There's no hardware keys to press on the OUYA to get it to boot into fastboot/recovery mode. They seem to think it is a tiny minority that they shouldn't have to care about, but I don't especially feel like bricking my device. I figured I'd try to drum up a little more support on XDA.

You just use a USB keyboard for the hardware keys.
Or download a Reboot into recovery app.
I'm not sure how Ouya could resolve this unless you are requesting a feature set on the next wave of hardware.
As far as I know there are already several custom ROMs and recovery solutions?

Thanks for the links. Didn't realize that thread was about the same thing because the title was a bit misleading.

From what I understand, the USB keyboard can only be used to crash the startup into recovery using the sysreq key trick, but if it can't get past the init.d file, you're stuck in NVflash mode without the Secure Boot Key, essentially bricking your device. So now our only real hope is that OUYA changes their mind and gives us the SBK, or some sympathetic dev from their camp leaks them.
Ahhh. I didn't know it basically crashes your system.
Oddly the Ouya is the only device I don't want to hack. I don't see anything advantageous about flashing anything.
I'd be curious to know what Ouya says. They're box is hackable but I'm not sure if they would like people flashing to other ROMs that doesn't use their market.

you guys do know that some apps like quickboot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot&hl=en) can boot your Ouya into recovery mode? What I would like to see is getting the SBK like TopherBarnett suggested so that at least we can all be guaranteed our Ouya won't get bricked permanently because the android community is innately tinkerers when it comes to android softmods and customization.

How about bugfixes? How about a way to continue using the device three years down as a media player even after OUYA 2017 is out and the first revision of the console is increasingly abandoned? How about a way to back up your games and saves? Maybe even just a Link2SD type solution for the increasingly meager seeming 8GB internal storage?
Look, I'm in the same boat as you--the OUYA is the first Android device that I've owned where I haven't really felt a burning need to root and install a custom rom on it as soon as I could. Most of my Android devices haven't lasted a week before I had them rooted, using a custom recovery and a custom rom without the OEM crapware infested sludge slowing me down. The OUYA is the only one where I've actually used the defaults and said to myself, "Yeah, I could learn to really like this..."
Only there are some outstanding bugs that simply don't seem to be a priority and aren't getting fixed. The OUYA team has demonstrated an unwillingness to openness and an inability to communicate to its users. In the past whenever I had these types of issues, it was the community which solved most of my issues, long after the manufacturer had moved on to seek new dollars. The only reason I bought the OUYA was because of the promised openness of the console and the ability to use it with custom firmwares.
So, despite being mostly happy with my purchase I still want the promised openness that I bought the OUYA for in the first place, even if I do like the current looks of the software and want to stay as stock as possible. Otherwise there will be many who like myself will simply not bother with the next iteration of the console and no one will need to worry about what the 2017 edition OUYA looks like because there won't be one.
--bornagainpenguin
I agree but I feel this article is being a little too harsh. Ouya people aren't stupid. They know whats up with the hardcore guys like us. It's not even been out a month (July 4th or something). I'm sure they are balls to the wall with getting devs on board and bug fixes and just making the thing run properly for the 95% of people who use it the way it was intended.
Once they get their crap together and things start to begin flowing naturally and they find a little free time, they might think up something.
Has anyone tried Rom Manager or anything? There has to be some way to Reboot into Recovery other then a hardware solution.
But I just don't get it. There IS a way to hack this thing... but people are complaining that it's a little dicey. Try hacking a Xbox by taking the whole thing apart and flashing a firmware to the disc drive which requires a special PC adapter. BrickCentral if something were to go wrong. Killing your device is a taken risk when you do anything done here.
I really can't see Ouya doing anything about this. If they go out of their way to make it easy to run stock android, then it might turn Ouya devs off. Perhaps once the unit is EOL, they'll provide a final rom with some extra recovery options.

There are a number of ways to boot into recovery: adb, third party apps like Quick Boot, terminal emulators. But there is currently no way to do it through hardware.
Essentially, we're missing the equivalent of "volume up+power" most of us are familiar with from rooting other devices. This makes soft bricks pretty much the same as hard bricks. And that's the problem.

