Hey all I went swimming yesterday and forgot to take my phone out. It spent 5 mins under water. Im very tech savy and knew to put in a bowl of rice and let sit for 24 hours. Put phone back together and it booted up!! Heres the problem and question I have.
Problem is everything on phone works but the touch screnn (power, volume up and down, settings and go back buttons) I get notifications from Facebook and when I hit the goback or settings button or power phone on it vibrates.
Question is since everything on screen works ( meaning it shows all icons that are turned on and shows me my custome background and apps) can I just replace the digitizer or is it one piece with the screen and I have to replace both?
Any help would be deeply apprechiated as I dont have $650 to buy a replacement phone

Oh btw I did a hard reset to the boot menu and did a wiping of the cach and all as well as a factory erase and reset. When the phone resets it takes me to the Samsung set up page but I cant do anything as the touchscreen doesnt respond to me touching it over the next tab

The amoled is damaged... surprising as it passes many water tests, you were just unlucky im sorry :\
So the phone powers on, and you say it boots, to samsung, you are talking about the OS right, and then it becomes un-responsive?

Originally it booted all the way to my home screen, meaning the OS fully loaded. Then when the touchscreen didnt respond I decided maybe it would be best to do a full data wipe and factory install. I figured since 90% of the phone did comback and work I thought a factory restart. Would fix the touch sensitivity. So when I did that it took me to a set up screen for my phone, asking me location and language settings. I cant continue past that point because the screen is unresponsive. However I suspect if I could get past that point the phone would fully boot as it did the 15 times prior to the wiping of data and factory reset option I choose.
I hope this helps you, Im doing my best to explain everything in as much detail as possible
Thanks for helping me

Does the touchscreen work AT ALL ?
If you have the balls or know how I would disassemble the device to check screen/digitizer connections. There are several youtube videos showing instructions.

Very good possibility replacing the digitizer alone would do it. I would also highly recommend cleaning all battery terminals, circuit boards and metal parts with alcohol and a qtip to prevent corrosion.

If you are willing I would try craigslist to see if you find one that may have a cracked screen or been dropped where you could swap parts. If not a quick google search will give you several options. You will probably be looking around 250 for a factory digitizer. Good luck

Ill do that, hey thx again man, heck 250 a lot better than 599 lol
The problem is you don't know if it stops at that 250. There's no guarantee the phone will work reliably for months/years after such incident. You should clean it thoroughly (perhaps by somebody (service center?), who know how to do it properly) to avoid/lessen the risk of any (further?) corrosion inside.
Good luck.

Hey guys...
So, I have my Desire Z since about 4 weeks and nothing went wrong with it.
Really NOTHING bad happened, it didn't fall on the floor, didn't fall into water, etc etc.
So this afternoon I unlocked it and suddenly I got a blank grey screen.(worked perfect in the morning) The phone did react to my power up/on button, but I couldn't see what I was doing. Also the touchscreen worked, because I could unlock it (I heard the unlock noise) but I only get a blank grey screen.
I tried Bootloader and Battery pull. Also I took out my SD/SIM/Battery and just blow through the whole phone but nothing want to happen:-(
By the way, my phone is fully rooted and running on Cyanogenmod7 since 5 days. Everything worked perfect until this afternoon...
EDIT:
Looks just like this http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f368/forthcomingtangent/DSCI1196.jpg
C'mon guys:-(
So is it grey from bootup till it gets to the rom or can you see your boot splash screen and whatnot?

