Question about storage allocation in nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all..
I just got my nexus 4..
Feels awesome... So fluid...
Came from sg2 so I'm new to noon removable storage space in nexus...
I want to start modding..
Question I have is where in the storage can we store files which we don't want to be wiped once we flash the ROM ?
Since the is no SD card...
And would doing factory reset completely wipe all files from the storage including internal storage?
So where to keep the backup... Music... Etc... I don't want to reload everything after flashing a new ROM while I experiment to find the right one...

keep them in your storage, a factory reset only wipes all the data/caches, it doesnt touch storage.

No, a factory reset does not wipe your internal storage. Just save your files to storage as usual and they will all be stored under 'SD card' > 'internal storage', which is not touched during flashing and factory reset unless u wipe or format the SD card. Also I highly recommend using multiple cloud storage. The ones I use are 'Google music' 'Dropbox', 'Sugar sync', 'Drive' 'Mega' & the new 'Copy'. Definitely try Mega.com, which offers 50 GB of free storage with no file size limits! And the new 'Copy' app, which has an app for android & offers 15gb free plus an extra 5gb for each person u invite! ( here please use my invite code so we can both get an extra 5gb, https://www.copy.com/?r=PHSnzf )

you mean in /sd? i usually mount the storage on pc and go to town deleting crap.
Go to settings, sd and phone storage, then unmount and forgot your sd, external or internal

[SOLVED] What's wrong? 16GB Nexus 7 and just 900MB available storage?

Something is not right:
I have used up 2.99GB for apps + movies, just 3.5MB for pictures, 20KB anf 64MB for Downloads - and yet I only have just 900MB storage space remaining???
Where are the approx. 10 other GB I should have available as storage space... Any idead/suggestions, anyone ??

Did it show that you had 13.x GB free when you first got it? I've read of a few instances where the other people who had this problem had to do something like a factory reset before it properly allocated the free space.
Give it a factory reset/wipe, I was missing some 3GB out of nowhere that I could see.
Thanks, guys... I'll give that a try!

Dumb me...
Apparently, Clockworkmod backups do not show in the JB Settings>Storage view.
Found out about my "rather excessive backup habit" after downloading the excellent "DiskUsage" app from the Play Store... Deleted some of my backups and did a "Factory Reset" via Settings menu.
Et voilà, 10+ GB available again...
Thanks androidarmin,
I was having a hard time figuring out why I couldnt get rid of the 13GB of data that was on my tab.
I tried the factory reset and clearing cache and all that....but all of the old data was still on there.....games and apps.
I wanted to start fresh!
DiskUsage worked awesomely!

I too had this problem and tried factory reset but to no avail. I suspect the only way is to wipe everything from recovery (i.e. including internal storage)

Effect of rom flash on internal memory

Hi,
Just getting my head around the differences between the way that the 32gb internal memory on this works compared with the microsd card slot on my HTC Sensation.
Now when I flash a new rom on my HTC the SD card data is left intact, e.g. media files and backup data.
When I get around to rooting and flashing roms on my N7 it would be nice to think a fair chunk of data stored on the internal memory could be left intact, but i'm getting the impression that it all gets wiped, every time. Is that right? Are there ways of preserving data, perhaps partitioning the internal memory or something like that?
Cheers.
Data is safe as long as you don't wipe it or flash the factory image.

[Q] Internal Sotrage Problems

Ive been fooling around with my phone, by that i mean rooting and such. But really recently ive noticed that my internal storage is almost completely full no matter if i factory reset my phone and wipe all caches. The sizes don't even add up, the biggest thing is clockwerk recovery at 2gb but somehow there is another 7gb of something that i can't see. Is there files hidden somewhere that are causing this huge usage of space?
HELP
Use ES file explorer, enable to show hidden files. That should answer your question.

Use clean master from the play store, it will detect what is not needed and ask if you want to delete it.

even that doesn't help there is still 80% of storage taken up by something, could my CWM backups somehow be ending up on my internal storage instead of my SD because it seems that way
Use es file explorer to move any important files from internal storage to external storage (like cwm backups or photos) then wipe internal storage. After that you should have about 9 GB free on your 16 GB s4.

The nandroid backups were what was causing the huge space problems, I moved them to my sdcard and deleted them off my internal sdcard and I now have all my space back.

Get space back ?

Hello |
After installing custom rom , and making a nandroid backup of original rom (without app installed) , I was left with 800 mb
free on the internal memory.
How can i gain more memeory?
To flash again and wipe internal storage as well ?
Thanks.
Your backup is probably taking up significant space, possibly several gigabytes. Look in the TWRP directory and copy the backups off the device and delete them from the device (or better yet, just backup to an SD card). Otherwise to go Settings - Storage and tap Internal Storage and see what is taking up the space, and delete as necessary, pay attention to Cached data space, that can easily grow to several gigabytes as well, tapping that will prompt you delete all app cache data which is generally safe to do.
Will wiping internal storage help? lol... yes, of course it will if your space is used up by files in internal storage.
Thanks
Even after moving backup to external sd. There is only 4 GB free, out of 16 GB. App is about 2 GB .
It seems strange ........