Like Oscar_david pointed out... these are all software solutions to a hardware problem....
IF, for example, you flash an improper kernel or something goes haywire enough to cause it not to boot far enough in to atleast enable adb... you have a softbrick that can NOT be fixed by any software solution.
Sadly the real solution is one we probably will never get... and that's via unlocked bootloader or the keys so we can flash from bootrom recovery
It's mad that the OUYA guys omitted a hardware key from their design - I can't think of any other Android arm SoC based mini computer that doesn't have a pin hole button to enter recovery. All the mini stick computers like the mk802 and Google TV boxes like Pivos have this feature...
That's the thing--I could have bought a Pivos, but didn't because I wanted to have the best of both worlds and play games as well as videos. I thought the OUYA would offer that to me, but the longer it takes to fix things the less hopeful I become.

There is a big problem on the horizon.....
Lovefilm and Sky Go on my iPad have stopped working due to my jailbreak...
Turns out Sky Go doesnt work on Rooted Android either!
As much as i hate Sky as a company we dont have much choice in the UK if you want some decent channels on TV. I dont even use their app that much but this trend seems to be catching on...
More and more apps are refusing to run on Jailbroken iOS and the same will be happening on Android soon enough. They are also actively patching any work arounds or hacks to stop people running apps on Rooted or JB devices.
i really hope some of the talented people who code for android can find a good solution to this problem or even better Google comes out and tells the world that Rooters should not lose out like this.
If we can make it so much work for them to keep fixing the holes then maybe they will get fed up with trying to patch them.
Because if we dont then more and more apps will follow!

There are some apps out there that will temp unroot your phone so apps like that will work. then you just restore it(OTA rootkeeper allows this). Also I think Siyah kernel supports temp unrooting

Siyah kernel does support temp unrooting, but somehow Sky Go still knows your phone is rooted, and it won't work. So far from the reading I have done there is no solution to this other than to flash back to a stock unrooted firmware.
I don't think it will become the rule on android, because there are to many apps that even need root, but at ios, probably because jailbreak is the only possibility to get, at least partially, out of their ecosystem.

As far as I know. Sky Go has gotten around everything so far.
I see not to far in the future a situation where you have to either root and lose lots of apps you use or lose the root lose lots of apps you use.
That's a crap situation for sure

Sky have invested a heck of a lot of time and money to making the latest Sky Go apps very very hard to hack!
They now do a lot of checking on their severs which makes it impossible for us to hack around.
I am sorry but I don't think we will ever get sky go working properly with root, and as soon as we did sky would update the app to fix the loophole.
Google won't do anything because rooted android isn't standard android. The android platform isn't built like windows or OS X, where the default is the user having root available.
Therefore security (DRM in particular) on those platforms is built with that in mind. Android isn't.
Also, while you might have the best of intentions there are plenty of root-users who would use it to copy content offline, trick it into thinking you have a subscription whe you don't etc.

This sux for sure.
On iPad they sandboxed the app in its own virtual environment. could this trick it into think its running on unrooted firmware?
I can't see how there is no way around this. If the app tests root, deny it, if it scans for root binaries, change/rename them. What am I missing here? Is there some other level of detection somewhere?

You cant get the content without a subscription anyway, the problem has been people UDID spoofing and getting more active devices than they are allowed. Its a joke that they limit this anyway they should just make it so you can only be logged in on 2 devices at any one time using traditional methods like IP address and IMEI

The Sky Go app is a bastard
This is a list of some of the things it checks (but not all)
- Root binaries
- Root App
- Phone model
- Android version
- Custom Recovery
- Custom Kernels
- IMEI checks (stops wifi-only tablets..)
The first 4 are simple to overcome, the last three cause major issues!

the Apple skygo app works differently, it doesn't check for IMEI.
wifi-only android tablets do not have IMEI numbers so it will always fail this check

Thats the thing, we (me and two others who worked on hacking this app) couldn't work it out! But it definitely was detecting it, we tried it on Samsung and HTC devices with no root and stock kernel but with a custom recovery and sky go stopped worked, change back to stock recovery and the app works again but we could not find any code that checked it.
On most devices to get it to work you need a stock based rom, stock recovery (unless recovery is part of kernel like S2) stock based kernel (ro.secure=1 must be set!) no or hidden root. You then need to make sure you fit the device or version checks, if you don't you need a hacked app that allows you to do this.
However the latest sky go apps do a sever side check for the apps signature (so you cannot decompile and recompile without changing this). So basically we can no longer do even the most basic of hacks.

