[Q] S Voice doesn't wake up the phone from sleep - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, just got my S4. Excited about the features and the new S Voice. It tells me it can wake up the phone by voice command which is like totally awesome. You know like in Star Trek they always call the computer to do some stuff for them haha. So I wanted to do the same but it seems you first have to click the home button and then unlock by voice. So it's more like Unlock by voice rather than Wake-up by voice.
Is it possible to make the phone actually waking up by voice without having to touch the home button first?

Streak while using phone annoyances

When I call my voicemail [using google voice] it wants me to enter my pin.
1. Isn't there a way to program the dialer to pause, then enter the pin automatically?
2. I notice that the phone acts very quirky when on a call. In order to do anything when on a call I have to turn it so that it is in portrait mode, not landscape because it sort of 'sleeps' once I am on a call.
3. Being the phone wants to sleep when I am on a call, I can't seem to find a way to get back to the phone app and hit the RED 'end' button at times ..
Sort of hard to explain but maybe someone can do a better job if you have found the same problem. I love this BIG phone. I wouldn't even object to an extended battery.

Don't know about point 1 but i have just read that when making a phone call it has to be in portrait mode and as you bring it up to your face the proximity sensors will turn off your display to prevent unintentional touches is that what you were on about or have i got it all wrong
I don't understand all the technical stuff but to hold it, it has to be in portrait mode, but even if you have the speaker on and it is on it's back on the table, you can't press the keypad [once the call has begun] unless it is in portrait mode. I would like to turn off 'sleep' while I am on a call .. REALLY annoying.
SUGGESTION: Don't make any prank calls until you know that phone inside and out because sometimes hanging up the phone is close to impossible. Unless it's just me.

AHHHH so its you makeing all the prank calls to me LOL.
It dosen't say anything in the manual on turning off the sleep i will do a google and have a look
sssshhhh ... don't tell .. I have lots more calls to make
But seriously .. I called to check my voice mail and somehow the dialpad went off the screen .. Tried pushing buttons, but there apparently isn't one that will bring it back up .. Mean while I hear the recording saying the same "enter your 4 digit pin over and over." I would if I could find the dial pad again !!! Same if you are leaving a message .. if the screen sleeps, you are fumbling around trying to get it to come back up to click END.
Yes i have had quite some issues with it as a phone, specially when it rings but the screen is still in sleep mode for some reason. So you have to turn it on from sleep then hit the unlock before answering. This is a long process to accept phone calls, also when you answer the phone my ears always seem to hit the screen which triggers the apps menu....
I have had it since launch day and been trying to use it as a primary phone but i don't think thats working out. But as an MID its amazing I love using it, the screen is nice and great using it a a ebook reader.
When I get a phone call my screen comes on, unlocked and ready to answer.
My slight issues are my face is too small to go from the ear piece to the mic LoL
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I too am having the same issues as many on here.
A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G is what it is!
I can;t even hear anything out of the earpiece in the phone, although i can if i turn it on speaker...not a happy bunny as now i have to wait for a replacement!
One question tho, which has been driving me insane...
Does anyone know if there is some kind of 'file-explorer' for accessing the conent on the SD card?
The only way i've found so far to even get close to the files is through 'QuickOffice'... Would've thought they'd be a more 'convenient' approach to it...
Any ideas?
Yesterday I purchased a program called 'screeb.' It is supposed to be able to prevent 'sleep' when you are actually still using it among other things like battery saving things .. I haven't tested it yet but maybe others have ??

There are several free file explorers in the Market .. As for sound.. are you sure you are putting the right end to your ear ?? Seriously .. It would be easy to make that mistake when everything is dark ..

