Nexus 4 or Xperia SP, Please advice - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in a dilemma as to which phone to go for. I'd really really appreciate if you'd take a minute to post your opinion. For now, I have decided to go for Nexus 4 or Sony Xperia SP.
Price Difference:Xperia SP is ~40$ cheaper than the Nexus 4 here
The price difference isnt really my concern though, I might as well put in a few extra bucks to get the best phone, if necessary. Ive researched quite and here are some stuff i really need clarifications about the Nexus 4:
What's the battery backup I can get out of Nexus 4[approx of Standby,SOT[browsing],SOT[gaming, say, subway surfers] with custom rom+kernel and stock? [Standby=No Data,Wifi,Bluetooth,GPS]
Is the back glass very prone to shattering? Assume it falls on the ground from waist height, is it sure to crack?
Do you think the Nexus 4 would be outdated in terms of hardware hence i should be waiting for the Nexus 5? Here in India, Nexus 4 launched recently so I'm assuming the nexus 5 might take quite some time as well compared to the US release
IF you do know some stats about battery in the Xperia SP, do put it out as well.
The major advantage i hear about the Nexus is direct updates from google but aren't other phones like the Xperia SP likely to get custom Rom's with the latest software? So what's the big advantage in it? This would be my first android.
Thank you!

I don't know about the sp, but I have a ZL that I can't decide whether or not I like more than the N4. I'll give you some pointers on it since they are similar, to an extent.
My N4 hasn't broken and my kids and I are pretty rough on it. I have a ringke fusion case though. (I'm not a fan of any case for the device though, it has an of form factor to me). Battery gets me about 6-7 hours with battery guru enabled before a recharge is needed.
The ZL is awesome, I don't like the power button or the goofy scratch prone screen protector that is installed at the factory though. Battery lasts almost 24 hours with regular use, about 5 -6 hours of screen on. Almost two days with light use (I leave stamina on 24/7 and low power mode kicks in at 15%) Sony has a lot of nice options in their OS, but a lot of them also feel like they're in the way. If you've ran stock android, it'll feel way more similar than the Samsung and HTC devices, with a few extras baked in.
Ultimately, I love the feel and the display of the ZL, but I miss the stock lock screen and Google wallet too much to use it regularly. Rooting and flashing the ZL really was a pain too, broke NFC with every non stock ROM.

It really depends on what you need/want. I find Nexus 4 really good but the lack of expandable memory really bugs me and the camera isn't really that good. Battery is so-so, it'll last a day with light use but only 12-16 hours with moderate to heavy use, oh, but I'm on stock with franco kernel and only had this phone for a week so far.
As for Xperia SP, since it has half the spec of Nexus 4 and bigger battery, it will definitely stay longer than Nexus 4. And as per review on Youtube, the performance is not really that much different than Nexus 4 and it has a cool stylish design. But, Sony's reputation on updates is what really stops me and also the lack of devs (hey, it's still new).
If you want better hardware and updates, get Nexus 4, but if you want a regular to use phone and better battery get Xperia SP. Best of luck dude.

Much appreciate the inputs, thank you.
I really don't mind compromising on the camera or the expandable memory however on the SP the lesser 1gb ram does set me back as I'm not too sure how big this lack of ram would affect the phone in the future. Is the lack of 2gb ram a deal breaker for future updates/appa/games?
The only concern about the nexus 4 is the battery. If it can last me for an hour of music on loud speaker with screen off, an hour of browsing,1-2 hours of light gaming and standby for ~9hrs(with data enabled) id go for it. But I don't know if it can give me so much battery backup either. So if you can help me out, thatd be great

One gig should be enough as rumor has it that Key Lime Pie will be runnable even on a 512 MB RAM, rumor though. The only noticeable drawbacks from a lesser RAM is during multitasking, but it won't be that bad on 1 GB.
As for battery life of Nexus 4, most users can get up to 3-4 hours of screen time max. With a few music, browsing on Opera Mini, and some light gaming I think you can get at least 9 hours on stock. Dunno on custom ROMs or kernels, probably better.

Here are some pros and cons of nexus 4
Pros :
Good hardware that is future protected at least for two major android updates .
The stock nexus experience , I like the software navigation bar instead of hardware keys .
Great support from developers , look at the xda threads .
Great bang for buck .
Cons :
Battery life is not that great , I could last a day with 3 to 4 hours of screen on time on 2g but lot less on 3g . (future updates may improve it but my 3g network drops a lot , even under good coverage)
Camera quality and screen quality not up to par with s3 but don't take me wrong here , it's still good.
Sound quality is not good , I missed a lots of calls when phone is faced up , but custom kennels and mods improved it .
Storage and battery are fixed.
Heats up if you ate going to game continuously for half an hour or more , or under any heavy load . mine reached 40 degree but that depends on your surrounding temperature .
I think the point here is that if you are not going to root the device then you may find some problems but for all the non nexus devices I had , the development support ended and cease after an year or so .