After the aggravation of no flash support, multiple screen freezes, and the sometime slow buggy screen response. The screen is great for viewing though! I decided to just send it back. To be completely truthful I would not have bought it, when not supporting flash!! Reminds too much of Apple!! I hate when companies force me into, or in this case out of something I want just because they feel like it!! If they think it's a security risk, make it a user option! When you buy a router, do they force you to use encryption? No!! It's my tablet & I should be able to watch flash videos if I want!!
And before anyone starts saying, you can get around it by using firefox or dolphin browsers, you can't! At least not completely, they are buggy!
Just want to see if any others, traded it in so to speak!!

Same boat as you, i had it for a while then gave it back. I ended up sticking with my infinity.
Mmm... Flash is no longer supported mate all across the tablet/mobile world. Besides if your not willing to side load the flash apk then I suggest you go buy a laptop. Flash is buggy anyways but for me flash is nice on my N10. I Can watch my Hulu through the browser. If you want flash you got to do a little work to get it working. Just like any android tablet nowadays. The issues you stated can you be a bit more specific? I haven't had any problems on performance on this thing. Browsing is very quick. Just opening apps and loading my gmail is very fast compared to the Infinity I had. Even using ttorrent, I can actually download a 3gig HD movie without sacrificing performance. No laggyness at all compared to other previous tablets I've owned.

I really don't understand how Flash Player is so important enough to justify a device purchase decision, especially since it's becoming obsolete... Might just be my browsing habits, but there are 2 sites total that I use that would be "somewhat" pointless without flash player. Just 2. And those 2 sites I could care less about on a tablet (one of the sites is YouTube; which has a standalone app on Android lol)
So in a few months when either all Android tablets are updated and no longer support flash, or your tablet that does, is completely outdated, you are just going to NOT own a tablet ..
At least that is what I get from your "reasons".
Honestly you don't have to justify returning the tablet, if you can't take change I suggest you move to the north pole or something where pretty much nothing changes.
These posts about "Why I don't like the N10" or "Why I am too lazy to sideload flash" or " X tablet is Better than Y tablet" are REALLY REALLY getting old ..
I am in these forums because I own said device, not because I want to talk about how I returned it, or how much I hate it ..
Should be a rule if you don't own the device and are not a developer, leave said forum.

It looks as though you don't have any clue what you are talking about. The nexus 10 definitely supports flash. You don't need anything but the flash.apk to use it on any browser. It is the users choice to use it or not. And please do a little research next time before you try and slander or put down a company (Google) for something that they have nothing to do with. It's Adobe that doesn't support flash on the mobile platform. Not Google. All you would've needed to do is take 11 seconds to sideload one app and you have flash. Either way. If you don't have this tablet, what does your opinion of it matter here in the Nexus 10 forums? It doesn't. Move along to the next device, complain about that one, and waste more space in another forum with your opinions.

Just use puffin browser whenever you need flash. It loads the content on remote servers then sends it back to you. It can even emulate a touch pad or a game controller for flash gaming.
It works on iOS too if you care about that.

I had an Infinity for two months before I got the N10. Each person's experience is different but my Infinity experience was laggy and frustrating. I found myself rebooting frequently trying to make it speedy. I disabled most of the Asus stuff, it just didn't "feel" like a great experience. I will say Asus is on top of updates and the bloatware is minimal by comparison to other non-Nexus tablets, of course.
The N10, for me, is just smooth. Living with the N10 is just better for me.
No one had an answer last time I asked, does anyone know now if there is a fix for flash/browser yet, so when I hit full screen it doesn't crash the browser? I tried all of them, they all do it

Developer huh?? Like I said flash is buggy on the nexus 10! I did side load the apk flash pack & it only works partially!! Go to any site that uses flowplayer to show flash, hit the full screen button & the 10's screen goes black & does a partial lock up!! The only way you can move off that screen now is hit the home button!! And its not the flowplayer program, because it works fine on my PC!! It will do the same thing on your 10 too, most likely!! Take your personal assumption & attack where it belongs, off a cliff!! My point was I don't like Google, Android, Adobe, or developers taking things away just because they feel like it!! Remember the software companies work for the public, not the other way around!!
If I knew flash would not work properly, as i stated before. I would not have bought it to begin with!! I believed the developers that there is a workaround, there's not!! At least not one that works 100%.

