[Q] I sould buy the nexus or.... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I sould buy the Nexus 4 or the LG Optimus G?
i'm dont know what to buy, i really like the Optimus G he get a lot of memory and very very intresting OP with cool features,
but the thing that i'm very concerned of is that the nexus is more pupolar and he's the first to get the android update, and he get a huge developer community, what do you think, what i sould buy?
and forget about the price lets say that both of them are the same.....

It's your choice buddy, if you want a large amount of memoy take the G, - about memory, i can tell you that for my usage the 16 Gb of the N4 is really not enough, I mean I have several music, two FLAC album, 1 movie (700Mb), plus my titnium backup, (no nand backup), some little HD Games (~30-40 MB, angry birds, etc...) and I have 3 GB left, it's not enough cause I can't put interesting HD Games at the same time, like GTA VC+3, Need for speed, real racing, shadow gun, let's golf, (at the beginning, I use to put 1 or 2, and uninstall/install another when I like, ut it's really annoying)... it's really short - but if you want a really powerful android device, go for N4, and you'll get th best software support ever,

As said above, it comes down to what you are looking for in a device. I myself love to mess with roms and tweaks. I don't have more than 1Gb of music on my N4, and no movies, and 3-4 simple games. Only thing I care about is enough space for photos, which I usually save on my MacBook once a month, and for my nandroid backups and roms/tweaks. So, I choose the huge developing community behind N4, and the freedom that it gives me to do what I like with the device.
N4 has an excellent screen, is really well built (compared to my other device Galaxy S4), has a good camera and good battery life. On the other hand you can't (easily) change the battery and no sd card to expand the memory.
So, it's up to you to decide wich one you like best.

I will have to agree with tennandcoz1 on that. Even on my Galaxy S4, I'm running 4.2.2 Google Edition rom (Jamal2367 V13 today!). So I can have great battery life, simple-clean-fast-smooth android experience!

better that way, hope LG gets the message. in a perfect world you let people do what they do best. lg makes great phones, google makes a great OS, xda developers build great extensions. every second LG wastes by trying to screw with that it should be their loss. seriously, there has not been a device with that much support, the n4 is a very special thing.

This lack of expandable memory was really a sticking point for me with the N4 as well.. I came from an S2 Skyrocket which I loved, and was seriously looking at the S3 as my next phone..
This lack of SD slot and replaceable battery had been a huge negative stuck in my head ( from ancient apple ipod days most likely)
Once I sat down and really looked at it, I never even used the expanded memory on the SII.. Sure I had a 32GB SD in there, but in combined storage, I never came close to the 16GB.
ROMS - I had 2-3 Nandroid backups on there, but most roms I played around with I simply deleted..
Music - Pandora and Google Music - Didnt store any locally.
Pictures / Videos - Went str8 to dropbox, would clear the small cache on the phone (1-2GB) every few months
Apps and Games - Same as roms.. Might download tons to try out, but typically only set into 2-3 GB worth of "daily drivers" that stick around
And the battery, its still on the original one and going strong, so that I never technically "used" either.
Once I sat down and looked at things this way, getting the N4 was a no-brainier ( esp due to the price premium for the S3 in my situation)

Why smartphones suck

I have a Galaxy S from Bell. It was great for a while, but now its degraded into something barely above a brick. The lag is so bad that I can't answer phone calls sometimes because the screen is unresponsive.
I've had a few smart phones so far, original iPhone, iPhone 3G, Nexus One and now the Galaxy S. I really want to get away from the Galaxy S because of the combination of quality (ie. the complete lack of it) and the ridiculous timelines Samsung, and then carriers take to upgrade a handset to the latest version of android, if at all. But when I look at the options out there, they all suck.
The iPhone is decent, if you don't mind living in a walled garden. But I'd like a few more options than Apple is willing to provide such as removable battery, drag and drop files, something akin to native support of flac and divx/xvid. I really don't feel like playing my mp3s with one player and then flac with another. I also don't feel like converting movies to mp4, a standard which clearly sucks by virtue of the fact that no one would use it if apple didn't force them to.
With Android I have to deal with constantly waiting for the latest OS, usually 6 months or longer after Google has released it, and then it's been shat all over by the manufacturer and/or carrier. So that leaves pure Google phones, of which there's the Nexus One and the Nexus S.
I had the Nexus One, good phone, except for the screen. Constantly looking for shade so I can see the screen in the sun is a pain. The Nexus S fixes that, but no microSD slot? Are you f-ing kidding me? You couldn't put that in there? It's available on pretty much EVERY other smart phone that isn't the iPhone. And no 32GB option. Basically, it's a Nexus One with a curved screen (that may or may not introduce display issues according to Engadget). I mean, NFC? You give me NFC, but no microSD? I think running into a 16GB space barrier is going to happen way more often than me trying to share contact info with someone through NFC.
Can someone please make a phone that supports common media formats (mp3/flac/xvid/divx, etc), decent processor (dragons, birds, dogs, I don't care), a screen I can see in sunlight and either 32GB non expandable or better yet a microSD slot. Stick a camera on there if you feel like it. I don't even care if there's a front facing camera, because no one is walking around making video calls.
Smartphones suck.