Yeah, definetly got it at the right ear
Will have a look round for a file explorer then, i just thought it would have came with one...silly me! lol!
If I had the phone on speaker and put it to my ear it would deafen me I think. Speaker is VERY loud. Could it be that you have the TTY feature turned on? [ I think that is what it is called, not even sure what it does.] I just can't understand why it won't work as a phone.
I have been trying to use BT only when using it as a phone. I am very afraid my earrings are going to scratch the screen.
I was trying to decide if maybe I should put the sim from my streak back into my iphone and then move the sim from my HTC Shift into the Streak until I got more used to using it. Especially if I am going to use it a lot for voice. I also use my phone for data more than voice.
ALSO .. wondering what an extended battery would be like .. Make it harder to hold? or give you something to hold on to... Right now my hand has to really stretch to grasp the phone ..
ANYWAY ... enough with all this thinking .. I should have been at work 15 minutes ago and I haven't even gotten in the shower.

I love British expressions ... Lately I notice that people in the USA are using them more and more .. The one that annoys me the most .. BECAUSE IT IS NOT OURS TO USE is the expression "gone missing." Everyone who is missing has "gone missing" and until about 1 or 2 years ago it belonged to YOU ... What I am trying to say is I like when YOU use them, but when WE do it sounds WRONG.

Your voice mail issue should be fixed by downloading the tmobile visiual voice mail its simple fast free. Also your sleep issues should be fixed with 2.2. I know with my N1 when I move the down it turns on.

Try oi file manager on market. It'll do what you want.

I have everything with Tmobile but it won't let me install tmobile visual voice. Actually it says it is installed, but I can't activate it.
Just got off the phone with Tmobile and they turned on Visual Voice for me. Good. Next on the agenda is when a call ends getting back the dial pad so I can hang up ...

1. You can long press * on dialpad, it will show "p", then enter pin.
It can also be used in the contacts (just type p).
2. no idea...
3. Tried power on key ?
Maybe I throw my hands in the air to fast, but I shut off google voice and went back to tmobile 'visual voicemail.' It is sort of the same but I will miss google's voice to text translation via email SOOOOO MUCH ... It is probably the most entertaining application that I have ever had. I like to forward them to the person who left the voicemail and say "what?????"
It seems funny. But I can't use google voice here ;-(

[Q] Disable phone screen with BT headset

I was wondering if there is a way to disable phone's screen when voice dialing number or when answering phone call.
I've an BT headset on my motorcycle helmet, the phone is in my pocket while riding ; the problem is that the screen is activated with every incoming/outgoing phone call and the screen is inadvertently pressed executing silly actions.
I'm looking for a solution without having to install a permanent screen lock as in all day life, having to switch on the screen and then having to unlock it every time I want to use my phone is boring.
So has anybody a solution ‘cause I’ve written a beautiful note during my last hand ree call.
Hi,
In S2U2 app there is option in power settings where phone locks up at talking when using BT.
I guess that it works for you.

2 incredibly annoying android issues

first issue it's incredibly annoying when I am leaving a message on someone else's voicemail and they call me and I can't find a way to quickly hang up and switch to the other call. surely there is an option I am missing that allows you to hang up the call you're on an answer the other 1 but I end up hanging up on the person calling.
second I can't find a way to hang up the phone if I inadvertently switch from the phone to the home screen. is there a button that always hangs up the phone when you aren't on the phone dialer screen?
Notification, expand the current call one and there would be hang up.

When you get a call when you're already in one you can swipe to answer the incoming call. On the AOKP ROM there is a hangup button in the notification panel. If you're not running that ROM you can always just go back to the phone app then hang up.

HOW DO YOU HANG UP WHEN NOT ON THE DIALER SCREEN???
its like an adventure in frustration to accidently call someone and frantically try to navigate through multiple screens looking for the damn dialer screen so you can hit the red bar

how???? the only options avaliable are for the incoming call "answer/ignore/text"
if i answer..then the other call is on hold and i'm bouncing around through screens again looking to find a way to (a) switch calls..(b) hang up the old one...(c) take the other one off hold.
that is super unwieldy especially when you're like 'hello??? hello??' making sure the other person is still on the line and the proxmity sensor keeps cutting in and out while you're trying to look at the damn phone, listen for the other person..look to see if you've managed to switch over...hit more buttons...listen for the other person..make sure you hung up on the wrong person...and then look for the 'hold' button flag and turn that off.
check accessibility, power button to end calls for accidental calls

Go into settings, accessibility and check "Power button ends call". If you need more than that, you might have to write your own script, app, etc.
Just don't hit your power button when in a call you actually want to be in.

