So, unfortunately on my way to work this morning at 5:30 am, while on the train my phone was grabbed out of my hand by a teenage boy and then her ran off the train ):
All i was doing was silencing the alarm, he timed it perfectly. SMDH
Well, i spent all AM calling toll free # to toll free #. T-Mobile/Microsoft/HTC.
What i do not understand is how NONE OF THEM were able to track the phone for numerous reasons (allegedly)
Esp. since i was unable to do it via. the Microsoft my phone website.
Also, what is the point of having to report it stolen and file a police report for the claim when I still have to pay the same thing I would if i was neglectful and lost/broke it....?
Oh sry one more question, why isnt the memory card covered if it came inside the phone?
That sucks! It sounds like the kid knew to pull the battery as soon as he got out of sight.
If he's smart, he'll probably leave the battery out for a few days, or only boot up the phone once in the early morning.
Without the battery to power the GPS, the different recovery methods won't work.
If the kid also flashes a new ROM right away, then myPhone will never find it. Not sure about HTC's method, which may include using the unique ID.
There's a cab floating around here somewhere which will email you if someone switches SIM cards on your phone, or if you send your number a special text. This only works if they don't flash a new ROM first though. And it's a little late for you

Memory cards are an accessory and those are never covered
On the flip side of that, when your new phone arrives, it could very well have a new card in it anyway. Especially if they are loading them at the factory before packaging.
its no good to you now, but remotetracker can survive a hard reset if the sd card doesn't change, or be cooked in with your settings permanently, and it can cope with sim card being changed.
it also allows you to lock up the phone, wipe the card, show message on screen, get call and txt details, get location on cells when gps can't, recover any files you like, via email or even ftp. loads more, amazing piece of free software.
I wish i would have knew all of that ):
I havent even had this phone for a full month yet.
he is very bold though. smh he didnt even turn it off. me and someone called and he answered and had a whole convo! grrr
it really sucks that t-mobile cant blacklist the IMEIs like t.mobile does.
OH, AND ITS CURRENTLY BACKORDERED!!! Ugh when will it be over

SMH. What upset me was that they didnt even attempt to track it. Esp. microsoft. i told them when online it wasnt letting me do so and they said its only an online feature and they cant help. like wth is CC for?
They treated it like it was lost although i had a police report.
taking the easy option. no one cares about anything today. lazy [email protected]$

To make things worst, I woke up this morning only to check MMP, and I can see the contacts/pictures & texts that the person who has my phone are sending/saving!!! And yet Tmobile are still saying they cant track the phone number....B.U.L.L.S.H.*.T.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW LONG IT MIGHT BE ON BACKORDER??? ):

It seems like a lost cause.
Im wondering why i can see this though, is it due to my email still being attached to the phone?

well he's still using your number right...? you said you were able to call and talk to him, so the phone won't know what his number is. However, I'd put money down on the fact that the very first number he called when he got the phone, was his own, so he could get your number off his phone's incoming call. Call the very first number that appears in your t-mobile call logs as happening after he stole it, and I'll bet the same guy (him) answers as when you called your number.
Either way, I would follow samsamuel's suggestion and start putting pressure on every single person in his contact list, or even put a post up on craigslist addressed "to everybody on this a$$hole's contact list, he stole my phone"...and post every single name in there, and whatever choice commentary you feel would help flush him out
Shoot, start posting every single one of his text messages online....especially the most private or embarassing ones for he and his friends. Watch his messaging activity too and I'm sure you'll spot and e-mail address or facebook/myspace account name, something you can use to smack him in the face with info....you may not know who he is, but you certainly have access to enough info about him to make him regret it.
I'm guessing at this point he still has no idea that you can see all that about him, so use your advantage here wisely....