Yes I will be rooting it for sure and trying out anything possible to get the best out of it. I really wish the battery backup was better, I don't really think I could deal with just 3hrs SOT. I mean I don't see the point in getting a powerhouse and not being able to make use of it while your on the move, especially for gaming and stuff. If I were to have to plug in so much I might as well play on my laptop. Even a SOT of 4-5hrs would have been great for me. But I'm really not sure if I could deal with 3.

Actually the more power a phone has, the more battery hungry it becomes. You'll
have to wait until our technology reach a new era, my guess would be around 2 to 5 years until we get some proper full touch screen phones with a good battery without bumping up the battery capacity. Or wait till Google optimizes Android to work efficiently and smoothly without sacrificing the battery.

Um any idea what now much SOT other phones in the price range offer? Like the S3,Xperia SP or even the S4,Note 2,HTC ONE? If its the same case with all of them, then I guess it's alright. I just felt 3hrs was a bit too low, like I've said before I haven't used an android before so not too sure if this is the general issue

Sorry but I only know Nexus 4's SOT, I never checked my old devices SOT, just realized how to do it now
You should try asking at the respective device's forum or PM some owners to compare them. Good luck dude.

also about heating i undervolt mine by 100mV and its not heating that much
also about screen i changed the color preset to bundi22 and the screen alot more better sometimes i feel that screen of nexus 4 is better than my earlier amoled experience but its all matter of your taste how you like it

That's very encouraging. As long as I get about 4hrs of SOT ill be very satisfied. The other minor problems don't matter much, I won't be gaming all day long so even if it does heat up its gonna last for only a while. I love the design, dev support and everything about the nexus. The only concern is about the battery. Also do you think it's a good option to wait for the nexus 5?

i have no idea when nexus5 is coming if its coming soon then you should wait and buy new nexus5
but if you see in that way there will always be something new, powerful, better to buy in future and even i bought this around 1 month before
and according to me nexus 4 should not be outdated next 1 or 2 years
rest is upto you

i was in the same boat as you but i also decided to buy nexus 4 and guess what , best decision ever no regrets ! my only fear was about battery life which i am getting same as the galaxy s2 which is pretty awesome too so yeah awesome phone

Nexus 4 got better CPU and more RAM. Nexus series will receive new android version very fast but if you have other device, you may have to wait about 0.5-1.5 year to get that android update (or you may not receive an update forever).

If I don't need a hugely powerful phone, have I made the right choice?

Hi all,
When the N4 was announced I had my GNex up for sale within the hour, sold within two! The more I read about the Nexus 4, the more I am unsure it is actually for me. I do not play games and generally use my phone for browsing the net/forums, google currents, bit of music and social networking (Facebook etc.)
I am now unsure whether I have made the right choice, and whether I should snap-up another Nexus while people are selling them off cheap on the forums ready for the N4 upgrade.
I was hoping for upgrades in the following areas
Build quality... this is one area where I am fairly sure I would be happy! N4 looks great!
Screen quality... again, a fairly significant upgrade to me me as the Gnex screen always looked a little washed out and dull when sat alongside other handsets (One X, S3, S2 etc.)
Battery Life... Was hoping for this but am now unsure. Gnex seemed to heat up quite a lot and was looking forward to getting rid of that. it now seems that the N4 may have the same issues and reports of screen on time in the region of 3 hours do not seem that much of a step up from the Gnex
Processor... Whilst a speed boost would be welcomed, as I only use the phone for some casual browsing and not gaming I am unsure how much difference I will see.
Camera... Again was hoping for a major boost, but seems to be a minor incremental boost at best!
Any thoughts? Anyone else in the same position as me and wondering what to do? Price difference is in the region of £100-120 if I were to purchase like for like accessories etc.
Cheers,
Michael
The fact that it's "Nexus" also means you get a standard, Android experience, along with guaranteed quick updates (up until the point where the OS won't run smoothly on the device I guess; which should take a while). Other vendors for the most part offer updates slowly, and choose to make the general UI... non-standard (which usually has more downsides)
yeah... am only comparing the two nexus devices as that is all I would buy... love the specs of the S3 and can be picked up mint for about the same price as a new Nexus 4, but couldn't live without the updates
Literally everything is improved. You'll love it no matter what.

One thing I wouldn't worry ahbout is battery life,
once the obvious software problems are fixed battery life is going to be good because:
-The battery at 2100mAh is pretty large
-IPS panels are allot more power efficient then Amoled screens, especially if your main use is web browsing
-The S4pro is the most efficient ARM quad-core and is the only one which allows to clock its cores independently
-There will be custom Kernels that allow undervolting and other features that improve battery life
I'm not a gamer either, but that didn't stopped me from getting this I personally think you won't regret getting it, but if you don't like it, you can always just return it and get something else

How much of a difference will custom kernels and ROMs make to the battery life? Roughly? 10% or more?
I know my current Galaxy 3 gives me an improvement of almost 30% with custom firmware, but that's because of removing the samsung bloatware.
I try to get the fastest, most powerful phone or computer out there that's at a reasonable price. By reasonable I mean most power per dollar. The people that say they don't need a super fast phone or computer are usually the ones complaining that Web pages open slow or it keeps freezing and slowing down. The better hardware you get, the longer you will be satisfied with the device. And for this price with this hardware/software? You gotta jump on it. You may not need a phone that could run crysis but if you could get it for the same or cheaper price as a lesser spec'd phone, wouldn't you?

