Am I the only one here not bothered by the "smearing issue"? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Even before Samsung (allegedly) fixed it, I really wasn't bothered by it.
Anyone here share the same sentiments?

Doesn't bother me the least. I thought it was kinda cool to be honest.

oh yeah, I made a poll to see how many of you share the same sentiments as me
please vote

Why do you need a poll ?
If your bothered by it... your bothered by it.
Why do you need to verify and validate your feelings with other people ?
So what if your alone in this feeling ?
So what if you have a group feeling this way ?
It is an issue for you and that is all that should matter as a paying customer.
On a more productive note smearing has been reduced significantly... but is not the 100% gone.
The issue appears to be software related as the S3 4.2 leak has also picked up smearing. That means the issue is apparently 100% fixable.

I preffered deep blacks in menus (pixels off) and didn't even notice smearing until i read about it on xda. Now i hate greyish black in menus and i was wondering is there a way to bring deep blacks back, with smearing or not

The smearing is only when scrolling, and I only see it on Feedly when I'm reading something in Night theme, so it doesn't bother me.
Videos are a joy to watch with great blacks, and I don't see any smearing there.

Ask that to facebook and why it keeps asking "what's on your mind".
This post is in compliance with the national potato safety regulation.

Personally, not fussed about the smearing. To be honest I didn't even notice it until I read about it on here.

Now that my battery life is incredibly awesome thanks to kg2/3, I really don't have anything to complain about.
The positives of this phone greatly out weigh the negatives which is only one thing I can think of.. Some of my wallpapers look ugly because of the banding.
I think I can live with that.
Its a minor issue and only noticed with some loading screens like angrgbirds and xda app and certain photos.
I just love how people turn a decent post into a threat like the nexus prime.
L a little research would have told you the nexus s had same issue and later fixed.

If you don't look for banding or yellow tint, you'll never notice them. Recommend for new users to not look for these issues
Nexus s had the issue fixed because of outcry. Meek sheep in here advise to fix the problem is to ignore it. Not cool at all.
And its not a minor issue. For those of us with eyes it is glaring. And don't tell me that with dual core at 1.2 and 24 bit the things will grind to a halt. I don't buy it.

What "banding" issue? Mine is fine.... I guess if I "look" for issues I will find them. Then again the positives far outweigh the negatives. A little gradient here and there is no matter. Some people are their own worst nightmare with their "anality" Probably have their devices wrapped in armor lest a little nick or scratch appear during normal use .......How do they sleep at night?

I really want to know where the majority of your banding you see.
Besides xda loading screen and angry birds I don't see it often enough to cry about. I've taken 500+ pictures and have viewed 100s of webpages and I don't see it being a major issue.

Secret wallpaper both versions, nexus s wallpaper, most penguin games, ubuntu wallpaper, pretty much anything that uses gradient.
If you're primarily browsing of course you wont see it cause its white page with black letter's.
And come on original sgs does not have this issue, nexus s had it but it was fixed. What is wrong in expecting it to be fixed on this phone or not have it in the first place.

Color banding? Don't have it.
Colors are incredible on my SGS2 and shades flow very smoothly. Best screen I've ever had.
yeah I've used a number of roms on my phone and haven't noticed any banding... I'm wondering if this is a hardware specific thing?
The default background image on the Go Launcher exhibits significant banding. The issue goes away when using CM7, currently this isn't a solution as CM7 is severely functionality-impaired at the moment.
A fix would be appreciated, it's a minor irritation though. Seems a bit silly to have such a powerful device with such a great screen and then run it at a lower bit-depth.

Go install Nenamark from the market and run the benchmark. You will see banding in the evening sky scene as the benchmark runs.
I don't think people are disputing the problem's there. The question was "are you OK with it?"

Yeah, because the problem IS there, anyone saying "I don't have it" or "it doesn't exists" is either ignorant or lying, because it's a FACT the problem(or whatever you want to call it) exists. The purpose of this topic is rather to ask to people how they live with it/what they think of it.
My 2 cents is that it's quite annoying. Now I see it, I notice it everywhere, games, apps, wallpapers. We'll see how the Tegra-version of the Galaxy S2 with SLCD screen will manage color gradients - if banding still occurs, we can be quite sure it's software-related, if not, there's more chance for it to be hardware-related(though not sure).

4.2 Grey Background Artifacts

Yes, this is the MOST annoying issue with the 4.2 update
How do you screw THAT up? Seriously, I can see minor artifacts in all gradients now, and the Grays are absolutely horrendous. Pisses me off to no end
Can you guys please reply to my issue I've posted and spread the word as much as you can? We're no devs, but the best we can do is to raise awareness, because this is an issue that is unacceptable in final build stable software across multiple devices.

Same here. I sent it back. Ordered a new one a couple of weeks later from another place, same issue.
There are many articles and threads about this problem, but unfortunately Google and ASUS seem to ignore it. And even here on xda, people get defensive about their Nexus 7 and downplays the problem, attacks DisplayMate for scientifically illustrating the problem etc.
It annoys the hell out of me because I _want_ to love the Nexus 7, I _want_ to _want_ to keep it. It has great hardware, great software and even the IPS screen is great, but unfortunately the end result is a display that is seriously miscalibrated. The simplest calibration tests of black level, shadow detail, white crush and saturation and intensity (especially of the green primary) shows the major issues. Worst, it is obvious in daily use all the time.
I probably will end up sending this second Nexus 7 back as well and buy something with a half-decent visual experience.

I already have PRISM disabled. It helps a tiny bit but does not begin to solve the problem at all. Gamma, white crush, green saturation and intensity, contrast etc. still looks like something from 5+ years ago.
And there are a billion threads about this on the internet. I wish Google would take it serious, but...

I don't know if I go lucky but when I went to safe mode and turn my device of overnight then in the morning I no longer experience this problem. Note I experienced your problem for 3 months and just yesterday the issue was resolved simply by doing what I stated. Good luck let me know what happens

Screen flickering in direct sunlight?

Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem

Thought my eyes were going crazy. Mine does this too. It even did it once under some fluorescent lights. It's not annoying enough to matter but it would be cool if it gets fixed.

Have you got purple/pink tint?

Hi guys,
So I literally got my Galaxy Note 3 two days ago (Snapdragon 800) and the first thing I noticed after I turned it on was the dreaded purple to pink hue that invades certain colours on the screen.
The issue is easiest to see on the Holo pop-ups. I think there is one for authorising Google location on start up and when you log into your Google account. It's easiest to see at night; I have my phone set to auto brightness, but set on any level it is noticeable.
Not a major issue for me, and I won't be taking my phone because of it. Just thought I would give everyone a heads up about it. The majority of people that have it will have probably not even noticed!
