First Impression:
Solid Beauty, beside iPad mini, this is the only tablet I seen the outer beauty design on it.
Extremely slim with great on hand feeling, thanks to it back surface.
Gorgeous screen output! Great Viewing Angle, Sharp & Vivid Color.
Nice speaker output after enable S-Force Front Surround 3D, or else I find it quite high pitch and noise if not enable the S-Force Surround 3D.
After upgrade to latest firmware, it perform smoothly and no more touch sensitive issue.
Comparing with my previous Nexus 10:
Nexus 10 is much sharpen thanks to it much higher 2600x1600 300DPI panel, but ....... Nexus 10 color is too warmer and yellowish, unlike Xperia Tablet Z, I truly love it nice color reproduction and deep black.
Nexus 10 speaker is much strong, deep and loud, Nexus 10 still win even after enable S-Force Surround 3D for Xperia Tablet Z.
Google Chrome is my all time favor, but I can't really use it under Nexus 10 due to it abnormal behavior and often stuck, hang. Google Chrome had no issue and perform smooth in Xperia Tablet Z. I am happy with this.
Xperia Tablet Z camera is not the best, but it still perform not bad and better than Nexus 10 anytime. Just I find again's Sony over post processing, the photo output a bit waxing look.
Sample Indoor Photos taken with Sony Xperia Tablet Z: (100% no edit)
Add on review:
Tablet Z is crazy cool! No heating issue at all.
Tablet Z confirm browsing internet far faster than Nexus 10 as today I just meet up my friend where I sold my Nexus 10 to him, we together connect same WiFi hotspot, same using chrome and browse same website with constant count 1,2,3 click go. All site is loaded faster in Tablet Z.
Also benchmark show much faster, I know Nexus 10 is much higher resolution, don't count on that, Tablet Z still perform faster.

the pictures you took with your XTZ is that using the 7 Megapixel setting? I can never seem to get my pictures so crisp

Use manual and hand steady, during manual it will switch to 8MP.

How about the performance? My Nexus 10 is so smooth, except the crap Google Chrome (I use Boat or Ocean browser).

wifi
And what about the wifi speed? Because i read the performance of xperia tablet z wifi is poor, especially if the range between the router and tablet is above 6 meters. Is -it true? Can you test -it?
Browsing speed is better then nexus 10?
Thanks

I'm currently typing this on the XTZ and I can tell you that everything you've heard about the Wi-Fi is absolutely true. It works well when there's a strong signal but when the signal starts to get weak the tablet has a hard time holding on to the signal. I hope the next update will fix this issue.

Strange, dudes.
I'm here on a clinic with some guys, and in places where they get no WiFi with their iPhones, I have perfectly stable connection.
No WiFi problems so far.

I haven't noticed wifi performance issues, but I do notice the indicator drops off from one room to the next. (about 7-12M differences)

i haven't noticed any performance issues over WiFi with my XTZ and i have used it in different places around my house and even in my garage where the WiFi signal is very weak and still get signal and am able to browse the web or play store etc even transferring files over WiFi network works really well.

I find Chrome to be stuttery, not smooth. I use dolphin which is great. Even on my HTC One I dont use chrome (I use the stock browser) as I find it very stuttery.
In terms of battery you can easily get 5 hours of gaming time on it. About 6/7 hours of watching video (streaming from pc) and browsing. Some say you can get 10 hours of video. I've not come anywhere close to that. Standby time is quite good. I charge my tablet 2/3 times a week and on weekdays i use it abou 1.5-2 hours per night. And weekends I use it a bit more.

I've had 2 of these. The first one had an issue with the headphone jack flap. So returned it. That i had some issues with the wifi. It drops every now and the.
With the replacement, not had issues so far. Streaming vids from pc seems fine, even full hd vids.

I think when I first got my tablet I started using chrome but had the same problems as everyone else with the stuttering, I use Firefox now and it works great.
As for the battery life its not amazing but for its capacity id say it does an excellent job, I havent really ran it flat out so cudnt say how long it lasts but I surf the web a lot and watch a lot of anime and tv shows on my XTZ and hardly seems like the battery goes down I think what drains it the most is having the brightness set really high.
Ive only had a brief experience with the nexus 10 as a friend has one so cant really offer a comparison sorry.

I own Nexus 10 before, I can guarantee tell you Nexus 10 having weak WiFi, even Nexus 10 bigger capacity battery but not means it last longer, A15 processor is power hunger. Also Nexus 10 got stability issue, too yellowish screen and much heat temperature.
Xperia Tablet Z confirm no WiFi issue, stable, smooth performance, light, and cool temperature.
Now the only good and may not really count cool for Nexus 10 is the higher 2560x1600 resolution, others than that, for me, I am truly satisfied with Tablet Z than Nexus 10.

Thanks the experience to everyone. I afraid of only the bad WiFi performance, but I think I will choose this, not nexus 10.
Do you use sony dock to charging? Is it charge using the pins?
Has anyone try the official AOSP rom? (With aosp it can be like a nexus device )

The quality of camera seem very good.:good:

Once again! It is all about the router! My WiFi is as stable as possible on XTZ with Netgear wnr3500 and static IP assigned. No problem at all with all devices I have. I don't work for Netgear, they didn't promise to deliver Porsche to my house. Not even a girl. Somehow some devices are very picky. Why? No idea.