Build quality... this is one area where I am fairly sure I would be happy! N4 looks great! I think we're going to love the build quality. I've said for a couple of years now that if Google could put out a Nexus device that felt like the iPhone 4/4S in the hand, then they'd really be on to something. I believe that's what LG has done here.
Screen quality... again, a fairly significant upgrade to me me as the Gnex screen always looked a little washed out and dull when sat alongside other handsets (One X, S3, S2 etc.) IMO, the screen is going to be great. From everything I've read, the screen is just a slight notch below the One X...so that would make it fantastic. And every review I've read that compared it to the GNex screen says that it's MUCH better and much easier to see outdoors in sunlight. This is a major upgrade.
Battery Life... Was hoping for this but am now unsure. Gnex seemed to heat up quite a lot and was looking forward to getting rid of that. it now seems that the N4 may have the same issues and reports of screen on time in the region of 3 hours do not seem that much of a step up from the Gnex. Again, this is something we'll have to wait and see (as everyone's day-to-day use is different), but I've seen a couple of reviews that say the Nexus 4 gets about the same, or just below, the battery life of the S3. If that's the case, then (for me at least), I'm golden. Yesterday I got 5 hours screen-on time on my S3 (50% brightness, stock rooted ROM, power save turned off, etc.) and I still had 23% battery life left. That's pretty darn good!
Processor... Whilst a speed boost would be welcomed, as I only use the phone for some casual browsing and not gaming I am unsure how much difference I will see. I think you'll see a major boost, even if you don't need it. Apps will open faster and things will just be snappier. I'd much rather have more performance than I need rather than the other way around.
Camera... Again was hoping for a major boost, but seems to be a minor incremental boost at best! This is the one place where I have to really disagree. The camera is VERY important to me (I use it daily in my job) and the shots I've seen seem to show the camera is a MAJOR upgrade over the GNex. While I didn't find the GNex camera to be awful, it certainly couldn't hold a candle to my S3 camera. If this camera is anywhere near as good as the S3, I'm going to be very pleased.
Any thoughts? Anyone else in the same position as me and wondering what to do? Price difference is in the region of £100-120 if I were to purchase like for like accessories etc.
Cheers,
Michael

See my replies above. I believe you've made a great decision. :good:
Engadget has had the most negative response to the battery life of anyone, and they still got 3 minutes longer out of the Nexus 4 than the Galaxy Nexus. Assuming they never fix whatever was causing the poor battery life, you'll see the same as what you get on your Galaxy Nexus.

[Q] N4 Good Upgrade from Galaxy Nexus?

Hey,
My phone contract is up for renewal on the 11th January 2013 and wanted to get some opinions from people who used to own the phone I currently own which is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I really can't fault my current Nexus, it is running Rasbean ROM with Franco kernel with very smooth, fast, reliable results.
However, with my free upgrade coming soon I'm a little bit stumped as to what my next move is. I don't want to move away from my current Tariff because it is the only tariff (mobile network) in my area that gives me good coverage around my house, so I'm more than happy to carry on paying monthly instead of going down the PAYG phone with a GiffGaff tariff etc...
I've just watched a video comparing the Nexus with the Nexus 4, yes the Nexus 4 does seem half a second or so quicker at starting apps etc and the screen looks completely different to the Nexus.
- Is there any other differences that you noticed from your upgrade?
- Now you have been using the Nexus 4 for a couple weeks+ would you do the same upgrade again?
- Is the non-removable battery a problem at all when flashing buggy Kernels/ROM's?
- Is the signal coverage roughly the same as the Nexus?
- Can you get the stock Nexus browser on the custom ROM's instead of the slow Chrome browser that came with the Nexus 4?
Any other pointers would be a massive help in me upgrading or not. Either I upgrade and sell the phone on as brand new or I keep the Nexus 4 upgrade and sell my 10 month old Nexus as used.
What would you do?
Why would the non removable battery be a problem with roms? The signal should be equal or better than the Gnex. You can get whatever browser you want on any android phone you want (almost).
The Nexus 4 is a beast. Its fast, fluid and just incredible.
If you're concerned about not getting the phone out of a bootloop you can always press vol up + power to force reboot(afaik).
Install CM10.1 and you will get the stock AOSP browser but theres also an alternative in the themes and apps section.
My signal seems better than with my Xperia S and it was already good, so I would say its the same or even better.
I would definitely upgrade(ok i did ) if I were in your situation.
I just got mine today but I say Yes. It is completely worth it. As for the non removable battery. It shouldn't be a problem as you can always get into fastboot. I don't know about other roms but you get stock android browser on Paranoid Android. The screen is much nicer. Fast processor. Pretty much everything you need unless you want LTE.
I had a galaxy nexus before this. Here's some points in the nexus 4's favor:
-Much much better screen
-Better battery life
-Better camera
-Faster and smoother UI
-Looks and feels like a higher quality device
-Music output significantly better through earphones, and louder through speaker
-Wifi reception is better. Cellular signal slightly better or the same.
Also note:
-Almost all custom ROMs come with the AOSP browser and ditch chrome.
-You can reset the device at any time by pressing and holding the volume and power keys together. There are loads of devices without removable backs and they all use this kind of reset combo. Don't worry about not being able to battery pull.
Cons of the nexus 4 to the galaxy nexus:
-Not as much development happening in the N4 forums as yet compared to the galaxy nex. I'm sure that will shift with time and is only the case due to poor availability of the N4.
-Not as durable as the gnex. Will probably take a lot less to break it.

