[Q] Flashing from AOSP to TW ROMs - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have recently been switching my ROMs up alot and have been having issues going from AOSP back to TW through regular flashing of the ROMs.
I generally don't have any problems switching from TW to AOSP, but whenever I flash the other way I am just left with a black screen after the Sammy logo.
To effectively get TW back on my device I have to Odin back to stock and then Odin flash a recovery and start from scratch.
I was curious as to the rest of the communities experience with this as I may just be missing a crucial step when switching between the two systems.
I usually format the /system and do a factory reset and wipe both caches
Does anyone else have a problem like this?

sounds like a kernel issue since your wiping system and data and cache? so i wiould flash another tw kernel when going back to tw if it doesnt boot, i use the kt kernel.

Nexus 7 kernel issues...

I posted this over at rootz earlier today and didn't get any bites so I figured I'd give it a shot over here.
I may be the only one in the world experiencing this problem. Looked around quite a bit and don't see any sign of others having this issue... Anyway, my N7 doesn't seem to like it when I flash a new kernel. I've tried several different kernels and when ever I flash one my display will not wake up once it times out or if I turn the display off manually. Once the screen goes dark i have to hold the power button down and reboot. I have zero issues with custom kernels as long as they are baked into the rom. I typically wipe cache and dalvic after flashing kernels...

youre experiencing "sod", which is a fairly common problem with android 4.2.1 source code(not as common on the n7 as the gnex, but common enough). do you flash the kernel with the rom or do you flash the kernel separately?
This happens after switching out the kernel on any ROM I've used. Have not flashed a different kernel at the same time I flashed a ROM. I don't think that will make a difference. I can however flash kernels over my stock rooted backup... I don't know. Just weird and bums me out being limited like this...

I would just factory reset and start from scratch. Do you have any settings set like UV??

I have tried flashing back to stock, relocking and starting from scratch. I do not undervolt...
A few good folks in the android community had experienced similar happenings and suggested lean kernel... Flashed it earlier this evening and working like a charm.

Well to start. You can read the stickies, the how tos, and watch some of the videos.
Then there is also that g o o g l e thingy.
That would really help. It will probably keep you from turning your device into a shiny paperweight.

I've not had good luck with custom or source kernels. I use oudhs recovery and do a backup within recovery before flashing a kernel. The only combination my phone behaves with is stock kernel. I don't know why nor do I have any speculations. My phone just doesn't work right with custom or source built kernels. The phone either heats up fast or the Google keyboard I use starts acting flaky, so that's why I stay stock rooted hotspot mod with custom recovery. This phone is a totally different beast than my s2.

I agree. S4 acts way different than my S3 as far as flashing things go. Seems the S4 is way more sensitive and does some wonky stuff sometimes.

First, download a custom kernel such as Chronic or KTweaker, then nandroid, wipe caches, flash the kernel zip, fix permissions, and reboot. ROMs come with their own kernels; to get your original kernel back, just reflash your ROM.

What ROM/kernel combinations do you use? The only buggy kernel I've used is KTweaker. On Carbon 4.3, it reboots whenever my phone attempts to stream video. It may help to change your governor, especially if the kernel's default is Interactive.

Just coming back to the s4 after being gone about a month

Hello all. As I wrote in my title, I'm just coming back to the s4 after being gone for about a month. I've flashed a few roms and I've noticed that data stops working on almost all the ones I've tried. I tried the Google edition and flashed a different kernel to get WiFi working--when I did WiFi worked but data was broken. Then I tried tri force, data did not work. Finally I tried the one with the weird name (sorry--I know that doesn't help much but I know viper appears in quite a few places in the thread). I am currently on liquid smooth (cm based 10.1) and thankfully it's flawless. I love it but I like variety and I wish I could find a debloated TW rom to play around with. Why it's the data borked on so many of them? I'm not exactly a noob--been an android user for years and I've flashed many a roms. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, unless there's something different or weird with the s4. Can anyone kindly shed some light on my predicament? I'm now downloading negalite. Gonna see if that one has functioning data. It almost seems as tho you have to flash a custom kernel all the time now to get data. Is this right? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: rom name I couldn't remember is visionX (by the axman)
Been on Triforce since July with KTkernal and haven't had any issues at all. Negalite is a good one, I like it a lot. If you stick with it think about setting up svn as there's lots of updates.

