Hello all,
Based on official specifications, the Galaxy S4 (i9500 ? i9505?) is supposed to handle the HEVC video codec (H.265).
I tried to download a HEVC sample video (see here : http://www.elecard.com/en/download/videos.html) but I just can hear the sound on my i9505, even with third party software...
I've done some searches on this forum and the others and there is no real feedback about this.
So ? Supported or not ?

Hello everyone,
I can't find any way to have a video decoded using H/W Decoding with any player, video, nor custom roms.
With official Roms, I used WMP to transcode and send videos to my MB526 via MTP mode, which resulted in wmv files. This way, MX Player was able to play videos using hardware decoding (how ever, as far as I remember, the quality was sloppy).
But of course, that solution does not work anymore with custom roms, as MTP, wma and wmv are gone.
Right now I send .avi or .mp4 files using ftp; but I can't figure out a way to make them play using hardware decoding. All I got are insults like "can't play using H/W Decoder" (S/W works just fine, as long as I simplify the work for the chip : lower quality and mpeg2; but even then I think that HW decoding would spare the battery)
I tried :
- Different ROMs : Quark's CM10 roms, and White Rabbit (CM7) roms (among others)
- Different Codecs : MP4 (h264), Mpeg2, aac audio, mp3 audio, etc.
- Different Resolutions and Qualities : 854x480, 320x240, 25fps, 15fps, etc.
- Different Transcoders : vlc, ffmpeg, ...
- Different Players : MX Player (with or without armv7 codec), VLC, stock
Even in software mode, I have to decrease quality of the video to (150Mb for 20 minutes in mpeg2) to be able to run videos smoothly.
I searched everywhere in the forum but couldn't find any answer (I saw people complaining they can't play 720p with HW decoding, but I can't even play anything with HW decoding).
Do anyone knows what I did wrong ? Or how I could get a workaround ?
Regards
Howdy Folks,
Ive recently changed from a Galaxy S3 (which played video I could through at it without a problem) to a Note 3 and it seems that AC3 isnt supported natively for it. If I run the Video with MX Player's software decoder it all works fine. Its a major annoyance though having such an expensive replacement that doesnt perform the same functions as an older unit.
Anyone else able to confirm it wont play AC3 Natively, is there some codec app I can install that works with all video player apps ??

To be honest it's just as easy to use VLC or MX or something similar, native video player is limited (slightly) I can't really comment as to what it plays cause I have yet to use it, Straight to MX for me.

Why Samsung chose to drop AC3 native support from the Note 3 is beyond me, I think even the Note 2 had AC3 support out of the box as did the Galaxy S3 & 4.
here's the solution

Hi,
my device is Galaxy Nexus Maguro. Been using Cyanogen nightlies for ages, 720p mkv's have been working without any issues. (SW / HW+ custom codec armv7 NEON modes)
On Omnirom, playback stutters (which ever nightly version of the rom since it's been available to maguro device)
Can anyone confirm (on this device / any other) / help me out please ?
I suppose it has something to do with HW accel....
thx in advance
Hello guys,
Is that tablet able to decode HEVC 10bits profile ? (Hardware decoding)
On Samsung website it's just written that Exynos 7870 has the HEVC support but not more detail.
Thank you for you answers.
There is no way to tell if it's available or not because the default video player just play videos without asking for how to decode it, maybe someone with Mx player can see weather he has the option to activate hardware decoding
I made a small search on some of the forums here and I didn't find anything similar to my issue. It's my first time posting here, so I'm not very sure if this is the right place to open a new thread for my issue.
I am very basicly familiar with smartphone terminology, so please excuse any such misuse or any providing of unnecessary information. I also might be repetitively descriptive.
Phone: LeEco Le PRo 3 Elite (x722)
ROM: EUI 5.8.020S (preinstalled from Bangood)
Software used: MX Player
My issue: can't play videos in HEVC 10-bit (Main 10 profile). Why?
Now I'll try to be more descriptive.
Whenever I try to play a video in HEVC 10-bit (Main 10 profile), the screen colours during playback will go mostly red green blue, etc. I used this website- jell.yfish.us (you can google to see if it's legit) - to download each sample for testing, while using MX Player with the HW and HW+ decoders. What I noticed was that the phone would play without a problem any HEVC 8-bit (Main profile) video from those available in the above site, but it wouldn't be able to reproduce colours normally, as I already said, even with the smallest in file size HEVC 10-bit video. Even when selecting the SW decoder (which I suppose stands for SoftWare decoder?) on MX Player, the phone would struggle a lot and playback would lag considerably.
On the other hand, I have my Xiaomi Mi 5 (Standard), which has the same Snapdragon 820 chipset, but a slightly worse (?) CPU according to GSMArena, while running on a MIUI 9 Global 8.3.29 rom. So, this phone would play flawlessly, again on the MX Player app (HW decoder), almost any the HEVC 10-bit video sample included in the aforementioned website. Only with the exception of those videos with an overall Bitrate over 250 Mbps.
My questions are:
1) Why is LeEco x722 in the above condition, not capable of playing any 10-bit HEVC videos, while Xiaomi Mi 5 is totally able to play them, when both phones use the same chipset, which supports H.265 codec playback?
2) Is there any possible way so that x722 can be able to play these kinds of videos?
Just because a phone is capable of doing something, it doesn't mean it can do it natively. The x722's camera is capable of recording 60fps too, but you'd need to activate the feature with special code (perhaps through a Magisk package). The OnePlus 5 can stream HD footage but can't do it through Netflix unless you mail your phone in for OnePlus to enable Widevine DRM on it.
I don't know any specific ways to get HEVC playback to work, but you could try switching to a custom ROM like LOS.
Install MX Player

Hi! I have the exact same problem - same phone, same rom. Were you able to find a solution? Have you tried custom roms? I'm pretty content with this rom, but if custom rom will fix this problem, I'll look into it.
Try to use genesys 26S, or stock eui 6 rom (4pda link), or search aicp build with working l1, or just try latest los 16
