nexus 4 handset using Soundmeter and got very similar results on both handsets, suggesting it isn't a handset issue (though not a very scientific test).
Does anyone have any ideas?
Just In Phone Calls?
Hi Folks,
Is this mic issue just related to phone calls?
I'm using the latest CM10.1 nightly build and my mic is useless for phone calls.
However, Google's voice search works just fine and if I record a video my voice is recorded just fine.
I could be wrong but I suspect the Nexus4 can not use the phone jack for incoming audio.
In my opinion when one plugs a headset into the audio jack the Nexus4 camera microphone
becomes activated, not the headset one. And the Nexus4 cam mic is really bad.
Again, I might be completely wrong. (I hope)

OMG you have it reversed. What a mess!
I have yet to see Google Search understand anything I say and video sound is horrible. Call audio is great.
Hi guys - I am on stock android - same issue on 4.2.2 as on 4.2.1.
This isn't just related to phone calls, same issue on google search. I tested headset mic pickup volume when speaking normally with Soundmeter - around 35-40dB (what it calls a quiet whisper at 3ft to quiet residential area, Park).
I also tried moving the headset mic closer and further away from my mouth with the phone in the same position - with the headset mic virtually touching my lips it went to about 60 dB (normal conversation at 3ft) - so it does seem to be related to the headset mic. I can only guess it is either a dodgy connection in the handset or some noise cancelling functionality that is cancelling out my voice!
Any ideas or thoughts greatly appreciated

Darn it!
I knew I was an outlier.
No way I'm getting a fix for my issue then
Anyone figure out a fix? I'm having similar issues with my microphone.
Hooked as bluetooth device in my vehicle, other end hears me fine.
On phone call using speaker phone, other end hears me fine.
On phone call WITHOUT speaker phone, other end cannot hear me at all.
Using a sound recording app to record voice, playback of the recording I can hear my voice faintly if I was YELLING during the recording.
Shazam/Soundhound apps do not work.
I am rooted on rasbeanjelly/trinity kernel. I have to say this issue started a few days ago when I have done no changes to the phone. Already running the rom/kernel for weeks.
I've tried flashing back to stock rom/kernel and the same problems persist.
Any ideas?

Just an update, I unrooted and reverted back to stock and the problem went away, so it was defnitely a software issue. Will be trying other roms/radios/kernels and see if the problem comes back.
I was on rasbeanjelly 4.2.2/trinity
akira112, did you get any success with your experiments?
Guys, is there any progress / comments regarding this issue?.. Microphone itself works fine when recording the voice with some app, but during the voice calls it is the mess...
My Nexus 4 is two months old and is being returned to Google due to the microphone constantly cutting me out on calls to business clients. I've tried every trick from sound apps to custom roms. No joy. I'm hoping my replacement doesn't have the same problem (although given the sheer number of postings on this issue, I suspect a Nexus 4 design flaw)...
Hello
Is there any solution to low microphone volume problem?
I have been using my N4 for a week and some people complain about my voice's volume. There was no such problem with my previous phone (Defy). There is no difference whether I use phone's mic or bluetooth headset.
My Nexus runs CM10.1 with Franco kernel.
Also keen for a solution
I just returned my first N4 due to the speakerphone cutting out after a minute or two, and getting stuck in non-speakerphone mode.
The replacement seems to not have this issue, which is nice.
But now people are telling me they can hardly hear me. It happens both with normal mode and speakerphone mode.
Ridiculous.
I will be calling Google tomorrow to see what they say, but I am not going to hold my breath for a decent response. Judging by the number of people reporting this issue online, it's not something Google has a solution for.
If anyone figures this out, I'd love to hear about it.
Have sent mine for repair because of this problem. People told they could not here me well.
Skickat från min GT-I9305 via Tapatalk 2
I have the same issue, couldn't fix it but what I noted was that any mic gain adjustments I made only applied to the phone's mic not the headset mic. That means that there is something else that modifies the headset mic, but I do not know.

Phone strangely switches between front and rear speaker.. why?

I received my device a couple of days back and today I encountered a very weird problem. Sometime phones uses the front speaker and sometimes it uses the rear loud speaker. I got a call, received it and turned the speaker on..the other person on call couldn't hear my voice but I could listen to hers. The a minute later the phone was playing everything from the front speaker rather the than rear. Be it audio songs, videos song anything. When I was pressing the volume rocker, there was no sound coming from any speaker. Finally, I restarted the phone and it's back to normal. What went wrong, any idea? As this might happen again.:s
My phone's condition: Totally stock. No root. No ROM. No kernel change. All stock. Running 4.2.2
Guess I was suppose to post it in Q&A forum. If so, mods, please move it there.