Better battery life is subjective. You can get official extended batteries at around 2000 mah whereas n4 is 2100. Not much of a difference and the hsic wake lock is a problem for most people at least until Google panes out a update or flag a custom kernel
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
its basically the same. its maybe a tiny tiny bit faster in daily use, it doesnt scroll faster or anything but the transitions are nicer. so, first thing you notice is ... nothing. i know i'm getting tortured now but its the truth. its a nice little upgrade, beautiful screen (if you calibrate, otherwise its greatly inferior to your nexus), i love that its wider. in some games you notice slight differences, theres new lightting effects, flares, etc. overall it feels more precious and shiny and you can be sure it will withstand the next 24 months - and thats the thing with nexus, the software is the same, but it lets you enjoy what android has to offer without having to worry about silly stats. the new one is just making sure it stays like that bringing enough punch for tomorrows demands.
I'm coming from the GSM galaxy nexus.
The N4 has a wonderful screen, I like it a lot more than my Galaxy Nexus' screen.
But if you have the 2000 mah OEM battery, you will find the battery life of the N4 on 3G very disappointing. On WiFi they're pretty comparable.
Brilliant feedback folks, thanks a million for the in depth conclusions.
I'm swaying towards the Nexus 4 - for the pure reason of it been more future proof than the Galaxy Nexus.
The ROM and Kernel issues don't worry me, as they will get stronger and stronger as time go on, and both my favourite DEV's have got one and are developing ROM/Kernel so that's a bonus.
I was worried about the battery life of the Nexus 4, but by the sounds of it if you are on wifi the battery is not too far from the performance of the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm just slightly nervous about selling my nexus as it has been faultless.

Don't be nervous, it's about a $100 upgrade depending how much you get for your phone. I'd say it's worth it if you are selling ur old device for a good amount. Battery life, I wouldn't worry.
Franco Kernel + ROM of your choice, you shouldnt be disappointed.
Well........that was a quick decision if I ever I made one.
My Nexus 4 will be delivered by o2 tomorrow. Nexus is up on the popular bidding channel.

What have I noticed so far (in order):

2) Screen looks different, its like it is raised up compared to the Nexus
3) Boots up v.quick
4) Feels heavier, more solid
5) Camera is better

Coming from Gnex.
Using the N4 in everyday life is not a big difference (same software, sometimes a bit faster). Not a milestone ahead.
But - the phone is so solid, good-looking and has a better camera compared to the Gnex.
If it is really worth to change is more emotional than stick to facts.

I actually kind of disagree with the previous post. Generally my experience has been pretty good. Battery life is solid for me...I generally get 6-8 hrs of screen time each charge. Charging is slow, but the battery is 9000mAh which is huge. I plug mine in at night and its fully charged in the morning. Its all about your own expectations I guess.
Performance is really good and the screen is amazing. Some complain about lightbleed but its not an issue for me. Peruse the forums. There are many topics about issues.

Coming from an iPad, extremely dissatisfied. Nowhere near as smooth and has half the battery life. The colors on the display are not as vibrant and the blacks are not as deep and rich. Unacceptable stability, tons of freezing, crashing and random reboots which are all symptoms of android 4.2, zero accessory support, half the battery of the iPad (I'm lucky to get three hours of screen on time at max brightness which I need to be on to see the screen in brightly lit rooms (iPad got much brighter and lasted 10 hours of actual screen on time). Games are laggy and I just regret this purchase.
I was expecting an experience like I have on my note 2. But its nowhere near as smooth and stable. And actually lasts a shorter amount of time before it needs to charge.
I'm only two days in but I love this thing... does have minimal light bleed but it's not noticeable in normal use... wish I got it sooner

Overall, I love it..had it near a month now and use it alot more than I expected too.
As an avid android user, I am glad I didnt jump ship to ipad which I thought about doing so, but glad it was just a thought. I still hate hate hate iOS.
Battery life sure could be tad better, but it gets me through the day and can toss on charger at night.
screen is just awesome looking
gaming is fun, love hooking up my controller via a 14cent otg adaptor and play nes/snes/playstation games.
Plex is just pure awesomeness on the tablet
and well Simpsons Tapped Out...damn addicting..
over all just been a great experiance, and nothing really would change, and glad I chose this.
Really pleased with my N10, had it since just after release. Performance is excellent. The only app I have that lags is FF. I had some random crashes and lockups before 4.2.2 but since then it's been rock solid with not a single problem. Battery life is good considering the outstanding screen it's powering.
The only issue I have is it losses time occasionally, I know this is a recognised problem but I would like to see it sorted as I use the tablet as a bedside clock/alarm when I'm travelling.

