Hello there,
Like most people, the TouchWiz on the new Samsung Galaxy S4 is the most annoying and useless thing on the planet. Its slow, laggy, and intrusive, and you are wondering who you want to improve your device. Not only is TouchWiz annoying you but some other things within the Samsung/Android OS are annoying you, well here are some of the best solution and work arounds to all problems that you may encounter on the Galaxy S4.
LAUNCHER
TOUCHWIZ IS NO GOOD. If you are any type of developer or someone who generally likes to customize their device, you will not enjoy TouchWiz. The look and feel are terrible, its slow and laggy, and everything about it just seems childish. So here the solution to that. If you want to you can Unlock, Root, and Flash ROM's on to your device, IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCED. You can easily brick your device if you do not follow the directions correctly and will lead to a lot of hair tearing out. If you want to Root and Flash then check some other threads out, Here is a easy solution on the Play store.
Go and check out some of the Launchers in the Play store. There are so many to choose from. I personally used ADW on my Xoom, but now on my S4 I am using Nova Launcher Prime. This is a little pricey at $4.00 but is well worth it. You can do almost anything in the means of customizing the device. Grid size can be changes, animation, screen transition style. The long you play around with the Launcher more and more you find it can be customized easily. Plus the best part about Nova Prime is that you now have a "Stock" Android feel, plus is runs perfectly. If this Launcher isnt your first chose there is also Apex, Smart, Holo, Buzz, and Launcher 8. These launchers can be changed at any time and make your device completely your own.
APPS
Samsung put a lot of bloatware on this device. You will not use a lot of it. So how to you get rid of all of this software... Disable all apps that you are not going to use, NOT PROCESSES. Disabling these apps will ensure that they are not used and are not using up your battery. This ensures that what isnt important wont be used and use battery.
Stock apps that Samsung has are.......ok nothing to rave over. The Messaging app is a pain along with the Music Player. Ive replaced the Messaging app with GO SMS Pro, and then switched it to be default. Other Messaging apps include Messaging 7 and Sliding Messaging Pro, SMP is very laggy and is in Beta stages right now. For the Music Play I use NexMusic, which works perfectly. These apps ensure the best experience with the phone. I also replaced the Lockscreen with an app called Widgetlocker. I set the lockscreen in the settings to be NONE and then set up my Widgetlocker. This is a much better lockscreen than before.
Battery is always a major concern for all users, and BatteryGuru is awesome, its from Qualcomm and it helps with the processor usage. I will get into detail on how to conserve battery life in another section.
If you dont like a certain app that cannot be removed, and you want to find an alternate check YouTube and the Play store, or you can message me and I will help you with the problem app.
BATTERY
Improving battery life is such an important issue. Samsung has a lot of things that will kill your battery and give the phone a bad name in the battery division. Heres how to improve it. TURN OFF EVERYTHING. If you are not using GPS, Bluetooth, AirView and stuff like that, then turn it off. All it does is use battery... and a lot of it. I only have Sync, and or Wifi and Mobile Data depending on my location. Watch what settings and services you have running and you can save a lot of battery as long as you just turn off stuff that you are not using.
App management is huge. When you finish using apps make sure to delete it in the Multitasking tray, otherwise is will continue to run and use battery. Again, disable the unused app and manage usage on the others.
MOST IMPORTANT is the Screen, its a huge display. The higher the brightness, the less battery you are going to have. Also, with they type of screen this is, if you can use a black background you dont have to light up those pixels on the screen, which will save a ton of battery. Set the timeout to the lowest settings and make sure that you dont run a ton of graphic heavy apps or anything like that.
Overall manage you apps, screen, and services and you can get two days out of the phone. ALWAYS get a Full charge cycle. Run the battery dead and then fully recharge, but dont leave it on the charger. This will optimize the performance of the battery and phone.
QUESTIONS
If you have any question, send me a message and I can answer whatever question that you have. If I get enough request I can make a video to show these features. It will help, so let me know if any of you want a video.
Wow man, I like touchwiz. I ran AOSP for a year in my S3. I'm happy with touchwiz features. Hate the way it looks. Wish we had theme engine for touchwiz! Thanks for the tips. You definitely would enjoy liquid smooth. AOSP based rom!