THANK YOU!!! :good:
going out of my mind on this one. its super embarrassing when you accidently call someone you were about to send a text to and say 'i'm not available' and they're on the line going 'hello? hello?' while i'm trying to figure out how to hang up on them without speaking.
the power button is better than nothing.
the 2 line management is atrocious.
i bet i call someone at least 2-3x a week and get their voicemail and as i'm leaving a message for them..they call back.
then i'm in android-phone-hell trying to do something that *SHOULD* be a no-brainer.
i can't be the only one this happens to all the time. if i'm in a car its even worse (yeah yeah dont use the phone while driving) because i'm about to swerve off the road trying to look down at the phone 15x to switch calls and hang up on the old one.
what usually happens is
A. i answer the other call and leave a 20 minute blank voicemail on the original line which google leaves politely open the whole time i'm on the other call.
B. hang up on the incoming call in my attempt to hang up the call i'm on and have to call the other person back again and hope they pick up. this is DEATH if you're waiting on a callback from a customer service person.
this is horrible design. i know i'm not the only this happens to all the time.

ok, this is a half-ass feature. it 'kind of' works but doing my experiment (on call with someone when new call comes in) the power button does freaking NOTHING. it doesn't try to hang up either call.
it only works if you are on a call and someone else isn't trying to call in.
*sigh*

Maybe it was Cyanogen or just older Android but I could have sworn there was a "Hangup and Answer" option. I used to use this all the time when I was calling someone and their voicemail picked up but they called me right back before I could leave a message, I would just tap that option and it would end the current call and answer the new one.
I agree though, it's weird but thanks for the notification window tip. I totally forgot about that option
I had this kind of problem.. I end up hanging up on both. I'll look again later but I think I know what you mean..

I tried the notification trick.. No love. You can't pull anything down while on a call unless maybe you're talking about a custom ROM.
Seems your phone is frozen when there is an incoming call. All you can do is answer text or ignore.

I'm missing that option. I recently bought a Sony XperiaZ and there was an option to "hang up and answer". I'm sure of it and was really appreciating it. But I didn't like the phone and just bought a Nexus 5. I'm on Cataclysm custom rom but I don't see anything like that to make our lives easier.

I haven't. I was thinking along the same lines though. Initially, I had the phone configured to unlock with a swipe. Then I disabled that too. Right now the phone as no security and no lock screen and it still won't wake the phone up.

I am fully stock right now, have not even rooted yet.
On my car stereo (and most other bluetooth devices) there is a button that initiates interaction with the phone. I call it a bluetooth press (the phone is already paired and connected to the bluetooth device). If I am logged into my phone and i press this button, my N4 brings up my default list of programs to make a voice call. However, if my phone is sleeping and I press this button the phone won't wake up. The goal here is to be able to use the N4 hands free with voice commands but if I have to press the power button and swipe to enter the phone, it kind of defeats the purpose.
I know Tasker plus autovoice plug-in will work here

Thanks for the lead. I checked it out it has alot of cool features but you are not able to set an event based on a bluetooth press to start autovoice when the phone is asleep.
I believe you can, that is where autovoice comes in I've seen some tutorials precisely about what you are trying to achieve.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
In the tutorials I have seen it shows the phone on and then responding to bluetooth. I have not seen any where it will wake up the phone. If you can point me to a tutorial where it does that I would be grateful.
It is just surprising to me in general how difficult it is to wake droids on bluetooth. I can't be the only guy who is trying to implement a hands free setup in my car.

All right, I've flashed stock and CarbonROM; and tested both.
It's working fine with my car - and it's an old car, with bluetooth 3.0/2.0, I believe. I paired my N4 with the car's media system. It has a separate display and mic, with separate buttons for call functions on both the steering wheel and the system.
I press the Up/Down buttons to browse my contacts on the car's display and when I press the call button, the phone's display switched on, and starts calling the person. No problems or lag.
Weird; maybe it's a car problem?