But I guess you don't need it now since you've returned your N10. Its unfortunate because its a great tablet.

Question for OP, did you pay a restocking fee? When I swapped my 16gigger with 32 it was like a 15% fee!
Back on topic though, I guess I just was one of those users that got a bad tf700 and had a terrible experience. My N10 has been running superbly. The only reason I doubt my assumption is b/c I went through 3 tf201's before finally giving up and waiting on the tf700.

I believe I will be charged the 15% restocking fee, credit not issued yet. Apple customer service is way better in that regard. I think in the future, I will wait to see the device in a retail store first, save time & trouble on both ends!

So then... what mobile platform are you going to buy in a year or two? Plus, it's the mobile Flash player that's causing the problems. That's purely Adobe's fault for dropping it.
I can tell that your "multiple screen freezes, and the sometime slow buggy screen response" are from fullscreening Flowplayer and being unable to get out. You make it sound like a generalization throughout the whole device.
Anyway, were you talking about this?

Yes sideloading will not give you 100% especially if your running stock and not rooted.

Thanks for the helpful response, unlike some other members that tell me I can't believe my own eyes!! Mine is heading back already but this may help others with the same problem!! Personally, I like flash & wish it would stick around. I take offense when others tell me what I can & can't have, especially when I'm paying them & they're not paying me!!
So the latest thread I could find regarding OTG support was a couple weeks old now and I figured I'd ask around in case there were any new developments on the subject.
Back in November when I bought the phone I thought it supported USB devices but now, according to some sources, it looks like google removed this feature from the ads back in early December. Needless to say I hadn't gone back and re-read the ads since I purchased the phone in November so I was completely unaware that this feature had been 'removed' since I bought my phone.
My problem is that I picked up a wired gameklip in anticipation of using it on a few flights that I have in January, but now with the lack of OTG/host mode support it looks like I won't be able to use the PS3 controller with the N4 unless I root and use a bluetooth connection, which could be problematic on a flight.
While I know that many people do use bluetooth devices on planes w/o any problems I'd prefer to use a wired connection if at all possible. I do have an external power source that could provide power via a y-cable, assuming that is required, but have there been any updates WRT enabling OTG/host mode on the N4 in the first place?
Here is a kernel for the n7,not sure if its compatable or not.If you want to try it make sure you do a nandroid backup first.

I WOULD NOT FLASH THAT IT IS FOR THE NEXUS 7 (all caps because i can already tell flashing that would be bad news)
shame on you for linking random stuff knowing that some person who is inexperienced would probably flash anything they see.

Nah, this is why I'd be doing my research first. I had a feeling the N7 Kernel wouldn't play nice without some heavy modifications but figured I'd check around a bit and see if I was missing something... but thanks for pointing this out for others, it's obviously good info.
I'm new to rooting & ROMs with [recent] android devices but I've done plenty of stuff on old windows phone platforms (among others). Hell... I've written my own linux kernel before. Granted it was years ago in a school project and I probably couldn't do it again now if I tried... but I've done it :silly:
Agreed,I should have thought before posting the link. You can however post in the thread and see if the dev has plans for a specific n4 version of the kernel,he is a pretty goog guy.
My apologies