Use an app like "clocksync" to deal with device time slippage

If lost or stolen, I'd buy....

you don t see an issue that google lied us about the battery life and no care about OEM accesories?
- i paid for 7 hours of web browsing - i get 5 hours ( stock rom , stock kernel , no background apps running instead of web surfing ones , brightness to 30 % )
- i paid beacause its google/samsung and i can have a simple case that fits this product - i got nothing
- i paid for google brand because its a inovative company - i ve got no pogo cable to charge faster not to charge more that stays on
you are in heaven now - don t you worry child
Google -> put your as to work and deliver us some high class products like the search engine is ! I tought that you are the best ... don t get us more disappointed
Samsung -> shame on you because of the ugly bleeding screen problem . wtf you are nr 1 company in the world that produce this toys ... be carefull next time

Have had my Nexus 10 since early December, after having returned a disappointing TF700T. I use it heavily, just about every day.
I ran it stock for a while, although unlocked and rooted. Apex Pro. Using Chrome Beta let me avoid most of the early issues, and since android 4.2.2, this has been rock solid.
I recently flashed a custom ROM: AOKP PUB build. I'm also using the KTManta kernel. Performance, which was always great, is even better now. Lightning fast, super fluid / smooth. Incredibly reliable and stable.
I've had no issues at all re: squeaking, creaking, flexing, or light bleed. WiFi has been excellent in my experience.
Battery life has been fine. I average about 6 to 7 hours screen time in a typical day, and after a 16 to 18 hour day like that, I still have about 12 to 15 percent battery left. I generally leave brightness at about 70 pct.
I have SwiftKey Flow installed... Spectacular on this device and on my GNex.
I have the third party pogo cable and love it. I also found a genuine leather version of the Moko slim multi angle case on Amazon for $21, and it is perfect. Elegant, very functional, very well made, and a perfect fit.
I'm finding more and better ways to use the Nexus 10 every day. Spectacular device that is changing the way I work. Very highly recommended.
...beamed to your planet from my Nexus 10
I'm happy with the Nexus 10. I think the battery lasts enough, its shape is attractive and the data capacity is good.
Let's get real here
I'm not a hardcore XDA user and i don't modify my tablet more than it needs, So my experience with the nexus 10 has been great. Even though i have lost so many features from tf700t (with dock + SD Card) to Nexus 10, But it's worth it after seeing that performance that i got from the nexus 10.
Rants : only 16GB, Not way to upgrade. (Of course you could use cloud services)
Camera : 5MP, Would have loved to see a higher MP camera (It's not a big difference between 5-8)
Apps : Higher the quality, More the space it takes and it will eat up those 16gbs (You could get the 32GB but i haven't seen the 32gb available in over 3 months)
Love the Screen, Love the Performance, Love the Mic quality & Everything else ( Of Course apps that we download for the nexus 10 aren't updated yet, Well 95% of them)
If you want a tablet right now & You could get through the apps updating period (Where they update the graphics for Nexus 10) Then you are good for Nexus 10, Even though Nexus 10 is hard to get your hands on.
But If you want a simple tablet that will do your stuff without being confused, Nexus 10 is the way to go. But suggest If you want a table that already has a ecosystem you could try the iPad 4 they have alot of apps optimized, It's better to wait and think about it than going out and buying it (I learned it the hard way)
It depends on you and how you want to spend your money.
The things i said are something that i hate or love / My Opinion & Should not taken as a hate message.
Overall the Tablet gets 10/10, The things i mentioned (Rant) are things that doesn't bother me but i would have loved to have it, Just for sake of having them. I'm Completely happy with my tablet and couldn't wish better. "Whisper" 64GB or 128GB "Whisper"
Thank you very much your opinions!
You are very helpful.
Best regards
My glowing opinion of my N10 here:
http://dibblebill.blogspot.com/2013/02/farewell-a500-hello-manta.html
However, I am afflicted with the strange battery indicator issue. Calling Samsung later today. Give the N10 a 9.5/10. I get 8-10 hours at about 30-40% brightness, though that's all I need in my work environment. Get home from work shift and still have 50-70% battery left, depending on how much I use it at work.
All in all, I considered the Acer a500 the BEST of the Honeycomb tablets, and I, based on experience, consider this the best (for my purposes) of the ICS/JB tablets. Its only contender when I bought it was the Note 10.1.
I've been using mine a lot, every day basically, from watching movies and tv shows on netflix/other sites to playing games (Android and emulators) to productivity (Evernote, Kingsoft Office with a bluetooth keyboard) to web browsing. Works great, still fluid, and overall very happy with it, I actually got rid of my laptop as I could do everything I wanted to do on it.
I've had mine since the end of December, and I use it every day. I absolutely love it. My only issue with it is that I can never decide which ROM to keep on it. I've been running a healthy diet of CM 10.1, AOKP, and PA, and all run so well, and smoothly. This tablet has gone beyond my expectations.

