Hi
I have a rooted Nexus S and have decided to go back to Stock from the ZuluZulu ROM I was using. I downloaded the Stock 2.3.3 and installed through ROM Manager. I wiped cache and dalvik.
On reboot the device was back to standard but it will not let me download all my apps. It has them all attempting to download and then after a while I get a batch noitification saying that the app install was unsuccessful.
Does anyone know what has happened and how it can be fixed?
I have tried to re-download Stock 2.3.3 from other sources but I don't know if the links I am using are broken but they say download unsuccessful.
Network signal is 3G and Wifi has been connected but with the same result...
Hope to hear from someone with the answers soon
Sometimes mass downloading, eg after an auto restore, will cause all apps to fail either installing or downloading. Try one by one.
Delete market cache. Make sure you wiped dalvik/cache at the right time.
If that doesn't fix it flash stock 2.3.4 in zip format via cwm recovery from here.
If that still doesn't fix it try flashing 2.3.X via Odin from here.
Thanks for your reply.
I have tried one by one but no luck.
I no longer have cwm and I have never heard of Odin.
By the looks of it I have lost root access, is that what you think?
Should I try and gain root again and get into cwm?
ok something strange has happened.
I have reflashed the superuser.zip through cwm (finally got it to work through a root method) and the phone is allowing me to download apps.
How can I now revert back to a stock rom without this happening again?
Really odd. I'm battling with the same thing tonight. Trying to go back to stock from CM7.1 nightlies. Wiped everything and tried a few different GRJ22 ROMs but they're all having this same problem.
If your having trouble flashing zip packed Roms via recovery/Rom manager, then you can always try Odin. Found on samfirmware (Firmware and Programs tabs in "Toolbox"). It's overwriting everything, even the bootloader if you want (careful!). You need to download Odin from that page plus the correct firmware for your device. Then just run Odin, apply the correct files (bootloader > bootloader, pda > pda, phone > modem, csc can remain empty (changes carrier info)), double check if only "auto reboot" and "f. reset time" are marked, "start".
> There are more indepth instructions on the forums that should be considered before trying!
I often have this issue too, not sure why.
Let me give you the timeline. A few days ago I rooted the device using the method outlined in this video. I verified my root status with Root Checker and my device was indeed successfully rooted. I installed BusyBox (basic) and TitaniumBackup Pro. Made a backup of my user apps+data to the external SD. I then downloaded Goomanager and used it to install the latest version of TWRP.
All of this was successful. I went into TWRP and created a NAND backup. I backed up: Boot, System, and Data. I did not back up EFS, Preload, Cache, or Recovery.
I performed a wipe and format of user data. Flashed to SlimBean, had some issues. Wiped. Flashed CM10.1. Again, some issues. I decided I'm going to wait a while for these roms to stabilize a bit before I try using any of them on a regular basis. I wiped and restored my original NAND backup of my stock rooted ROM. The restore appeared to go fine. I don't know if this will have anything to do with anything but I went ahead and ran a PRL and Profile update. The device was functioning okay until...
I noticed that the time was off. The lockscreen time was correct but the time in the upper right status bar was stuck at about an hour before. I decided I'd just try restarting the device to see if that fixed anything. Well when I did it wouldn't boot. I'd get stuck on the first Samsung Galaxy S4 logo screen. Took the battery out, waited, put it back in, restarted. Still... stuck on the logo screen. I tried booting into recovery (Vol. Up + Power). The black SGS4 logo would come up with a tiny blue notification in the upper left corner (Recovery Boot). Then the device would restart and get stuck at the SGS4 logo screen again.
Eventually I was able to get it to boot to TWRP (maybe I was just holding the power button too long?)
I wiped. It failed. I tried again. It worked. I recovered my CM10.1 setup and it's been working "okay" on CM10.1 ever since.
I want to get back to my stock rooted rom but I want to understand what happened first.