That was yesterday. Afterward i suspended my acct and he must have sold it to or gave it to a female b/c she is in the pictures and by the text language I can tell its a girl...
So as of ystrday after I cut the service off, the sim card has been changed to hers but TMO wont help smh.
But you gave me a great idea. i know 9/10 i wont receive my phone back but i can make the person with it extremely annoyed *runs to craigslist* LOL
TMOBILE should really think about using some of the features Sprint/Nextel and others use....

Ahhh gotcha. Ok well yeah then I think the best you can do is just be very crafty with how you use what you can see. I still feel confident that they have no idea that myphone is doing it's thing, so just don't tip that hand too soon I know I'd have a bit of perverse fun coming up with ways to take advantage of all that!
It's interesting that myphone still updates to your same account even with a new sim/number....I guess it makes sense, since you log into an msn account to use it, and it probably only cares what data there is to back up, not what phone number or carrier account it's tied to.
Even though the myphone site won't tell you where it is, do any of the other "now what?" (premium) services show as possible? It says you can wipe the phone remotely if they work, but you may lose the insight myphone is giving you for now. But, it may become the final option at some point
EDIT: I guarantee you that T-mobile has the ability to do more to locate the phone....but without a supoena in your hand, you may never benefit from that

Not exactly sure, but I don't you think you'll be able to do much of anything without activation. Why don't you go try, then let everyone know if it works.

I've tried three times back in time and then I went back to android. They are still telling me to call them.
The phone works fine without activation, you can still unlock it, however, if its not activated you can kiss goodbye to the marketplace, live services and xbox live
setup a google account to aid you with unlocking it
just phone for activation and kick up a fuss, remain ignorant and pretend you havent got a clue what your doing, speak to a supervisor if you must, i kicked up all manor of ****e when they told me i had to contact O2 and eventually her boss sent me an email with the key.
i think i shouldnt have said it came from O2 and said it was secondhand, perhaps that will work, in any case, MS cant do anything to you other than not giving you the code, your not breaking the law so dont worry about it.
I've tried to activate mine two times with no luck. They wanted me to send them a photo of the front and back of the phone as well as a copy of the sales slip. I sure hope that someone finds a workaround soon.

I need to know if there is any record or event log kept in the phone as to when an SD card is removed or inserted, or when the phone is turned off, battery removed, etc., and if such a log exists, how to view it.
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S / Sprint Epic 4G, firmware version 2.2.1
I've tried searching for "event log" to no avail, "SD card removed" mostly turns up people who are getting messages that their SD card is not there, etc. Not sure if there are better search terms to use to find the answer.
Long Story: My phone was stolen from my office, I sent several texts to it from other phones informing the person who had it that the phone had GPS tracking software enabled and I was recording everywhere the phone went (complete bluff). The next day, I was contacted by someone who was in possession of my phone, her story changed several times, from the person who stole it was a friend and felt bad and gave it to her to give to me, to she didn't know the person, to the person being her brother who found the phone in a 7/11 bathroom.
I find their frequent story changing very suspicious and suspect they are covering for the person who actually stole my phone, but I don't want to go to the police and press charges against someone who might just be a good Samaritan.
The phone was returned with the SD card removed. I suspect the theif thought it was a SIM card or something that could help locate or identify the phone and ditched it. Her "brother" told me he found the phone at 5:00, and is willing to say the same in a police report. I need to know if the SD card was removed from the phone before or after 5:00 before I decide to attempt to press charges against the people who returned the phone to me.
Sorry that happened. While I don't know the answer, the subject relates to a great free app I've put on my phone & is getting more popular called Android Lost. It helps track and remotely lock/wipe (including just the SD) and control the phone in lots of cool ways. Hoping it'll help other folks. The SD card use log though is not one of its features, so I'd be interested to hear if that's possible at all.