For those that don't want to read all the reviews themselves I will try to add a non biased summary:
Build quality:
Most if not all reviews like the build quality and think it feels and looks like a premium device.
Water resistance works as advertised.
some drop tests where done (not on concrete) and it survived without a scratch.
Screen quality:
Reviewers like the way the screen looks but viewing angles could/should be better eg not as good as the competition, but better than previous Sony devices.
synthetic test done on 100% brightness paint a different picture, the screen doesn't perform as well as it's competition, although color accuracy is excellent.
1080p is nice especially for text but don't count on a spectacular difference with 720p
The reviews that mentioned sunlight readability liked it.
Battery:
Battery is generally regarded as good.
stamina mode works pretty good .
Speed:
Devices feels speedy, no hiccups or slowness.
Syntactic benchmarks find that is is faster than devices that uses the same SOC ergo very fast
Camera:
Some say it's good others say it's rubbish. My take is that it depends on your taste. It is a bit soft and doesn't have a high saturation, so some would say it looks natural while others would say it looks toned down. this is something that is fixable with PS or iPhoto. I'm curious about the performance with a 3rd party camera app.
Sound/ Call quality:
speaker is average and on high volume perhaps below average.,
call quality is average
sound via earplugs/headphone for music etc is good / excellent
Overall:
All reviews agree that this is the best Sony smartphone ever.
All reviews rate 4 to 5 stars or equivalent
Some reviews think it is the best smartphone currently on the market ( or at least you are able to order it) while others think that there are better phones or that it is best to wait for the new HTC/Samsung/LG etc.

thanks, Google translate works well for this page.
I think at the end of the day, all top Android phones from Sony, HTC and Samsung are great, some will be a bit better in some departments but no landslide differences. And it just boils downs to style.
Personally I can't stand the Samsung feel, design and UI I think it is very ugly. So unless they change something in that department I will never own a Samsung.
For the current generation I would buy the HTC one X+ as the Sony T wasn't up to snuff spec wise (although I like the looks of the Sony better).
So for this generation it is again between HTC and Sony. While I like the one x and loved the original desire ,I just like the Sony design better (including UI). On top of that Sony has very good opensource support so, like I said before, unless HTC bringings a fantastic never before seen phone to the table I will keep my pre-order even if the Z is not the phone to end all phones .
I guess that all mayor hardware innovation except for battery are done do its maximum.
There is no real need for 1080p so even higher denseness would be insane.
Most if not all people I know how have an S3/iPhone 4/5 etc are perfectly happy speed wise, so while it is nice that the Z is even faster, and by a big margin, is not overly useful.
Sound etc are all good and for facebook, email, web photos all high end phones are pretty good.
What we miss is true software/hardware innovation to make use of the constantly increasing raw cpu/gpu power. So stuff like background video streaming to HDTV (wireless HDMI).
A desktop mode like unbuntu phone, but again should be able to do that while still using your smartphone as a smartphone.
And of course we need better battery tech.
Can someone tell me how I go about using Google translate so I can read the above review on my mobile please??

On top of that Sony has very good opensource support so, like I said before, unless HTC bringings a fantastic never before seen phone to the table I will keep my pre-order even if the Z is not the phone to end all phones .

same here, s3 is my first smart phone, and will be last samsung device forever. Hate the UI hate the cheapness of the phone, pentile oled is garbage. Sony and HTC are the only choice left for me on android phones really, but HTC new phones seems to be missing microsd lately, which is a big problem for me. Already have 10 gigs of songs on my sd card in my S3. Why is Xperia T spec not up to snuff? Its the same as the NA model of S3 just with less ram which I find to be not an issue at all since I never go over 800 mb usage on my S3. It comes out late but that doesn't make it weak, if so then the S3 would consider low end and weak by now and it still being sold for 600+ (buyout) in Canada as a flagship phone.

Well in Europe it is relatively speaking weak h/w but will cost you only 370 euro. the original one x is 440, S3 is 465, one x+ is 535 all off contract.
So I think price wise it is a good deal but I still would pay an extra 70 for the one x

Just received my Xperia Z - Thinking of swapping it for the HTC One

Heya, I tried to put as much information in the title and although I could easily write a wall of text here I'll try and keep it short and sweet
I was wondering if this type of topic belonged in the Q&A section.. But I believe it is more of a general discussion topic rather than something which can be solved
Please note that I am not asking which is the better phone or trying to start another flame war.. I'm just going to list my thoughts and hope that some of you can share yours!
Baseline facts:
Sony Xperia Z - Unlimited data £26pm (LTE later this year)
HTC One - Unlimited data £28pm (LTE later this year)
So, I received my Xperia Z today and to be completely honest I am not blown away by it at all (Which is actually a first for me as every phone I have ever owned has astounded me in some fashion).
I decided on it due to the overall price and the screen size (bigger is better) thinking that both were evenly matched
Okay, strait to the point.. Here is what's bothering me:
The screen size - Comparing it to my Nexus 4 (With the onscreen buttons hidden) a 4.7" screen is almost identical to a 5" screen with on screen buttons.. So one of the advantages over the HTC One is null
As the HTC one has dedicated buttons
The look - Maybe it's because I had my heart set on the HTC one or maybe its because I fell in love with the curves of the Nexus 4 but.. This just looks like a slab (Covered in fingerprints)
The feel - The phone actually kinda feels sharp / awkward when I hold and use it in one hand
Rooting worries - I've always ended up rooting and flashed every every android phone I've owned.. But I've read some horror stories about losing features (DRM and Bravia Engine). I really don't want to lose these as they are one of the few "WOW" factors this phone has
This is one worry that I'm sure could easily be put to rest by someone here
Battery life - Granted, I have been playing with it for most of the afternoon but it's lost a hell of a lot of battery in a rather short space of time. I'm not usually one to moan about battery life as I routinely charge every night but I need my phone to last all day with mid-heavy use
Notification Lag - Strangely enough while using Google+ auto-backup / instant upload feature my nexus 4 is getting notifications much faster (Minutes) than my Xperia despite the fact that the Xperia is the one uploading (Thus not in deep-sleep). Is this something anyone else is experiencing?
Speaker position - In a word.. Annoying. I've covered it more times than I can count and I've only used it a few times
Internet Lag - It seems to take about 5 seconds to switch from "H" to "H+" and then to start sending / receiving data leaving me staring at a blank page for a while.. Could be an issue with my network but I'm just throwing this out there.
Finally just general factors such as less power (Poorer specs) to the HTC One.. Almost every review site I have seen claims the HTC One is just "Better", even the camera on the HTC One is "Better" according to most of them so the Xperia really falls short on every mark.
Now the reason I posted this here is because I want to hear the opinions of those who actually own an Xperia Z and to get your opinions.. I already know what answer I'd get if I posted this over in the HTC One forums
On a side note I got one of these packaged with my Xperia Z:

It's still sitting in the box along with my contract simcard, headphones, charger and screen protectors as I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them. Its a nice touch though and defiantly a plus point :victory:
I was planning on buying a bluetooth headset anyway, this one even has NFC and a much "higher-end" product than I would consider
Thanks to everyone who read this topic, I'm really not asking which one is "better" or trying to start any form of a flame war. I just want to know your opinions.. Would you switch? Why? Why not?
And please, please, please list out some positive features of the Xperia Z as I'm seriously disillusioned here
I'm talking about features, gimmicks, accessories, anything to make it standout!

- Screen size: Can't really say anything about it since I came from the Note, and compared to that, the XZ is "a lot" smaller (Depends how much a lot is for some people)
- The looks: Just a matter of ones opinion. For me the XZ is the best phone I've seen thus far.
- The feel: Yap it could have been better
- Rooting worries: Totally bs. You will lose the things you mentioned when you unlock your Bootloader, but you don't need to that for root. And by saving your TA partition before you unlock your BL for the first time you can always re-lock it to get BE2 etc back.
- Battery life: What can we expect from a 2300 mAh battery, for that "small" capacity it's actually quite good. (Removable would've made it even better) Since the new FW the battery life has gotten worse for most people I think.
- Notification Lag: ?? No clue
- Speaker position: I Guess I'm one of the few that it doesn't bother, I use my speaker like.... once per month? Why do people complain so much about it. Listening music through such things is already bs if you're a real music lover, the only thing I use it for is like my ringtone when I receive a call. But most of the times I'm not holding my phone in my hand when I'm receiving a call so I have no problem there.
- Internet Lag: Once again no clue there.
It's a good topic you made, purely based on your own opinion, but because of that reason I also wonder why you made it in the first place.
It doesn't really add anything since (like I said before) it's purely based on an opinion.
Edit:
P.S. I also wonder why they didn't put like a dedicated button for the camera on the XZ.
You can say because of the water resistance, but the phone already has 3 buttons on the side (vol +/-, power) so I wonder if a fourth one would've mattered that much.
I also wanted to buy a HTC One instead of my XZ. The main reason why I went to the XZ is because the XZ looks in my opinion ofcource more like a buisness phone. The reason why HTC One dropped away from my list is also because it doesn't have an equalizer for my taste. As for me, I don't have a facebook nor any other social media account, so the UI of the HTC wouldn't be any handy for me. Can't say anything about the batterylife of the One because I never actually used it longer than a few mins, but the XZ's batt life is really crap compared to my Arc's. But I've managed to get it all along with automatic app killer and closed alot of apps and dimmed the screen a bit. The specs are good enough to run everything smooth, we're not going to play crysis on it. Browsing is fantastic on this phone, never lagged on the websites I browse. The screen is simply amazing especially with the new firmware. The smallapps is really something I really got used to it, can't do without them anymore. Videos and pictures are for some not good enough, but for me it's brilliant. Just need to play with the settings of the camera and got the most amazing pictures ever. Walkman and other Sony dedicated apps are also good.
Don't get me wrong, I also like the HTC One, I just don't find the htc handy enough. The Htc sense it just nothing for me, just eats alot of memory. The speakers ofc beats the XZ's speaker, but that's something nothing to worry about. Just use the headset, nobody wants to listen to your music.
As for built quality, XZ feels very solid in the hand. Drop the htc and u get the screen in pieces because the glass is edge to edge. And the Htc doesnt feel really premium quality in my hand. It has something of a toyish feeling in the hand.
Just an advice, go test the HTC One out in a local store like I did. Compare them to eachother, and you'll see what I mean. However, it's still your opinion and taste to buy the better one you think of. They are both very good phones, and blast the hell out of samsungs plastic toys.
Edit: Just browsed at thr HTC One topic and I'm actually glad I've bought the Xperis Z. Build quality sucks they say. Screen cracked easy in pocket and camera screen cracked etc. The battery ain't wow either.

Yeah I don't use the speaker for playing music but if I hear a new song or find something funny / amazing on youtube I instantly want to share that with friends and family.. What's easier than just whipping out your phone?
Thanks for clearing up the root worries, I read a few horror stories and thought it may not be worth the hassle.
This is kind of a selfish topic as I only created it because I have less than 7 days to send it back if it isn't right for me. But hopefully with people sharing their thoughts / opinions like yourself this could help other people facing the same problems!