Nexus 4, Buy Now?

So I have been waiting for Google IO to see if there are any updates for the phone itself or a new phone but it seems more and more there won't be anything big, or it may just be an LTE version. I have no need for LTE at this present time.
There is a good deal today on ebay for a Nexus 4 for international shipping and I want to know whether I should go for it or rather wait till after I/O?
Opinions?
Just get it now , its a good phone and it will last you , at least that's how I feel about my nexus . also if the deal is that good , then yeah get it , make sure the imei is clean and there is no problems , have fun !

Wait, seriously. If something awesome is released, you'll be kicking yourself in the butt for not being patient
I could easily see a battery upgrade which is the Achilles heel for this phone.
This has always been a problem with phones: not daring to buy a new one because something else, something possibly better, may be coming up. But trust me: the Nexus 4 is a great phone with great specs and still has updates to come for ages. And about the battery life: with the right mods you'll get through 1,5 day.
You won't be disappointed and if you keep on looking towards newer models, then you'll never get yourself a new one.

it will be a long while before the nexus 4 feels outdated, it is still top end spec for crying out loud.
No and here's why:
Battery performance is lackluster compared to other devices, 3G/HSPA WILL murder even on stanby
New Nexus is obviously close and may have better storage
Camera is mediocre
The SoC has wakelock issues from the USB modem and certain sleep states are broken
No 4K support(may want?)
Development will slow down significantly after next nexus or new Moto X
Lack of stock LTE support
Call quality is terrible even if you manually use AMR
Thermal throttle is difficult to avoid, thing can heat up in basic apps

I do not agree with this person. Even when I have everything going and a ton of apps sinking in the back ground I get 8 to 12 hours use with around 3.5 hours screen on time with the screen at fifty percent. I have no issues with phone getting hot unless I am using the camera led as a notification tool in lite flow. If I do the normal things like uninstall apps I don't use and sign out of the other apps I get 20 hours easy and about 4 hours screen on time. My normal is 30 hours and 3 hours screen on time
There is little out there that out specs this phone. And being this a clean version of android and doesn't have touch wiz or HTC sense on it my phone seems to blow away even the s4.

There's nothing better out there in terms of Android software support. Even if you sell it a few months down the road, you'll still get a good price for it since it is a Nexus and it will hold it's value.

yes OP! Go try the other phones first, BUT if you want the smoothest phone around with No bloatware, the greatest specs all around with a price no one can beat, you might as well ! Some people say the hype about HTC one is almost at end Aside from the aluminium casing and the specs, nothing else would be exciting.

But if an even better device was to be announced the OP would be kicking himself like someone else said. I find the S4 Pro to be a double edged sword, you get A15 like performance but there are actual design issues that Faux has mentioned such as the wakelock for the usb and the sleep states.

I can't believe you guys are advocating to not wait 10 days just in case. We don't know for sure whether a nexus 5 will be released. I'm not saying anyone should wait 6 months. Anyone should be hesitant to buy a smartphone that's 6 months old
IMO it is very unlikely that we'll see a Nexus 5 in some days, a new version of the Nexus 4 seems much more likely to me. Either way I would wait these 10 days until I/O. But keep in mind that what we will see at I/O will not be available in the stores right away...

Thanks for the input guys. Note that I am definitely only going for the Nexus purely because of the price, it's way cheaper than anything else close in aesthetics and performance.

OK Acer ... I would advice the OP to ignore my post due to " lack of stock English support " ...

[Q] Is Nexus 4 still worth buying?