TouchWiz is good in some regards, but it has a long way to go in the means of easy of use and smoothness. Trying to get some new Android phone to put some ROMS on, but sticking with my S4 with Nova. If you saw a setup video on this would you think it would help?
Thanks for the reply, they help so much.
I just tried a AOSP based rom and it was blazing fast. I just miss the camera and features too much. I really need to get off my ass and theme it out with images from my favorite theme engine theme. The beautiful thing about android is there is no right or wrong. It's all about freedom and the users choice to choose exactly what they want. The other beautiful thing is if your on the more intelligent side you can run both. Have both backed up and nandroid away

I prefer T/W with either Nova or Holo HD I also don't or won't pay for apps.
I've been flashing Roms since my S2 and I've flashed practically every aosp and aokp ROM for the S3.
As soon as the devs started offering tons of mods and themes for T/W I went back cuz I prefer the stability of T/W.
To each his own right now on my ATT S4 I'm running a Kanged GE ROM that's very smooth and fast.
I really don't care about battery life since I have a 7500 mAh ZeroLemon battery that I get 40 hours of run time.
Flash what you want find out what you enjoy most and have a nandroid. Have a blast with this wonderful device.:thumbup:

I tried a good AOSP rom yesterday because I was bored on my day off. Cane back to Touchwiz in 3 hours. It's so boring after a year of being on it faithfully. To each there own. Touchwiz is really growing on me. Love the features and amazing battery life. It's just as fast using omega and ktoonsez! I average over 4 hours of screen on time over 23 hours of idle time! Great combo

I ran nothing but aosp on the G3..hated tw..one day got tired of the continous bluetooth issue...went back to tw..haven't left it since. For the G4 tw rocks. I have ran most of the G4 aosp roms...BORING. same ole stuff. It is always going to be this against that. And I am sorry, but the tw rom is better in the battery dept. Way better.

Best video player ever made, I'm always using the motion gestures to answer phone in the car. I'm a mechanic who really appreciates the hand gesture for all kinds of reasons. No more tricks to get my sixaxis controller working. Smart stay is one can't live without once use to it. The stock browser is unmatched speed wise. I'm sure I can keep going but those are a couple reasons I prefer to run touchwiz for everyday use. The touchwiz crowd grows bigger with every new galaxy S release. Wow my friend in the heat of the battle. Exactly my thoughts. If you have a phone with these features, and you have a rom that does not use them, whats the point? Could have just stayed on the G3.

Battery with all the features enabled. Running at a clock speed range 189-1998
80% Brightness. I ****ing love it

S3 was my first Samsung device. I didn't care for touch wiz for a long time, not because of the gesture control or anything, but because of the app drawer being to the right and the bloated bulkiness of it. I ran aosp rooms for quite a while but then started playing with touchwiz based roms. I found synergys room and stayed on that until I got my s4. Now I use stock rooted which I have debloated and modded to near perfection. I get pretty good battery and experience little to no lag. I'm starting to enjoy gesture and all the touchwiz features (ir blaster is awesome).
Pretty much any flavor of Android is customizable and debloatable, so the only thing that you can really hate is the fact that you have to manually mod it (which is the best part of owning an android).
Sorry for the long post just don't understand such a strong hate for a different flavor of Android. ...
I don't know why there's so much hating of t.w sure its not great but then again neither is aosp there's also tons of issues on cm and p.a for that matter.
All of my devices(look at my SIG)are on cm or something aosp and honestly I've gotten to the point that I'm so bored of aosp and cm always Bluetooth issues or some little bug.....with the s3 u needed cm but so far on my s4
I'm on stock rooted deodexed ROM with over locked kernel and it runs amazing.Just use a launcher man and use tibu to remove bloatware this way u get better battery.
I get like almost 16 hours with almost 4 hrs screen time and over clocked CPU and GPU some people probably are just running mad sh#t on the background and that's why your phones are as#ed out.

