My nexus 7 screen is COMPLETELY unresponsive. Had the unit turned off. Turned it on, went to unlock my encryption, screen does not respond to any touch. My unit is unlocked/rooted. I have already done factory reset/wipe data. Running 4.2.2. Anyone have any ideas? Please help!!

Had you experienced the touchscreen working intermittently before it stopped completely? It could be the software, as mentioned above, but I know this model is particularly fussy if the ribbons get even just a bit loosened at the connectors. They have to go all the way in or no-go. Subjecting the tab to any kind of shock, no matter how slight, might produce that effect. If it's out of warranty, I'd suggest you pop out the back and try reseating the double-pronged cables. If not, well, you know what to do. Good luck.

Please forgive my ignorance, I am still learning on a curve here. What is a kernel, (I know it is something that every operating system has), where do I get one, and how do I 'flash' it?
Thanks for getting back with me!

No, I never had a problem with it, as far as the screen goes. I did notice that it wasn't picking up my wifi very well the night before though.....
After opening the back, I fail to see what "double-pronged cables" you are referring to. Do you mean the black, red, white, and yellow wires? If so, those are already still plugged in.
Thanks for helping me!
I am now trying to unroot and relock bootloader. Problem is, I can't get my device INTO bootloader!!!!
Any ideas how to unroot and relock bootloader without being in bootloader?

I was referring to the flat amber ribbons that connect to the mainboard by the edge of the tab. They are the ones coming out of the digitizer in front that registers your touches.

Update, got into bootloader. Unrooted. But I cannot get the unit locked again using Wug's Toolkit. I can't enable USB debugging. Are there any shortcuts around this? If I can get it locked, I can ship it back to ASUS!

Hi, deejinfla...
You don't need a functional touchscreen to re-lock the Bootloader.
Further, USB debugging isn't needed either.
All you need is FASTBOOT.
The command syntax for re-locking the Bootloader is...
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Here's how...
Shut down your Nexus 7.
Reboot into the Bootloader by pressing VolDown+PowerOn.
Connect your Nexus 7 to your PC via USB.
On your PC, open a COMMAND PROMPT window on whichever folder your FASTBOOT and ADB executables are located.
Type fastboot oem lock
This will re-lock the Bootloader.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Look at the attached thumb - you need to lift the rectangular black pad off. The ribbon connectors are underneath. Be gentle with the pad, peel it very slowly. Once you get to the connectors, gently (again!) lift the white back tabs up so they stand at 90% with the connector bases, then insert something non-metal ( a toothpick) under the ribbons and slide them out SLOWLY with an outward motion. Reconnect them again, and make sure the white marks on the ribbons at least touch the base (black part) of the connectors. If they don't, you won't have good connection. Do not use any amount of force until the ribbons are halfway in (they should slide in easily if you angle them right); otherwise you'd bend the tiny pins inside the connectors! It's an easy thing to do. You just have to be a bit patient and make sure the environment is well-lit. Good luck.
The best way to envision is to google "nexus 7 teardown." Spend 3 minutes going through an image gallery, then you'd know what to do.
My unresponsive screen was fixed by pressing on the center of the back of the tablet. I heard a small pop and the screen was fixed. I think the connector had become dislodged.

Hi!
I recently noticed that an area of my HTC Desire Z's Touch Screen is dead. It might be related to me dropping the phone accidently about 1 meter on the ground, but I didn't immediately notice the effect.
You can find a video of my symptoms here:
youtube.com/watch?v=bHB41nXtwns
(Sorry, I can't use a direct link since this is my first post here)
Which part of the phone could be defect, according to the symptoms? The digitizer? Even more? Are there maybe any workarounds I could try to get it working again?
What I tried so far is turning the phone off, removing the battery, turning it back on (no difference). Also, I tried with and without a charger connected and with and without touching the phone's body to establish a common ground level (so not the usual touch screen problems here).
Thanks in advance!
If there's a screen protector on, try removing it and see if it behaves differently.