Hey guys,
Recently I've been thinking about changing my Xperia Mini Pro to something better. I just want to get phone that won't be laggy after some while - XMP is like that, no matter on which ROM and kernel.
I've got iPhone in my thoughts, but I don't have many friends with Apple product so it'd be useless - I wouldn't be able to use iMessage or AirDrop so functionality drops down a lot.
Next thing in my mind was Windows Phone. I think it's great alternative for Android, but when I had a fight with my moms Lumia 520, I decided not to buy Windows Phone so soon.
So my eyes looked at Android not-so latest smartphones and I saw Nexus. I felt in love with design of Nexus 4 and 5. My friend got N5 so I did play a little with it and I'd love to buy 5, but I can't afford that so the only alternative is to buy Nexus 4.
I've read that it has good hardware and Android runs smoothly even after a year of using - it's a must be for me, because it's going to be my phone for about 2-3 years from now. The only thing is that glass design - it's beautiful but isn't it vulnerable to scratches or even cracks?
And the best thing I'd love about Nexus 4 is that it's going to get Android L - it's the best information I've heard recently.
So guys... Finally. Is Nexus 4 still worth buying in 2014?
My friend is selling N4 for about 200-230$.
I can tell you, the Nexus 4 is worth every penny, also in 2014 too!
Not only the Nexus 4 has good hardware and everything runs smooth und fast but the community behind this device is great, gentle and helpful. Just take a look at the Nexus 4 threads here on xda. This is just awesome! :good:
With the vanilla android and open source policy of the Nexus 4 you can customize this device to your hearts content. Cyanogenmod, ParanoidAndroid, matr1x kernel, ak...just to name a few examples.
I also own a Nexus 4 since 1 and a half year and its runs like Usain Bolt.
Honestly you shouldn't buy the N4. The phone is very fragile. The glass on the back is thin and is not protected with Gorilla Glass. The Camera is not good, Galaxy S3 has a better camera than the Nexus 4. That is both video and still photos. The battery is average and will last you through a day, maybe two days if you use a battery saving kernel like HellsDoctor.
Lot's of games do not work very well on the Nexus 4, for some reason, i think it's bad optimization with AOSP, because the Quad Core 1.5Ghz CPU and Adreno 320 are strong enough to play every android game. The Nexus 4 also has thermal issues, because of an internal design flaw, the CPU can get very hot (up to 60C in games) if you don't undervolt it with a custom kernel. Than the temp peaks out at maximum 45-50C.
Now i don't mean to bash the Nexus 4, i have one! The design is very nice, it has a good display (With Obsanity_Amoled it looks like an OLED display!), and it has thin bezels. The Nexus 4 is also very very fast, it could compete with the S5, HTC One M8 and Xperia Z2.
But, here is what would I do if I were to change my phone.
If i were you, i would not get the Nexus 4. or the Nexus 5. I would get a Galaxy S4, but i would go for the i9505 or the i9506, the 4G Snapdragon 600 and 800 versions.
I know they are made out of plastic but i would have hard shell case on it so it wouldn't matter.
Yes, they run on TouchWiz but guess what? You can put AOSP on them! That's nexus 4 speeds (even faster because of Snapdragon 600&800) and you get an AMAZING 13MP Camera (my friend has the i9505 and that camera is just EYE QUALITY), and you get a bigger, replaceable battery!
So what's your choice, Nexus 4, or a Galaxy S4 i9505-i9506 AOSP Edition?
I heard about fragility of this phone but I'm trying to take care about my phones . So I don't think it would be a problem - if I'd buy N4, the first thing will be buying a case or a bumper.
When we're going into games - I don't even play games on smartphone. The only games I've ever played were Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, Drop and 2048, so I'm not that "gamer" guy. I heard a little about heating up. But which smartphone hasn't that problem? Even my XMP has a heat problem when I'm using it intensively and long. But it may be a little problem when it comes to heating up even when using WiFi or something like that...
And about that Galaxy S4 is the thing that I really don't like the whole Galaxy series design. It looks too much like cheap phones for me. I much prefer the Sony or Apple design - especially iPhone 4.
I thought about Moto G too, but 1 GB of RAM isn't very convincing and I looked a little at Meizu MX3 with Flyme OS 3 - it's beautiful OS, I think. But it's battery is horrible.
And here we come... Battery... And that's the thing. 4.70" screen and 2100 mAh battery... Nexus 5 isn't better. That's hurting me a lot, that battery life.
Maybe more users will answer in this topic - I do find it very helpful.
But for now thanks for answers, guys! It's harder choice than I thought
still rocking my nexus 4 naked , for about 1 year or bit more , no cracks but some scratches here and there because it keeps sliding randomly , besides that it can easily go through next 3 years without hiccup imo , i was in almost same boat as you but i really think 200-250 is wayy wayyyyyy too much for nexus 4 these days , 150 $ for 16 gb is reasonable in mint but used condition , even if you are gamer this baby will run anything you throw at it without any stutters or anything , battery isnt issue it can last as much as any other phone if you use properly optimized kernel and default display settings suck anywhoo if you can get htc one gpe that would be also great :good:

I completely disagree with you. Tell me a game that doesnt run well on the N4? I'm a hardcore gamer and there is barely any game that I havent played. Deciding for a phone for it's camera? If so buy a Nokia 3310 and some Nikon/Canon and you rock lol
The topic: I bough a N4 soon and 4 of my friends bough N4 after they played a bit with mine. I would buy it again if I didnt already have it.