Thanks, I'll definitely try-out the HTC One instore. Who knows, it could feel worse to grip than the Xperia Z! I have been tweaking the camera and it's taking really nice shots even in poor light, I'll take it on some trips and see if the battery can keep up
I hadn't heard about the issues people have been having with the HTC One

Well that's just it.. All the review sites have given me plenty of reasons to switch to the HTC One, I really hate making any decision with only half the story..
As I know I'll regret it if I ended up with the wrong device for me
The screen size
i came from iphone and previously even smaller phone, so first impressions were like ''OMG 5 inches way too big'', after using during some couple days, it fits to me naturally. the weight balance and thickness make it less big it really does
The look
i am not degrading HTC, XZ is simply more beautiful, i agree with others, its one of most design smartphone ever seen
i had a Sony Ericsson W880i before, somehow it reminds me it has some similarity between these
i honestly dont understand why people find HTC One as brilliant design, it just look pretty normal, maybe its because of full alu
actually i prefer square design over curve's one. One has some curve in its shape.
The feel actually it could be as better as worse, square design does not give good hand grip
that is the other side of the coin
Rooting worries if you were willing to root, you should accep the fact of avoiding guarantee, why not? lemme explain, rooting it will be at your own risk, Sony wouldnt prevent you from further issues with root like bricking, bugs... if you brick ur phone for good, dont go crying to Sony, that why they make such decision about DRM
anyway be patient, some developers will fix it and find safe root instruction in order to save DRM (i think it s possible to save it even if phone was rooted)
Battery life on average, all latest smartphones on the market have pretty same battery life according their use of customers
an user who spend day and night on social network, notification, playing game, LTE network etc will drain battery dratiscally
battery life its a matter of use, define your needs in order to find good setting for
Speaker position yes it could be a trouble if you dont use earphones for listening music as exemple
it does not bother me at all since i m using SBH20, NFC and wireless speaker
Internet Lag i didnt get any lag on internet, everything is fine
final advice for you if you focus on aesthetic and design, definitely XZ is for you, otherwhise HTC has its own interface Sense and i know many users like it
Trust me OP, switching to the HTC one would make you happier, the display alone is out of this world. The Xperia Z is a decent phone but I feel like it competes with last year`s phones like the Butterfly/DNA, LG optimus G and Galaxy S3. It doesn't not compare to the galaxy s 4, HTC one or LG optimus G pro in my opinion.

I don't think so that the battery life is crap. Yes it can be improved a bit like the HTC one gets 6-7 hours of on screen time with a marginally smaller battery than the Z..here's my result

Sigh, don't be a dink. Give it a rest.
OP, I've used both phones. Battery life is definitely better on the HTC, but it's nothing special. I would get an extra 15-20 minutes out of the HTC. As much as I love the design and build materials of the HTC One, I had some pretty severe gaps all over the phone. A buddy of mine has one as well and his isn't much better. The camera on the HTC is great in low light, but leaves a bit to be desired in good lighting conditions, which is where I take the majority of my photos.
I love the feel of the Xperia Z. As nice as the HTC One feels, I think the XZ is the better built phone. I worry about the glass back on the XZ but I think it's sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of day to day life. There isn't much the Z does a lot better than the One (except water resistance and arguably camera), but for some reason I like it a lot more than the HTC.

If you can ignore the bad camera and build quality of HTC One why not?
And I can get 6 hours of screentime at %40 brightness.

Sorry but camera fails at photos taken at broad daylight and panoramas vistas etc. 4mp doesnt cut it I have seen it with my own eyes. It may be good at low light but fails at outside photos.
And HTC One has very bad manufacturing. Just read how much problems the buyers have.
BTW I was a HTC phone user before. Not biased or anything. I was considering buying HTC One too. Now I am glad I didnt.
since I bought my Xperia z i have been considering this. I had a chance the other day to go for the HTC but I thought leave it.
I have had a play in store with the one.nothing initially impressed me about it, the screen was great but the Xperia screen is good too and bigger. I don't really like sense either. I couldn't gauge the sound quality due to the noisy environment but I guess that and the camera are the killer points. that's the only two things that would make me switch.
say what you want about the megapixels but I've saw some shots from the HTC one and they look great. the main thing is the quick shutter speed and brilliant low light performance.the Xperia z shutter speed is average at best and low light performance abysmal on the latest Rom.
the speakers on the Xperia z could be better and I always like good sounds quality on my devices.
but then you have to look at it from the other side too. build quality on the z is great, there's been many complaints about the HTC one build quality. when you have a phone for 2 years the build quality needs to be top notch. I guess most devices should be okay but when you hear the stories about gaps you do get slightly put off.
also the Xperia z is waterproof which could save the phones life some day and the stamina mode does help battery life quite a bit plus the rgb notification led is a lot better on the Sony.
as somEone said previously battery life is currently around the same for the top phones just look at the users posts about the phone you'll find out. design is personal preference.
you get used to each phone in the end tbh, they all have things that stand out for them. personally I can live with the sound quality but they need to improve shutter speed and low light performance I'm still on.434 and I might keep it that way.
Well, if I agree that HTC is a better phone than Z in term of hardware but not by much. I also had a dilemma when choosing Z or One but ended up choosing Z as I think it has better design and much cheaper in my country
Screen: Screen is definitely better on One but Z's screen with BE2 when viewing movie is better in my opinion. I really don't care about viewing angle and it isn't as bad on Z as I thought before (maybe my unit got good viewing angle).
Speaker: Yeah, nowhere near boomsound on HTC but it is loud enough. I can use it to view Youtube with my friend with audible audio.
Speed: Sense 5 is fast as hell, I would say that it is the fastest phone on the market right now, it is even faster than Galaxy S4. But most regular users don't really need it, XZ is plenty fast enough
Feel: I don't like the feel of One, although it is thicker than Z on white paper, the edge thickness is only half of Z's which make holding feel weird. Moreover, the buttons on One is the worst I have ever used. The power button is hard to press as it is so flat and place on top of such a big phone like One, volume rockers are also flat as well.
Battery life: I guess it is slightly better than Z. Maybe you will got 1 hour more of screen time.
my workmate has just got the HTC one and is having major problems with it, honestly really glad i've got the xz.