... if nothing else... Backups/Restores take a quarter of the time!
Thats it? I have tried AOSP roms a few times but they never lasted longer then a few hours. I just keep going back to Sense, I would love to hear about what is better about AOSP vs Sense. Are those backups including system data or just apps + their data?
What I like about aosp is the increased performance and customization. I get much better battery life compared to sense roms, my phone feels much snappier and the availability of themes/mods is unparalleled. Not to mention cm7 is always being updated and has the most support of any custom rom.

I was trying out CM7 and while it was nice there were a few things I missed from my old rom and wasn't sure if I could get it on CM7.
On my old rom the pull down has the flashlight icon so I can turn it on and off easily also I was looking for some task bar themes. I found a few but not too many unless I'm not looking in the right place.
I really hate that standard gingerbread green theme.
You can put the flashlight toggle in the notification pulldown and you can also set it to death ray which is way brighter than the sense flashlight. That also reminds me of another useful feature that was added recently, you can long press an icon in the pull down menu and it will take you to the setting for that particular feature. As far as themes, there are quite a few in the market and floating around in the themes section as well.

*sigh* anyone who claims they are getting dramatically better battery life on an aosp rom vs a sense rom needs to actually test it and show proof. I've done testing using apps like System Panel and Battery Monitor Widget and I saw NO difference in battery drain between cm6 and my stock sense rom. Neither when idle, asleep, or while actively using the phone.
On the dinc, the two biggest battery killers by far are the screen and 3g data. And no rom is going to change that.
I'm glad that we have options but I hate when people claim things are faster or have better battery life but offer no objective proof.
My top 3 reasons.
1. Increased speed/responsiveness.
2. DSP Manager, in 2.3 you get bass boost, once sense hits 2.3, it may have it too however. But for the time being. AOSP only.
3. The super bright flashlight! Seriously, probably the second most used app on my phone, next to SMS.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Hm sorry if I don't want to spend my time making graphs and charts, doing testing etc, so I can "back up" my opinion that battery life and performance is better on aosp as opposed to sense.. As I see it, sense offers fancy graphics and social integration but of course uses more CPU and therefore battery as well. If this is a ridiculous claim I apologize.

I'd say its more dependent on what services you use in sense. Like friend stream, news, stocks, weather, and such. And how often it updates, how many live widgets you have etc. And AOSP ROM's typically don't have as much to sync, and less stuff running all the time. Hence the better battery life. Also depends on the kernel you use.

True, those things in sense are optional and not using them or syncing them less often could help but that kind of defeats the purpose of using a sense rom.. Not to mention that the framework that allows those things to work is still running in the background even if you're not using those services. AOSP kernels do seem to have better support as well.

This may be completely shallow of me, but I HATE Sense's visual style. It's just too cartoony for my liking. Too me it looks like something that belongs on a children's toy, not a legitimate piece of consumer electronics. It's an ugly, cartoony battery hog. I know that some people think that AOSP Android looks "boring", but I greatly prefer it to Sense.

that may be true, but sense was made to be usable in a smartphone SENSE. AOSP is very boring, and a battery hog on gingerbread. Until it is released for the inc, we are just using someone elses build. It is easy to come in here and blast something in which you dont like, but I ask, if you hate sense, why did you buy the dinc in the first place? You obviously have the wrong phone. to come in here and bash this phone because its too "cartoon like", is kind of stupid, since you bought the phone. I personally get much better battery life off of the sense 2.0 z roms than I do off of cm7. I really cant stand people who just bash a rom, just to bash. Everyone has there own preference, why not just leave it to that. If the sense roms are so cartoony, why the hell did you buy the phone, you look like an idiot for bashing a phone you paid alotof money for dude.

