Quick questions about screen scratches - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a small scratch on my screen (thanks to my drunk girlfriend) and i can notice it while the screen is on, it isnt really deep at all, but i can still see the rainbow effect on a white backround. I want to know, if i get a screen protector will it cover up the scratch ? like while the screen is on will i notice it?

yes upto some extent it will surely cover the scratch. try a good screen protector. Atlast depends on the scratch how deep or sharp it is.

Ok thanks, so a little bit like glass?
if we are spending 500 euro on a device, what we are going to lose in spending 10-15 more? prevention is better.always.
BTW, I have ordered a screen protector along with my HD2 preorder
For that kind of dough they should have included one, they do with most all their other lines currently.

Feels solid like glass. The only bad thing about it, its a fingerprint magnet, and reflects light a lot.
Nothing is scratch proof, except for the hardest material (= very expensive ). One tiny sand particle can mess up an entire iphone screen within seconds.
Edit: I should add that of course a glass screen would be "less prone" to scratches in general than some form of polymer. So if you do not want to worry about scratching the screen, get a screen protector. If not, you'll probably be fine, but it's not guaranteed.
according to a review, the screen is made of special material, put screen protector will slow down the response. but it is still a good idea to protect it.
The term "special material" has a broad meaning. But yes, a screenprotector can interfere with the response, though I'm sure a screenprotector of a special material can be made as well, so it will have an insignificant influence on the response of the screen (see what I did there? ).

I'm surprised no one has pointed out the capacitive screen responds only to fingers.....well maybe a special stylus, but I think you'll agree most of us will be using our fingers......
So in that event, what's the purpose of a screen protector?

True, your finger won't scratch the screen, however when you have your phone in your pocket and say with some coins or keys or in your bag a screen protector will be very handy to protect your expensive gadget.

...lol I dont have one but there is nothing wrong with a man bag... and I think there is a few girls on these forum
uh - yeah
I'm a girl and I do carry a small purse. I think I will have to investigate screen protectors. Don't want one that will interrupt the touch capabilities but I'm sure someone makes them. Better to be safe than sorry. I keep my phones for a couple of years. Not much worse than a scratched screen.
I will definitely put one on, not because I'm worried about the glass being scratched but I want an anti-glare protector which should help with fingerprints, smudges, glare and help a teeny weeny bit with sunlight legibility.

This may be so for resistive screens, but for the HD2 which uses a capacitive screen I think a screen protector would make no difference.
And about a response, either its there or its not I don't think it would be slowed down lol.
I am considering purchasing a 'BodyGuardz' screen protector which is meant to be really good. Maybe anyone else who is going to by a screen protector should take a look. Its basically a cheaper version of InvisibleShield
I would definitely put on a screen protector the moment I unbox it.
Not just the screen protector, but also a case (I prefer a silicon soft case) for the side and back of the phone.

Glass screen with/without a screen protector

As you know the Hero has a special coating on the screen, and through the first few days of use i found it awesome. Finger prints are never really much or a problem. But being afraid that the glass screen might get scratched i put on a screen protector but now sensitivity seems a little ( tiny ) bit less & the fingerprints are quite horrible. So just wondering who here uses it without the protector & does is scratch easily ? Comments welcomed
you do not need a screen protector for glass screen phones, such as the Hero or iPhone. My Hero has been getting a rough treatment for about 4 months now and not a scratch to be seen.
I got one from boxwave.com (Anti glare one)
http://www.boxwave.com/accessories/htc-hero-screen-protectors_3636.htm
It helps with smudges as well.
What screen coating are you talking about? White Hero has teflon coating on the casing which has nothing to do with screen, I believe.
I am not sure that Hero actually has got a glass screen. If so, I think that screen protector is just pointless.
If it actually has got a plastic screen, I would not ruine my phone with screen protectors. Phones are meant for us to use.

Anyway, a screen with very minor scratches is not only more sensitive than a screen with protector, but better looking too. Bigger scratches, well, a protector won't protect from those.
imo a screen protector is pointless...ive been treating my hero rly badly and theres not even a tiny scratch...i can even fall drunk on the road with ur hero in hand and it doesnt break (tested)

theres an anti-fingerprint coating on the hero. Makes smudges harder to get on it and makes it very easy to clean it of. Thanks for the comment btw

i tried it before but didn't like how it detorriate the brilliance of the screen.
I was gonna get a screen protector for mine. But all they had at the time were the universal kind. And I knew better then to fall into that. But its been a week and not a scratch on it. I try not to put other objects in the same pocket and take notice when I'm doing something that may put the phone in danger. Making sure to remove it from harms way. But yeah... I don't think ill fall into the screen protector money pit with this phone. That's my opinion though. I spent a lot of cash on those things. Prolly enough that I could've just used my insurance and got a refurbished .