There is no screen protector on it. The device is unmodified with regards to hardware / accesoires.
It could be a loose ribbon cable, tear down the phone and reattach the cable that goes to the screen, or call in a warranty.

I advice not to do this... first call your mobile carrier. Tell them about your issue, try to get it replace if possible. Tear downs should only be done if that's the last option you have...
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
just get a replacement and dont tell them what happened
I didn't buy the phone from a carrier but from amazon.co.uk. I wanted to avoid using warranty because it's a lot of trouble (phone needs to be sent to the UK, i need to S-ON and restore the original ROM/recovery firmware first, phone will probably be away for some weeks).
As it's only a minor issue, I would try to repair it myself (I'm confident that I can do that). What I am looking for is just a hint with which I can confirm that it's just the digitizer so I don't order the wrong replacement part and have to open/close the phone several times.

I'd recommend against that, as its still under warranty. Its too easy to mess something up when you do-it-yourself, and you would void the warranty.
I had been having major proximity sensor issues as of late, and decided to open the back of the phone and clean the sensor, no big deal right? Wrong. I had done this many times for people but of course on my personal phone, I mess something up. After reassembly and booting, I have a thing green line going from the top of my screen to the bottom. It is there all the time, whether on a boot screen, recovery, boot animation and obviously when the phone is on. Does anyone have an idea as to what the hell I did? I think it has to be some ribbon cable got touched and I need to unplug and plug it back in. Any ideas? Thanks
i tried disconnecting the digitizer/screen ribbon cable and reconnecting, no change. I did step 12, image 2

I'd guess you're boned if removing the ribbon cable didn't fix it, or at least change it. I'd think if that was the issue then at worst you'd end up with the line moved to a different part of the screen.
How much did you take the device apart to get to the proximity sensor? You shouldn't have had to go near the screen, and been able to leave it firmly locked in place.

it was literally taking the back cover off, taking the screw off that holds the proximity cover on and moved the sensor. it was all done within a couple of minutes. no major disassemble. I didnt disconnect any ribbon cables or anything like that. so frustrating

i mean idk how i feel about it since I clearly did it somehow..but damn man. I have done this many times before and of course on my own phone, something happens
So first off, i know that Android L is a developer preview and would have some issues here or there. some apps would crash and what not, I got that. i have had L on my Nexus 7 since day 2 with minimal problems at all. Last night at work i turned my tab on to find a static screen and nothing worked. i could hear it unlocking, but it was just static. after about an hour trying to get some of the screen, it came too but with all the colors off and running extremely slow. When I say slow, I mean i would press an app and it would take anywhere from 3-9 minutes to pop up if at all. I can't get it to go into the bootloader to get back to 4.4.3 or anything. As of right now, this Nexus is rendered useless to me and I HATE THAT!!!! if anyone has any insight for me i would appreciate it. Thanks

That is a loose ribbon cable that causes the static screen. You can remove the rear cover, using a fingernail, & disconnect the battery, press the ribbon cable into place, & then reconnect & reboot. You can check out the dismantling guide, or the "Possible touch screen fix" thread". No seals are broken & it is fairly simple to do. But that is how you know it is HW, not SW related. If it were SW, bootloader or recovery would work. I had this same issue along with touch screen issues, months ago & that's how I fixed both issues.
Oh awesome, I'll try that out when I get back home. Thanks for the quick response

Hello peeps,
I had just recently got this phone, its been 2 months exact and yesterday this happened. It was upside down when it rolled over it (was on the road), I was surprised to know that its back merely seems damaged (see pictures to have better idea).
- Speaker seems to be working fine. (SIM working in it!)
- LED indicator is blinking too and working as it should.
- It turns on/off without any problem.
- The power and volume buttons are also working fine.
I had lock screen passcode on so can't access the data, but it connects to computer fine. I wonder if replacing the display and screen digitizer will be the only things I need to make it work.
PS : I had no screen protector/back case or anything on it.
EDIT 1 : Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones.
EDIT 2: Data accessed!!