The lag shouldn't be that bad, I used the phone for a while with no lagfix and it wasn't that bad.
Do a factory reset, and maybe even install the JPU firmware if you're willing. The lag is no longer a problem with JPU.
Maybe the upcoming LG Optimus 2X will finally give us a smartphone to beat all smartphones. Hard to imagine LG being much better than Samsung though.
wipe phone,
install JK4,
flash hardcore k10,
Done.

Docs JPU Rom, voodoo lagfix. Nuff said.
If you are *****ing about it so much and can't sort the issues you should go back to an iphone so Steve can tell you how you should use your phone.
It's not about my technical ability to apply a rom or a lagfix. It's a.) I shouldn't have to, I'm not trying to do something with the phone that the manufacturer didn't intend, and therefore I shouldn't have to apply these things; b.) The only reason I haven't done those things is because I've read on these forums that a lot of people have had the internal sd card fail after flashing, and don't feel like leaving my phone with Bell for 6 weeks for repair. Although at this point, the phone's performance is so abysmal the scale is tipping.
And Bynar, why the implication that I'm some apple fan boy, did I not say that I also didn't like the iPhone? I like how I'm somehow not worthy of a galaxy s if I don't relish the idea of flashing roms and lagfixes just to answer the phone when it rings.
+1 for this smart phone rant. I loved to read it. Some valid points

Never had that kind of issue with my phone, im lucky to get a non laggy phone!
If you just use your phone for call why not just get a cheap throw around phone for that function?
I've been using SGS from bell since october with original JH2, no lagfix and haven't got massive lag so many are talking about.
Using JK4 since 2 weeks and it's even more fluid. No lagfix what so ever...battery holds up couple of days, no FC, no lags (installing apps is realy fast compared to JH2), I reboot the thing now and then and that's it.
Only thing I did, when I got the device, I had to hard reset the thing then worked great. Same thing when I got JK4, Hard reset before and after.
On the other hand, I use the thing as it is: a pretty descent sum of many technologies. Great gaming, but not as a standalone gaming platform; great camera but not as a high end standalone camera; good GPS but not as good as hi end standalone GPS; it's pretty fast but not as much as a standalone computer; great browsing but not as much as on a computer...
Catch my drift? If you want something that can do everything and still hold on your hand, smartphone are great. But as a cost... If you want blasing fast like on a Core i7 laptop, get a core i7 laptop!
I'm not looking for Core i7 in a smartphone, just enough performance listen to music and watch movies in formats like xvid and flac. The galaxy s can do this with the caveats that with my handset in particular it lags so badly that at times I can't answer the phone and it hiccups during flac playback. Both of these issues I believe are due to problems with the internal sd card.
No it's not, I can do all those things easy with mine.
When I run with the device, I have Mp3 playing over bluetooth stereo player (controls works fine alors), sporty pal, Tracker booster and I can receive call (or make em' when I hit the right button on my earphones)
My advice: Hard reset+clear all thoses caches in recovery mode then reinstall everything one by one.