What version of TWRP were you on? If it was 2.5.0.3 then there's your culprit. That version of TWRP is known to have issues. You need to flash version 2.5.0.2 found here.......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480. Scroll down to install Alternate recovery and download the 2.5.0.2 .img file.
Once you've downloaded the file, go to your Goo Manager folder and delete the file there. Then paste the file you downloaded from the above link into that same folder. After that, open Goo Manager and go to Install Recovery Script. It should see the file you have in your folder and then download it from their server. Make SURE it says you are downloading 2.5.0.2. Once Goo does its thing, reboot into Recovery and make sure you're running the 2.5.0.2 version of TWRP. Now you can flash all you want because it will function properly. I would first download a stock rom and clear out any skeletons in the closet. Then go into TWRP and wipe EVERYTHING. This includes data, dalvik cache, cache, system and then factory reset as well 3 times each. MAKE SURE you don't delete the internal or external sd cards. Flash the stock rom, set it up how you wish, make a nand of that file( Include EFS and Preload because it can't hurt to be safe) and then flash whatever you like. You should be good to go.

Another question I have is what version of software/firmware are you on? Go to Settings/More/About Phone and check what your software and baseband versions are? If its MDC, then rooting via MotoChopper was a good method to use. If it says MDL, that could also be the reason why the phone was acting so quirky. There is a new method to rooting if you are on MDL and it's also found in Mudavo's thread found here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480
For the record. I was using the phone stock rooted for a week or so without any problems. I hadn't had any issues until after restoring the backup I made in TWRP. When I wiped prior to installing SlimBean/CM10.1 I did the standard auto-wipe AND I wiped data
Oh yeah. To answer your questions.
TWRP Version: 2.5.0.2
Software/Baseband versions: L720VPUAMDL
Earlier today I just tried wiping (default TWRP 2.5.0.2). Then restoring the backup again. This was so I could get you the information on what software/baseband version I was on. When the restore completed I went to reboot. The phone stuck on the SGS4 logo screen. I then rebooted in recovery and wiped as before and then I wiped data. The phone was then able to boot into the stock rooted rom. I have so far noticed the times being out of sync from the lock screen and the status bar. I reset the phone again. Stuck at SGS4 logo again.
My trouble getting back into TWRP was my own fault. I was holding the buttons down too long. I can get back into TWRP no problem.
So. What are my options at this point? I would like to be on the latest stock everything... with root and stock wireless tether enabled. The way I was. If I can't restore my backup then I'm going to have to reflash the stock rom. I can't seem to find a comprehensive index of information. Every time I think I've got something figured out I stumble on new bits of information.

Honestly, at this point, you need to unroot and reroot again using the method in Mudavo's post. You used the wrong method to root with motochopper. Motochopper was only for the MDC version. That could be why you are having the issues that you are. That's all I can suggest at this point. Start with a clean slate and try it again. Trust me you aren't the only one to do this. I've done it a few times myself. It sucks but at least you know you did everything right. You're going to have to flash a stock MDC rom that came shipped with the phone via Odin. Then take the OTA to update your phone to MDL and then just follow Mudavo's post to root the proper way when you're on the MDL version.
What about the TWRP recovery I have installed? Am I going to have to deal with that in some way?
What are the advantages of Odin over TWRP? I'm not trying to question your judgment btw. I'm legit curious because I've only ever used TWRP to
Flash roms.
Sorry for all the dumb questions.
Btw . While I was waiting for your reply I tried trouble shooting a bit myself. To see if I could fix my own problem. I found a thread with MDL stock rooted and a bunch of firmware and kernel files. I flashed to it in TWRP and it's working reasonably well so far. I'm still dtf for other methods if mine is somehow flawed.
My method didn't work. When I restarted from TWRP (after no other issues) the phone for stuck.
The phone was restarted several times and booted fine. It wasn't until I restarted into TWRP then and then back into normal boot that I had issues
this time. So I'm going to do what you suggested. I just have a couple questions.
If my rom/recovery is corrupted how do I fix my problem. I would need a working rom AND recovery to flash stock rom. I'm not sure where to start since everything is all messed up.
Thank you so much for your help. You're the best!
You should do a Full Odin restore to Stock and start from scratch if you continue to have issues.

You can also try this thread to ensure a full wipe before flash

Do I need to flash the stock kernal too? Will this eliminate my TWRP recovery installation as well?
If you odin back to stock it also has the kernel and stock recovery this will start you all over. Also of it doesnt boot past galaxy s4 screen then boot into recovery and wipe data after you odin back.