Thanks for the response! I actually found out about Android Lost while I was trying to figure out what I could do to find the phone, but it was too late. I was able to remote install it via the android market web page (I see that it is installed now that I have the phone back), but it seemed to require manual activation from the phone to work before I could do anything, so it was too late.
There was another app called Plan B that supposedly will work with a remote install even without any use of the phone, it did install but it never worked. Tried it on a friend's phone right in front of us and it didn't work on his either, so I can't recommend Plan B to anyone who comes across a similar problem in the future.
I guess the real lesson here is, install and register Android Lost before the phone is lost! Which I have now done.
Now my goal is to try to find out who in my office is a thief, but without screwing over someone who might potentially be a good Samaritan just returning my phone to me.

She was a woman with a 4 year old kid. The problem is that I don't know for sure if she is somehow involved with the person who stole the phone or not. Hi.
The Nook Simple Touch is the only e-reader that matches my requirements - good to hold, e-ink, touch screen AND hardware page turn buttons, NOT an Amazon device. Thought I'd mention that BEFORE someone recommends the Kindle, or Kobo, or whatever!
Having said that I live in the UK. My friend who is on business in the US just now is supposed to bring one back but has just messaged me to say that his father's device (bought last month) has been locked by B&N as it is for "US users only". I believe he simply activated the device by creating a B&N account and registering it back in the UK. I had suggested, before hearing about this locking, that he turn mine on over there and register it on a US IP address and then turn off wifi - I would use Calibre PC Sync only so B&N would never "see" the device connect to themselves again.
Several questions -
1. Would my approach work? i.e. Register it in the US, turn off wifi.
2. Is it possible to kick my friend's dad's device back into action somehow? Preferably without rooting.
3. Is it possible that my friend's dad's device was locked by 1.1, assuming he had wifi on and the update was pushed?
4. Would there be a way to get 1.1 and not be locked?
Basically, we'd both like 1.1 (for the benefits it brings) but not fussed about rooting.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Well first off I'm a newbie for this forum therefore I may not be fully equipped for your question.
Then again I'm using the NST for some time (3 months), I'm not in US (Turkey), the device was never been logged in US (as far as I know).
I've never experienced any locks or malfunctions since. The only thing I can't do is purchase a book. But then I never tried I'm sure I can find a way.
I'm using it's wi-fi browser, since it is rooted in it's first week I'm using dropbox to manage my ebooks.
PS. I have a B&N account for a valid but unreal posting address.
I'm outside of the US, using a nook very nicely (IMHO better then the kindle or Kobo)
I've updated to 1.1 without a hitch and everything is running smoothly. As for registration, you can try this (wish i new about it when i activated mine)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15618850&postcount=8
otherwise, what i did, I just filled in phoney information to get past the registration. My device is never on wifi (battery drain) and i sideload any updates. Since i use this as a dedicated e-reader, I've not bothered rooting it at all (I can't say the same for my phone)
I'm in Brazil, and I've restored and reseted my nook about three times since last week, and everytime I wiped it clean, I has to put my login, which worked fine.
To get books, I use a proxy on the computer - telling BN server that I am in US -, get the books (buy ou just get the freebies), and then connect my nook and download it, using even local server. It can be bothersome to buy on computer, but it works.

Interesting, I tried the US proxy method several times when I first got my NST, and I also have a US shipping address registered with B&N, but still my orders were cancelled.
I suspect the reason was using a non-US credit card, but then why were you able to buy eBooks?
Anyway, there's a way around it all if one absolutely must buy eBooks from B&N, just buy electronic gift cards and use them to purchase eBooks
I've entered my virtual credit card number, to try this and succesfully downloaded free books tonight.
Without spoofing or proxy...
As for buying can't tell yet.
Well, I have an international credit card, and it works like a charm.
I have a truckload of free stuff from BN, and they were all downloaded on my house's wifi.
Thanks all for the replies!
Couple more questions - isn't that bypass registration trick for the colour Nook? Or does it work for the NST too?
When you've talked about fake info in your B&N account, what details do you need there? Is it just a phoney US address, or a credit card and real address, or credit card and phoney US address? As I wouldn't be buying from the site I don't think it would matter that my credit card had the wrong address?
Cheers again for the help.

