Does anyone know if I can buy an external mic to plug into the N4 and be used while video recording? The mic in the phone itself is very distorted during the events so I want to record videos with high quality sound during loud music events.

You can but it won't work!!!
I have the same requirement and the standard video app will not use an external mic - It must be a software issue...
I have found an app recently posted on the Play store: Ultra Video Camera. It will allow you to use an external microphone to record video. YAY! It's clunky to use (early days) and has very few user features within it but it does have an option to choose the inbuilt microphone or to use a headset/external microphone.
It works with my Lavalier mic as well as my standard headset + mic that I use for phone calls. The problem is that the quality of the sound recording is AWFUL.
There's a background hiss and a regular 'clicking' throughout the entire video. BOO!
I've emailed the creators and asked them if it can be improved - I'll update here when I get a response.
That aside - It does prove that the issue is a software challenge - and so I ask if anyone can 'hack' embellish the standard video app that comes with Nexus 4 to accommodate an external microphone?
My experience of the quality of the sound on the standard video app is that it's very good, but it prohibits standing any more than 2 metres away from the phone when making a video, hence the requirement for an external microphone.

I tried to video record my son while he was speaking but at playback I could hardly hear his voice. He was about 1 meter apart and I could hear him as if he was 20m away. My voice sounded ok though. I assume that the microphone used for audio recording is the same as the phone mic with higher volume control.
Is everyone experiencing the same?
Also, Ihaven't found any controls to configure audio levels for different circumstances (i.e. phone ringer, speakerphone, speaker during conversation, etc.) Is it necessary to only configure volume when you are in that area (i.e only during conversation or during playback) and not all at once in a special control panel? (I hope you understand the last part as I don't know how to explain better)
I also feel that the playback volume for recorded video is too low (even on max volume). The audio quality is also not as good as I would hope. I have yet to test playback on a PC though.
Unfortunately anything related to Desire HD sound is low at the bottom line no matter recording or speaker it is.
agreed that recording volume is too low. But one thing i did find is that when you hold your phone to record, the natural position where your right hand holds the phone actually covers the microphone (well at least for me). So make sure your hand isnt covering that and it might improve sound a little.
But when i playback a recording on my laptop it sounds ok when i max the volume.. definitely audible.
Im also getting this low mic problem, made sure i was not covering mic, still low volume. Even took the case off, still no joy, cant believe they did not test this before launch
Please HTC sort this out
After playing back recorded videos on my laptop, i'd agree with SupremeBeaver that the volume is ok. The sound quality seems much better too, so i'm not too fussed now
Today I realized that the phone don't have any bass response at all when you record a video. You can put the phone right behind the speaker and it won't record any bass... but if you use the voice recording app, it does recognice bass.
Like this video i've found in the internet:
There are any way to deactivate the stereo recording on videos?

Old news, there's a whole topic on this already with like 200 post.
Supercurio is aware of the problem and is already working on a solution to be released with his VooDoo sound and color.
delete it, i've found a lot of threads like this .- Sry
Hi
I have a i9500 which I have enjoyed its high res images and full HD detailed images in 13MP (ozcan rom capability). Everything works flawlessly in my s4. Am not so sure what the problem could be when it comes to the recording of sound in video and voice recording.
I have been scrounging the net for a possible solution but realized that the s4 has a design flaw of pop and crack sounds when video recording. I do experience those but negligible. The sound quality recording is very good on the s4. My issue is it comes with an unpleasant water tap hiss that requires ambient audio to be a certain threshold to completely drown it like an ordinary conversation in a few feet from the microphone. This problem I encountered in both stock rom & ozcan rom.
The trouble comes in when you decide to record video in absolute or near silence. It will be very notable on playback at volume 10 but hardly audible at volume 4. This happens both in voice or cam recorder. Has anyone figured out how to rid of this unpleasant hiss?
Isn't anyone experiencing /has experienced this at all?
Hi,
I have experienced this while recording myself playing guitar, but I thought it was the amplifier hahaha. Sorry I can't help, it seems it's an issue with S4 itself, and if that's the case you can't do anything AFAIK. If I end up discovering a solution I'll update you on this, but I don't think I'll find anything...

Oh, I've just seen your reply, I hope am not too late. An in depth further analysis on the nature of this problem is, in the recorded video if you care to open it in a professional video editor, the left audio channel is the one with the distortion. The right one is crystal clear for my case with 0% hiss. In voice recording, only one channel is doing the recording and I assume it is the left one because the distortion is also present in it as bad. I'd like to here of your case though.
Just now I plugged in the earphones with the mic and voice recorder app automatically switched to using the mic on the earphones and this only happens in voice recording. Video recording doesn't automatically switch to external mic with the earphones plugged in, am not certain it is a video mic vs earphone mic compatibility issue. The good news is the earphone mic picks up very faint clear sounds even whispers in 1.5 feet proximity and WITHOUT ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT the distortion (water tap/whistling sound I get) that I get from the internal mic of the phone in voice recording only. Now what is the chance that it is my internal mic next to my charging port that is at fault?
After doing alittle more research right now, I have learnt that the voice recorder does its recording in mono hence has only one channel and the Video recorder does its recording in stereo since it has two audio channels (left and right). This now explains when it fails to use the earphone microphone as an audio external recorder.
Now the S4 has two different microphones as now seen by the video recorder's audio output. I have established that the culprit channel is the left channel. One simple test has now narrowed down which microphone is faulty. I ran the voice recorder app and placed my phone on my bed. I scratched with my finger really close to where the mic 1 (next to the usb charger is) then did the same to the mic 2 next to the earphone jack port. Thank God!! the audio recording has confirmed that it is indeed using the left channel which is the mic 1 placed next to the charging port. This gives me the chance to use this video to rectify the issue. My only problem is finding a genuine part because there are people complaining of quality issues with the replacement parts.