Agree with most of your points, rather I believe these phones sound better if called 'Tech' phones. The major letdowns for me is the software within than the hardware.
How 'smart' are they when they don't do the basic intended function Out of the box reliably ...24X7X365....without rooting/lagfixing/modding..(wow lost track of these........ ).
Google may market android as 'Open, mk dir android;cd android....' and so on but how many consumers would want to do that and how many hardware OEM's would allow them to.
Android for me, is way below the hype and hoped and has to evolve beyond the 'Google' syndrome. Has a long way to go.
Having seen all the so called 'smart' OS out there, the iOS, RIM, Maemo 5, Android, Symbian .... I don't see much light in each of them.
The closest I could sense a potential was maemo 5, but the creator screwed it up with a ugly hardware and dropping it mid way for Meego...Would have to wait and see.
Now as a true 'consume'r...our choices have to be made on compromises that no perfect thing exists and chug along and play our major role in this so called 'Smart phone revolution' as chief financiers ever exploring for the near perfect one.
Apple to me, tried creating the near perfect one but as highlighted by you they only succeeded in locking down users within the walled garden. But to give them credit, the iphone(3gs/4) creates a consistent, reliable experience within the constraints it has. (Have never experienced a 'lag' 'force close' or equivalent in my experience of 1 year)...hmm hate being called a 'fan' boy
So to put it in simple words, did the 'smart' phone make my life simpler...Yes in some aspects but at a very important downside 'Time'(or money)...
- the time taken to root,
- time taken to lagfix,
- time taken to track all the JPO/JP6/JPU...and don't know how many more releases,
- time taken to flash,
- time taken to follow XDA....
Oh all these in already crowded day to day life to make my 'Smart' phone being 'smarter' !

That's total exageration, and from my experience, far from fact.. I don't recall lag ever impacting my ability to make calls.
The iPhones also have numerous problems. And honestly, the lag isn't THAT bad in my opinion. It's possible to make any phone start swapping, and I can cause lag on my computer too. It would be nice if it was reduced though. It's still a very productive phone though.

[Q] Is the Xperia Play worth Getting?

I am very hesitant in getting that phone, I've heard alot of good things and alot of bad things
I've seen specs and I've seen reviews, but I want to know people's personal opinion as they have the phone for full everyday use and not just reviewing it.
Is it worth it?
My advice do not go for it,you have better options for the same price.even if you are into gaming do not go for it...you can wait for NGP later and get dual core mobile now like galaxy s2/sensation/optimus 2x
I say go for it 4 sure. If you're like me who loves Zelda OOT, buy it! There is nothing like sitting on the subway while kids are playing their angry birds on their iphone while you sit there with your play and play Zelda or tekken 2 It's totally worth it!
everyday phone? Oh yeah! It works great!
Don't listen to that guy talking about dual core. You don't need it on a phone!! seriously, WHY would you need dual core? Everything i've tried on my play works like a charm!

^^^ I'm being sarcastic in my last post, in case the OP didn't catch that.
I'm very happy with my Play as a gaming phone and everyday phone. My wife has a Droid 3, and there isn't much difference at all, if any, in app performance and daily phone use. I have much better battery life as well. She has a better camera Maybe eventually apps will start taking advantage of multiple cores, but it's going to be a while.
You can't play this game on a touch screen very well...