The registration trick should work for the nook, according to the thread. I've not tried it, so can't speak to it.
As for information, What i did was register online the B&N's website, placed my order for the nook to a friend of mine who lives in the USA, then when activating my nook, just entered my user/pass. I don't remember exactly how i paid for it, it was either Credit card or PayPal. That information is probably still tied to the account.
I think i'll go check when i have time and remove those references.

Hi there...
I live in italy and did exactely the same (middle september, if i'm not remember bad)...
I've just create an account, paid with debt card, shipped in USA address...then , when i received in italy, just activated with my BN account.
Until now, i've never updated via wifi because i prefer to check often on BN website and download from there... it is really a simple method and usually you can find it on support site 1 or 2 week before they release it via wifi
Had some questions about my experience with this -
1. Do you need to fake a US address? (I'm in London, UK) Do you need to enter real card details?
2. Does the OoBE Skipping technique work? (seems like Nook Color only)
3. Did you manage to update it to 1.1?
My answers, if it helps anyone...
1. See 2.
2. The Skip OOBE technique works fine. I didn't do it myself as I got my friend to try it in the US before he came home in case we needed to try something else... we figured it might help if he was in the US at the time. As it turned out that wasn't an issue as the "skipping" technique worked perfectly.
3. I backed up my Nook as per this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15115162 - before doing anything at all. I was on version 1. I backup up, then sideloaded the 1.1 update and backed up again. There were no issues so the backups weren't needed but better safe than sorry.
Notes: I don't use Wifi at all and sideload all books. I had no intention of using wifi so have no idea how skipping registration affects online use. The Factory menu "trick" doesn't seem to work in 1.1 (for me at least)... so be careful if you go to 1.1 first it might stuff things up.
Cheers for all the help here.
The factory mode does indeed work on 1.1:
1.Hold the right top button and move your finger from left to right on the top of the screen.
2.The factory button will appear at the bottom right of the screen, tap it.
3.Hold again the right top button and tap the right bottom part of the screen, where the factory button appeared
4.A button labeled skip oobe will appear, tap it, your done
^ Thanks for all the details!

Cool, does it just work from the main register/pre-register screens then? Obviously as mine is already skipped I was just trying it from the regular home screen - and it didn't work from there, for me.
It works before you register or after you deregister, on the first screen that appears, without clicking any button, don't know if I've expressed myself correctly here

Ah okay, that makes sense, cheers. I was trying it after registration had been skipped just out of curiosity, to see what else was in the Factory menu.
Just wanted to report back about my battery life so far with the Nook Simple Touch.
I received the Nook on the 3rd Dec.
From the 3rd (battery at 80%) to the 13th Dec, I've needed 2 full charges, thus a charge is averaging 5 days.
I've been thinking that the battery may be faulty (lots of posts online that some batteries cannot hold a charge). So i googled it for a while. I then came across a post on the B&N forum AND XDA, saying that if you keep your nook unregistered, the battery life will drain much quicker. I decided to put this to the test.
http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...reader-battery-life-lousy/td-p/1071104/page/7
(cant find the XDa post atm)
I proceeded to Factory Reset the device and log in with an email address (skipping the card details) after the 2nd full charge.
It has been about 36 hours since the full charge and the battery is at 96%. (Avg 1.5 hours reading every day). From simple extrapolation (I know this wont be accurate), it should last me 37.5 days! Pretty big difference compared to the <5 days I have been getting.
Not sure if its the Unregistered part, or whether my Wifi Radio was not shut off properly before (and registering allowed me to turn on and off the Wifi properly), but so far it seems significantly better.
Will report back when the next charge is due.
PS. Not all USB cables work with the Nook! Was going mental about it, thought my eBay seller ripped me off! Use the supplied B&N cables (somehow my Samsung Galaxy S USB cable works too)
Why would a unregistered Nook Simple Touch's battery drain faster than a registed one
I live in the US and could register the NST, but it's the pricipal of the matter and I don't want to register it. I completely disagree with having to register a device when I OWN it, not Barnes and Noble.
I do not wish to root it. I do not wish to receive free books or content from B&N.
I just want my sideloaded NST to have the "2 month" battery life that B&N advertises WITHOUT registering to a B&N account.
The thing is, I have read on other forums (as well as the post directly above) that bypassing B&N registration causes the battery to drain really fast... faster than the ~2% a day WITH registration.
Currently I am experiencing the same average 20% battery loss per 24 hours with Wifi OFF and little to no use. 20% a day equals recharging every 5 days, which is far from the advertised "2 months" or 2 weeks (claims from reviewers) for that matter.
I have scoured the internet and I know others are experiencing the same battery drain with an unregistered nook, but I cannot find the reason as to why this is.
Personally, I really dont understand how bypassing registration would have anything to do with the battery...but, I am not very tech savy.
Any suggestions as to how to fix the battery drain issues on a nook that is not registered to a B&N account as well as an explanation of what is causing this issue?