Yes, when I boot it up it's grey, I notice that it's still working because I get the bootup noise. So I can see nothing. But what I noticed is that the grey screen gets a kinda bluegrey screen while the cyanogenmod7 boot animation(the loop)
Sounds like a hardware issue to me, I'd send it in for warranty if I could. Plus, with your screen being the issue I doubt they would check for something like S-off or anything like that
sounds to me like the ribbon cable for the screen has either broken or not placed in its socket properly, does it make a difference when the keyboard is open? try opening it and closing it a few times... watch the screen. otherwise it could be a fault with the screen board or the screen itself
i would try and claim off warrenty or insurance
No it does no difference when the keybaord is open:-(
Problem at the whole thing is, that I have no warranty because I bought it at amazon.com
you either have to see how much htc will charge to repair it, or take it apart yourself and just check the cables... if any are loose then refit them... or buy a new screen, vga board and ribbon cable and fit it
How much would the last option cost?
And how much do you guys think HTC will chare to repair it?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OEM-SLIDE-FLE...944?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a10708cb8
something like that if its the ribbon cable.... but that gives you the whole kit
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Touch-Screen-...K_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2a0fd454a5
thats the digitizer but i dont think youll need that but just in case
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-GENUINE-H...K_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2eb3f529d0
thats the screen
but in fairness your better off taking it to a repair shop and getting a price... if you havnt got a warrenty then you dont have to worry about loosing one
Wow thanks, you're really helping me.
So I found a warranty document, since I bought it over amazon.com from another seller(mobilejoker) and it says that they'll repair me my device if it is defect and not my fault. But they also charge 40$ if it's an obvious damage made by myself. Well, I don't know, it wasn't my fault right? I mean it's not like it dropped in water or fell on the floor.
looks to me like its the ribbon cable or the vga board for the screen, as long as you havnt dropped it in liquid, on the ground or opened it up then it cant be your fault... id go with the warrenty first before you open it up
Hit the thanks button please matey
Done
And thanks again for your help.
alrite glad i could help, if you get stuck or if the warrenty doesnt work come back
hey guys I'm having a very similar issue on my phone, I bought a screen on ebay from a USA seller, as well as a flex cable cus both were damaged in my phone. I've got both of those installed and the phone boots up, gives off noises and vibrates like his did, but no video. Backlight lights up, but just black. I've been googling a lot and apparently the grey screen is just a precursor to what I have. Where exactly is the VGA board? is it on the main logic board? does it need a reflow like some laptop chipsets?
Hey guys I just thought I give you a quick update.
So I got my device back, it's working perfect and I didn't have to pay anything for it.
I'm just a bit confused, because my phone now is totally unrooted, and I always thought that root hurts your warranty.
Anyways, thanks for your help!!

Either they gave you a new phone or...
They replaced the screen (or samaged parts) and wiped or perhaps upgraded to newest stock.
Do you still have all your info and apps that were previously on it?
What version of android does it show in about, and which hboot do you have now?

I don't have any problems with rooting again, I was just saying that I was confused that I got my device repaired for free, although they unrooted my phone.
The phone definitely boots up because the lights on the buttons flash on then turn off after some time. The keyboard also lights up. You can tell the backlight turns on on the screen, but there is no picture.
Anyone have any idea about what I should do? Thinking about trying to restore to a stock Tom somehow tonight. Then I'm thinking about looking for screen replacements.
I was curious if anyone has had this issue before.
Update 07/14/11
So I got the screen and switched the old one out for the new one. This one also only has the backlight turning on, but I noticed when I put a part back on, there was a little bump in the middle of the phone. Haven't had a chance to fix it, but I noticed it's a piece hitting this rubber piece that seems to "transport" the sound for the mic from the bottom of the phone to the actual microphone module within the phone.
Removed that rubber piece, and I'll try installing it later. I was getting some blue and red visible in the middle of the phone. Anyone know what's wrong?

How sure are you it's the LCD screen? Replacement screens cost more than what I bought the phone for...lol
it's mostly the physical connection to the screen.
and on your note about it costing more than what you bought the phone for... there are tons of parts on the phone that will cost more than 30bucks. not much you can do about that since you got it non fully functional.

Never had to do it myself, but there is a cable connecting the two parts of the phone. That is usually where this problem originates from. It's not easy to fix though if your not familiar with fixing electronics from what i have seen.

I've taken apart my laptop completely and put it back together before. Completely as in taking the lcd off and different chips and wireless modules and stuff. So I completely tore apart the phone, got to the point where if I had another LCD screen, I could have easily switched it out. But I don't, so I just put it all back together. I really hope this new LCD will fix the issue. I really hope it's not some other motherboard issue. If all else fails, it goes up on eBay for $70-$100 as is for the phone. If I fix it, I just got myself a phone that goes for $200 used for only $57.
sure. goodluck with it. if you can do it then you're all set. good luck

Sorry. After some searching on eBay, I found some sellers selling it for a few dollars less than 30, e.g. 27.
But I decided to go with a seller who sold more than 200, who claims the screen is an OEM screen, and who is top rated. He sells his for $32. Which makes my phone $62 after all is said and done.
The housing has some scratches on the top and bottom though, which decreases the value a bit, but hey, if it works I'll probably keep it as a backup. Currently have the HD2, but I got a Vibrant with original box and accessories for $100, so I think I'm going to sell the HD2.
That was kinda off topic, sorry
LCD screen should be here by the 13th.

