Hello everybody! I believe it's about time for me to upgrade my phone, I have got a LG Optimus 2X running paranoid android 2.6. I like to try different roms, and most importantly: I like the stock Android experience! Recently I have been taking a look at the Nexus 4, and I have also tried it in store. There are however two factors that I am unsure of: How does the screen match today's flagships in sunlight? How long will the battery last me with average usage (Couple of sms, phone calls and a bit of music)? I am very thankful for any helpful answers in this matter!

Under sunlight this phone is very good. Definitely better than SAMOLED displays. I never have problems viewing under the sun.
Battery life is subjective but mine lasts the day. I text often and use twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. I also listen to Google all access music.
With the combination of specs and price, the N4 is still the best phone out there IMO.

All phone screens suck in sunlight. This one fairs better than others. If your not a heavy phone user you should be fine battery wise. I'm on the damn thing all day browsing the internet, texting, some gaming, you tube and this is the first phone (without extended battery) that I didn't need to plug in at 2 pm. For the price it is definitely the best phone out there.

With that type of use you would get through a day without a problem, so don't worry about the battery.
As for the screen, it's not the best in direct sunlight, but it's definitely better than amoled.
The only problem you should know about is the delayed notifications (email, whatsapp..) over wifi due to the buggy wifi driver from qualcomm.

Not rooted this phone comes with horrible colors compared to an HTC One or an iPhone 5 and bad battery life.
Rooted and with another kernel maybe or UV settings it's pretty good.
I will probably root it and install paranoid android or something just to try it out, so I am open to try custom kernels, settings, roms and such. The thing that worries me is that a lot of resellers here in Sweden are about to stop selling the Nexus. Are there any confirmed rumors or news about a new nexus, or maybe an updated nexus 4? If not, then I'll buy it!

If it was confirmed, it wouldn't be a rumor
A new Nexus is still 4-6 months away, probably. The Nexus 4 is still a very good phone.

IMO, I think it's better to buy a phone ~6 months after it's release date anyway. That way, other people have developed ROMs, found and fixed software glitches, and the manufacturer has made revisions to the hardware, giving you the phone in it's prime. Plus, Google has been known to botch the shipment of the first few batches of phones after release.
get the n4, new android os is coming soon!
Screen is visible outdoors, and with the usage you described you'll get through a day no problem. My advice would be to buy from Google.

The best thing about getting one of these is that software wise, your phone won't be obsolete for > 5years

Hello all,
I got my Galaxy Nexus on day of release, so had it some 6 months or so, the other day I bought a Galaxy S III, the following day sold my Galaxy Nexus for 320€ (loss of 300€ in 6 months, can live with that).
Now, I must say while I loved the GN display I was one of those who suffered from the squares when on low brightness. That was my biggest gripe with the GN... Battery life was 2 days on one charge.. stock Android, loved it.
So on to the S3, performance? wow, very nice, in general pretty smooth. Could I tell a massive noticeable improvement over the GN? Not really.
Sound, MUCH MUCH MUCH better on the S3 ...
Build quality seems a tiny bit less than the GN.
I certainly do not like the physical home button on the S3.
Camera and video, on S3 very pleased indeed.
One very annoying bug is that for some reason I've got no DTFM tones in a call... which is a #taxibookingfail for me Had to grab the misses iPhone 4S to ring the damn taxi company in the end. #eggonface
The Samsung widgets etc I think are average. HTC do much nicer ones thats for sure.
I do miss the GN a lot, and stock Android is wonderful.
As I've been using fastboot to install new release ROM's on the GN, find it a pain to flash the S3. I'm on Mac and I wanted to flash the latest EU ROM in the hope it would fix the DTFM issue, but I just can't seem to get it done. Yeah I've grabbed Heimdall, extracted the ROM, blah blah, even looked at CLI flashing, but it's not working. I guess there is no fastboot for the S3. If anyone knows better please do say. Also are there OTA packages for the S3 that can be downloaded and patched via recovery?
Anyway.. all the best guys
Thank you sir. You just persuaded me to get a gnex. From the google play store, they are only $400 us. It will be a big upgrade from my samsung captivate (carrier branded galaxy s1)

So I myself am also making the transition from the gnex to the gs3 and my biggest gripe is the battery on the gnex. In your opinion how much better battery life did you get from the gs3 then you did from the gnex?
I would recommend Mobile ODIN to solve your flashing problem. It lets you download things right to your phone, and it will auto reboot and flash them for you. I grabbed the pro version for 4USD because it auto-downloads any fixes you need.
As far as the Gnex, I am surprised you are not happier moving to your GS3. I had a grey Gnex for about 4 months, and the screen quality, camera, and speaker volume were terrible. I was worried it would be similar on this phone, but all three of those areas seem vastly improved to me.
Galaxy nexus is the best device compared to s3 due to the price, stock ics and on screen navigation
Price is the biggest one for me
I bought galaxy nexus for 27000
S3 price abt 39000
Samsung touch wiz and s voice is a crap.
Except microsd I am happy with the purchase of gnex....