It is very simple. How much do you value playing both Android-native and emulated games against the rest of features in a phone? If you really want to play games in a phone, this is your device.
If you don't value playing games over dual core CPUs, slick designs, gorgeous screens and feature-rich cameras, you're not the target for this device. It has a very specific niche, which Sony Ericsson has spent millions in digging out. It's a love-it-or-hate-it product, with little middle ground.
Oh, and it has an astonishingly precise GPS.
There are bad points about this phone but show me a perfect phone.
The best 2 things about this phone are obviously the control pad for 1 and the battery life, which has amazed me so far.
The only thing that I find annoying is the lack of decent games taking advantage of what is a great phone.
But I have to say I have started using emulators and they are quality, n64oid and fpse especially.
So to sum up its a great mix up between a gaming device and a smart phone. It is let down on the development side.
It all just depends on what you want if you like gaming I dont think you will be let down in purchasing this phone
Thats my two pennies anyway
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I have an xperia play and a few of my mates have dual core phones (SGS2, Optimus x2 e.t.c). I would not swap the Xplay for any of them.
As hairdewx has shown if you plan on playing anything with FPSE or emulators it is pointless on anything other than an xplay. The emulators alones let you play thousands of games with proper controls (makes it a 1000x better)
The speakers are the best on any phone. And the battery life is amazing to say this is a gaming device. Just using it as a normal phone it is as good as the rest.
I would recommend you get this phone. I think it will be hard for me to upgrade to a newer phone @ the end of my contract, unless it has proper gaming controls . (Xplay 2 hopefully)
Thanks guys I don't know I just might get it the only setback was the lack of an HD screen and the core issue but seems that the people who have the phone are enjoying it, I will see
Just wanted to give a perspective from someone who just bought the phone yesterday.
Waiting in the Verizon store I got the chance to mess with a few other phones. I actually played a couple games on some as well and just took an overall look. So to start lets forget the coolness of the control pad, and also that IMO playing games with motion/touch controls aside from something designed for it like Angry Birds absolutely sucks. Its why I seriously have not been into mobile gaming until now and I'm a big gamer. Just can't stand those controls.
Most of these new 4G dual core phones are huge. Seriously I was playing with one of the new 4G phones and the damn thing was like a doormat it was so big. Meanwhile the Xperia Play dimensionally is almost identical to my OG Droid, but space wise is designed better so that the 4" screen pushes to almost the edges of the device which uses space very well. Fits in my pocket WAY better than those 4G devices with a screen thats only 0.3" smaller.
Next up is speed. The OS is just as responsive on the Play as any of the 4G devices, I'm honestly not sure how much a dual core processor can help on a cellphone especially for normal every day tasks, with an OS that while multitasking, is not like a PC where you can physically have 2+ windows on screen at once. The way Android prioritizes memory, if you are using multiple apps at once, I just don't see there being a possibility of an everyday advantage. Needless to say, touch them side by side, there is NO difference in speed. Which brings me to games. I played a couple on the newer devices, they looked and played the same as on the Play, no faster, no better graphics, no nothing.
Finally would be features, ok so the camera is ok but not as good, 4G where available, is REALLY fast so thats nice as well and if you're in an area its common, and you have a need for that kind of speed, well then its something you should consider. And HDMI out, not on the Play. I personally have no use for it but if you do then theres another loss. So this comes to opinion - IMO the camera is good enough, it does the job, its a cell phone not a Canon. 4G? I live in the NY metro area basically where 4G service should be mostly available but its spotty, meanwhile WiFi is everywhere, and everywhere I'd sit and use it I have WiFi (my home, my folks house, my firehouse etc), when I travel I book hotels that have free WiFi, also my ISP provides open WiFi in many areas. Also I have no shame I use peoples open WiFi signals if I have to, so honestly I don't miss the speed there. 3G really isn't THAT bad either, however its a compromise, and I'm sure outside of this area it could be a problem for some. Then HDMI out, I bet I'd try it out for a novelty but I'd probably never use it. I have a PS3, I watch movies on my big screen from that or my PC with HDMI out.
And 2 things I've said above become an advantage for the Play, no 4G and no Dual core = better battery life.
So all in all I don't for a second regret the purchase, you get 95% of the performance of a 4G phone, with the advantage of better battery life, and the completely awesome built in control pad. If you want to game, its a no brainer.
When I saw the title of the thread I opened it to give my opinion about this phone. But when I read the previous answers, all that I wanted to say had already been said, so I gave up writing a big text because I don't have anything new to say!
Then I'll only say that it's an awesome phone, buy it without any fear, you won't regret it.

WTF! did you get a stable enough N64 emu (not to mention enough ram to run the rom) I have a GBA SNES NES GameGear and Genesis, but i cant find a good (preferably free at least till applanets back up) 64emu anywhere....and how are you running tekken two though all the psx emus crash cause of sony releasing this phone....oh and as long as you plan to plug the thing in everynight for like 8 hours (although 2.3.3 update fixes that a small amount if you dont game or browse or call or well pretty much emulate any sort of energy from it) than dont buy this phone really takes a commitment, i hate that i bought it then found out motorolla is releasing the droid 3(name changes between SP's) with HDMI out 1Ghz process 8mp cam rear and ii believie dont quote 3.2 front (might have been 2.3 or somewhere goin on memory of specs) THAT IS THE PHONE YOU WANT IF YOU ARE STILL LOOKING but release does depend on SP Bell got it first! havent folllowed up on it much just pisses me off that i bought a damn sony product over a 3ds.......oh and sorry if i repeated anyfacts
It is my favorite device. I just put in 2 hours of Beyond the Beyond without any awful on screen controls or bluetooth shenanigans.
Sound quality is spectacular too, as is the battery life.
The only thing that could use some improvement is the camera.
If you enjoy games more than just casually and really enjoy emulation, there is no other real option IMHO.