I have no idea why as I've tried everything I can think of and read but aosp runs better on my S4 than tw, as crazy as that sounds its been true for me. I love Aosp so I'm good. I'm on mf9 via otas and tried all recoveries made and always end up with some type of system or phone fc or the "detected an app".. .blah blah warning which annoys the crap outa me so I just stay on aosp as there are a ton of great ones for us and they work wonderfully -the once in a while call bug which I do not come across that much really ams when I do I made a shortcut for fast reboot via rom toolbox and just hit it when it happens and its good.

Yes I am, data, wifi and all that are fine. Haven't had even one reboot with Triforce, battery life is great. I really have not had any issue with it at all, it's rock solid for my phone.

Well I installed negalite and so far it's perfect. Everything seems to be working & it has a great amount of tweaking enabled. Thanks guys. Now I have a solid aosp rom and a solid TW rom. I'm one happy camper.

Just FYI.....If you flash a TW MF9 rom with the stock kernel and WiFi is broken after boot (can and has happened with Negalite, TriForce, etc) there is a modified stock kernel that can be flashed to fix if needed.

I must be lucky, because I have had no such issues with any rom (AOSP or TW). If I flash the stock rooted MF9 rom followed by the stock MF9 kernel, I have wifi and data. Same goes for any other TW rom as well as every AOSP rom I've tried.

Having stability problems with ALL touchworks roms

Hi everyone, I am having an issue whenever I install a touchwork rom that it will inevitably randomly reboot, or crash then reboot at least once a day. I am not going to mention any specific roms here because it has happened consistently with several of the most popular touchwork roms on this forum. I also considered the possibilty of a rogue app causing these problems, however yesterdayI installed one of my favorite roms and did not install a single third party application, to rule out that possibility. Today it just rebooted again this morning out of nowhere.
Caveat is that when I tried a 4 day trial on a AOSP rom, i had no such issues, even though i TB'ed my apps and restored everything.
Now I know an easy solution is to just stay on a non TW rom, but I happen to like several TW features and can't seem to figure out whats going on here.
Any ideas?
I'm assuming you have an i337m. I'd Odin the stock firmware and see if you have the reboot issues on it. If you don't it's most likely the rom that is causing the issue our the way you're flashing them

So you're on mdl firmware? Are you doing full wipes, system, data, cache and dalvik, when you're installing the roms?

every single time. Again, this is only happening with TW roms. I've also tried stock and KT kernel with same roms.

Issue flashing 'Google' edition ROMs...

Hi, I'm probably being very idiotic atm but I can't think of any logical issues.
I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S4 i337.. I downgraded from NB1 to MK2, got root, installed safestrap, and attempted to install this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544474
It was my understanding this came with Loki-Doki (saw it floating around in a different thread asking if it worked, can find it if nessecary) as a patch. So I downloaded and backed up my stock install, and attempted to install this.
Now the problem is when I boot, it returns me to a bootloop, if you could call that progress.. It vibrates occasionally while bootlooping (samsung - safeboot - blackscreen - vibrate - samsung....). I still have access to safestrap, download mode and so on, if it helps at all. I've also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537495 WITH loki-doki (as it is explicitly stated) to no success either..
I'm looking for one of two solutions;
how to get stock firmware back, or how to properly install this? Or any variation thereof. . . I don't know what the problem is ahaha
Bumping to say multiple wipes>reflashes later the blue screen has yet to occur, not sure what that was... Bootlooping is the huge problem now!
You can't use that rom. You need a tw based rom. This one is aosp

Doesn't the second one work with my phone though? And the comments say 'working on i337'etc on the first one... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537495
It's still giving me the same problems with loki-doki.

Guh. Well ****. They should make that more obvious in the OP.. saw no mention of either of those being an issue..
Any similar roms that still have TouchWiz or should I just roll back to OTA 4.4.2?

So will it ever be possible to flash AOSP ROMs on NB1?
Not until the bootloader is unlocked. There is no telling when that will be.

Best bet is to find a ROM that you like, then install the Google Experience Launcher apk. It will give your phone the stock google launcher.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Domination Theme will also extensively theme your touchwiz rom to give it a more complete AOSP look without an AOSP rom.
All right thanks for the help guys.
