I see it has been done for the international version I9000, but our buttons are different. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772672
I think it would be great if the home key backlight pulsed on notification.
Anyone know how to implement something like this?
A small led pulsing would go a long way toward saving my precious battery life, instead of periodically turning the screen on to check for new messages.
Yes. There is backlight notification mod for our phone. However, I tried several versions(10-32seconds) and could not get the backlight to turn off until I cleared the notification. I believe it only works with certain kernels and ROMs.
It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826278
I have that installed, it just keeps the lights on longer for the softkey buttons.
What I would like to see is one of the softkeys like home pulse with the screen off when a new notification arrives, like the nexus one trackball notifications.
Anyone?
birdman's "barebones" kernel in this very forum supports backlight notifications
I have a handful of kernels on rom manager that support bln also
please stop posting questions in the dev forums!!!
Where would you suggest the question be posted. It's not a general question and it's not a theme/app...maybe BLN is now an accessory?

How about instead of posting questions that are already answered... you search. Much easier for everyone else to deal with.

What is this "attitude" crap? You're the one breaking the rules of the forum. Don't ***** when people point this out.

hop on rom manager and look under jt1334 in the downloads section..
Maybe if the search function here worked I would have found the answer to my question. I obviously dont post much so I seem to know how to be resourceful.
In this case I thought we could all benefit in getting some sort of proper notification system working on the Fascinate. The kernel mod seems to light up all the keys then go out 30 seconds later. I was wondering if it was possible to just get the "home" button to pulse like it did on my nexus one (obviously not in color).
Sorry I am not a dev, I have a life outside of android, windows mobile, and IOS, but I am definately not a noob.
Anyway its been nice chatting with all of you open minded developers working on this open platform. Mods please close this thread as it seems the developers just want to be rockstars in their own little threads, and scream "search!!!" and "noob" in all the others.
Thanks for all your help...
Don't bite the hand that feeds...
XDA is a Developers forum - not a tech support forum. There are dozens of other android forums on the Internet for that. The developers here share their work for free here and grow tired of answering the same questions over and over. The Development Forum is getting so overrun with non-development threads that it's hard to find ROM, Kernel, and App releases.
EDIT: In fact it's grown so bad that some developers aren't even releasing there work here anymore. That is why you received a "lecture".
I dont think I bit any hand, I said I appreciated the work jt did on the clean rom, and in fact I am using it right now. I think a lot of these guys on the forum are brilliant and I dont generally ask for help or any type of hand holding. Im a big boy with a job and I take chances, if I kill a phone so be it, thats why I have insurance and a warranty.
I just wanted to start a discussion and see if an idea of mine was feasable. I must have asked the wrong question, at the wrong time, in the wrong forum. -Sorry guys!
Man, and I thought the ios guys were douchebags, I guess douchebagginess is carrier dependent here since I never had a problem in the Nexus One forums. Go Verizon!

"Sorry guys" --- then you go about calling us douchbags? or did i read this wrong? There is a little X button towards the top right of the screen.... press it.
I didnt call you anything, but this is getting childish. Someone delete this thread please.
blah........
There seems to be some confusion here so allow me to answer the question and end the cat fight in one shot. There are in fact TWO different backlight mods for the Fascinate. The one you currently have is the Extended Softkey Backlights, which simply extends the amount of time your softkeys stay lit during normal operation. There is also a mod called Backlight Notifications, which does exactly what you are asking for. It is implemented in jt1134's kernels, amongst others.
As for posting location, the others are correct that this question should have been posted in general, not dev. There was just a major post from the mods specifically about this issue.

Thank you for taking the time to clear things up gardndj, will definately check out the backlight notification mod.
Now that this is in the right place, I should note that you don't want the standalone BLN mod, which is i9000-only. You need one of jt1134's kernels with BLN built in, which are only available on ROM manager.

I've been endlessly scouring this section of the forums for the last few weeks trying to figure out which rom would work best for me. There is one problem though, I can't for the life of me figure out which things work/do not work in each of the major roms. It's really important to me that nothing/minimal is broken in a rom that I choose. I'm hoping to make and maintain a list of specifically what does NOT work in each rom to help make the choices easier to sift through. The 1st posts of official rom threads usually have some things listed, but reading through the (million page) threads yields more issues.
The only problem, however, may be that most people are using a different combo of kernal/rom/hardware which obviously changes things, so I'm hoping to try and sift through that too. Perhaps make some tables to make it easier.
The Evo rom wiki has tables but only outlines basic functions.
*Mods: thought long and hard about which section to put this in, I think it's best served here.
*Devs: I'd love personal input here if possible. Thanks.

Just sayin. This section is supposed to be for posting ROMs and development related items.
I'm not a mod so It's up to them, but, this should be in Q&A.