First of all I didn't buy my Dinc, I received it as a gift this past Christmas. I didn't get to choose my phone or my carrier. I love the Incredible but I hate Sense. And I'm getting better battery life with CM7 then I get with any Sense based ROM. You talk about people having they're own preference and leaving it at that, why don't you take your own advice ans stop insulting people for having a different opinion than yours?
I came from a Droid 2 and I'll definitely say sense>blur but was mainly attracted to the Inc because its fully unlockable and has goo(d dev support. Getting better battery and gingerbread is just a bonus.

I've been doing some tests on CM7 recently... with my battery life.
I have the stock battery, using Tiamat 3.3.8, -25 UV. I don't use any self-updating widgets other than Fancy Widgets Home for weather and clock. On my second page I have SuperManager widget for monitoring free RAM, not saying it helps battery life, but definitely with performance. OC'ed at 1113, and using performance governor. LauncherPro Plus is my default launcher...
Yesterday when I went to sleep, my phone had been off of the charger for 13 hours plus, and I was still at 51%.
Perhaps I don't use my phone as much as ya'll... but I browsed internet for a good 45 minutes.... sent and received a total of about 50 text messages.... got about 4 emails (everything on autosync) and tweaked some settings in launcher pro.
Maybe it's because I stopped using so many autoupdating widgets, but the last week I have been seeing a dramatic improvement.
I find CM7 to be faster than Sense... until I load it up with widgets. Beautiful widget clock, calendar widget, contacts widget... Once I've added these, CM7 is noticeably laggier and generally slower than Sense.

And you don't think that's overreacting just a little? I didn't say I hate a person, I said that I hate a custom UI on a mobile operation system. The thread is about AOSP vs. Sense, and I simply commented that I greatly prefer the look and feel of AOSP Android to the look and feel of sense. I don't hate everything about sense, I like the flip clock widget and HTC's camera app is great, but the fact is that I do hate Sense's visual style and think that it is better suited for a children's toy then an actual piece of consumer electronics.
Up time, or time off the charger, means almost nothing, considering you'll only lose a percent every 2-3 hours. You guys need to look at your AWAKE time, time you are actually using the phone. I find I can typically get about five hours of awake time out of a full charge on my sense Rom. Cm7 gave me fourish, I don't recall what cm6 was but I know it wasn't as bad as 7.

Ok I saw ics like most and im somewhat excited by the possibility of this update on the sgs2.
Now rather than focussing on ports, dev issues, etc. How about we talk about what were looking forward to the most?
Personally I've always found the ui of android lacking compared to its piers like iOS and WP7. My personal interest is in the new look, im running the excellent theme by vertimus and its made using the phone more enjoyable (odd I know) I think options like folders on the homescreens, and even the handling of the running apps makes the ui seem far more user friendly.
my second point I like is the facial unlock, i've never liked unlocking phone via codes or patterns, one people can learn them, and second there labourius
So i'll ask once DO NOT START RANTING ABOUT THE PORT, DEMANDING, ETC. JUST TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO.
moderators if you think this is a bad post feel free to shut it down, and ill hold tongue re ics til a later time, id also suggest if some derails this topic u ban them, as a warning..
So what you looking forward to?

I think iOS has a good interface for a toy with that app drawer and nothing more where you don't even have widgets and you have to go to settings to enable or disable wifi, etc.
Now its about android or wp7 and yes... a real improvement for the intarface is wellcome.
To be honest, I am more than satisfied with my sgs 2 right now. However I will say I do look forward to hardware acceleration. I might not see the difference, but its still appreciated. Also maybe some system improvements would be nice so android would be more efficient at handling resources.
Quite a lot actually...
The camera interface and multitude of extra features that ICS has on offer.
Not much of TW. I mean TW has got better, but is still not in Sense's league (which actualy is pretty big resource hog, the reason why htc phones have never had good battery life). I wouldn't extra software tweaks and additional apps (bloatware..), but keep it non obtrusive.
Keep it as close to stock in terms of visual overlay. Stock ICS does look amazing.
Better battery management, no android os bug.
Better audio quality in video recording.
Better optimised browser and tabbed browsing. All of us do use third party browsers but an excellent stock browser wont hurt. Not everyone is a nerd and we do expect some things to be good , out of the box.
Steer clear of trying to copy ios.. (Sammy you know what I am talking about).
Loads of expectations but well that is just me.

