so.. when i was recording in the club with n95, e71.. sound was ok.. but with HTC HD2, sound is terrible!!!!!
is there some tip? tweak to reduce microphone sensitivity, etc??

Another bump from me for this
Older PPC devices used to have a Control Panel setting for microphone AGC or manual level settings but I can't find anything in the registry that looks likely.
I've tried using the HD2 to record video at both a rock concert (very loud) and a folk concert (not very loud!) and both had good video but highly distorted sound levels.
Apart from sticking some blutack over the microphone, are there any other suggestions?

Same problem here.
With the n95 i had no problem geting good sound on my video when recording at a party with loud music. But with all my HTC phones i get crapy sound.
Is there any solution to this, exept asking the dj to turn the music down?
I know that this thread is old, but... has anyone found any solution on this?
I was in a Guns'n'Roses European Tour last night in Barcelona, and today i've been watching the videos. All videos have the sound distorted and useless, i'm very dissapointed on it.
I know that Samsung Galaxy S has the same problem , but seems that audiobooster solves it

not only nokia n95 but iphone users enjoy very good sound while recording
on our HTC HD2 it's seems like the mic gain to much volume and alot of bass enter the mic
which cause bad sound like the speaker going to ripoff from the device
any suggestion?

Recorded with Tapemachine. Same conditions, same audio source, same settings... The only difference is hardware autogain control enabled on first sample, and disabled on the second one
How to disable it during video recording? No idea yet

Hmm i am really waithing for this fix. recording is HD is quite cool and good quality but its useless because the sound always go's bad because its recorded to loud.
New info:
AudioHardwareInterface: AudioHardwareBase::setParamenters(downgain=0)
That's how Tapemachine switch off hardware auto-gain
And auto-gain off seems only to work with mic set to front (AudioSource: VOICE_RECOGNITION)

hohoho. Now we just need someone with the knowledge to do that. Thanks rafalense for find out this
Don't forget that it needs those settings to be optimised for audio calls. Most likely, with theses settings, while in call, the audio will catch more of the surrounding than the vocal itself.`
So the best way for this to works would be to make an apps that does the command then goes dormant. Then you can record whatever and, when done, disable and close the dormant app (kinda like TrackerBooster)
BTW, don't forget that you're recording with a crappy built in microphone from a smartphone. I'll try to do the same with an external microphone to see.
I own both the Galaxy S and the Samsung Wave s8500.... And, i gotta say, that the Wave has MUCH better sound when recording video at 720p + Its much better synced with the actual video... Maybe you could look at the Wave and how i manages sound? It has the Bada OS (unfortunately)

video bitrate is already quite high but higher audio bitrate might be a good improvement
Hardware is able to record @48000 and around 256Kbps, but video and audio are out-of-sync
My guess, something coded wrong in the driver, so lets see if voodoo sound new kernel fixes it, and then we will record hd video with hd audio as well

why do you think this fixes it.. from my readings that kernel does not muck with video recording rates or microphone gain...

Also possible:
16000 - 22050 - 24000 - 32000 - 44100 - 48000 tested
How can you get the camera app to record at 44.1KHz?
Edit: Got it. Weird though, even though it's 44.1KHz, the cutoff frequency is 12.0KHz instead of 22.050KHz. Not much improvement over 8KHz cutoff, but better than nothing.

I've heard that the recording sound is horrible, but can it be this bad? I've had my TF for over a month now, few days ago I tried recording a video clip using the built-in camera, and the playing sound was barely audible! Even if I shouted into the mic. I could only manage to hear a very faint voice. Other than that the sound from games/movies/music is fine though. Did I get a bad unit?

all the videos i've recorded so far have mono audio for some weird reason ...
and there's no option for stereo sound in camera settings ...
tbh I've never taken a video on the phone yet! I just assumed it would be stereo

You can but it won't work!!!
I have the same requirement and the standard video app will not use an external mic - It must be a software issue...
I have found an app recently posted on the Play store: Ultra Video Camera. It will allow you to use an external microphone to record video. YAY! It's clunky to use (early days) and has very few user features within it but it does have an option to choose the inbuilt microphone or to use a headset/external microphone.
It works with my Lavalier mic as well as my standard headset + mic that I use for phone calls. The problem is that the quality of the sound recording is AWFUL.
There's a background hiss and a regular 'clicking' throughout the entire video. BOO!
I've emailed the creators and asked them if it can be improved - I'll update here when I get a response.
That aside - It does prove that the issue is a software challenge - and so I ask if anyone can 'hack' embellish the standard video app that comes with Nexus 4 to accommodate an external microphone?
My experience of the quality of the sound on the standard video app is that it's very good, but it prohibits standing any more than 2 metres away from the phone when making a video, hence the requirement for an external microphone.