Yup...more and more touchscreens are going to it!

i have the white hero and about the screen, i thought there was a screen protector on it already when it came out of the box? doesnt it?
i tried peeling the corners a bit but not too much cuz i didnt want the corners to curl up and not stick anymore, and eventually it'll bug me and i'll have to rip the whole thing off (happened before) so i just left it alone and assumed theres a screen protector on the screen

how does everyone find this concept in practice? In the last few weeks the phobic part of it seems to be failing, or I need to wash my hands more often... just seems to be more dirty finger smudges hanging around until I give it a good wipe with a screen chamoise

Oh the fingerprints will still show up but I just wipe it off with my hand (a firm swipe up the screen) and it's as good as new.
The idea is that the oils do sit on top, but they aren't sticking so you can just wipe them off again.
Yeah i always am able to see the fingerprints but a swift wipe and theyre gone. I also always find that when i bring the phone out of my pocket the screen is perfectly cleaned every time. I like it
Mine has a very small (5mm) scratch. No idea how it happened
I too have a small scratch, about 3mm, in the middle-upper-right. No big deal, but its there if you look for it. It's a white Hero, if it matters.
Those scratches, on the screen?!
I have a tiny scratch on my screen too! It's over the black part next to the branding though so it's not a problem. I purchased a screen protector after this happened though, just to be safe.
I use a screen protector on mine (and a gel case) and I haven't noticed any problems with it being less sensitive.
When I first got the phone (G2) before I put the protector on I noticed the screen looked rubbish because it had fingerprints all over it....
I'm happy to use a screen protector to protect against scratches.... I wouldn't risk without as I want this baby to stay pristine
I like naked gadgets.
To those who got scratches, what type of environment does your phone get exposed to? Keys and coins normally won't scratch hardened glass, but dirt with rocks and sand will.

Screen polishing on X10 ?

Ok, does this phone have screen protector that is glued on the display or it is just a display with nothing on it ? I have few little scratches so I was wondering can I polish it somehow ?
Tnx
The phone comes with a screen protector already applied. Look at the edges of the screen, you'll be able to see the difference between the screen itself and the protector.
Hi guys, been reading for the past few months here...I am getting this phone in about 1 or 2 weeks, and I read it has a scratch resistant screen...but this thread states that it actually is a screen protector. Can someone explain a bit more about this?
I also have some scratches on the protector. They can be polished out temporarely and completely with LCD-Liquid but next day they are visible again.
As the protector fits very well:
Anyone got an Idea how to polish away fine scratches permanently from protectors ?
THX
it has a screen protector on it but also a scratch resistant screen but i've managed to put some small scratches but nothing too bad.
i took the screen protector off, a mistake on my part but oh well.

Mineral glass. Not quite crystal. But tougher than normal glass. Took mine off too. It definitely makes the screen a little more responsive. I personally recommend removing it, but I'm not going to be responsible for yourscratches!

Did you try "Displex"?
No, I didn't, thx for the Info.
If it's that in a Shop I'd get it and give it a try. The protector fits so exactly on the glass that I would keem it as long as possible.
Tnx a lot guys, now I am much more happier knowing that it is only protector scratch, I can see it on the edges. Is there any screen protectors that good on ebay so I can replace this one ? I have bought some but they are not perfect size like this original one.

I removed my screen protector today since I dropped it on sharp pebbles with the screen first, lol. Anyways, Sony Ericsson says that it should be avoided at all costs. Removing the pre-fitted protector that is. Well, I hope I don't have to regret removing it!

One thing you can try is going around the edges with a razorblade. I haven't done it on the X10 but I've done it on oither phones where it's worked well.

Theory on the EPD clarity

So today I got a bit of water on the epd and noticed that it was much sharper than the rest of the matte display.
So my theory is, would putting a screen protector on(which is not matte) do the same?
Sounds interesting, if you decided to try it out let us know the result.
Hi guys,
You are right! Since I noticed the issue with the stock protector (when I remove it) I decided to use with yp2 epd with screen protector. It is almost a clear screen with a transparent protector and there's no matte view. Just try it!
If you can't find original protector, you can use normal soft transparent covers by scissoring it. I use it like way
WTF!? I just dropped some water to test this and I couldn't believe how sharp it was... Will definitely try a screen protector. Thanks!

some advise for the best:
i use A4 sheet transparent sticker like this
You can print (be aware of setting printscale to 1:1) the attached forcut.pdf file on back face of the sticker and let's cut borders carefully. Then you can apply it to the epd screen. Tips: don't be afraid for the small air bubbles under 1mm diameter. They will dissappear since adhesive of the sticker will spread slowly in the room temperature in a few days. That's the theory :good:
And also don't worry about small fingerprints on the sticker, they also will be gone for the same reason.
See the attached file and images mine yp2

How to get rid of rainbow effect on 3D TGSP?

Is there a way to remove it? I have tried OnePlus version and Orzly version and they are all the same. Also Orzly has those weird dots in the glass.
Can you share some pics
i agree, almost all glass protectors got this effect... some more some less, thats why im not using any and enjoying without
I have rainbow effect even on that protective something (dont know word :| )
I thought it is because of Amoled but seems like it isn't that case then ..

It's because the screen is not designed to stick to the display like other tempered screen protectors. This is a 3d tempered which has adhesive around the corners that make it stick to the screen.

I didn't have it on my pre applied. I kept my pre applied on until it got scratched up and removed it.
I am using a Orzly tgsp and it's a little rainbowy, but the thing that bothers me the most is the insane reflection. In clear daylight it's hard to see the screen instead of my face..
