[Q] Battery won't charge, new battery unrecognized - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having some issues with my Motorola Defy these past few days and I am hoping someone could shed some light on a potential cause for these issues.
I've been running cyanogenmod 7.2 for the past year and this is the first time I've had a problem.
Last week I noticed my battery draining incredibly fast, to the point where I would go from 100% to 0% in an hour or two. That time slowly dropped to where the battery wouldn't last more than a few minutes. After that I plugged it in and the battery would not charge past 4%.
I assumed my battery was bad so I ordered a new one. I got it in the mail, popped it in my phone, charged it to 100% and it managed to last about 4 hours before it dropped to 0%. I tried to charge it and once again the new battery would not go past 4%. I took out the new battery and tried the old one once again, but nothing changed. Once I put the new battery back into my phone, the phone will not longer recognize that the new battery is in. It shows the battery with a question mark whenever the new battery is in my phone.
An additional thing to mention is that if I plug the phone into my computer, I get a white light and the phone never boots.
That's where I'm at right now. My old battery will not charge and sometimes when I put my new battery in my phone it is unrecognized.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Try updating CM 7.2 again in custom recovery with full wipe(data/cache/dalvik), and this worked for me battery started charging.

Only 0% or 100% batt but nothiung in beetwin

Everything was just fine until yesterday when i realized the batterty's built-in monitor wasn't reading a real batt stat. I was sure I was running out of charge and the divice was still saying there was 50% left. I did a soft reset and my atom didn't boot. I took the battery off and waited more than 3 hours, put it back and couldn't boot. I haven't ever done anything to my mobile. No register tweacks, fisical hits or rom upgrades. I searched the web and found a procedure to get it back. Reset+camera choose 1 option and there you go with your device booting at last. I did so but when it ended whith the system loading proces it sent a notification saying that the battery was exhausted and it went off. Again it couldn't boot in a normal way even with the ac adaptor plugged in. I made sure the battery was fully charged. I did a bootloader again (reseat+camera) with the usb connected and i could get it back again but showing 0% battery indicator and would turn off as soon as i unpluged it. I tested the battery with a multimeter and even when it was fully charged i tried to recharge it until green light then i turned it on and the batt monitor was 100%. I could unpluged the usb and everything was fine. It didn't turn off but the indicator got stock in 100%. After an hour or so of normal use i was sure the battery was 90% or less while it was still indicating 100% of charge. I did a soft reset and couldn't boot again. I think the device knows when the battery is 100% charged but when it is less tha 100% and i do a soft or cold reseat the mobile thinks the battery is 0% and won't boot.
Yes, I have ugraded to ROM Xda-Atom-Exec-ENG-20060721-MOT0822 to see if this fixes it but now i have a rom-upgraded aton exec with the same fatal error.
I am at work rigth now and hopping my atom doesn't need a soft reset because if so i need to plug it in in order to be able to do a reseat+camera and wait some minutes until green ligth shows up. My atom knows 0% or 100% of battery charge but no numbers in beetwin.
Any ideas?
did you charge the battery for 8 hours on first use, continuing to discharge battery completely first three charges?
This is crucial for battery performance I now get at least three days of moderate usage and at least 7 days in standby, my advice is go buy a new battery follow the instruction manual completely, failing any changes (be sure to buy battery from somewhere you can get refunded) return the battery. Try also reflashing using bootloader mode, not using the SD card!
The last time i used bootloader was after hard reset a no card inside then i performed the last ROM upgrede available from O2. It seems to be a hardware problem more than a software problem as i thought at the begining.
I hope you are rigth, i guess the device gets charge information from the battery and the battery is telling it when it is 100% and 0% when it is under 100% and after a soft or cold reset. I am going to drain the battery all the way down and recharge it up to green light to see what happens. By the way i did not charge the battery 8 hrs when new.
Where do you think my atom is geting the batt charge information? From one of its inside sensors or from batt circuits?
Thaks for your advice.
I mean reflash using bootloader mode, ie. enter bootloader then plug in USB and run DSUU installer from your PC. Its hard to say where the fault lies, some Atom's had power management issues and O2 are fully aware of it, if yours is still under warranty I suggest sending it to a service center but be prepared to be without it for at least a month! (should change their name to SLOW2) and also be prepared to have it returned to you only to find they havent done a damn thing!
Its a bad battery, same thing happened to me. Just return it for a new one, the material is moulded with the smart chip inside there is no way to fix it.
Now my battery is beetwin 100% and 85%. I have searched other forums and i found out it is definitly a battery issue. It has been more than 6 months since i bougth my Atom so i have no more battery garanty. I thing i am going to wait before i buy a new one in orther to get the most of it since it still last more than 2 days.
Thanks for the information.
when a battery xp-02 (for atom family) is sometime stop at certain percentage, says 72% for long time, i do a soft reset and it drops to says 40%, is it a symptom of bad battery? or it is a ROM problem?