Switching from Note 2 to Xperia Z

Hi There,
Just received an Xperia Z 16gb white as a gift. I currently have the Note 2, no complaints. What would be the pros and cons of switching to the XZ?
I use my note a lot as a web browser, media player, etc. so I like the big screen. and I carry an extra battery so I don't have to worry about power, etc.
I like the 13mp camera on the XZ. What else am I gaining with the XZ if I switch?
Any comments and opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Maybe a slight upgrade. (CPU and Camera)
but, Xperia Z is slightly smaller screen too, and you can't replace the battery.
As long as the battery isn't an issue for you (note 2 has a waaay better battery than Z) then i think it's just pros for the Z. Maybe slightly smaller screen, nit as vivid as note 2 if you like that, personal taste Z looks better

Hey,
I just made the switch last week.
So far, cons:
Sucky battery life
small screen makes typing more difficult
screen with default screen protection isn't as smooth as GNII glass: makes typing with flow more difficult
gets hot while playing games and charging (weird since the GNII has a 2A charger, but is much cooler)
back glass makes me nervous about putting it on rough surfaces (solved if you buy a case)
the volume buttons are hard to reach on lower right side
you need to press the power button to turn the screen on --> annoying, since the button is on the sides. On the GNII you could just press the Home button and voila
speaker positioning is on lower right corner of the device, quite easy to cover with palm
ergonomics: it's weird how it's difficult for me to operate this device with one hand. It's like i'm having the same problems with the GNII, but on a much smaller screen
Pros:
It's water resistant
it's smaller
it looks better
it's faster
the screen resolution is incredible, 1080p on a 5 incher is damn nice: i can cram more readable words in this screen than with the GNII's screen
takes beautiful pictures, also more mature software for the camera in my opinion. HDR is a bit dodgy though, samsung still wins for that. ( Couldn't get proper HDR pictures in "classic HDR situations")
Haven't changed service provider, but I find that my XZ's network performance is better than my GNII. (Vodafone AU)
Better sound output? this is just what I feel, haven't read any reviews about this, but IMO the sound output on the sony is much better --> EQ is also much more solid
weak flash, BUT the glass covering it is grained --> softer light (nice touch, sony)
Already on 4.2.2 on the XZ. I could root my note but ... meh
I like the position of the micro usb port. this way when i listen to music while charging i don't have a cable protruding from the top AND bottom of the device like the GNII
Just my thoughts
Great review. Exactly what I was looking for.
What did you do about the battery situation?
Is it horrible removing the flap every time to charge the xz?
So you think the HD screen on the xz is far superior to the bigger screen on the note 2. Things like watching HD trailers, Netflix, movies etc.
Would you switch back to the note 2 if you could?
I'm thinking of switching because of 4.2 and the water proof capabilities
Thanks

Well, I haven't done anything with the battery so far. I don't want to root it just yet, haven't read up much about how to unroot it and keep warranty. It came with 4.1.2 branded from Telstra (a carrier in Australia), and I flashed a Nordic stock ROM on it, to get 4.2.2. I can keep my warranty this way and get the fastest updates from Sony.
In my opinion the battery has gotten a little bit better, despite people arguing about this on XDA. Some say it's gotten worse. So, I'd let it sink for a few weeks and wait for some of the pro reviewers to come with real benchmarks.
The flaps aren't as bad as some would say. It does get annoying, but I don't mind doing that to keep it waterproof. It's a bit like having a bulky case on any other phone and needing to remove the casing before you charge. Not too bad IMO.
The screen is FAR superior in terms of resolution, I am enjoying THAT aspect of it. BUT. Contrast is so much worse compared to the GNII (remember that the GNII is on AMOLED, so the blacks are "perfect" blacks), and it gives this sort of greyishness to the XZ that you never saw on the GNII. On the other hands, colors are much more vivid and "real", probably due the TFT LCD screen and BRAVIA engine. Viewing angles are worse, as mentioned on many reviews, but I take that as an advantage, I don't like people peeking into my phone
On the other hand, apps don't seem to support this 1080p resolution properly. The sony stock apps are doing okay, but all the google apps could use some optimisation:

Gmail on GNII
Google+ on XZ
Google+ on GNII
Settings in XZ
Settings in GNII
Notice how in the settings page, both devices show 9 Items in one "page", but how on Google+ and Gmail, the XZ shows less items. I imagine it's a difficult fix on Google plus, due to the cards UI, but there's definitely room for improvement in Gmail.
Play Books on XZ
Play Books on GNII
These were set at the smallest font on both devices in which I felt like the text was still "sharp" I.E if I set the font any smaller on both devices the words would have been fuzzy (of course you can't tell on these images on your computer because your computer has a set resolution which can't match these devices) . Notice how the XZ can offer more "words" per page than the GNII. If anybody wants to compare this is Infinite Jest by D F Wallace. On the XZ the Font size was at 63% using Google Play Books, and on the GNII it was at 75. I even went with the safe option of 63% on the XZ. It could have gone to 50% and still be sharp, but let's not push it
I still have my GNII so I still have the option of going back. I haven't made my decision
Cheers
Know this is only preference and will be diff for anybody so dont take as a insult but for me it would be the sony hands down because i cant stomache touch wiz the only way ive ever been able to use samsung phones is to root,i have a s4 and im selling it for the experia z but before rooting i couldnt use as a daily driver because the ui and lag wich was both fixed by rooting but a high end phone with specs like that should be smooth out of the box like my htc one is, now i cant speak on sony yet because its not in the states for 10 more days
Thanks for your insight. I was going to sell the Xperia z. I'm going to put up both for sale, and keep the phone that didn't get sold first.
I can carry an extra battery supply if the phone runs out. Not as convenient as a spare battery.

Not horrible removing the flap. I try not to even close it all the time so it doesn't get used to much because I can't imagine it will keep the same water tightness when it gets open up all the time. But I use the dock station to charge so meaning I don't barely use the flap in the first place. And to listen to music I use a Bluetooth Stereo headset. I try to avoid open those flaps as less as possible.

If you have your Z rooted, you can go and edit the build.prop to have the lcd density changed.
You could end up with more actual working space like this:

Yes, I knew about that one beforehand. Just didn't remember that I don't have a recovery installed at the moment, otherwise I'd have been able to fix from that. Don't have admin rights on the computers at work and unfortunately didn't bring my laptop today so I have to go phoneless for a little while hehe.
The note 2 gout sold first. Do I'm keeping the xz. Should be interesting.
When I power off the xz, it makes a weird noise like some mechanism is shutting down. Is that normal?

Considering the Nexus 4 - What are its major flaws?

I currently have a Nexus S which I have had for 2 years now. I'm considering the Nexus 4, was going for the S4 but this is half the price, and the iPhone 6 would be too far out and the iOS would not be to my liking.
I know I cannot really go wrong with the Nexus 4 - it's loved by every reviewer, and not because of its price - the price is only a bonus.
What are its major flaws? I have a few things I was curious about:
- Screen touch sensitivity/fluidity. When your finger touches/swipes on the screen, does it behave like an iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S3/4/Note II devices? I personally like the sensitivity to your finger from the iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy devices. I don't have this in my current Nexus S but definitely would like it in my next phone.
- Battery life. Can it last 14-16 hours, with let's say, 2-3 hours of screen time or so?
- Camera. I've seen some sample pictures, was not too impressed, but as long as it's decent I'm fine.
- Headphone output? I heard the headphone output is lower than other devices from a video. Not sure if significant.
That's all for now. :good:
Just wait for the Nexus 5. Only 3-4 months away.
Tbh I've considered that, but it'll be announced in October, released in December, and if I want it with my carrier it'll probably hit in perhaps March/April of 2014, unless I choose to buy it from the Play Store.
I also heard it packs in a lot, and I think Google's going to price it high this time around. Either way, my current carrier is offering the N4 16GB for only $300 outright. So its price seems lower than market value, and it for some reason is hard for me to wait.
I upgraded from by Galaxy S (Same as the Nexus S) in Feb.
- Screen touch sensitivity/fluidity. I would say the same, hard to notice the difference.
- Battery life. 5+ hrs on screen time with WiFi on (I dont have data so thats not in use). It was a definate improvement from Galaxy S.
- Camera. There is a mod floating around that allows you to get better quality pictures at the cost of a larger file size.
- Sound. NOTHING beat Galaxy S's sound chip. I was disappointed a bit here.
- Overall animation/fluidity/framerate. Stock android on N4, even the most overclocked Galaxy S with the most slimmed rom cannot come close to these speeds.
- Size. I like smaller phones that fit into my pocket easier. Galaxy S wins here but thats a personal choice. HD videos play exactly to scale on the N4, you just feel immersed.
- Physical features. You can't drop it, glass on both sides, bumpers/cases probably won't do anything. It's also heavier. No removable battery or SD card. I made the mistake of getting the 8GB, dont. Doesn't feel plasticky/cheap like the Galaxy S.
ROM support is very nice here, I think it's just as good as when Galaxy S was in it's prime.
You have to get it, try getting it through your provider ($300 in canada for the 16Gb via koodo whereas $366 shipped from goolge for the 8Gb)

Buying from Play Store is better anyway, at least for T Mobile USA.
What can the Nexus 4 do that your Nexus S can't? The Nexus 5 will be even better than the Nexus 4 on all scales. It is rumored to be based off the LG G2 which will have stereo speakers, bigger screen, improved camera, and much more. Maybe even launched with Key Lime Pie(?)
Just wait for it.

i had a nexus s for long time, loved that thing. yes, it does have great sound, especially with voodoo, but the nexus s is merely a childs toy compared to the nexus 4. heck, the galaxy nexus was a large step from the nexus s. you will love the nexus 4. coming from two samsung phones in a row(ns and gnex), i first thought that not having a plastic back was the nexus 4s' major flaw, but now i dont mind
oh, and some photos, all hdr mode..