K Sound Agreed, Battery however i would like to know what miracle device you are using to keep it powered cause even with the 2.3.3 update which i wont le improved battery life significantly, i dont find its able to keep up with the demand especially noticable when streaming data i.e. skyFM or TuneInRadio(awsome app by the way for a phone with no FM reciever any radio station you could imagine....from all 7 contenent...yes there is a sat radio station based in antarctica for the 12 people that are ever there at one time, sheesh im Canadian and i say no thanks to that lol sorry off topic tired and ranting), and camera is decent quality 5.0mp front is only1.2 so self portraits are a little grainy i find, but none the less i have to agreee it could use more features to the actual cam its self

didnt know N64oid v2 was out thanks!, and as for the ps one emu i think i might just steal whatever games they release seeing as i pretty much bought a psone in a phone seems a little redundant to download a program on top of that....just cant wait to see if they find a way to release FFVII and VIII to the phone
Just get an android phone you like
to the guy who started this thread truely you just want an android phone PERIOD with it dominating over 50% of the smart phone generation other companies are trying to figure a way to eat a piece of googles pie....ie rumors which are now apparently confimed (which i havent seen first hand knowledge) but the iPhone 5(BOOO) is set to release with BBM installed, and we all know android with get it first probably for free with some sort if ad support....its like comparing a PS3 to Xbox360 its just not necessary 360 wins in every department like android.(minus blueray but you can obvi get a cheap one of those now to make up for it)

Haven't you pissed on this guy's thread enough? Then you come into a forum with people who are obvious playstation and Sony fans and say the Xbox360 "wins in every department" which is so untrue its not even funny but I'm not getting into that flame war here.
You don't seem to like the phone much, and you don't seem to like PS much, door is to the left, go buy another phone then.

Goodbye All....

Just wanted to so a big thanks for all the support/mods/tweaks everyone has provided for the Xperia Play in the 18 months in which I owned the device, Some very hard work put in so thank you!
The Play is now old, support is fading by the day and it's just too slow for most newer apps/games and feels dated and heavy so I decided to buy a new device and sell my Play.
I bought a second hand Galaxy S2 (which isn't even that new now), not looked back since, just wish I sold my Play ages ago now! i'm honestly amazed at what I have been missing out on by putting up with the Play for so long!
I now have a phone that doesn't lag, runs everything super fast, has jellybean and has tons of roms/kernals/support and good camera functions!!!! (touch to focus, face tracking, 360 panorama etc), and no more low storage and ram problems!! wish the Play had all this a year ago! that's the last time I EVER buy a Sony smartphone.......
Thanks everyone and to the developers/modders who made the Play that bit better! we had some good times! :good:

Sounds like you bought an Xperia Play for the wrong reason bro.
I moved from my Galaxy to my PLAY and will never look back, but then again I bought my PLAY specifically for gaming on the go, and the Galaxy couldnt fulfill that need!
As for ram and low space issues, rooted with link2sd sorts that all out a treat. 227 apps on phone and still 124mb internal space left and around 180mb free ram on stock rom!
Anyway mate, hope you enjoy the new phone. They are a great piece of kit and the screen is absolutely amazing. It was more vibrant than my missus' 4S!

Bascially, in a nuthshell Xperia PLAY is the phone for hardcore gamers like myself. We don't care how fast or slow it is we're just in it for the gamepad. Who agrees ? :good:
As an Android Smartphone..... It pretty much stinks constant calling, sms, work emails, personal emails would make my phone basicly stop and not work. I was ready to break it in half by 9am evey day but when I'd get a free sec. That would all change..... For me CTR and Super Mario World saved its life..... Now it rests in my bathroom where my Monthly issue of game informer used to sit..... And I could not be happier with it and will never sell it

A shame you've made that decicion.
I for my part do not even change anything, for the simple fact of having a partner gamepad as said above.
For the only thing that would change would be for a future Xperia Play 2.
And If I were to characterize buy another smartphone. Concervaria my current Xplay.
I'm buying the new LG Nexus 4, but I will keep my unactivated Verizon Play as gaming and music player. For the $80 I paid for it, there isn't any other devices come close that offer all its features.