Basically we were left out when honeycomb came out. They got the deal and we didn't so this is the update that brings us in the same league.
I am looking forward to Linux kernel 3. Efficiency Improvements. Better games with joystick support. Word like spell check throughout UI. Even smoother graphics. Kick ass mobile platform besting multi tasking. Data usage control like a BOSS.
Am waiting to see what Samsung does to ICS. I feel with touchwiz 4 they did an awesome job.

Honestly, this phone is close to perfect, as was my Android-running HD2 before it, but anything that improves battery life is particularly appreciated on the sgs2... I know its the old conundrum of battery tech not improving at a time of touchscreen frenzy, but a phone is a phone - something you occasionally need to depend on - and 24 hours does not cut it.

It should be as battery resourceful as an iphone. xD
I'm looking forward to what the manufacturers are going to do...
What is HTC going to do with sense, what about Touchwiz, Motoblur etc etc?
The ICS UI/launcher looks great and my question is: Does it it need further modification by those companies?
I'm looking forward to rubbing my iphone using friends noses in the dirt!
Nah, just the smoothness and overall optimized speed and look of the ui. Not too big a fan of touchwiz ui though! We'll see.....

It seems a lot of users are unaware that touchwiz is hardware accelerated, including the stock browser. I underclock my sgs2 to 500mhz and its just as smooth and slick as default 1200mhz, no difference what so ever. If you use other launchers, you will notice the difference big time. Only really need the extra power for graphically demanding games like Shadowgun and Blood and Glory, and Flash player.

The extra power for graphically demanding games isn't coming in the form of ICS. For that we need an improved GPU which unfortunately won't be until the sgs3 is released. That being said, try Siyah kernel, you can overclock the GPU and have no graphical issues.

I'm hoping ICS reduces OS fragmentation. Sadly though, I fear it will only lead to more of it.
Improved battery management. Really, I don't ask for much.
i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

Hello, I've been using custom Touchwiz ROM (Goldeneye for Telus) and it occasionally stutters at various points such as opening app or folder, etc. It's very minor but considering that it's a new phone, I was a little disappointed. Then I tried the Google Edition and it is seriously lacking on features. It's snappier but there's no toggles for notification, can't quickly clear out opened apps, can't create folders in app drawer (I like to organize them), camera isn't as good as the Touchwiz due to features - I also like it that I can record a video by clicking the button on screen, and a few minor details that I can't remember now.
So is there any benefit of using Google Rom over custom Touchwiz rom other than it being snappier? Does anyone prefer Google Rom? MOD EDIT: NO BEST ROM QUESTIONS
Every user is different. So it's best to try different ones and see which you like best.
I prefer the Google ROMS (stock android) because it has no bloat, pretty fast and snappy, and looks premium, clean, and (IMO) amazing. I don't normally use TW ROMS mainly because of the looks and bloat. For example, I'm not a fan of the toggles in the notification bar, so I got stock android and had a clean and efficient notification bar. Many of the "S" features I never used , so I thought I might as well get rid of them.
Camera is something I would actually use TW for, but since I don't take many photos it didn't seem necessary (for me at least).
As for creating folders and stuff, use a custom launcher, they'll have more features than the stock launchers on both.
However this all does come down to preference, if you value the features, stick with TW, if you value a premium look and feel, use stock Android ROMS. Best part is that you can switch between both anytime you like, just make backups. (I switched every 15 days on my S3 so I got the best of both). Since Modaco Switch will be coming to the S4 (i337 also I hope), it will be even easier to switch between the two, and enjoy both types of ROMS.