Wizard situation: worse then a coma and maybe better than dead... But doesn't turn on

Hi there,
First I apologize about my poor English, I am Brazilian and should speak portuguese, but this is the best forum ever... so I'll try my English
My story:
Four days ago my 1,5 years old 9100 running the WM6 NTS was working perfectly, the best device I ever had. But, at night, I removed the battery to get the SIM card and then I put the battery back but did not turn on the phone. I used the SIM card in another phone during the night. I was afraid to lost it.
In the morning, I removed the battery again, put back the SIM card and then the battery. When I tried to turn it on, nothing happened, just like as if it was without any power. I was surprised, because I had fully charged the battery in the night before and before I first remove the battery, it was about 80% of power. So, I decided to try to recharge again, but there was no lights on. I left it charging for about 10 minutes and got nothing.
So, as I was leaving home, I put the 9100 in my pocket, after a few minutes I tried to turn it on again and it worked. The battery meter was showing about 80%.
Ok then… It worked well on Monday. But when I woke up yesterday morning (Tuesday), the phone seemed to have self-restarted during the night. So, I typed my password and it started working well again. I checked the battery meter and it was showing about 40% of charge. After a few minutes the phone seems to be totally dead. I tried to charge it again and after 2 hours I got nothing, it was still dead, did not turn on and there were no lights on.
Later on that day, I got a multi-meter and checked the battery tension. With the positive on my left I could check that measuring the power with the wires on the 1st “slot” and on the 3rd on, I get 3.47V. Measuring the 1st with the 4th I get 3.63V and measuring the 1st with the 5th or 6th I get 3.75V. Check what I mean at http://webtennis.rg3.com.br/qtek_9100/battery.gif.
I tried to remove the battery, then put it back and then turn it on again… It started, but in a few seconds, when was showing the OS, SPL, etc… it went off. I tried that again; it started, loaded the OS and went off. Once again I tried this, but with the power cable on, so it started but in seconds was off again.
So I thought “that might be a bug, maybe if I run the update utility it will work”. I started the phone in the bootloader mode, but before I connect the USB cable and start the RUU the 9100 went off. A few more times tring to remove the battery and starting it again, it went off and never came back again!!
I plugged the power cable on the wall and on the phone and there were no lights on, but I could feel the battery a bit warmer, just like it used to get. I left on the wall all night long and today in the morning still nothing. I removed the battery for about 30 minutes and got nothing, neither the screen with the OS, SPL, IPL…
Now I am despaired, don’t know what to do, no clues. I am in Brazil and don’t know where I can take to be repaired and have no plans to get back to Canada or Europe for the next 3 months.
Can you help me with this problem? I love my phone and want it working again.
Thanks for all your help.
Battery problem...?
It seems as thought you may be having a problem with your battery, not your phone. Try buying a battery off eBay, they are pretty cheap, and that should tell you what the problem actually is.
Or if you know anyone that has a wizard, try your battery in their device. If the problem is still appearing, then you will know that you just need a new battery.
Battery or charger ?
I agree with zakhir_n, it sounds like a battery issue not the phone. My friends MDA battery died after 2 months of use, so you can never be sure. We swapped batteries and revealed it was his battery not taking a charge.
Next check that you are using the original charger. I went away on business and grabbed the nearest charger for my 8125. Needless to say I grabbed a Motorola charger and it refused to charge the dead battery. Make sure you have the original charger, as it MUST say 1000ma or 1Amp output on the plug. The Motorola one I used was only 500ma or .5Amp and it was unable to recharge a dead 8125 (MDA) battery.
New status: WORKING
Hi there,
Thanks for all the posts.
Well, I checked my charger and it is a 1A 5V and my battery gets 100% of charge.
This is what I did:
Fully charged the battery, removed it for about 1 day an then I turned it on. Surprise!!! It was working and worked for 20 minutes and went off again e seemed to be dead.
Once more I the same thing but this time I flashed it with an official ROM. Fully charged the battery and removed for about 1 day. When I tried to turn it on, it worked as it was new.
So I flashed it with the WM6 Core 2.0n. It worked perfectly. When the battery got 80% of power, it restarted itself for several tines.
Now I bought a new battery and it is working very well, no problems till now. Guess you were right… I really had to change the battery.
Thanks for all the help and sorry about my English!!!
Regards,
Arthur
Nooooooooooooooooooooo
Hi there… Got the worst birthday present ever!!! Today I woke up and my QTek 9100 wasn’t working.
I got a new battery, when I put it on my phone it was 54% of charge. I used it till it gets 13%, then I fully charged it with my computer’s USB cable. Used the phone for 1 day and the battery was again around 80% of charge (just like the other time). I put it on “flight mode” went to sleep. When I woke up……. it was not working anymore, I put back the old battery and got nothing.
Now it is with the new battery being charged with my wall charger (1A 5V), but there is no lights on.
I already tried to run the WM5, tried a new WM6, checked the charger, replaced the battery and none of this seems to solve my problem… Do you know what more I could try? Do you know where I can send it to fix in Brazil?
I don’t know what to do… I already sent e-mails to QTek and to HTC and after 1 week got no answer…
Thanks for all the help!!!