Well, it is directly related to ROMs and development, but yeah if this isn't the right section please move it.
I totally understand the problem your having though. It's a bit unorganized but it's partially because of the vast development community that the Evo has. There is a wiki at the top of this section that might grant a little more insight. I don't know if it's exactly what your looking for.
P.S.
I do like to play "forum police" though I'm not a mod. I can understand why you posted here and it wasn't a blatant disregard for the rules. So no biggy to me anyway. The reason I get pissed is because it's already so cluttered that more threads make it that much harder.
You have to look in the OP of each thread in the android decelopement section and choose based on what you need from your phone and what you want. Myn's warm twopointtwo works perfectly for a sense rom and there is a cyanogenmod 7 beta with ewimax out now. So it has everything but HDMI working for a gingerbread aosp rom
Well here are some tips for you:
If it's a stock based Sense rom then everything should work unless the dev is an idiot.
If it's an AOSP rom then everything but hdmi and 4g should work (and 4g actually has a fix and can be made to work now)
If it's a port of another rom then hdmi, 4g, and typically the camera won't work (but this usually gets fixed). Sometimes various sensors aren't working properly either (like orientation)
We take a stock Rom and a stock kernel and twist the hell out of it way beyond its means and then ***** about what works and what does not!

I had the same problem as you a while back. In my opinion, if you are rooted you have already done the hard work. You now have a custom recovery with nandroid, a godsend, which you can use to fall back on if anything were to go wrong. My advice would be to just take the plunge. Grab a handful of ROMS that sound suitable to your needs and start to flash them. If you get stuck in bootloops or the ROM isn't what you want, all you have to do is nandroid and start over. I would recommend to give each ROM at least 2 battery cycles before you decide. On my setup, it seems to take a bit to "settle in". I think if you tried to make tables of ALL possibilities it would be mind boggling to sift through.
I realize this isn't a direct answer to your question, its just my thoughts. Hope it helps and good luck!

To the Op, If its sense based, nothing will be broken. If the rom is AOSP, then 4G and HDMI are broken, however Cyanogenmod is the only AOSP rom with a semi-functional 4G. Also if the rom is Gingerbread 4G, and HDMI are broken, and likewise again, Cyanogenmod 7 is the only Gingerbread mod with a semi-working 4G. The way the ROM's work right now unless its an alpha wimax ROM for AOSP, then flashing a different kernel won't affect the features of the ROM, unless you forgot to wipe before flashing. You can simplify your list down to 2 categories Sense and AOSP, if its SENSE everything works, if its AOSP, 4g and HDMI are broken, and under the AOSP you can list the 2 Alpha releases of wimax for Cyanogen.
Simply put, if you want everything to work, then try these Sense based Roms:

Learn manners please KINGS, the guy thought he had the correct section, and apologized if it was the incorrect section and requested it be moved. If you don't like it don't post in it, he was already informed by others that it was the incorrect section, and then you had to try and jump down his throat about it.
Your posts are composed like they belong to a 12 year old kid googling words to sound older. You can't blame it on auto-correct, I use my EVO to compose a-lot of text messages and the words are never misspelled because I proof read what I type with it, so that I don't come across jabbering like an idiot.
And yes i realize my retort back at Kings is completely contradictory to what I had just typed.
Thanks so much. I was just trying to help the 'tweeners' in my position, those who have some but not too much experience with roms. And the entire reason I even asked/bothered to offer my time was because each ROM thread has numerous issues that are hard to decipher as being general widespread issues, or single isolated issues, and the process of sifting through gargantuan threads is pretty tedious.
small example: some roms have keyboard display issues
But I digress
edit
And to eVoKings, yeah it's awesome that you take a kernel and rom and twist the hell out of it, but in the end I'm the one using the kernel/rom and still want it to be fully functional (and everybody has a different definition of what exactly that constitutes). I'm honestly surprised at the amount of people who actually THANK devs, it's great. But you have to learn to take criticism too (even if it's free)
does the custom rom track user data? do any custom roms track the user data ie pictures or internet browsing? also how do you get the horizontal lock screen like the one that is on the iphone?
I'm trying to help you not get flammed..go to the development section, look at the ROM you are wondering about and ask in the appropriate areas. Your question is to vague so no real answer will be given. Seeing at this is your first post, you will hear "use search" alot so get used to it but really, use the search function and search for your answers. Learn more about ROMS in general and take time to study and then ask..
Good luck
Yea lol. Unfortunately, it is best not to ask any questions on this site at all. Someone will flame you regardless.
I don't know the answers to your questions, but, you might be able to try widgetlocker for the lockscreen.

You can ask questions, as long as you put then in the appropriate area. This obviously has to do with a specific rom, and should have been asked in that roms thread.
And the question about the lock screen has been answered a hundred times. There is no need to make a new thread when he could have just searched
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
and the title of this thread looks more like a statement, instead of a question. just saying.
Instead of using four posts to flame the guy, wouldn't it have been "cleaner" to just answer his simple questions and be done with it? This is the GENERAL forum after all. Those are very GENERAL questions.
1. To my knowledge, roms are NOT tracked. there are applications you can get that'll show you all incoming/outgoing data and see where it's going. This should tell you. The alternative, just like they said, is to ask the developers directly. From what I've seen, they take pride in their reputation and wouldn't jack with a rom just to track pictures of your family
2. Get WidgetLocker. It's $1.99 in the Market (if i remember correctly) It has a built-in setting for the iphone unlocker. If you need assistance with it, PM me. I'll do what i can!
cheers.