The EAR PIECE that 'can' be called a Front Speaker (as inside the earpiece is a speaker), which goes without saying.
-----------------------
Anyhow, back to the topic.. Has anyone encountered this issue on his/her device?
Seeing responses like the above quoted comment, I might add my phone rattles, but I don't find it an issue. As long as such things aren't affecting the usability of the device, I am completely OK with it. But 2 problems have really bothered me. One is well known, the camera can't focus at all and second is the subject of this thread. So, I really want to inquire if anyone came across this earpiece/speaker problem that I faced and how it was fixed, permanently.
RMA that sucker. Hardware fault.

I had a similar problem.
I would play music from the back but eventually it would play music in the earpiece. I forgot what I did prior, but it had to do with using a modified google play version.
I just re-flashed the rom and it worked fine after that.

Alright, thanks for the response.
I am playing music from the built in Music Player. And I am totally stock. Although it didn't happen again but I was hoping if I could know what to do (besides restarting) when it happens the next time.

Pop noise when receiving a Notification

I just got my moto x Pure a few days ago and i noticed when i receive a text message i get this pop noise after the notification sound stops playing. I went in the settings to change the notification sound and as im switching between them they all have a pop noise always after there done playing or sometimes before playing. If i try to change the ring tone it doesn't happen, they start and end fine with no pop noise. I remember having a similuar issue with my nexus 4 and to remedy the situation i would disable touch sounds and vibration but it doesnt seem to help with this phone.
Someone on reddit said he had the same issue. Anyone else experience this ?
Yep. Happens on my too. It's the speaker going online and standby. Happens on all phones, but in Moto X Pure is loud and noticeable. Cheap speaker? Don't know. Also on my, when playing the tone "Zeta" I get bad speaker crackling noise. Specially when volume is high.

Thank you for posting this. Now I know I'm not the only one with the problem. I was worrying I'd have to do an RMA, but maybe this'll be fixable with a software update.
Didn't even notice the crackling until I specifically listened for it. Now I can't unhear it. Ughh! This is going to drive me nuts. Similar issue with my N6. Playing music or videos there is no problem. Just notifications and ringtones.

Pretty sure they are. I have both though. I notice the pop very easily at night. I have a few apps set to priority, so they'll ring even when I'm sleeping. Last night I got a couple notifications and definitely heard an audible pop about a second after the tone stopped playing. It seems like it happens when power is being cut to the speaker.
My Nexus 6 had similar QC issues. The phone stopped detecting SIM cards about a month after I bought it. Moto sent me a replacement which I sold because it was NIB. Beginning to worry that Lenovo is cheaping out a bit too much on their flagships.
I don't have my phone in hand yet so...has anyone tried some third party ringtones or notifications? The reason I ask is because I imagine it's possible that the default recorded sounds may have some type of silent space after the "music" or the sound stops causing this. Maybe somebody can try a few home made ones to see if it still happens.
Yes i tried third party notification sounds. Same thing happens
Anyone else affected by this bug
Getting the pop noise as well. It's very noticeable. I'll hold off for awhile and see what Moto does about the issue.
I've got it as described above. Sounds like power coming on and then cutting off. Reminds me of powering on and off an old boombox from the 80's.

I have no POP noise at all. As I said before I think it has to do with the earliest batches that were delivered. Even though I ordered on the second day of pre-order I received mine several days after many others. Maybe I got mine from a second, or later batch?? No speaker distortion either even at full volume!
Decided to return it and get another one. Maybe I just got one of the bad batches. I also had a small scratch on it right out of the box. Would've ignored the scratch if everything else was good... but I can't unhear the speaker crackles and pop.
waiting now for return authorization for this problem, which is a little hairy because I'm not the original owner. I do have the receipt though--shouldn't the warranty transfer?
That pop noise very noticable when using viber...
Also try to press keyboard keys and put the speaker closer to the ear... Its like speakers are turn on/off ...
yeah, it's the amplifier shutting off. happens on crappy laptop soundcards too usually. pretty much all of them have it.

Microphone & speaker sound clear. Is it normal?

Hello all. I got my S5 two weeks ago and I love it. But one thing bugs me a bit about it though... I have read many comments on the Internet from owners of this phone that the microphone & speaker sounds muffled while the speaker on my phone sounds crystal clear (the same as on my HTC One M7) together with the microphone... I did a test call & the person told me that they hear no difference between this phone & my HTC... Is this good, or should I be worried about a popped membrane on both parts?
P.S. This phone was bought used
You're worried there is a fault because your phone is working normally with clear audio?
Don't you think the guys who are complaining of muffled audio are the ones with the fault?

I actually thought, that the muffled audio is correct because of the waterproof membranes to protect them... But good to know that it's the other way around [emoji4]
No muffled audio on mine, there is a clarity setting you can play with in call settings, with Adapt sound, Soft Sound, Clear Sound, and Off
Open the dialer and hit the 3 dots menu > settings
Mine can be used for everything but making calls. What ROM you running that works so well?