I live in the US and could register the NST, but it's the pricipal of the matter and I don't want to register it. I completely disagree with having to register a device when I OWN it, not Barnes and Noble.
I do not wish to root it. I do not wish to receive free books or content from B&N.
I just want my sideloaded NST to have the "2 month" battery life that B&N advertises WITHOUT registering to a B&N account.

I do not see the "issue"...
Registering a Nook does not mean you will receive spam from BN, 'cause you can decide to do not receive it....
I just receive newslettetr , because i want it, nothing more... If so, what to say about Kindles with advertising????
Sometime i really do not understand peoples: when you are buyng a car, you need to regiter it, but i neve ear about someone said "i'll not buy a car, because Government ask me to register it..."
The ISSUE is that it does not make any sense that the battery should drain if it is unregistered. I am COMPLETELY aware that you do not receive spam. I just do not want to receive ANYTHING from B&N. I hope the next person who posts can answer my question, not assess why I don't care to register my Nook.
My ISSUE is this:
How do I prevent battery loss if I bypass the B&N registration??
I have a OnePlus 8 Pro that i need to get in to. The phone is mine on my T-Mobile account, i bought it for my brother on his birthday.
2 days ago he committed suicide. No note No explanation nothing. He was the strongest person we all knew. Never showed any weakness.
Even his wife cant understand it. I need to be able to get into the phone. There has to be something in there that shed some light on WHY???
His wife, daughter and I NEED answers. I have a ton of experience rooting and modding phones but i don't know how to get past a lock screen without wiping the phone.
If anybody can help me out i would be forever grateful. I would even pay if that's necessary. I am in so much pain right now over this.
Please help

Sorry to hear this.
If the phones on Android 11 then theres no twrp so there no way to remove the passcode / pin as far as I'm aware.
Here's a guide explaining how to remove a passcode. However I think with an encrypted phone you won't be able to access files even via twrp.

Data recovery companies may be able to help if it's really needed.
Don't advise them as to what's happened just the phone is yours and your brother was using it, don't tell them how important it is or the price may just go up.

Thank you for this info. I will attempt whatever i can.
I will try this and see if it works. I just received a call from the detective and he said they have a device that could do this for us.
I might go that route since there is nothing illegal that he was doing.
was just hoping to do it today as to get it done sooner.
Thank you for the help

As it's Android it'll be possible. But difficult without the right kit..
I'd clarify what the detective wants to see on the device and can you be present for the unlock.

Exactly what i was thinking. I would prefer i am there and they unlock it and hand it straight to me.
I know he wouldn't appreciate anybody not the closest of family getting access and seeing his personal thoughts.