Last i knew, forum rules didn't allow users with less than 10 posts to post in the development section. Therefore he wouldn't have been able to post anywhere but here or the q and a section. He was fine with where he decided to post.
And i doubt miui tracks your data.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I do know that some chinese apps like GO SMS and Miren Browser seem to have some sort of tracking. I've used a packet sniffer and have noticed a lot of calls from/to IP addresses originating from China.
In GO SMS's case, it happens every time an SMS is received, which is quite alarming since SMS does not use data at all.
I haven't had the time to look into this , so there's no need to freak out just yet. I'll see if I can do more testing later this week. Remember, nothing conclusive yet...Just slightly alarming
ionno bout miui but i'd be more worried about carrier iq....
I doubt it you could always run a firewall and see what is trying to come in and out. Also there are apps on the market that can cause spam and track data you kinda take a gamble. Things that want root priv's and so on like a game etc.
There alot of hackers and so on from china and russia that's been going on for years tho. H
Also the guy didn't post it in the Q&A section so ya it's in the wrong forum. Too many people flame the newbie's for things If someone intentionally posted a question in the dev section or wrong fourm then they need to be flagged if it's way off topic. Gotta give the new guy some slack he is a noob lol.
Alright, I noticed something in the wiki that I think should be fixed. The Epic 4g page is horrendously out of date: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700 So I figured this will help get the page organized and updated. ROM Developers Post your already existing ROMs, as well as kernel dependencies and the Samsung build (Such as: EC05) they were built off of. Please Include whether or not they are OC/UC capable as well as UV/OV capable. Kernel Developers, please post your kernel Name and a link to the thread containing your kernel. Include what builds they are compatible with (ex: EC05)
DON'T FORGET VERSION NUMBERS
Please keep it to ONE KERNEL or ONE ROM per post.
FOR EVERYONE WHO POSTS KERNELS OR ROMS
Include special features and version numbers. Post all versions, one by one, to help the developers!
As this is a wiki page, anyone can help out by starting to update the lists
Thanks for your help!

Reserved for (more) ROMs
reseved for Kernels
There's a post in general that had most of what you ate asking for I can't engender if out has the eh17 stuff our not though. I believe the user name that posted out was Mr. Timm.
I do appreciate the effort though.

If the rom developers wont update the wiki, why would they take the time to post here? You'd be better off looking through the forum and putting it in their yourself
Nice thread but I don't think developers will update this.
Developers want to start their own threads and monitor how much traffic their threads receive. I guess this can help them with their development careers.
Sooo....
This was meant to get everyone caught up. there are so freaking many great ROMs in the dev forum for the epic 4g. Lots of these need testing and such to speed the actual developers along. The problem is, only a handful of the up to date ROM's and kernels are located where people can just look and find them lined up (the wiki). And If we have to search to find a thread, to find all of the other threads, its not working very efficiently, cutting out what was meant to do that in the first place. If you want a look to see how ours SHOULD look, but hasnt been updated to, just check out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
in comparison to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SPH-D700-Community_ROMs
I just personally think that we can do better than we are over here in the epic 4g section, and maybe with all the ROMs listed together, we might get some more collaboration as our devs look up their friendly competition. I am just trying to help out in the small ways.

You think that using this info would help get this thread lit up? if people see what i have and try to complete my list? or is this hopeless. I REALLY wanna get this list expanded and maybe get all the stuff that is missing from ACS's Autoupdater filled in. because there is so much stuff missing. Which is reason number two for this thread.
---------- Post added at 06:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:58 PM ----------
on second thought, reading this post.... maybe I will Just beg ACS to start adding the stuff as downloadable in ACS.
Well in my opinion it's a lost cause. What would really help your thread if you included a review of each rom, kernel, theme, tweak, etc from well known testers (John Corleone). But that would be A LOT of work.
Umm. With the ACS updater a dev permission is needed for their work to be shared.
What XDA need is a working search button so when a subject relating to a topic is searched random ish is not brought up.
If you're trying to write an review for each Rom start a thread in the General section asking for a in depth review of Roms nd stuff on the wiki.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
okay, you people have missed the point by miles. I do want this to get done, and it doesn't have to be the ACTUAL dev. anyway. i am soon to quit, and just use the ERA list that got linked to, and i will TRY to start updating the wiki. Even though most of you did not help me what so freaking ever, you still get thanks. because i am just in that kind of mood.
Just curious. Thinking of buying one of these to replace my deceased MXP.
How is the custom ROM quality? Often something is a little wonky like the cameras or some sensors/inputs don't work or are a little funky or slow. It's hard to pick up the current state of ROMs from browsing the forums. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
HEY Mods! If one of you happens to notice this, please move thread to Q&A. I swear Chrome ate that section when I first browsed this device's forum page. Apparently I can't report my own thread. I'll show myself out.
I think the only thing that doesn't work currently is the "ok Google" hot word.
I personally haven't used any of them yet.
