I may be missing a setting somewhere but my audio via headphones is very loud. Even at the lowest setting it is probably only just bearable. I'm running custom kernel (chronic) and ROM (cyanogen) so I appreciate it isn't exactly stock!
I've tried Apollo and Play Music which both exhibit the same issue.
Before I wipe and reload again does anyone have any thoughts?
thanks

Probably the sound file was edited. You can manually edit it if you want. If not, just flash other ROMs.
See this thread for more sound loudness mod.
Thanks will give it a go!
Stopped all audio from working and hard resets the phone so didn't work unfortunately.
cheers

There used to be a thread where they teach ppl how to manually modify the sound files to increase the loudness. I can't seem to find it anymore.
I appreciate you trying. Will have a look around too.
Cheers

I haven't been able to find more than one other person on the net with this problem on the S4, so far. When I'm listening to music on my headphones with the equalizer set up the way I like it, the bass and treble will suddenly go flat. The difference is painful. I have to stop the music and start it again, if that even works every time, and then it eventually happens, again. Anyone else have a problem/fix for this?

I have the same problem and happens with google player of music, nor find solution.
Kingbeatz
Well, I started using this EQ that I used, faithfully, on my S2 Skyrocket before this phone. Kingbeatz, by user aznrice2k4 It sounds just as awesome on this phone. Incredible difference. So far, it hasn't turned off on me. From what I can tell, you need to have a custom recovery installed to make this work. But trust me, it's an amazing difference. If you need to, just enable it under sound when you install it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104968
same issue, multiple device all eq apps

i have a sony tablet s and kyocera hydro, while i know these are not powerhouses. unless the eq is ON SCREEN, it will randomly (quickly) shut down. even the updated google play music built in eq shuts down while still in the app if i backout to the playlist. i contacted google and they sent me this
Here is what my specialist sent me,"Since the equalizer activity is a part of the system and/or Media Framework, our Music app simply launches it. Please have the user perform a Factory Data Reset. My theory is another application may have disabled it, so unless he can edit source code to re-enable it,
so, turn it off, turn it back on...well no, its a system resource thing i suspect. im looking for a way to lock it on, so it cant be shut down. unfortunately i do not have sufficient knowledge to do so. i do have superuser access. any thoughts would be appreciated.
I know this is a super old thread, but I have been searching far and wide to try and find a solution to this problem. I tried running the stock rom, stock EQ, non-stock EQ, shostock ROM, and all have the same problem where the EQ stops working either between songs or when the screen locks. It is quite annoying. To make it work again, I simply have to turn the EQ off and then back on again, but that only fixes it for one song.
Anyone been able to figure this out?

# system props for the LPA/TUNNEL
#
lpa.decode=false
tunnel.decode=false
lpa.use-stagefright=false
Find that in your build.prop in /system and change any that say true.
Sent from my SGH-I337 running Foxhound 2.0
In case it helps anyone else:
I installed KingBeatz (as recommended by nvkn13) as well as changed the LPA/TUNNEL settings as recommended and the problem seems to have been resolved. Not sure what one fixed it, but it is working. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Side note: KingBeatz is amazing - even with a crappy set of earbuds the sound is remarkable.
So I've been having the same problem... I'm assuming to edit those values you have to be rooted? Because I tried to edit them through file manager and it said "error occurred when saving"
I rooted my Galaxy S4 i9500 and installed WanamLite.
The speaker volume was significantly lower than it was with the stock ROM so I reverted back to stock.
I tried mods that were supposed to increase the volume but they didn't work.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
TIA.

No, I didn't try that. Do you think it's worth another try? Because I'm back on stock now.
Update: OK, I've decided to give it another go and it works! Thanks a lot for your suggestion.
Maybe you know what's the highest safe value for the speaker amplification so it doesn't blow out the speaker?
I set it at 8db, is that ok?
Thanks again.

I only go for 4,, 8 is too much, and would probably damage the Speakers in the long run.
I have been searching like crazy to find a volume booster. I have been through rooting my phone, installing cyenogenmod, attepting wicked ROM, attempting Gummy ROM. Soft bricking my phone, flashing back to stock and have it rooted again. Just looking to boost the volume on my SGH-I337M.
Here is why it is important to me. Its great and all that Samsung wants to protect my hearing, however, I use my headphone jack as an aux out to play music for high energy fitness classes!! Some stereos at gyms that I go to are tuned down lower, and even at max my phone doesn't make it all loud enough for a good class! I even bought a separate walkman MP3 player, but it ended up going through the wash. Someone help!
THANKS!!
Try different kernels, rather than stock. Some have volume boosters - Ktoonz, and Adam are two that come to mind.
Consequently, I'm looking for the opposite - Increase vibration.....can't find anything that will do.....Ktoonz is wound up to 125 and
it still doesn't do the trick.