This is exactly what I did. There is no better device, especially for emulators. The Android emulators run better and look better on 800x480 than even a PSP. The only device that might dethrone it could be the Vita at some point but that is really expensive right now and the hacking is more cumbersome and annoying than running apps on a phone. Emulators or games not designed for touch screen will never, ever be better on touch screen only phones. Even a lot of games designed for touch are better on the play because of an app like gamekeyboard which allows you to map touch controls to the Xperia Play buttons.

Thats what I use my Play for, forget about cell function it isn't a phone anymore its a gaming device, I use it to play Crash Bandicoot and other PS games, Gaming on my S3 is just a nightmare, I got Asphalt 7 free from samsung apps but you cannot use that screen, its annoying, I do miss the Play game pad on it but yeah, Now I just use my PS3 controller for some games, Wonder how long until a developer gets PS Mobile working on the S3, can't wait for that day!

That was the nicest and most awesome way to tell someone you reported them. I like it.
If your XPERIA is slow, try out my minimalist ROM. COLA ROM.
It will make your phone faster than a .223 bullet coming out of a Smith and Wesson AR-15
Anyways. I managed to score an Xperia play for 40$ this week off ebay (some sap didn't know the value of it)
It's really the best portable gaming device ever invented if you ask me.
Even the vita cant compete with it in specific aspects.
The xperia play is the dopest dope Ive ever smoked.
Too bad to see those kind of posts, well my play gave up on me for a month, burned my flex, had display issue... But... I so love my play, thats why I went to xperia center to get it fixed and ensured my play will have a 100% original parts. Now my play is back, running on stock kernel, ics by mark not overclocked yet running as smooth as it could. Only another play like device can replace my play. What im afraid of is when all good dev. Starts to move on more powerful devices. Anyway goodbye for you EX-Play user may you enjoy the new device that you have.

Do you recommend Nexus 7? Any drawbacks?

I'm looking into getting one, but I'm unsure whether to drop £199 on the 32GB one. I'm primarily going to be using it for games and movie watching, hence the extra money. Do you guys recommend it? I've used Android before obviously but just want something a little newer than my dinky WFS, for movies and such. I've heard bad things about 4.2 on them too...

I got a 32GB last week and use it primarily for games, watching movies, reading ebooks and web browsing. The Nexus 7 does all these things very well. For movies, it may depend on what app you are using, especially if you want to be able to play different file formats. I use MX Player, which is free from the market and it has played everything I've thrown at it. The one thing I still am unsure about is battery life when it comes to gaming. I've never had a problem in this regard, but I also don't play any games for longer than an hour at a time. The size is nice and compact, but still big enough for my needs.

Carphone warehouse are doing the 32GB for £179, and don't worry, 4.2 is just fine, a couple of minor quirks, but nothing to get too excited about. It's easily the best 7in tablet on the market right now, regardless of price, totally killing the Kindle Fire HD and iPad Mini, in build quality, screen quality, performance and looks.

Android Police wrote an article about some of the issues that 4.2 has, but I guess after asking a group who own the device, its a non-issue. Gotta love XDA haha I'm cooking up a ROM for the WFS based off AOSP, if its good enough ill post and port

I have a N7 32gb and a P100 Sprint GTab 7" that I recently updated to CM10.
I haven't played Dead Trigger on the GTab but it plays great on the N7. Overall the GTab still runs great with JB 4.1 and I couldn't see replacing the GTab for the N7. The N7 is a GREAT device but so is the GTab.
Moving to a N7, you'll losing a back camera, cellular (unless you buy the 3G model), and SD Card Slot. All that + $200 for just a better CPU/GPU? Tough choice.
Well if you like to play with custom roms then i would tell you to stay away from nexus 7 , it doesnt have a SD card slot which now i realize is a big drawback.
Want to flash a different ROM??? BAM have to delete everything on your N7 all data everything , there is no such thing as a full wipe which doesnt wipe your own data. After buying N7 i have sworn never to buy anything that doesnt have external SD you will spend so many hours just restoring data , you will want to throw the tab to a wall. MTP??? well thats a joke , transfer speeds are so slow you would actually regret your decision of putting in another ROM . Plus its really awkward having a thumb drive hanging hanging from your tab all the time since you have a tablet with just 13 GB storage. I am really regretting my investment in this Tablet .
Want to hear more problems???
* Automatic brightness is completely bonkers.
* Had to install a software Tegra Prism just so that i can watch HD videos, screen dims out to completely black if you dont have that software installed and this is also for games not just HD videos.
If i were you i would invest my money in something else. next years nexus 7 maybe , but this one's a real disappointment for me.