Hi there Kernel ranger! Did you manage to fix the noise of the mic? I'm having the same trouble. This morning I recorded a Koto concert from a distance and the left channel is plagued with some kind of electrostatic noise. Right channel seems ok, though. I think I will have to clean that rubbish with Ozone...

Am glad people with the same issue are following this thread. I'm telling you! I ran all the tests I could and confirmed 100% that my Microphone Mic Flex Cable Ribbon part needed replacement but before I could even do it, someone liked my s4 as it was and I sold it to them. What is your s4 model number? Now I got a Note 4.
What you can do is first get it cleaned with even rubbing alcohol if necessary, if this problem just started just recently. After cleaning it and the problem persists, you will have to get a repair kit like I did from ebay then order Microphone Mic Flex Cable Ribbon part to replace the faulty one. Youtube has tonnes of video about how to replace that part and it will only cost you $10 at the most if you do it yourself correctly.
I have tried several apps for live music recording and I get saturation. Only the video camcorder records a clear audio, but I don't want the video, only the audio. (Sorry for my English)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.media.bestrecorder.audiorecorder
Give this a try.
Horrible, over saturated the best is Easy voice recorder and selecting microphone without processing. And I get a little saturation. The perfect option is to record a video with the built-in camera app. The audio is clear, but I need to convert (extract) video to mp3
What kind of music are u trying to record
I'm having the exact same issue.. when recording from my car, I'm using AOSP extended, and I've tried lots of cameras, still getting the saturated issue
I'm using LineageOS 14.1 and got this in the camera recordings, as well as in the recorder app's recordings. Don't have a clue of why this happens
EDIT: Was trying to record an rock concert, and every other phone that recorded the concert was fine and didn't saturate
I'm musician, and I'm trying to record the band, but all of the voice/music recorder apps fails with the job, only the built-in video camera record a clear audio, but I don't want the video, I want the audio only. I'm using stock Rom.
Audio Recorder by Sony works well for me.
It's available on PlayStore :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonymobile.androidapp.audiorecorder
Sony app does not work for me. On stage, the sound is too loud, the built-in camera app records fine, but third party apps records with saturation. The iPhone and Samsung records great.

Are you using a custom rom? Of you are, which camera and what rom is it?
Maybe you can try with this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.audioRec

I'm with stock Rom, and using the camera app from Motorola. I would like a third party app that uses the same microphone settings used in the camera app. Otherwise I'll have to record a video and then, convert it to mp3.

With this app I get similar result to "Easy voice recorder".
The settings I used was captured in this screenshot and gain is something below to -6 dB.
I still get some of saturation but is usable
hi guys any of you can record stereo through their phone?
(stock maybe?)
Only with the camcorder. You need to record a video then convert it to mp3 :-/
Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder may be worth a try. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hiqrecorder.free&hl=en
I haven't had an opportunity to test it with a full band, but I tried it recently with some amplified music and the results were encouraging. This is with "mic selection" set to "raw audio." It does not record in stereo on my G5+.
The free version will only record 10 minutes, but that should be enough for a test.
Note: I have an older "legacy" version of the app, so some setting might be different in the current version.
Have you tried plugging in an external mic? It could be something about the way the internal mics work (yes, mics, plural, as there are more than one of them). I recall with older Moto phones, like the E2, there was an issue with using VOIP as the dual mics would create a problem (solution was to cover the rear mic with tape), whereas the stock phone calling app used both mics in tandem to cancel out unwanted background noise and it did so nicely.
Perhaps the third party recording apps are having a similar problem since Moto seems to use their own way to handle the dual mics for clear audio, which other apps might not be able to use properly. However, using an external mic plugged into the headphone jack (plenty of cheap adapters for pro mics, or even mics designed for phones with the proper TRRS pin out) might solve the problem as you are bypassing whatever is proprietary about the microphone system built in.
Or, you could try covering the rear mic with tape like the moto e2, but if you want solid quality I'd recommend the external mic as a boost even if you get the in-camera mic to your liking.
Good luck!
Has anyone had issues recording audio on their pixel 2 xl? I typically use Evernote to record audio memos and they sound significantly quiet and muffled compared to the audio recorded with the camera app (recording video).
I downloaded a few other voice memo apps and having similiar issues, so curious if this is a general issue or isolated to my device only.
Thanks,
Mario
having the same issue with i. e. Whatsapp on my Pixel 2 XL. The recording seems to be a bit to quiet. I think it is some kind of Software issue since there is no issue on video recording.
I just tried the app Smart Recorder to record a voice message. On standard settings, it was too quiet as well. After I turn off the Auto Gain Control of the Pixel in the settings of this App and set Mic Gain Factor to 4,7x the voice has a decent volume level.

jep. bothering me on whatsapp, too, when doing voice messages. its something third party apps related i think, since video recording voice is loud enough.
need to get google aware of this, though.
Right! I initially thought the mic was bad, but video recording proves that the mic is just fine. So I'm inclined to agree that this has to be software related