Strange battery issues

I'm running a Sprint Mogul using no2chem's nueROM 2.2 Preview 7 (8's touchscreen issues made me downgrade), and having some very peculiar battery problems I'm hoping someone has advice about.
A few weeks ago I woke up, pulled my phone from the charger, and watched the battery instantly drop from 100% to around 83%. Over the next 15 minutes it dropped to the mid-70s before leveling out and discharging at a more normal rate. This occurred the next day and so on. Now this was with Seidio's 3200mAh extended battery. I then switched to my (sigh) OEM battery and didn't have the same problem, so assumed it was Seidio's battery, filled out an RMA, and sent it off to be repaired.
Now a couple of days ago the OEM battery started doing the same thing. I'd pull it off the charge and it would have somewhere in the range of 60% battery remaining. I'd have to plug it into my car charger or USB cable on my notebook to charge it up the rest of the way (albeit very slowly).
This morning I decided to watch the process from before I even unplugged it. First I noticed the orange light was on after a full night's charge. If memory serves me, the light's supposed to go out when it's at 100% (I may be mistaken). Meanwhile the battery meter was at 60%. I unplugged it and it remained there. I plugged it back in and watched no2chem's charge meter show the power connection, and I went ahead and left it plugged in for a little while before checking it again. It was now at 63%.
So what I'm finding is that at some point during the night my phone stops accepting a charge, despite the charge light remaining on.
I'm going to experiment with two things to further troubleshoot: tonight I'm swapping chargers with my wife's. I'm pretty sure the phone controls whether or not it's continuing to charge the battery, but I'm going to rule this out the only way I can. Then if that doesn't improve it I'm going to flash back to a Sprint official ROM (sigh) and see if maybe no2chem's power applet or power management settings are somehow causing this oddity.
Does anyone have any extra experiences with problems like this that might give me an idea of what else to try? Otherwise my thinking is if those two steps yield no improvements, then it's the phone's physical battery management hardware that's faulty and I'm going to have to use my insurance to replace the phone. I'd like to exhaust all the other resources before I spend the $50 on the deductible, though.
Thanks!
sometimes mine overheats while charging, at that point the LED flashes orange until it cools down enough to resume charging, this might be happening to your in the middle of the night
I thought I heard purple meant overheating. Either way, it's not clearly describing it. Also this has never happened before, so if it's happening every single night now, I've definitely got a problem.
Anyway, just plugged it in with my wife's charger. Let's see how it turns out in the morning.