Check in to this, helps increase sound quality and loudness.Viper4Android
You'll need root and you'll need to install the driver upon opening the app then make your wanted sound changes.
Anything like this for a vibration mod? Make it stronger?

This. If you just want louder music, install Viper4Android, press menu in viper settings, select UI setting, change to Expert, then go all the way down to the bottom and change gain to 6Db
Update. Hell yeah!!! Viper works amazing. I finally improved the one and only thing that pisses me off about Samsung phones! There were some things to work through, but this will improve my classes for sure! Get the studio bumpin! Thanks again guys
Hi Folks,
I would appreciate your help please. I'm trying to get V4A to work with Poweramp without success. I've scoured XDA and the internet for solutions.
I'm rooted running stock with Art. Has anyone running Art been able to get this combo to work? If so please help!
Thank you!
I've managed to get it to work except I have to manually turn off Poweramp's eq everytime I plug in my headphone jack or switch to BT. Anyone know how to permanently turn off Poweramp's eq? Thanks!
P.s problem solved!
I managed to turn off the pa eq! It came to me in a eureka moment as I awoke this morning. You have to unassign each preset that you have set for headphones, speaker or Bluetooth. So make sure non are showing and eq will stay off!
The combination of PA with V4A is stunning!
Unassign the presents in Poweramp or V4A?

Get SElinuxchanger if your rom is set to enforcing, set it to permissive and you have to run V4A in compatibility mode - that way it works for me, however the sound quality is MAYBE not so good in this mode, in normal mode I get better sound quality I think
Same Problem
Hey guys, for the last few weeks Viper4android worked fine on my poweramp, however suddenly the processing status was set to "no".
I did all the necessary steps to enable V4A,like disabling equalizer, direct volume control etc. , so I don't know what the problem could be. V4 A does work on other music players though. But still as I prefer it to work on my Poweramp, please help me if possible to find a solution.
STILL NOT FIXED
I have rooted and unlocked my Axon 7 (A2017G) and edited the mixer_paths.xml file to make the audio output louder.
But there's a little problem (and I don't know if it's because of the mixer paths edit, I don't think so)
My top speaker sounds a lot more dull than my bottom speaker. My bottom speakers seem to be louder too.
How to check this? And are there more people experiencing this?
Thanks in advance.
Did not do anything to my A2017G, but I find that my top speaker is louder and "sparks" when near at full volume

Some say it's dust, but I don't know how. I haven't called with this phone much.
Bump. It's everywhere. Even on LineageOS, bottom speaker is almost twice as loud :/ It can't be dust.
BUMP
This problem is getting on my nerves. The bottom speaker is twice as loud and crispy as the top speaker, which sounds dull.
Anyone else had this and possibly fixed it?
Two questions
Did you try to reset your phone and test the speakers again?
Is there the same problem on YouTube and mp3 music files?

1. Yes I switched between roms to test modems and other stuff for ZTE.
2. Ofcourse. It's obviously the same on every output.
I guess it's just a hardware fault, but I thought maybe someone would have fix (clean it or something?)
Then I would say that this is an hardware problem indeed.
Having the same issue here, thought that other ROM will provide the fix but still zilch. Rooting the phone only meant the void of guarantee so not really good move there either.
I read somewhere online that usually bottom speaker is the one to go out first and that global version has the speakers a lot different then American and Chinese version). Any other possible fixes before replacing it? And where to find the replacement too?
Update: it should be software related since the sound in earphones has the same problem - only inverted. Which means there should be a tweak in binary or something?
I'm willing to pay to whoever makes this problem disappear. I'm beyond the point of helplessness here...
Fixed!
Fixed the issue finally! ??
Go to:
- settings
- advanced settings
- accessibility
- mono speaker output.
For the last trick to work, just try to disable it, then enable it and restart the device. Disable it again when device rebooted. Worked as a charm for me! So I'll be saving me some money ???

Omg! This problem was bugging me since day 1, but could not find any solution to this... But I've tried what you said and it works wonders! Can't believe I can now finally listen to music the way it was intented, since having a speaker with lower volume on a stereo setup is very annoying. Thank you very much for sharing the solution with us!
