[Root ICS/JB] Universal Root for Any ROM Without Flashing Kernel. - Galaxy S II General

Good news! Chainfire answered my email and he said that it is fine that i keep doing my job using his SuperSU! So i hope that his future "SuperSU updates" are not blocked and be unzipable.
I want to say that SuperSU is not opensourced anymore, tried to get in contact with chainfire again but no answers.. so I am not allowed to add busybox to his job and redistribute anymore, and i will NOT try to brake his .zip copyrights with others softwares, stop asking. For now, this project is closed, maybe there´s a different way in the future.
I saw a script like this around here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794) but has never been updated again, so I made a script (based on Phil3759 and Chainfire Script, Credits to them) with an updated version of SuperSU and this is the result!
It Root any phone in any ROM using the SuperSU 1.86 from Chainfire and Busybox 1.20.2 from Linus Yang.Only.
I actually did this script to me and my friends. I'm just sharing. I'll keep it updated with Chainfire and Phil3759 releases, need it or not (If you don´t like the superuser that comes with Phil'z kernel and you want to go to SuperSU again, just flash this ).
Chainfire recommends that: "If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root, updating the app will not suffice."
You just have to put this in the mini SD card and flash it as an Update in recovery mode then.. its ROOTED!
(If you have CWM and is going to flash this for any reason, you can copy the file to the internal memory.)
To get in recovery mode turn your phone off, now press Power Button + Volume Up + Center Button for a while.
Send your feedback!

Hi,
I need to root my stock JB rom but I have two questions.
1. Is this the easiest and more effective way to root JB based roms?
2. Will it install latest CWM recovery permanently ?
Thanks

Hi!
Yes, this is the easiest way to root JB, but this does NOT install CWM recovery.
To have CWM Recovery installed permanently you will have to flash a supported Kernel, but you will have to do a little more research to learn how to flash a kernel.
If you really need a kernel with a CWM Recovery i suggest you to use PhilZ kernels, here is the link to his kernel thread. :good::good:
Good luck!

Hello Danpamio,
thanks for your effort. But it still says "signature verification error". The Galaxy Tab 3 seems to be a problematic device.

Try it! Then give me your feedback, i specially used it on all S2 i rooted..

Did not work on "Swipe MTV Slash" (MTK MT6577, Android 4.1.2).
Tried both signed and newsigned. The update terminates with aborted message.

So what i did. I tried both zip but it got aborted then i enabled signature verification and it installed, first i tried the one with new sign it worked and restarted the phone. But i dont see any su app on my device or anything else. I tried to download su but i do not have root. So i tried the other zip
it also installed without any error and restarted device but still no root or su app.Am I missing something. I tried it on a Toughshield R500+ with 4.1.2.
Thanks

My stupid mistake. I used the Acer recovery App and changed the boot recovery from CWM to the Stock US and then the update processed normally. I am no on ICS !!!!!
Hi Steve,
How do I insure I am doing what you are?
Basically, how do configure cwm to achieve what you have.
Thanks

No SuperUser prompt in (stock) ICS

I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (PT-7500R from Rogers), trying to root on the new official ICS.
I have followed the directions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239185
CWM installed and works fine. After applying "Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip" in CWM, I boot into Android, I see SuperUser in my app menu and can bring up its interface.
However, when I try to launch a su-required function (such as Reboot Recovery in ROM Manager), I don't get a prompt for SU permissions.
I have tried this with both OTA and manual (Odin3) installs of the official ICS from Rogers, from unrooted stock Honeycomb, several times.
I don't encounter this problem with stock Honeycomb... rooting that version appears to work fine.
I have experimented with some community builds, perhaps I have installed an incompatible kernel that needs replacing? I don't know, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

diggerB

You're not rooted anymore. The superuser app is there but it can't do anything since the su is missing. You have to re-root.

Thanks for the feedback... but I just went back into CWM and applied the root again, still in exactly the same boat.
Thanks to all, I found a solution in another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31179418#post31179418
Superuser just didn't want to work. The SuperSU root method referred by the OP in that thread worked great. All is well again. Until next time of course.
Hi, if you go to "www.galaxytabhacks.com" you will find the solution, there is an upgrade to superuser.

[Q] Can you install the 4.1.2 OTA on an unlocked phone with CWM installed?

I got the ota the other day and debated installing it because my M is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked and I have flashed ClockworkMod recovery. I searched for a while to see what others were saying and didn't really find anything of note so I decided to go ahead and run the install. When the phone rebooted into recovery and tried to install the update, it gave me the following Error: E: Failed to verify whole-file signature. Then there was an option to apply unsigned update (or zip, I can't remember the wording exactly). I chose not to do this and went back in the recovery menu and rebooted back into system. The phone booted normally and then immediately rebooted on its own back into recovery to try to install the update again, ending in the same results. This happened 2-3 more times before I finally formatted the Cache Partition through cwm which ended the bootloop (not sure that you can really describe that as a bootloop since it was actually doing what it thought it should be). My question is this, is it safe to go ahead and install the unsigned update via CWM? I have also since seen threads stating that if you had removed some of the bloatware apps, that the update would fail. I have removed many of these unneeded apps, should I reinstall them? I have seen a link or two to the bloat apks...
Having a unlocked bootloader doesn't matter. You just need to be stock 4.1.1 bloatware and all.
what he said^
you can update it with cwm but you have to have all the crapware that came stock still present.
Do you have to unroot first to get it to install? I have TWRP recovery on mine and can't get the update to install.

Well I tried it and it failed the check for the Amazon MP3 app. I reinstalled it from the play store but according to another post I found later this doesn't work because it isn't installed to the /system/app directory. The only way around this that I have seen is to use the RAZR M utility to return back to out of box status and start over. Not worth it to me but if anyone has another idea, I am all ears...

You could try grabbing the apk from /data/app and moving it to /system...
Or grab it from one of the many /system dumps around here...
Someone should turn the OTA into a flashable zip from CWM/TWRP that doesn't check for that.
I may do that...

I had the same thought about moving the apk to the system/app directory and did just that. My expectation was that I would still get the error but for a different app since I just tested with the one that had been throwing the error but it didn't change, still gave the error for the amazon mp3 app even though it was successfully installed in the correct directory. Thanks for the thought though. If you could turn it into a flashable zip, I would be much appreciated. I would love to do that myself but I have no idea how. I know just enough through trial and error (and a lot of forum reading) to be dangerous...
After installing 4.1.2, I can no longer fastboot back to 4.1.1 or 4.0.6. They put in some sort of backrev check.

There is a 4.1.1 system dump here. Download it, transfer any missing apps in /system/app over to your phone.
The reason you have to have those is that the current one from the playstore will be different, causing the update check to fail and abort.

Thanks! I was in a boot loop and this solved it. Everything seems to be working fine. Are there any negative effects from not having flashed the userdata image? It doesn't update or change anything needed for 4.4?