Ya, I just tried the Google Edition rom today and.. It feels that I have to try very hard to like the rom. Do people usually use a different launcher to make it somewhat more user friendly? I mean... I like stock feeling and all.. But it's seriously lacking on some features.

Mmm. I'm interested in using a launcher but I have no idea what they do lol. I'm very new, coming from an iPhone, so I still have to adapt to Android - It's a great switch! Loving the larger screen, removable battery and expendable memory! Do you have any suggestion about which launcher provides the most features? Are they generally super stable and do they consume more battery than the default settings? Thanks!
Try apex or nova launcher. Both let you do folders in the app drawer.
A aosp ROM like CyanogenMod gets rid of the bloat and make the phone faster but still retain notification toggles.
I put cm on my s4 the day I got it. Its very fast and smooth.

Yeah, I considered AOSP roms too. However, there isn't a stable 4.3 CM or AOKP yet and I would like to switch to the newest possible OS since I have to set up every again. I also read something regarding AOSP camera being sub par comparaing to touchwiz or GE firmware - Not sure if it's all just a myth..
I'll most definitely checkout these launchers. Seems interesting. Thanks.
Nova Launcher is what I use, tons of customizations, very stable, and not really any different battery consumption. You should try all the popular launchers and see what you like. For some cool 3D ones check out Next Launcher, and for other ones apex, Holo, and ADW are popular. Atom launcher is a cool one too. Try all of them and see which one you'll like, they all are unique ;D

I have problems getting notifications to work properly with some apps when I restore data also, so I usually just restore the apps (except for games and stuff where I don't want to lose progress and don't care about notifications anyway).
As for whether I like stock Android better or not the answer is a definitive yes. When I got my S4 I used it as is only until I could get back to my computer and flash a custom recovery and a new ROM (CM 10.2 at the moment). Yeah, there are some features that you lose, but for me they are gimmicky and unnecessary (I emphasize me because I recognize that some people really do like the TW stuff and like I always say: good for you, that's what Android is ultimately all about). Stock Android, on the other hand, looks good, is functional, is fast, and works the way I want/expect it to.
I also happen to think that TW is butt ugly, but that's purely subjective.
I haven't tried one of the GE ROMs yet but CyanogenMod gets close enough with extra features that I like (do not disturb, anyone?) so that's what I tend to gravitate towards. There is nothing wrong with going either way, of course, and ultimately it boils down to what you want from your phone. Again, that to me is a big part of what makes Android so damn appealing (and why locked bootloaders and anti-tweaking efforts piss me off).
It is stable, but if you like bland, and lack of features, then it would be the os to use...

Hah, no bias here at all.
The Google "Experience"
Having tried both a custom TW rom and a GE rom, I have to give the TW roms the win.
This is why:
1) The dialer is pretty bad, I'm not a fan of deciphering hieroglyphics to determine how to navigate the dialer. Also the contacts app UI is awful.
2) The GE launcher lacks features offered in free editions of 3rd party launchers.
3) The stock email program and widgets are not as good or as functional as the Samsung email program and S Planner.
4) I actually like being able to turn on/off wi-fi and BT without having to navigate menus and/or install space and memory hogging widgets.
5) Multi-window is pretty awesome.
6) The GE/CM ROMS have some pretty showstopping bugs with BT, microphone issues during calls, random reboots, etc.
As someone already mentioned earlier about its personal preference. I myself tried to hard to like GE rom, but couldn't because of lots of things that I use on TW is missing. The only thing I ever missed was photosphere feature, and that issue got solved by installing GE camera app. Regarding smoothness, it's not bad at all, and this is coming from a guy who has seen worst from froyo times to super good with JB. Also, you can disable lots of bloat even if you are not rooted. But of course people who come here are not the one who likes to do things without rooting their device and once you root, you can disable all the bloat tou want. But until and unless you try for yourself, it's hard to know what you'll miss from either of the rom.