Alright... so another problem. I need the latest Samsung USB driver right? Unfortunately...
1.5.25.0 as linked to in this thread cannot be downloaded because uploaded.com or whatever says I've exceeded my allowance. Trouble is... I haven't downloaded anything from them ever. I have this problem all the time because of my ISP (Satellite Internet).
Is there a rehost? Do these drivers not install themselves automatically when the device is plugged into the PC?

Alright guys. I got it done a while back. Phone is back to normal stock.
Perusing the internet I found this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_hXUJ-u-cw
As it happens I linked to the wrong video in my OP. The method in that video is exactly what I did to root in the first place. The proper way. I installed TWRP from GooManager.
So if I rooted correctly and I installed TWRP correctly what do you suppose caused my problem? I want to root and install custom recovery again!
If I root using the CF-Auto-Root method will I then be able to install custom recovery in goomanager or does custom recovery need to be installed in some other special way?

Hi All,
I have a custom ROM and CWM recovery by cofface on my S4. Today, the micro-usb port stopped working - no charging, cannot connect to the PC - nothing.
The phone is under warranty and I want to unroot and flash stock Samsung firmware before I handover the device to the Service Center
Please help - All tutorials I watched mention I need to connect the phone to Odin via PC and flash stock firmware. This is not an option and currently Mobile Odin does not support S4
Any help is much appreciated, I am too desperate to get the device unrooted and fixed as soon as possible.
IF this is the wrong forum to post, please re-direct me to the correct one. Thank you. :crying:

i dont know if this will help,
try to clean micro usb port.
remove battery, make sure that the center connector in the port is straight. If it's bent up or down, use a flat object to push it back towards the center

Without ODIN it's not possible to do and Odin requires USB connection.
There is an app called MOBILE ODIN at the plays store but as of this moment
it's not compatible with the S4 phones.
The best you can do now is to go into cwm/twrp recovery and do a full wipe,
factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik cache and wipe system.
After that format the internal sdcard in cwm or twrp recovery's advanced
options. That way there will be no rom or personal information, files or any
thing else in the phone so it will be ready for the exchange.
Just be sure you have enough battery power left to do this
unless you have a external battery charger.
Good luck!

From the above, I gather I won't be able to flash stock rom. I am not sure if the Service Center will accept to repair the device without the ROM (I'm based in India and the Service guys are funny here when it comes to repairing stuff under warranty) -
Is it possible to Flash stock rom - Via CWM ?
EDIT - I'd also like to add that I had taken a nandroid backup via CWM of the Stock Rom + Apps before flashing the Custom ROM. Will this help in anyway to restore Stock Rom without using a USB cable??

Yes you can flash stock or custom roms if they are CWM or TWRP flashable zipfiles.
You would need to go to the playstore on your phone and install Kies Air which lets
you connect the phone to the computer without usb, it uses wifi.
If you have a nandroid backup, all you need to do is to restore it in cwm/twrp recovery.
If you do that you will not even need to do a full wipe or anything, just restore the
backup nandroid. You do not need usb to restore a nandroid backup.
There are a lot of simular apps at the play store which also would work for you.
All you need to do then is to download any custom or stock cwm or twrp flashable
zip file roms and copy them from the computer to your phone.
You can also download those roms directly from your phone using wifi or data
and then reboot to cwm/twrp recovery and flash them after you do a full
wipe/factory reset/wipe system, wipe cache and dalvik cache first.
good luck!

Thanks a lot for the above information! It should take care of getting back to stock firmware (Step 1).
Step 2 - Resetting the flash counter - I believe Triangle Away should work for this.
Step 3 - Flashing Stock Samsung Recovery - Is this possible without Odin. I do not have the stock recovery file but should be available somewhere on the internet.