Geez, thanks for testing all of that. I am sorry to say though that my problem is different then what you are describing. I too can press the phone button on my stereo, bring up my contacts, select one and it will wake up the phone and call them. What I am trying to do is use the bluetooth press, similar to when you press the bluetooth button on a headset. I want that to wake up the phone so i can use voice options to place calls. Scrolling through my contacts on my stereo, while a working solution, is very distracting for me in terms of watching the road. The goal here is to press the bluetooth button, wake the phone and launch a voice based app like google now, or vlingo/dragon..etc so I can speak commands to call contacts, send texts etc.

Hahaha, darn - i didn't understand your problem then. Sorry!
I don't have a way to test that, but using Tasker sounds like a good method. Maybe these articles/links might help?
http://lifehacker.com/control-your-phone-using-your-voice-with-tasker-and-aut-514487972 - The second paragraph might help you with your problem?
Also, this app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joaomgcd.autovoice&hl=en
Hmmm - the first screenshot and the second review ( by Greg Resler ) seem to address your problem...
And, the Tasker help guide also seems to have a way to setup calling through Google Now voice search - http://tasker.dinglisch.net/userguide/en/help/ah_index.html. Look for the "Voice Command" heading.
Note - I don't have any affiliation with these apps/sites. I'm only using Google searches to get this info.

[Q] My Phone Keeps Beeping

I just recently bought my Note 4, and have to say it is the single best phone I have ever owned lol. I am still trying to learn about it. I mean it is Rooted and I do not even know what that means LOL
Anyways the reason I joined is because I need help. This has been happen off and on, my phone keeps beeping every time I shake my phone. I did not know you can shake the phone and even have it do anything (I need to really learn more about my phone haha). When I am out walking the beep drives me bonkers! It will even bleep during the start of a phone call. I recorded the sound and really hope that I can upload it.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide. I am sure it is just something simple, but I am not seeing it
Hi there,
A simple Google search brings me here:

Did you try turning off NFC to see if this causes the problem?
(This doesn't seem to happen on my handset when turned on btw.)
Else turn off Orientation Lock maybe?
(Seeing the fact you say it occurs more when you move or shake your handset.)
Question: Does the sound also play if the profile is on silent mode?
Kind regards, Stefan.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question
I came across that same thread when I was searching for answers before coming here. It did not find it relevant because my NFC is not on.
I was able to kind of see a screen before silly me accidentally hit the back button. I did not see the name of the app, but it was a white background with a picture of an orange mic and switch on the bottom in orange that says sonar. There was probably other things on the page but that is all I saw for the split second I saw the screen. Then it is after it started doing the beeping. When I look at my apps the only ones I have that have anything to do with my mic is S Voice, Voice Recorder and Voice Search, and not one of them are what I saw. The beeping I am hearing same kind of sound I would hear if I tap Voice Search, but that is not what is causing the beeps.
Hi again,
It does sound like the Voice Search beep, but it seems different.
You could try to disable double tap home for Svoice but I doubt if it would work:
Double tap the home button to*open S Voice.
Press the menu button in the top right of the app.
Tap “Settings.”Uncheck “Open via the home key.”
Did you check the screen orientation lock yet?
I assume you have rebooted your handset right?
Kind regards, Stefan.
We are becoming fast friends! LOL
Yes it does sound the voice search, and it does go away after I reboot my phone, I would just really like to know what this is though so I can try to prevent it from happening or turn it off when it does happen.
Again, thank you so much for caring enough to try and help me.
An other thing that ia worth mentioning is under:
Accessibility these is: direct acces.
When enabled it enables certain user set options by 3x pressing the home button.
But I could not find any option that enabled this beeping.
It could very well be a third party app causing it.
Anyways good luck, maybe anyone else has some input.
Kind regards, Stefan.
You might try safe mode to see if an app is causing it. It will temporarily disable all non-system apps. See if that fixes it. If so, it is an app you installed. m.androidcentral (I can't post links yet so change this to a '.') com/galaxy-note-4-safe-mode