Please keep us informed if you find any damage other than the screen and back.
Wow sorry about that but also glad to see how it was able to withstand a beating like that :banghead:
Make a youtube video. It might go viral if you can show it still works ie: sound phone call. You might make enough money to buy a new phone.

If you had usb debugging enabled, you can completely remove the lockscreen and access your data. There is a reddit post detailing how to do it step by step. Please Google because I don't have a bookmark. I did this to my Z3 when i got damaged. If you didn't have USB debugging enabled, you'll have to find some hack to do that before attempting.
Also replacing the screen and maybe the digitizer (if damaged) should get your phone back up and running.

Hey if USB debugging was not enabled, you might have to find a way to do it. And I did try doing some Google search but couldn't come across anything! Really sorry but the thread was on Reddit and you should probably search for it there. I'm not sure of the exact keywords I used!
Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones. I can try entering the pattern now, but I don't remember if I had to like swipe after pressing the power button or double tapping the screen or it was just the code straight away after pressing the power button or tapping the screen, could someone please help me with the two options as how they work and also just send screenshot of the lock screen with pass code on so I have the idea about it and all?
EDIT : @thedisturbedone : I managed to pull the lock away as touch screen is working haha!
Is there anyway possible that I can use it via PC? Asus PC link requires the app running in background. Also anyway possible to backup the contacts now?

Hey there, thanks for sharing...been away on Thanksgiving. You want to save your data? Hmm...good question. Here's what I would try to do:
- Contacts should be backed up in Google - so no worries there...you can access via. http://contacts.google.com I think
- Connect the phone to PC, Install ASUS PC Link. You should have the app running on the phone.
- I would then try to drag all the files you need to your computer,
- Or the other thing you can do is if the information is crucial....And I don't promote doing this, and this is not an official ASUS fix...because you will void your warranty..sooo anything issue that happens is on you and ASUS will not help you if something goes wrong...is to root your device, install Titanium Backup, and use that to save all your data (apps and everything) into Google Drive, or Dropbox. Then, you can restore that data back to your phone when it's fixed.
What about micro USB to HDMI and then follow on the big screen what you're doing?
@ASUS_Khang : I wanted to have your attention for the giveaway thing as my story is all posted here. Thanks for the input anyway.

I have recovered the data from the phone itself, the remaining things are notes/contacts which I can't do via connecting the phone to PC now and I had backed up contacts already so no worries.
Haven't read the whole thread, not sure what your plans are, but thought I'd share a recent experience.
My wife knocked her phone off a table at a restaurant a few weeks ago. Landed on the corner when it hit the tile floor. Screen shattered. Was still usable, but bits of glass were flaking off.
I ordered her a new screen & digitizer from amazon. Took about 3 weeks to show up. I replaced it using a plastic spudger tool I had from an old iPhone screen replacement kit, and some patience. The screen replacement kit I ordered came with some double sided tape to reseal everything. Took about 90 minutes to complete as I was taking my time. The replacement went flawlessly and you can't even tell her screen has been replaced. I'd recommend trying that before replacing the phone, unless you want to.

Happy new year everybody,
I have a screen issue. Sometimes half of the screen is static/white noise (see attachment (not my pic, but issue is same)).
It is a hardware issue.
I contacted ZTE and they are willing to replace it.
But i have custom ROM installed on it.
Do you think this will be an issue for them?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply.
Yes it also has the static in recovery mode.
The issue is independent of the software, it is a hardware issue.
I successfully put my A2017G back to full stock yesterday by using TWRP to flash stock bootstack, stock bootloader and stock recovery.
I would recommend to try to find a 'back to stock' method that works for your specific model. I have no experience with ZTE RMA service, but ZTE does not officially support unlocking. For this reason it would not hurt to be safe and make sure the phone is full stock when you send it in.