Sure sounds like a bad charger.

Now confirmed. Just pulled it off my wife's charger after a full night, at 100%. Five minutes later, 99%. Much better. I wonder what would cause the charger to stop charging halfway through the night, but keep the charge light on. Well, at least the mystery's been solved.
I am sort of having the same issue. A couple of weeks ago I decided to upgrade from the standard Verizon ROM for my xv6800 to DCD's 3.2.2 ROM. The upgrade went perfectly. I always plug in my phone every night before I go to bed. The light turns orange while it is charging and then it is green when I wake up. The phone always showed 100%. Now with the updated ROM, I do the same, plug in before I go to bed, the light turns orange, and it is green when I wake up. But, when I look at the battery level when I unplug it, it is usually at about 94%. The battery level also seems to go down quicker than before, but I figured that had to do with the GPS radio and WM6.1. Why do you think the battery would no longer show 100% when I unplug it? Seems very weird that right after I upgrade the ROM my battery would start failing.

DCD roms included new code to show 1% changes. The original code showed 10% changes only. Originally, you likely saw 100%, 90%, 80% etc. Now you see 95%, 94%, 93%, etc. It seldom goes to a perfect 100% and it LOOKS like it is discharging faster. In reality it is simply showing more detail.

Yes, I noticed the 1% increments, I figured it was Windows Mobile 6.1 compared to 6.0. I think the old method was reporting in 5% blocks.
So, your battery never shows 100%? Very weird. So, my battery is probably fine and it is probably behaving just like it always has?
Thanks for the information.

Major Battery Issues

I've been having problems with my battery for a week now, I noticed it wouldn't charge to 100% so that the green light comes on it will just goto 99% and then stay there. The battery then drains so fast, like literally I will be on 1% in an hour and a half.
So I tried a full reset of the phone and that didn't work. I also bought a new battery and that didn't work so I'm guessing the phone might well be knackered.
Also the phone seems to be really hot I never noticed it that hot before.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Replace battery immediately! Do not attempt to charge it anymore, it could go very bad!
I did, I bought a new battery and the same thing happens.
I have to have it on charge constantly all day.
Maybe charging control unit(in phone) is damaged, or charger is not working properly.
Can you check voltage on charger?
Also are you sure you use original battery manufactured by HTC?
Right here, my problem

Screen flickered, battery died

Hello everyone,
I read about this problem elsewhere but it didn't help.
Today I was at 40% of battery, phone ringed, I rejected the call, after few minutes picked it up, unlocked, screen started flickering and it died.
It didn't want to turn on. Took the battery out then back in, still didn't power on.
Placed it on charger, it started to charge, showing totally empty. After few minutes it went to 20%.
Took it of the charger, took the battery out to inspect it after reading on internet, it looked fine. Put it back in, turned it on, I was BACK AT 40%!!
Phone is one month old, practically new phone, never dropped it, bent it, nothing.
first of all fully drain the battery to 0% and then change battery to 100% and calibrate it thought this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vitula.batterycalibration&hl=en if it is still showing the same problem then it is possible that the battery must be faulty.
Yes it sounds like a faulty battery but its a new phone so I rulled that out
I usually charge the battery only when its less than 10%, usually 3-5% and then top it up to 100%. I never partially charge it. I will try this app next time I drain it