Tbh I wouldn't want anyone looking through my phone is like a treasure trove..
I'd bare that in mind, not everything is meant to be seen. Doesn't mean anything, it's just how we are.
OP, sorry for your loss. That's all I have to offer. RIP.
Just my condolences to you and family
I'm sorry to hear also. May God bless you and family.
Thank you everyone that offered condolences

Any luck with it?
As insensitive as this sounds, I am a homicide detective. If he had a fingerprint lock on the phone, you could use his physical fingerprint from his hand prior to burial to unlock the phone. We have used this method several times with success.
Regardless, my condolences to you and yours.

Yeah i was hoping to be able to do just this but since the family members are not very etch savvy, they power cycled the phone off and because of that the first unlock into the system has to be with the numeric password.
I rebuilt his laptop for him a couple months ago so i have the password to get into it. I'm hoping that he saved his email credentials in it. I know that after multiple attempts into android it allows you to change password through the email. This is the last thing i can think to do.
I reached out to OnePlus this morning and the woman who was answering my questions said she had no answers for me. she kept saying i could factory reset it through recovery mode. I already know that, i need the info on it. I'm thinking about reaching out to google also. Who knows they might help since the phone is in my name on my account.

Not yet. I had an appointment to day with the funeral home to get access to his body so we could use his fingerprint but the phone was turned off since his last login.
It now required the numeric password before logging in. I have one shot left that i can think of. If i can gain access to his email i might be able to reset the password that way.
Fingers crossed. It was so hard yesterday going to the funeral home. We all need answers

I saw that. unfortunately i don't have his email credentials for his Find My Device.
Also the sm card was removed my his wife before she gave it back to me unfortunately.
Although it does connect to my Wifi at home... I'm almost to the point of giving up.
I don't think we will ever know why he did what he did.
Thank you to everyone that jumped on this thread. I love this community.
I kinda don't buy the OP story but here is my take:
- Doesn't need a SIM to get/use Find my device working but does require Google account access which is recoverable easily.
- It's trivially easy to recover a Google account with the phone number of the deceased unless the person specifically removed those options and used for instance an authenticator app (of if you don't have the actual SIM or access to that phone number but that would be strange).
- If you cannot recover the account that way, you can still recover it using a legal path by providing the correct inheritance documents to Google (through a lawyer if required) which should pose no issue (again this should pose no issue and while it would take time, it would work).
- Whatsapp cloud backup (on Google drive) is enabled by default and if you're after that, it's probably gonna be trivially easy to restore said backups on any new phone by using the SIM card of the deceased. Unless the person specifically disabled this to prevent this.
You can most likely recover Whatsapp messages without even unlocking the phone. This whole process is actually not hard and requires no tech help and can be done through the legal processes.
Added to all this, I checked your history and saw that you requested help before unlocking a Pixel phone that magically came into your possession before. So it seems you have a pattern of coming into possession of locked phones that makes me very suspicious of your demand.
I'll report this thread and ask a mod to review it.
Sorry. I also have doubts any time I see a story here asking for help unlocking a phone. Always sounds suspicious, and furthermore where are the mods here? Aren't there rules that state no requests for help unlocking phones??
Here is the OPs other post:
" Junior Member11 postsThanks: 2
I have a 64gb Pixel 4 XL that i want to unlock and use on T-Mobile.
The phone was never actually on a Sprint account. It was never technically paid off by a consumer. Its also never been activated on the sprint network to my understanding. (Which are all required to have sprint send an unlock code)
It was given to me by a Sprint store manager when they had to clean out end of year inventory.
I'm trying to figure out if i can unlock it somehow without having to get sprint to send the unlock code.
I don't really want to go through the hassle of explaining to them how i got a hold of it when they look at it in the system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated"
@San Diego The moderators are here and monitoring the thread since it has been created. And these are the XDA Forum Rules to cross-check.
To ask for assistance is not against the rules, and if you read back in the thread quite a few legal possibilities have been given. They obviously didn't delivered the desired result. However, as soon as the discussion or advices deviate towards the obscure side or to paid unlock services this would be removed immediately.
If you check the thread, from which you quoted, you'll see that moderators were acive in it, too.
Stay safe and stay healthy!