Triangle away does not work (at this time) with the GT-I9500.
Have you tried unroot via SuperSU?
You must download from Google Play SuperSU, and enter settings. There you must enter "UnRoot".
It's very simple
Thanks All. I have been able to flash stock firmware using the following guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41575256
Recovery is back to stock
Data / Factory reset performed to clear all user data
When I go into download mode, the status is as follows:
Odin Mode
product name - GT-I9500
Current Binary - Samsung Official
System Status - Official
Do I need to do anything more? The flashing of stock rom as per the above guide took care of everything.
The only thing I am not sure is the flash counter - is there anyway I can check what it is set to?:fingers-crossed:
Hey Guys
So this morning, i wanted to try to change the DPI because Themer didn't work, and I read in a comment Google Play Store that the DPI should be changed.
But when i changed the DPI, and restartet my phone, my phone got stuck in my Clockworkmod Recovery, and automaticly boots into recovery. I tried to restore to stock backup, but it didn't work.
I am completely lost, and i can't flash a new recovery in ODIN, which i tried because Clockworkmod won't let me mount usb storage. It says that my PIT partition has been removed, and then fails.
I don't know what to do, anyone please help, i am desperate!!!
Thanks in advance

Yellow comm is ok as long as the port shows up. Go to sammobile.com and download the mdl firmware. You'll have to register but it's free. Then use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from the zip you'll download. Use that file in the PDA slot in Odin.

Edit, what country and carrier are you?
Allright!
So i tried to mount usb storage one last time in CWM - In windows i opened device manager, and found a device called SamsungPHONE or somehting like that which had a yellow triangle, so i tried to update and find a driver. And then suddenly it worked! I copied the ROM to my SD card, and when that it had finished copying i wiped data and cache.
then i installed the zip, and rebooted! AND it works!! Finally, goddamn i was scared at that point!
Thanks for the help so far jd1639 - i almost gave up, but then you came!
Now one more thing: I don't want to be en this situation again, so how can i install TWRP without screwing everything up?
CWM is no longer an option for me!
THANKS AGAIN jd1639

Hv been using Arrow rom 8.0. Works fine but wanted to upgrade to Arrow rom 9.0 which is based on the rom for India.
The phone is rooted and custom recovery installed(don't know much about the way to use it). Downloaded the rom and went into recovery mode. Ok'd the wipe data/factory reset. Ok'd wipe cache. Ok'd the option of upgrade from external storage and the phone went to the manual mode with csc as inu and asking for the filename. Didn't know what to do so yanked the battery and rebooted. The booted to Arrow rom 8.0 with all data gone.
One more thing I noticed that in recovery mode I had to use a magnifying glass to read the options. Also there was no option to choose the external storage ie the sd card where I download or copy the roms it only shows phone storage.
Would appreciate the help received in pointing me to the right direction.
These are really basic questions. I'm supprised you managed to flash a rom in the first place.
Full wipe in recovery, if you still could boot after wiping, like in your case, then you didn't wipe correctly. Your phone shouldn't be able to boot anymore after the wiping (because there is no more rom installed).
Then flash the rom. If there is no option for external storage (i think this is highly unlikely), then just copy it to your internal sd card and flash from there.
Are you really sure you have a custom recovery? Because the way you are descriping it, it sounds more like the stock recovery.

Thanks for the advice. Checked using recovery tool and it says current firmware: stock.
How do I make a full wipe. And also what about the manual mode I get in the recovery mode.
Can mobile odin be used for flashing.
Again, these are really basic questions. You should read the forum more, my guess is you have a I9500, so start reading in that section. Read the parts about rooting, flashing a custom recovery and flashing.
All the information you need is there. I can tell you the exact steps you need to take, but figuring it out for yourself will save you lots of trouble in the furture if anything goes wrong.
I have no idea what manual mode is, so my guess is that you don't have a custom recovery installed. What is the name of the recovery? Or doesn't it display any name? You shouldn't be needing Mobile Odin, maybe only for rooting or flashing a custom recovery, but not for flashing the rom.

Had read the forum before flashing the rom. Rooted my phone and had installed CWM via Odin and confirmed it in the recovery mode. And only after this flashed the Arrow Rom and used it for couple of months.
Don't know what happened to CWM it wasn't there this time in recovery mode, it showed Android System Recovery and not CWM.
Anyway have flashed CWM again along with Crash Rom 11.
Thanks again bro.