Touch sensitivity is quite good for an android device similar to the nexus s, but the nexus 4 has lower touch sensitivity than it is capable of because of the touchscreen drivers, this problem has supposedly been fixed in the upcoming android 4.3 update but honestly touch response is very good you won't have a problem.
As for battery expect 4-5 hours sot on WiFi and 3-4 hours on 3g.
Photos in good lighting conditions are quite good but in low light its another story so if you take pictures in good light you'll be okay.
I find the sound output to be fairly reasonable its quite loud I don't think you'll have a problem with it unless you need to drive something huge with a high impedance, for normal headphones/earphones its loud enough.

Gets extremely hot when gaming. I'm not sure whether this causes damage, but it makes me sweat on the device.
Both 3G and Wifi have connection issues. This may be fixed in software, but I'm not sure.
Speaker sound isn't as good as some other phones.
Being totally flat, it sits flush on a surface and the speaker is covered, muting notification sounds.
Being made of glass, there's twice as much breakable surface.
I upgraded my Nexus S for the N4 about the time it launched, so I know how slow it must be getting.
While its not perfect, I wouldn't trade it for anything on the market. It's a nexus device, which has the major benefit of being the first to be updated and having more stable ROMs, which you will miss from other devices.
The battery is not as good as I would have hoped for, but it will get me through the day as long as I'm not using it constantly. With mobile data on, I can get 2 hours of SOT (Screen on Time) if I wasn't playing games.
On the topic of the screen, I can tell you that the stock color calibration is extremely washed out. It's a good screen, they just botched the calibration. I remember looking at it for the first time and being really disappointed because of the faded look of colors like blue. This is something that is easily fixed by a non-stock kernel like Franco's Kernel, which is the one I use. The calibration I have right now looks amazing.
While the headphone output is quiet by the standards of most phones, I don't notice it unless I plug it into something like external speakers, or my car.
Also, it's probably worth noting that the 4.3 update that was leaked yesterday is supposed to drastically improve touch sensitivity.
and I would probably wait until at least the 24th of July on the off chance that Google announces lower pricing or a higher capacity version.
Touch Pretty darn smooth. Without a screen protector that is. But even with a sp you'll be able to swipe like no other. Response is top notch and definitely on par with new released phones. (Just my opinion)
Battery If you're a heavy user the battery might slack. If you're an addict, don't get this phone lol. But if you're able to balance data / running apps / screen time / etc. this phone will be perfect. (Choose the right rom & kernel, or just stay stock with a nice kernel)
Camera I don't use it that much but its alright, not the best out there. If you're some fancy photographer I doubt you'll be satisfied. But still takes pretty nice pictures as long as you take it right
Headphone I literally listen to music all day if I'm out of my house. No doubt the output is nice and clear, but it all depends on what type of headphones you're using.
This phone isn't a super computer. It lags when it needs to and produces slight flaws as you use it. But then again, what electronic doesn't
In the end, it all depends on the user's preferences. But if anything, I'd recommend waiting for the N5.
One of the most annoying things about the N4 is undoubtedly the fact that notifications etc cannot be heard when the phone lies flat with the screen up. Many calls have been missed due to this fact...

When I touch in one spot it reacts like I hit another location.
I have to say, it is SLIPPY. It slips off everthing, even when i think its a flat surface!

Do u run custom Roms/kernels on the nexus s?
If you want the same experience x100 then the nexus 4 is for u.
I went from a nexus s to a nexus 4 and I'm more than happy. Android + iOS smoothness.
Flaws:
The touchscreen unresponsiveness is not major (very soft touches don't register sometimes) and it is remedied with either a custom kernel in 4.2.2 or with the upcoming 4.3 (new touchscreen driver).
Screen colors are a bit washed, but with the same solutions as above screen is beautiful.
The phone is made of glass, so it is not as resilient to falls as the nexus s.
Some people experience notification delays on specific WiFi routers. Never had such problem myself.
The phone tends to get hot when in mobile network or under heavy use (because its glass). Can be solved with custom kernels, undervolting/underclocking (this is the most tweakable phone ever).
No issues with audio.
Camera is good. Not the best, but acceptable quality.
Battery life is typically between 4 to 6 hours screen on time, on WiFi, which is pretty good in my opinion.
P.s. this phone offers the smoothest android experience from every other phone I put my hands on.

My brief first impressions

Got my device yesterday, played with it most of the day. Overall very impressed!
Build quality feels good, got around 7hrs screen on time out of the first charge with variety of browsing, music, app installing etc etc Screen is very good with punchy contrast (much better than my Nexus 4) Loud speaker is plenty loud enough (again, louder than Nexus 4 IMO), vibration is strong so no missed notifications when silent. Only made one call on it so far, quality seemed fine, and no complaints on the other end about not being able to hear me clearly. Performance is great as expected, no slow downs when browsing and such.
There are plenty of reviews on the camera over in the Z1 section, so without repeating what's already been said: avoid the "superior auto" mode and spend a few seconds configuring the manual mode for the shot you want to take, and you get some great results. The superior mode seems to suffer particularly badly in poor light as it drives the ISO up sky high and produces horrible grainy photos.
Only negative comment I have is the screen protection, or lack-thereof. The screen its self is "scratch resistant" but there is a cheapy plastic film on top which I grazed within minutes, I'm told this can't be replaced or removed without losing the warranty. Sony do include a screen protector of sort that you can apply on top of this in the box, unfortunately its one of the god-awful 10 for £2 type plastic things. I'd suggest buyers budget an extra £20 for a good quality film or tempered glass protector to go on top. This is for me the biggest disappointment with this phone; having had my Nexus 4 "naked" most of its life, and suffering no damage, I'm very frustrated that my new £450 phone has to be covered with a cheapy plastic sheet to protect the screen - not good.
Any questions fire away and I'll do my best to answer.