I don't own a G2 but I still think this could be a similar issue to what we get over here on the HTC Droid Incredible. First, what makes you believe its still a screen issue if it lit but just didn't throw picture? Usually thats the symptom of having the wrong recovery version for the device hardware version. Normally for us what happens is we will get somebody who is new and rooting for the first time and they'll end up flashing the wrong recovery or freak out because they don't realize the root process takes a little while and yank the cord. End result being exactly what you've explained above. Phone starts but no screen. So we end up having them do the ruu or a second option which we call a "blind install" where you drop whatever your p file(ours is PB31IMG.zip) so whatever it is for the G2 drop that on the SD and reboot to hboot and do the update process by simply knowing how long to wait between key presses and what keys to hit without useing the screen. Its a unique process and all very magical. Haven't lost a single Inc yet because of this issue.
Anyways bud just a thought...

It doesn't seem to be a ROM issue.
Update 7/18: Sold the G2 on eBay and still made a good lump of money. I was very happy, until another G2 popped up with the same exact issue. Got it for a steal as well, and I tried the OEM screen I got from eBay, and it was still having issues, and it seems to cause the phone to overheat while charging. Definitely a defective screen and someones getting a great deal on a decent condition G2 because I already took the payment after I figured it was the screen I got.
I'm going to try to get a replacement from the guy that sold it to me on eBay, but I already left him positive feedback thinking it was the phone's fault.
Will update probably late July or early August when all of this gets sorted out.
TL;DR: bought 2nd g2 with same issue, turns out replacement screen didn't work in the 2nd g2, too late to not sell the first g2, getting another replacement screen to fix 2nd g2. First g2 was in better condition though =|

Any ideas on how to get them working again, I think I might try a bit of surgery tomorrow morning. But any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I am a bit newb on Samsungs as my handsets have been all HTC, so hopefully I don't make it worse.

power off phone
pull out battery
GRAB THIS STUFF : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper tar file in pit and the .pda file in pda in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers

really strange... since these buttons and the screen are the same digitizer piece, i THINK if there is no software solution, you will need to replace the digitizer. on ebay you will find it for 20 dollars, not expensive but you will NEED an professional to replace it, believe me, i tried and its hard as hell.
But, if you have money to spend... you can buy the lcd+digitizer set and replace yourself, for about 130 usd

I am guessing that the connector might have come loose, I will have to do some surgery on the Vibrant tomorrow to check it out. I am guessing that because none of the buttons work it is going to be a connector, and going by a tear down video i just watched I am hoping that this means I won't have to go through the whole screen removal thing, cause that looks long and arduous!!
Hopefully it's just a connector!!!!
hmm sounds like driver/firmware issues. the capacitive buttons actually have seperate firmware. did the owner of the device try updating screen drivers/firmware via operator codes or using an app like sgs toolbox etc? i'm using miui so i can't give you instructions on how i fixed the problem for myself when i accidently tried updating screen firmware. but i will say ODIN didn't do squat for me. if you have an app like sgs tools/toolbox on that vibrant find the operator code for maintenance/tech and screen firmware and try updating/reverting and see if it fixes the issue. Ben about 4 months otherwise i'd be more specific sorry.

Nah her phone was in her bag, she pulled it out and the buttons were not working. She doesn't know how to update or anything, and no one had tried updating or anything for 5 months.
Samsungs are so different to HTC, which is what I use that I am struggling to get my head around the different methods of doing stuff on it. I will try to find some drivers or something and go from there. Stupid Samsung releasing so many different versions of the Galaxy S!!
The big issue is that the Galaxy S here in Australia is so different, and the owner of the phone is visiting from America, so it's the Vibrant, so I basically gotta find out info myself, not sure anyone in Australia can help!!!
Is this the thread you are talking about... I am not sure on how you used the code to fix the problem...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854725
I entered the code into dialer and the info was given to me:
Phone's Touch key FW version :0xd
Part's Touch key FW version: 0xd
I pressed the "Touch key FW update" button and it did it's thing telling "passed" at the end but still no love on getting the keys working again.
The lights for the keys all work, but they buttons do not actually do anything... sigh...
to get to those buttons you have to separate digitizer from LCD and this is the hardest part to do since they are taped together. I used hair blower to heat it up and slowly I mean very slowly was pulling them apart. At one point I almost gave up but next day tried again and it came apart.