You can drag down the notification bar with two fingers and long press on wifi and bluetooth to toggle them on/off.
I come from two years of using a nexus devices. I got this phone for free, otherwise I would still be using the galaxy nexus. I miss the easy flashing, fastboot etc. This phone will last me till next fall and at that time, I'll move to the nexus 6
Needless to say, I use a bone stock ge Rom with nova launcher.

I would prefer to use the GE ROM over Touchwiz but for whatever reason I can't find a single browser that doesn't stutter horribly as compared to aosp ROMs. For that reason alone I am using CM 10.2.

You've probably tried these popular choices.. But I use Dolphin browser and its performance is pretty close to stock AOSP browser with some nice added features. I've also tried Firefox and it's pretty damn close! But either way, try the beta versions of the two and see if you like them. .

Tempted to walk into my local 3 shop and pick one up for £399 looks like a great phone and will have better battery than Nexus 5 which is a big thing for me. My issue is the software, is it that bad out of the box say versus a Nexus 4 running on pure Android? Havent played around with custom ROMs but thinking I might have to with this device.

I was used to running cm 10.2 on my lg g pro (the g2 is so much better imo) and the software is fine. I just flashed clean rom and a mod to get rid of the at&t logo and phone volume slider and I can't be happier. I also got rid of the soft buttons and use GMD, I almost never touch the back buttons with the knock on and made nova launcher double tap to lock. Pretty freaking awesome.

Came from GNex with AOSP ROM and I think LGs ROM is okay. I was expecting worse, but it's not terrible. There is way too much bloat (Verizon), but I will most definitely be install a custom ROM as soon as AOSP ROMs hit the grid. I do like the knock on feature and some other stuff they baked in though.
I have a few apps out of the box that are draining my battery at idle which I will have to figure out.

It's not that bad at all. Certainly better than Touchwiz. I actually like this LG UI more than any I've used outside of some of the modded AOSP ROMS (CM, AOKP, PA etc.). It has a few quirks, but nothing that I would consider to be a deal breaker.
I ran tw I ran aokp, I ran cm plus a multitude of kangs of all three including miui.
I am 5 days in and not once got bored, glitches, battery drains. Its got all the customazions I need, except dpi and permissions. I am cured flashaholic. That says a lot about the software coming from an avid flasher
I have been a big fan of cm for some time now and love the stock android look. I may very well install a theme to get this look at some point but I see no real reason to flash or even root at this point.
The software is smooth and customizable. It is heavily skinned in a love it or hate it kind of way, but themes make it far less of an issue.
Hope this helps!

Came from a nexus 4 and I love the software.
My only wish is that I want more multitasking stuff (like TW's mutiwindow just without the bloat )
yeah multitasking is android 8ssue they implemented window support on an app per app and not os wide basis, thats why not all aps are launchable that way
The LG skin/software is awesome. I really like it. Its fast, fluid, and has many features. example: theme keyboard, theme ui keys, nav ring shortcuts, pop up windows for text and phone calls, etc..
With the nexus 5 predicted to have a 2300mAh battery and a worse camera at £399 it's a cracking deal for the LG G2. I work at 3 and am tempted to take up the deal.

The skin is more that adequate for anything you want to do. this isnt 2010 where htc sense and samsungs stuff blew ****. everything is great. whether it is motorola or sony's or whoever, they are all fine....
I hate that stock android is taken to the point of god like. its good. just like sense. or touchwiz. stock isnt better than either of them. they will all do the samething. in fact, often these skins on top have more options and are a fresh breath of air from stock
No I love the software on the g2. I had 2 s4's and both lagged and didn't run as well as I wanted it too. Great processor but software bogged it down. I like this phone so far for its software and its beautiful screen. Samsung threw whatever they thought up into tw and it was a lot of junk I personally didn't use nor anyone that I know personally