Now I haven't flashed ROMs onto my 7, but I don't think what you're saying about wiping all data is correct. My galaxy nexus didn't have external storage and I flashed ROMs, wiped data, and I never lost data on phone(pictures, files on SD card, etc).

You can turn off automatic brightness. Which is always a smart thing to do to save some battery anyways.
And you don't know what you're talking about on the data wipe. Wiping data and system does not touch /sdcard
Your issues are user error.
Any nexus device is absolutely the best and easiest thing to mod. Its a single click to unlock, root, recovery, etc. You really can't mess it up.
I am a bit of a flashaholic when it comes to ROMs and kernels. I use titanium backup and don't even bother using my otg flash drive. Not had any problems restoring apps after a ROM wipe.
As for the 7 I too felt a bit wary dropping to a smaller screen from my old tablet, but this really is so much more fun when gaming and just about everything I throw at it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
So you guys do not wipe /data or ever tried factory reset of the the tab while installing a ROM with a different base ?? And I really dont understand if you enabled root cause even that completely wipes data ????? I dont know if you guys really know what you are talking about ....
Oh yeah if you are comparing N7 to GNex ... Please check this forum .... You will understand what I am talking about
Definitely recommend nexus 7. I bought the 32gb version a couple weeks ago while my laptops down with the mindset that tablets aren't for me and I'd just play with it a couple days then return. Not happening. Only drawback is it takes so much of my time now, I don't want to put it down.
Its by far my favorite electronic device to date. As for smartanks list of drawbacks, I always do clean installs of ROMs anyway so data wipe is normal (though I'm actually happy with stock now and haven't flashed a ROM since my G'nex got 4.2). You want the 32gb so you'll end up with 27gb of storage, not 13. Automatic brightness never does a good enough job, that's why there's quick settings to a brightness slider. And you already (as do I) use MX player for movies.
As for dead trigger, plays and looks excellent on this amazing device.

I think about 13 was available? A quick google might answer that question more precisely I'm not using the phone for music or lots of movies. I don't expect to run into difficulties in that area.
16gb is plenty,
NEXUS 4 USER
To be honest, 16GB is too much space for me. I have around 1.3 gigs of my dev stuff, some apps (NFS Most Wanted People complain all the time about how they need 32/64GB of storage but the only reason I can think of needing that much is for music and movies. You can stream those as well so it's not a big deal.

16GB is probably enough for most, but you can always get a wifi storage device if you need more.
i just bought a pqi air drive and put a 32GB class 10 sd card in it for movies/ music etc.

First of all, I don't own nexus 4 but a galaxy s3 with expendable micro sd slot. But I do want to get nexus 4 as well!!
From my personal usage, 16gig is simply not enough. I play lots of heavy games most of them from gameloft, each will take >1gig space and I do shot pictures videos and have tons of other applications installed as well.
I put videos, pictures and musics on sd card but still, only 2.3gig left on internal storage.
I know maybe vanilla android will be smaller than touchwiz but considering >10gig video and pictures that I have, 16gig just won't be enough .
Of course, you may not be like me and can use cloud storage. In the end, it's how you use your phone for the most, and regardless nexus 4 or other phones, it will be the same.

I've not installed any games yet, but I imagine once I do, the space will begin to go quickly. Music I'm less worried about, I stream mainly from YouTube etc. Video recording will be interesting though.
I would have preferred an SD card option, just because it's a fallback. An SD model would have probably convinced me to go for an 8GB N4, but no SD meant I had to go for the 16GB one.
The lack of OTG on this phone is a worry, but at the end of the day, considering the relative ubiquity of WiFi/3G internet in most developed countries, I don't think it's a big problem for streaming video, music etc, so really it's just games and what not that might be the struggle. I'm thinking of setting up a dropbox, (First time for me) which would be good for videos, and music and what not. I'm just not convinced of the price thats all. 2GB isn't very much, and as I have a pretty unlimited web server I could take advantage of that.

First of all, I don't own nexus 4 but a galaxy s3 with expendable micro sd slot. But I do want to get nexus 4 as well!!