LED notification is nice and bright, I've set up "light flow lite" to customize the colours / blink rate etc and all is well. I've tried to take a quick photo here, but it doesn't really do it justice. (excuse the terrible screen protector fitting, I threw it on in a bit of a huff. Waiting on a better one to arrive)

It has to. It's much more narrow and the screen is definitely smaller.
Thank you for your insightful input! One thing so important to me is screen and software responsiveness and fluidity...and you're the perfect person to tell me how fluid it feels compared to the nexus 4 and I will be eagerly waiting your response!
---------- Post added at 04:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------
how is the charging time? is it quick charge enabled?
Hi, can you also please put the z1 compact on the top of your nexus? It makes me easier to recognize the size difference
Answers to a few questions:
Charge time from almost flat seemed to be in the region of 2.5 hours, which is pretty good by my reckoning.
It feels a lot smaller than it looks. The reduction in width makes the most difference, and after 2 days using the Z1c the Nexus 4 feels chunky to me now. I don't have my Nexus to hand for size comparison photo now I'm afraid, but laying the Xperia over the top of the Nexus 4 allows you to see 2-3mm on all 4 sides. Next to no difference in weight, through the Sony feels more dense/solid to me - Gives a premium feel.
The phone operation is very fluid and smooth, I went through numerous custom roms and kernels on the Nexus 4 to get the kind of smoothness that the xperia offers right out of the box. Launching the camera app is very quick: Maybe 2 seconds from sleep (via the shortcut button), and near instant from the menu shortcut. Shot-to-shot time is very impressive too - This is one thing where the N4 was always poor in my opinion.
I haven't missed the screen size at all, others may I guess, but personally I prefer being able to operate the whole screen comfortably with one hand!
Thanks great to know the xperia ui doesn't slow the experience
Headphone sound quality
Hi Guys,
Some more feedback on my experiences with the phone.
I'm noticing improved WiFi reception compared to my Nexus 4, My desk in the office is a bit of a black spot normally. My laptop frequently disconnects from the wireless, the Nexus hardly ever managed to connect, the Z1c seems to obtain a connection here and I'm streaming music over it without dropouts :victory:
On a related note, The sound quality through the headphones is very good too. I'm using Logitech Ultimate ears 200, previously had fauxsound on the Nexus 4 for improved volume, and whilst this did allow my N4 to go louder than the Z1c does, the sound quality is definitely better here, stereo separation in particular seems to be better.
Mine arrived in the mail this morning, and I'm impressed so far
Still setting it up mind, but it's the perfect size for my hands (pretty much the same size as an iPhone 5 with a case on)
In comparison with my current Android phone (HTC One X), although in physical size it's only a little smaller to look at, it feels much smaller in the hand, and more usable (no over-stretching of the thumb, reaching for the on button, etc...)
And as for the responsiveness, it's genuinely on par with the iPhone 5 too!
I'm glad I took the gamble to pre-order! :good:
(Just need to set-up the SmartWatch that came with it next...)
Any impression about the ringer volume? I've got a Z, and I had to use a mod (replaced the Fusion3 file) in order not to lose notifications and calls.
quite surprised to see they did not include headphones.. I guess they gotta sell some bluetooth headsets..
Initial impressions coming from an Samsung Galaxy S2 with kitkat.. I miss the settings button And don't understand why they could not put the buttons on the empty field below the screen instead of using the screen .. :\
Laying the Z1c on top of my sgs2 is pretty much same size.. although the Z1c is a little thicker than the SGS2

if you care about audio quality, you'll already own decent headphones/iems and have absolutely zero use for any included iems which would stay wrapped up and un-used and be a waste of sony's dosh. much rather sony spent the money they will save by not bundling cheapo iems on a phones build quality etc
Mine from O2 came with earphones And surprisingly they are actually quite good but the rubber buds slide out the my ears.

I don't own a Z1 compact (yet) but I had two Nexus 5 devices - both sent back to get a refund because Nexus 5 has some serious issues with its microphone. The audio recording is terrible during video footage and a lot of users complain about crappy quality during phonecalls (on the receiving end).

First impressions too
To share my first impressions: I received mine yesterday, and I spent the afternoon playing setting up the phone .
The size and weight are about the same as my previous phone (a HTC sensation).it fits well in my hand and well in my pocket too.
The built seem of quality, the flap are easy enough to manoeuver (and allow to plug cable easily), and seems built to last. Overall it gives an impression of quality. I don’t have any issue with the plastic protection screen.
On the software side, everything run fast, and smooth. I have been really impressed by the 4G: it seems merely as fast as at home. All the connections are running well (no issue with gsm, wifi, Bluetooth, nfc). Phone calls are clear, and the micro works greatly according to the “test” I made.
The only drawbacks I found are linked with my experience on my previous phones, and are softwares linked (it might be possible to solve them, but I have search yet to do so): I found the keys of the keyboard to be a bit too small; The intelligent dialer is not as good as I wish (start to look in the phone number before looking at name); I am missing the HTC clock which was also indicating the weather.
If you have any question, feel free!
Franck