Ever seen Gangstar game running smooth on any device? Even tho on the high settings i finished it w/o any lag with franco kernel. I tried all of the rest and gangstar lags but not with franco, you should try it too. Almost finished GTA:SA and it bugged my safe game also with franco kernel. Despicable me is known for its "optimization" and lagging for most of the devices. When u see bad fps try to see if other phones have it like Despicable me. And for most of the games u said are actually made by Gameloft who produce even unfinished projects so it should not make ur decision.Gameloft is like:
-ok guys we made the game what now, should we optimize it?
-dafaq you are talking about opti-what? Is it running?
-yea but with bad framerate.
-its ok man, release it we will blame people's devices. :good:
Also I'm thinking about not to buying any phone right now and get cash for Nexus 5 - I love this minimalistic design and everything. But this battery to 4.95" screen is misunderstanding...
In your place, I would absolutely go for the N4. I'm using one myself. No matter what I do to the software (hint: a LOT!) I can always get it back up and running. I love the phone and wouldn't replace it with anything other than a Nexus 5.
I've owned a Nexus 4 since the end of August 2013 and even today I still love this phone and I don't feel the urge to upgrade. (At least not until the Nexus 6 is released.)
This phone handles everything I want it to do. Its fast, snappy and simple, one of the reasons I love pure Android as there is no bloat. My phone is still completely stock from day 1 as I don't feel the need to root it. The screen is still quality in my eyes. There is also a possibility that this phone will receive Android L officially from Google which would be fantastic.
However my major grip; battery life. It is horrendous. Hardly makes it through a day for me. I even use extensive methods to save battery, for example, no Google now, location services off, phone on flight mode when WiFi is on etc. And the battery life still sucks. Its a shame the battery is not replaceable or I would have installed an extended battery as I have done in the past for previous phones.
My brother owns a Nexus 5, and from what I've seen his battery life is much much better than the Nexus 4. (He doesn't even use any optimisations and battery saving tweaks)
Comparing the Nexus 5 side by side to the Nexus 4 I don't feel a significant difference to warrant to purchase of the newer model, so when I was given the opportunity a few months ago, I turned it down and I will wait for the Nexus 6.
Bottom line; Nexus 4 is a fantastic phone, but terrible battery life.
yes
I would buy because of the communty behind it

And the best thing I'd love about Nexus 4 is that it's going to get Android L - it's the best information I've heard recently.
So guys... Finally. Is Nexus 4 still worth buying in 2014?
My friend is selling N4 for about 200-230$.

The Nexus 4 is a brilliant phone right now, but its ageing processor, lack of LTE and bad battery life mean it probably won't last another 2-3 years. It is a two year old phone, after all.
I just picked up a mint one for 170 and at that price to me its a great phone now yea its just a backup to my z ultra but I am still having a lot of fun with it. I mean just look at the Dev support, its crazy good and I got LTE working in just a few mins pulled 70 down and 25 up first try on T-Mobile.

My phone is still completely stock from day 1 as I don't feel the need to root it.
However my major grip; battery life. It is horrendous. Hardly makes it through a day for me. I even use extensive methods to save battery, for example, no Google now, location services off, phone on flight mode when WiFi is on etc. And the battery life still sucks.

You say you don't feel the need to root it yet you have bad battery life. Now go root it and flash HellsDoctor kernel..... you'll have about 4-5 hours of screen on time
And guys, what do you think about this Moto G. I've read a little about it.
Maybe this 1 GB of RAM is not that bad. Any experiences with that smartphone?
About support - I know and that's the best thing in the whole Nexus series - community support. And I'm still hesitating between N4/N5 and now this Moto G came into my mind... It's not so expensive and hardware isn't that bad.
edit: but it doesn't havet NFC . But I think it'll get Android L:

I am considering getting a second hand N4 as it's still a great phone, especially if it receives Android L from Google. I have an S4 and have been thinking about selling it as with the money (around £240) I could buy an N4 (£120) AND a Nexus 7 2013 (£110). I have the 2012 N7 so would sell it also. Just trying to figure out how much I would miss having the expandable storage option and also the camera on the S4. The other features (sensors, IR, removable battery), I think I could live without as I have them turned off pretty much all the time anyway, don't use the IR remote feature that much and take advantage of a spare battery. I think an external backup battery could be a better solution anyway (much higher capacity, can feature multiple USB ports for several phones/devices.)
Thinking about the expandable storage, it probably wouldnt be much of an issue, as my S4 is a 16GB model but you only get 8-9GB internal accessible even after debloating, where as a 16GB nexus 4 has about 13.5GB available and I could use my 32GB sd card with an OTG reader when need be, I also back up photos using Google auto backup as well which helps. Sorry just trying to convince myself to go ahead and sell my S4..
Still a great phone
In my opinion the N4 is still one of the best phones out there. I recommend it to everyone.

yep, think so as well
I'm going with Nexus 4. Nexus 5 is too expensive for me. I won't get cash from my mother to buy Nexus 5. I'll lend some money from friend or brother for Nex 4. Nexus 4 is for about 200-250$ here, in Poland, used and in good condition but from my friend's friend . Through something like ebay maybe I could get one for 180$ but I don't want to risk broken or stolen smartphone.
So, guys, thanks for answers and advices! Thanks so much. Everyone are getting "Thanks" button from me!
Let the Nexus force be with you, guys! .