That's good for you (no sarcasm intended), reading is imperative but I'm pretty sure someone sees a link and automatically says "OOOOH MUST FLASH." It does happen to people and then they wonder why their phone isn't booting up.
@Kodiack99: It's okay. I wasn't really angry at you or anything but was more of a "dont flash it!!!"
Okay, I should start off by saying I have put hours into researching this myself. I've found things that are similar to my problem, but nothing that I feel truly accomplishes what I'm trying to do.
Here's my situation.
I just recently purchased a Nexus 7. It is currently running Android version 4.2.2
I am new to android, have done jailbreaking and stuff with iPhone, have no experience when it comes to android.
Here's my issue.
I essentially bought this device for one reason - its ability to run emulators at full speed.
Obviously, touch screen controls do not cut it. So logically, I wanted to use my Wiimote to connect and use as a controller on the device. However, as I'm sure it has been well documented, the new android update has disabled the function.
Without a controller, I can't play emulators. Without being able to play emulators, I essentially have a $250 paper weight.
I've heard of there being a possibility of downgrading my Nexus 7 back to a version that would be compatible with wiimotes.
Every tutorial I've looked at seems daunting and confusing. I've tried doing them, but run into problems where there is a step that was supposed to be done prior to doing the tutorial and I have no idea where it's coming from or what to do.
Essentially that is where I stand. I need to be able to use my wiimote on my Nexus device. I'm begging somebody to guide me, show me the way to downgrade my Nexus device that will walk me through from steps A-Z.
As I said, I have honestly put a lot of time and effort into researching and attempting to fix this problem myself. Unfortunately, I just haven't found, or rather lack the knowledge to find exactly what I'm looking for.
I would be incredibly appreciative of any help I can get. If you need any more information from me about the situation, ask and I shall supply you with what you need.
Thanks in advance guys and gals.

I can help firstly I would like to tell you that there is a far easier option that downgrading which is using a wireless ps3 controller. Fully compatible with 4.2.2 but if you would like to downgrade you must first:
Get a working adb/fastboot folder.
Unlock your bootloader via fastboot. (Warning: this will factory reset your tablet so back up everything you can)
Then flash a stock google 4.1.2 image.
Or alternatively you could :
Unlock your bootloader via fastboot.
Flash a custom recovery.
Flash a custom 4.1.2 rom from the development threads.
All 3 will give the desired effect just bump this thread with what option you want and I will guide you all the way

Any idea if it's possible to use multiple PS3 controller? Specifically on the N64 emulator. I'd use PS3 but I'm not sure if I can get multiple ones to work on the N64 emulator.
Plus I gotta get the adapter.

The wireless ps3 controllers (official) work with sixaxis controller and can map up to 4 at once, n64oid should be able to map them all as input devices you shouldn't need an adapter as far as I am aware. There is a sixaxis testing app on the market, give it a try and see how you get on should all be sweet though.

Well I think I have rooted my Mojo, so far so good. I have setup Nova Launcher as well. My phone and Mojo look almost alike
I of course have external Monitor 1920x1080 and I was expecting better imaging on the screen. I moved from a chromebook to the Mojo and thought the screen would be better - everything is so large. All my USB accessories (webcam, mic, headphones, usb hub, usb flash and speakers) fail to work. Replaced the mike and headphones to a 3.5 plug unit so I can hear sounds now.
I have tried to add multitasking to the Mojo, so I could do at least two things at once But I have not been successful yet
I am a Kixeye Battle Pirate Junkie - I have found that Puffin is the best I have for now to use with Battle Pirates (flash based). But have at least three problems with Puffin: (1.) Arrows keys will not work most of the time. (2.) Must Maximize screen to move around and Minimize to type text. Either Apple or Google screws us on the flash based games. (3.) Game does not fix on screen - on see a third of it without scrolling up and down.
So I come to you all to ask for suggestions, ideas, and comments. Example how to you have apps designed for the Mojo in mind. Some reason people hear "android" and all they think about is a tiny little screen that you touch to move stuff around with your finger...
I really need some Mojo friends to chat with :fingers-crossed:
Thanks Andy

Hello Unjustified Dev,
Do I understand that Marshmellow is out now??
What is RemixOS - will that help mojo's audio or sound?
I really need a Mojo Mentor to help me along since I can not get on Mojo's chat.
BTW should I be using this Tapatalk thing
I am afraid that my post are not getting seen or if anyone knows how frustrating to learn all this by trail and error and going back to square one.
I am also trying to figure out how to use this forum.