OK so fixing this is beyond me and no one in Australia has the Vibrant to get parts from....
sooooo.... Is there anyone on here who would be willing to fix this for me? I am prepared to pay!!! Let me know if there is anyone who wants to have a look at this, cause my chances of getting this done in Australia is quite low!!!
I have taken apart quite a few various phones to replace digitizers and such. From experience I can say that even if all the parts are able to be separated with heat they will never go back together quite as good as stock. Also if you do this please do not use a large heat gun as they will get waaay too hot. we have heat pumps with a temperature adjustment that we use here. The lowest setting they have is 100C. I generally set them at 150-175C to remove digitizers.
seeing as how the entire assembly for this phone is around 130 why doesn't she just get a new one with her insurance if she has it? The deposit on an insurance claim for T-Mobile is 130 for me so it is the same financial investment either way.
If she does decide to repair the phone when she gets back to the states I would be willing to help. I do repair various phones and whatnot regularly although most of what comes through here are iPhones (idiot phones). i am in Chicago, but we regularly have phones and laptops shipped to us to repair.
I only found this thread because my buttons just stopped working. A reboot brought them back though.
I hope all works out for her either way.
Ordered new button things from ebay and watched few videos on dismantling and repair of the vibrant then repaired it myself.
All good now! Everything works 100%

Its not hard at all I saw a couple of vids on disassembling the vibrant and the touch keys are easy
I think if you Google" install ffc on vibrant video" it should pull up
Lol.. thanks for the reply... I figured it out . Ribbon was cut slightly.. replaced it and now good as new

I actually think i'm going to either:
-bring my samsung back for fixing
-sell my samsung and buy a more reliable phone
-cry in a corner.
I've had the home button problems since a few months or so...
Sometimes it won't react at all when i press it, sometimes it brings up the voice control, sometimes it'll lag for 2 seconds...
I tried a factory reset, tried updating, tried uninstalling voice apps and nothing works...
If anyone has any tips i don't know of please let me know before i send it for replacement because this is unacceptable on a €600 phone.
Any help is appreciated
You may have dusts stuck under the button. Try this trick I used to loosen my iPhone's home button:
1) turn the phone upside down
2) tap the button with your finger nail a few times firmly (but not very hard as it can damage the circuitry underneath)
3) wipe the edges of the button with a moist tissue or cloth
4) wipe the button dry with a dry tissue or cloth
are you serious...?

True but maybe blowing it a little or a light vac may help disperse any particles if thats the cause mate
Yep, the home button really is ****ing crap. Mine doesn't work at all since month. I found a work around (using a volume button as home button, but its a shame for samsung)
I tried to send in it but they told me that it's a moisture damage (a lie if you would ask me) and they aren't able to repair it even if i'd pay for it.
So my next phone will have as few moving parts as possible.

i think i would sell mine if they sent it back for that reason
yeah, a blow always help. at least for moral.
but depends on who is giving to who the blow
now seriously, mine got including in my daughter's hands while she was eating so a lot of moisture god onto the button and it's still working.
and by the way, they are forced by the law to fix it, at least for money, because the law, at least in UE is forcing them to offer post warranty support.
Basically they will change the mother board.
I had the same issue with stock rom reflashed with oxygen and miui and not experienced it since, coincidence maybe?

Totally.
My iphone's home button stopped responding after about 6 months and I was about to return it for replacement. The button's responsiveness is still like new to this day after "cleaning" - the unit is 15 months old and counting.
sometimes it'll lag for 2 seconds...
This case is normal because Samsung is code home btn to wait for double click (so it can bring up a voice command) so it have a delay time to wait for it.
Btw you can disable it by using jkay to disable home btn double click.
Had the same issue as OP.
I went to the customer care center here and complained (which was a pain in the azz), then finally stood there until they reacted. Overall, they ordered a new screen and took care of it.
It took about 5 days for it to be replaced. I had the device until then of course.
Try button saviour from the market.