I m coming from SGS3 16Gb+32Gb mem card.
And I had to adjust. I have some music (had to choose what I m not listening to too often, haha).
About 1.5 Gb of nandroid+5/600 mb of rom and flashable stuff.
I ve had to stop walking around with whole seasons of TV, that s for sure But it's doable.
In the end, no matter how much space you do have, it ll get filled up with things that you don't actually need, so that s OK to pick and chose I ve got to say that I m not having any issue thinking about apps or not, I just get all in there and it fits!
So that s my experience, all in all, you have to think how to adjust, cause you ll have to do so.
Also, cloud storage? I ve got 1.8 Gb of data/month on my plan so yeah, that won't work. Since it s not when I m near Wi-Fi that I need to be mobile !
I wanna say that before I had the Nexus 4 I was thinking that 8GB is more than enough! And in my country there is only the 16GB version but boy I am glad that this was the case! On 16GB you have 12.92GB (don't ask me why theres 3GB less I don't know how system can take more than 1GB) and on 8GB you have only 5.67GB!
Now i have like 2,5GB free space left on my 16GB version! It is okay I wouldn't mind having more space though I didn't have any problems yet. But I noticed some games are very big if you are a games 16GB might be too small (I'm no gamer though most of my space is taken by music).
AW: Any felt the need of sd card yet?
My storage was full. but after getting rid of all the junk.. old roms etc it was ..ok:thumbup:

It has been a compromise for me. I'm also a musician and like to carry my entire music collection with me. I wasn't a fan of using the cloud because when I'm underground in the subway and I want to hear a song and if it's not cached I'm screwed. It has taken a bit of adjustment. I have a 32GB GS3 with a 64GB card and between music, videos, movies, pictures I filled more than half of the 64gb card.
I also don't have as many apps installed on my N4. I've definitely had to scale things down a bit. Although, I am having an easier time dealing with it then I thought I would.
I have 8gb and what I miss from my s2 (16gb + 32gb sdcard) is all the backups, roms I had.. Besides that, everything is fine
I bought the 16 GB version and haven't needed one yet. I ended up buying a 32GB Nexus 7 which is mainly used for heavy games like Vice City and NFS, leaving me with quite a bit of storage left on my Nexus 4. I stream all my music from Google play since I have unlimited data and Wi-Fi is pretty much everywhere I go.

Any comments on the performance compared to S3? physically as well? I know that adreno 320 is much better than the mali 400 but by how much?

use google music. even when i used sd i couldnt put my collection on it, i had to cut it in half. with gm i have my entire collection with me whereever i go. i live in two countries with long travels in between without connection - its as easy as tapping on the stuff i wanna listen to while being offline. you can make it even easier if you use playlists. i wasnt sure about cloud either but the way i see it, it works pretty well. i'd even say better than cutting my collection in half to fit 32gb.

I've been using GM. The only thing that sucks is sometimes I will be underground in the subway and feel like hearing a song out of the blue. If it's not a song that is cached then I'm out of luck.

Yeah I did. But I don't know if I'd want to carry it around with me. For that I could just carry my GS3 with me
I really was turned off by the lack of storage on the N4(I wasn't going to get one for that only reason) but I'm making due. If anything it keeps me on top of keeping my phone tidy and organized because instead of just leaving everything on the SD card I now clean it out every couple days to remove stuff taking up space. And instead of having like 50 games installed I only have the ones I'm currently playing installed
isn't there a way to unscrew the thing and replace the inner one? I think there's an inner sd card which can be replaced...I mean, my friend has htc mozart and it also doesn't have a proper slot for external card however if one unscrew the back, there's a card deep inside which can be replaced with a bigger one...Isn't it the same with Nexus 4?
For me 16 GB is plenty of space, the only thing I miss the SD slot for is easy transfer of files. I don't have to plug the phone in to transfer files.
I haven't tried the NFC / BT or WIFI (can;t use in corporate network) for file transfers.
Other than that I have been very happy with this phone, no root, stock ui, I am loving it.

I have my nexus 7 for the movies and honestly I don't understand people watching movies on a tiny screen.
I also don't understand people who "knows" more than 2500 songs.
And the ones who can play 5 different game loft games on a daily basis.
So 12 isn't enough for obsessive compulsive people who has to have everything with them.
I bet they carry a huge bag stuffed with stuff as well. In case they suddenly happen to go on a holiday or something.