M is not released yet , but officially announced. RemixOS is a version of android modified for desktop experience which includes a sort of desktop window feature it will not change the sound at all. What's wrong with the Mojo's sound? I haven't ran stock so I can't comment on it.

I would flash the latest version. By googling supersu zip you will find a thread by chainfire with the download. If you install my TWRP you will be able to flash it from recovery. Honestly I can't say as I have not ran remixos yet which is why I'm trying to port it to see what's it all about. Currently I'm running on 5.1.1 CyanogenMod and it's way better than stock 4.2.2.

It sounds like this 5.1.1 is the cat's meow, so I will look into it If ya think Marshmallow will be a while before available on Mojo. The remixOS looks like it requires a touch screen in the videos maybe they have a work around for non touch screens.

The mojo unfortunately came out with android jellybean which is 2+ years old now and very limited compared to kitkat/lollypop.
The hardware is still great by todays standards.. it runs lollypop (CM12) with no problems.
Sadly madcatz never showed much love regarding the mojo.. they're probably now clearing old stock and putting it behind them as a mistake
So, there's never been much of a community here.. android 'microconsoles' were very niche and the mojo wasn't the cheapest (like ouya $99 junk)
@Unjustified Dev is the young man who gave us CM12 and androidTV for the mojo... a huge undertaking and he did it without even having the mojo.. very impressive
IS M.O.J.O. a Mistake, I hope not.

GWALDO,
Greeting from Missouri. I am enjoying my MOJO. I am very Interested in the CM12 Mod and the Android TV app as well. If @Unjustified Dev can or will help me apply them to my MOJO I would be very Glad to move to them. He has also mentioned REMIXOS which sound very exciting as well, and looking forward to appling it to my MOJO.
When I am not in Battle Pirates (Kixeye.com) I and constantly exploring the Android/MOJO world trying to learn all I can. I dearly miss the Chrome Browser with flash. It is required for Battle Pirates Currently I am using Puffin browser, there are so many problems. I do not know if it is the lack of a "true flash" browser, Abode, Android, MOJO or Kixeye problems. But I have not given up on Battle Pirates.
On that note this is another arena called "OCEANS AT WAR" it runs on UNITY and I have not been able to run that as of yet.
I have watched your videos on Youtube and enjoyed them, I feel sad that our MOJO community is so small and silent, I am always search for people to talk to about the MOJO and the Android experience. I have the chromebook and been down the path. I wanted to move to a "box" system, either Android or Chrome... I went with Android since my phone was an Android as well.

You should be able to download the latest Chrome browser just fine if you're still running the stock rom. Also you shouldnt need to do anything to get an audio from the HDMI cord, it should just work. Are you sure you have the volume turned up on your monitors speakers?
ATM it is working - I found out you MUST not have any kind of audio jack plugged in to the MOJO. ie an extension that splits the one jack into a spk and mic jack.

Hi,
Yeah, mojo users are similar to ouya user now I guess.. disappointed that their device is static (not going to change, well not officially anyway).
So you won't hear from the masses.. maybe when they have a problem with something
re speakers, I think HDMI splitters could work to split the sound to speakers?
Not sure tho.
re browser flash, this is what's recommend in their help:
http://madcatz.kayako.com/Knowledge...nded-method-for-viewing-flash-content-on-mojo
I don't know if it will work tho.
Regarding CM, it's not that hard if you have done it before.. like everything
I would suggest if you have an old android device to try changing the firmware on it before trying to do it on the mojo.. it's mostly the same process.. get the device in recovery mode and flash a new rom, reboot and it's done.
The mojo also needs a male to male usb to flash, or you can try rooting the mojo then using an app to install the new rom, some say it works, I haven't tried it.. anyway I did explain that in one of the videos lol
Yeah... been busy lately haven't made any videos.. oh and my website got stolen by my host (bigscoot).
They played a scam on me.. saying my site went over the bandwidth limit for 6 months and that I owed them hundreds of dollars.. the funny thing was I looked at their own logs and it showed nothing different for the 12months.. I had next to zero traffic anyway
Obviously, i didn't pay it and they didn't let me get my data, I did like my site :'( oh well