If you bought the phone in the UK you are protected by the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which you should mention to the retailer. If this isn't the case I'm sure there are repair shops that could fit a new button relatively cheaply, that is if the blow job trick doesn't work
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
turn the device off, remove the battery and spray a bit of contact cleaner on the home button gaps.. it should work then
15 months..? My iphone's been goin' for almost 40...<3 jb 3g
As far as the topic goes, I heard about this lumia 800 recently...
My touchscreen becomes unresponsive after holding down the power button to get to the Phone Options where the Silent mode, Airplane mode, Choose Profile, Screenshot, Reboot , and Power Off options are located. The touch screen becomes unresponsive, I have to power off the screen for a few seconds and turn it back on and the touch screen will work again. It just started doing this 2 weeks ago. I have tried different roms and no difference. I have performed task 29 no difference, even after fresh installation of roms with no other apps installed
Im suspecting a worn digitizer but not sure because it only does it after phone opentions menu is opened, other than that the touchscreen works fine. Than again not sure if its a rom issue because it does it with different roms even older ones i never had problems before. I just know how to flash roms and basic stuff and not that far advanced
By the way I have the latest MGLDR, and recovery, have performed task 29 and even tried it with the SD card out and same result
Any help would be greatly appriciated especially if you have had this exact problem please i want to hear from you
Thank you
Broken flat cable from digitizer to mainboard.I had the same problem.
Was it expensive to fix? Or did you fix it yourself? Did you replace the cable, digitizer or just the cable? And thanks for the help

Sure he meant this, in order to make sense!
Solution: another touchscreen/digitizer or even better(but more expensive) new combo(lcd+touchscreen/digitizer)!
I have noticed that after it boots it will let me select an option from the the phone option menu but only when it is fresh of a boot, once the phone settles after a minute or two it's when the problem starts
For the meantime I'm using Quick Boot app from the market since that is the only thing it affects. I will check for prices to replace digitizer. I have seen the digitizers alone on Ebay going got around 10 bucks but I'm scared of the installation lol. I'm going to check the phone repair shop and check how they charge. If it's too much I'll just live with it since the Quick Boot app is working fine.
Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it and hopefully it can help somebody else with the exact problem

Well took it to a local repair shop and guy told me the wires looked good and said maybe the motherboard was going out, well if it is guess I'll use my wife's Samsung Vibrant which I must say has never had any problems with, until its time for a contract renewal for me

I highly doubt the board is bad. I already took mine apart, a collection of dust and dirt causes the end button to mess up the contacts. Your board is probably fine if you aren't experiencing overheating or any other symptoms, no offence, he probably just wanted more work to do so they could charge you more. I've done some computer repairs for family and friends and it's ridiculous the bull that repair stores throw at you

I'm not experiencing overheating issues, the guy didn't charge and said he didn't have another motherboard to swap out with and test. He didn't charge me anything at least. I know its ridiculous how much they charge sometimes but its out of warranty so I don't have much choice and I'm scared to take it apart and damage something else but I have no other choice now lol. Did you look at a video before you took your apart?
Also was your phone doing the exact same thing? It does make sense it could be a dirty contact, I work ata Chevy dealer and bad contacts sometimes do weird things but sometimes at the lock screen the touch screen won't work also and I have to turn of t the screen for it to work

Lol thanks I meant after I take the cover off, I was able to take the plastic buttons of but I didn't see much dust, I **** a little compressed air but that's all, how did you clean up the actual buttons?
Well I put it back together after blew the buttons but for a little while the touchscreen was not working at all, I rebooted a few times and it started working but same problem
Just wanted to know how you cleaned the buttons if I'm missing something. I really want to fix it because I don't to use my wife HD2, I'll never hear the end of it from her because I always tell her phone is better lol

Lol. what cover are you talking about? i just followed the one video and blew compressed air through ever little nook and crany. It didnt fix it completely as im not too worried about it since my digitizer is shattered. So i'll be more worried about it once i get a new digitizer. But just follow one of the videos on youtube, they take the thing apart all the way down to individual parts.
Hey use attached apk, and remap one of your other buttons to function as the power button. I have mine set to the green button since i dont use it anyhow. That way the endkey doesnt get used so much. It works perfectly. once i get a new display im gonna rig a way to keep this from happening again.

thanks but now my touchscreen does not work at all now. Maybe it was just the digitizer going bad in my phone. I'm using a Samsung Vibrant which in my opinion sucks, I just got it rooted, now I need install CM7, I miss my HD2 so much. I think I'm just going to order a digitizer from Ebay and try to install myself
damn the HD2 phone owners have so many rom choices compared to this vibrant

Ha, have you tried rebooting the HD2? If i hit the end key, it stops working completely, but after a reboot it works again. So far it hasnt stopped working since i remapped the green key to be power key. And yeah i had to use my Touch Pro 2 until i finally got an HD2. I cant wait to get a job and get an SGS2 though. Thats an amazing phone.