I guess you were the one asking for the button placement on the TWRP thread?
There are two ways around this:
-If you have an A2017G: Flash raystef66's B09 flashable packages, then follow the guide on how to get rid of the bootloader unlocked message. You don't lock the bootloader but it also doesn't show that it is unlocked. Also, in Europe, OEMs can't refuse to fix a software-tampered phone's hardware problem unless they can prove that the issue was caused by the software. So if you are on B09, no 5 second screen, they will most probably not even notice, and if they do they can't do anything.
-If you have an A2017U: MiFlash then lock BL. Just put the phone in EDL mode and flash a full stock package (i think WesTD made a thread with back to stock files for all 3 models). Then try to access Fastboot; if you can't then maybe you can use raystef66's guide on how to get rid of the bl unlocked message, because it also restores fastboot, but we're unsure if it works on the U for the time being. Or get Fastboot some other way if there is. Then lock the BL and send the phone on its way.
I have a theme on TWRP so the layout is totally different. Would send you screenies if i didn't have it.

My phone had this issue yesterday evening....it kinda flickered in and out a couple of times. I didn't know what to do, then gave it some "percussive maintenance" and it seemed to be back to normal. Looking here....I see that exact same issue pop up. Know I know what to do to actually "fix" it if it happens again. Thanks a lot!

is it really a hardware problem? It happened to me when it provides the android version 8 beta. Also happens to me when i'm in recovery twrp 3.2.1
Had the same problem before, and a hard press along the edge 2 or 3cm from the botton right corner and there's a click and problem solved.
However, on this occasion I believe my 2 year old daughter washed my phone as it was wet, and even after 24 hours in a bag of rice it's still not working, so time to try out this VIP warranty!
This is a hardware issue. The connection for the screen can pop out just enough to cause this issue. There isn't any tape holding down the connector so it can pop off really easy if dropped the right way. I actually brought a phone with this issue for cheap. Took me an hour to fix it permanently and added tape to the connector so it doesn't happen again.

it's weird, there's a metal plate but it only keeps the battery and USB connectors down

When I first opened it up I was thinking the same thing. I feel like as time goes on, these phones will show up on eBay with this issue. It's definitely a design or manufacturing flaw. A bit of tape would solve this issue but a metal plate would be ideal.

Hello, i had the same issue with my Axon.
Try to push with your thumbs in the upper right corner of your screen gently. The issue is because a loose screen connector. For me this Problem dont come back.
Sry for my bad english.

Thanks man! Dropped my phone 30 minutes ago and the same thing happened. I was devastated not because of the damage itself but because of the expected wrok and wait for parts. I hate fixing these new phones with glue everywhere. A nice thumb press and presto! Back to order. Thanks!
Re: thumb-press fix: Thanks! It worked!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post your fixes! I had the same problem of half-screen and flickering on and off after dropping it, and yes, it is definitely a hardware problem which I fixed permanently by taking ollie196 and freeknz's advice. Just press firmly with your thumb near the right-center of the screen -- poke around until you hear a faint but audible "click". Worked for me (it's been about a week with no problems, so far). Just be careful not to drop your phone again!

I had the exact same issue after I dropped my phone - press down with your thumb quite firmly about 1-2cm to the left of your lower volume button - may notice just the pressure actually temporarily fixes the display, but if you press a bit harder it will fix it permanently. (well at least untill the next time you drop it agan )

Just found this thread. Same issue here after a hard drop. Pressing on the screen as stated above does seem to fix it. It's clearly a hardware issue so I suspect I'll crack open the phone soon and see if I can snuggle up the loose connector.

well, know that there's no going back. You'll lose the double sided tape and you'll also probably ruin the protective cloth that goes upon the speakers, plus you risk breaking stuff like the volume buttons or getting the frame dinged up. Since your phone works, i'd suggest you keep it like that until you want to change the battery or something else.
All this coming from a guy with 3 axons, just sayin'