Don't do it. The screen drains the battery on the GN like there's no tomorrow! Unless you turn the brightness way down...then you can't enjoy the HD screen which defeats the purpose. Also the screen is kind of washed out looking, with everything looking yellowish especially at lower brightness. Also the external speaker on the GN is really low and probably one of the worst I've ever heard on a phone. There's a couple more things but these are my main gripes with the phone. The Screen and speaker are 2 very important features that have to work right on my phone. So I'm selling my basically new GN and getting the GS3 on the 21st.

Approximately twice the screen on time in my case, from 3 to almost 6 hours screen in time.
Idle consumption is worse on sgs3 due to possible bug but screen on time is what matters the most.
Overall performance is much better, but battery life was the top reason for me to move to sgs3 from gnex.

Yes the battery life on the GSM sucks monkey balls.
I loved my gnex but it had a few small issues. Wifi has short range, the speaker volume was low and the screens colors were more washed out. Overall the Gnex is still solid and one of the best phones I've had. Got love for gnex.

I'll be getting rid of my g nexus here as well. I get about 4 hours maybe 4.5 of constant screen time. Standby is really good with franco and aokp but those roms and cm well likely be on the s3 regardless so not much reason to stick with the nexus at this point.
I'm just waiting for the second batch. They are likely running full tilt and the manufacturing will tighten up quality wise on the second + runs.

Okay guys here is my problem. I got a Play Gnex GSM last month. I have the car dock and pogo landscape dock. The Nexus is my first Android phone. I don't run custom roms and have little interest in modding the device. It is rooted. I play videos and mostly spotify. I was very pissed about the sound volume but have figured that out with Volume+ and finally got the settings I like. As of right now I have no complaints with the phone and love it. I also have the 3800mah and three regular batteries (one original and two qcell non-nfc) so battery issues are not a problem for me. I've never been a hard core gamer on the phone so FPS isn't a concern either. That could change if I got hooked I guess. Also the pogo dock is great. I dock the Nexus and use it as a clock at night. I could do the same with the GS3 but would have to plug a cord in all the time.
To be honest my original intention was to purchase the Nexus then after the GS3 was released give the Nexus to my wife and purchase the GS3. My wife has been using my old iPhone 3g for two years and it's on it's last legs. Not to mention it's jailbroken and Ultrasn0wed for the unlock. It's on 4.01. I'm having second thoughts now. I love the Nexus. On the other hand the GS3 I know is going to be super incredible plus the microsd storage would hold everything I could possibly throw at it. I'm also expecting improved audio from the GS3 as well. I'm okay with the Nexus audio but it doesn't even touch the quality from my two year old iPhone 4.
Should I pass the Nexus on to the wife and get a GS3 or should I wait until the next Google phone comes out and hope it has great specs and pass the Nexus along then? Money isn't that much of a issue at the moment. I already have a 64gb card and plan on selling my iPhone 4 when it's unlocked (as soon as I get the unlock e-mail confirmation from Apple and do a restore, ATT already approved the unlock yesterday). I would be getting the ATT LTE version.
Another option is to use the Nexus and not sell the iPhone but let her use it until the next Google phone comes out then do the rotation.
For those of you that have "upgraded" to the GS3 from the Nexus how many of you would do it again?

Same if it not better than my Sprint GNex. I turn off the GPS whenever I'm not navigating and that saves a bunch. I have Facebook, Currents, and Weatherbug set to refresh only every 4hrs. Automatic brightness on. With that, I'm having no issues going from 6am-7pm and still have about 20% afterwards. This is with 400+ texts, 20 emails outbound, and 150 minutes of calling, and lots of web surfing.
The Note 2 was my other choice, by I'm biased to Nexus devices now. Easier development with NO manufacturer involvement in OS updates. If the battery still scares you, Mophie makes a cool looking brick for MicroUSB that charges at 2.0a. $79, 4000mah. Toss in a backpack, and it's two extra full batteries.
Add me to the list of happy campers! N4 rocks and is the best device of 2012!!
Very happy. just want those few bugs squashed. which I believe are just that. bugs
Im a proud owner of a flawless Nexus 4, i have no issues at all with the device... Glad i bought it

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with a working N4. It seems the QC at LG is subpar and there were tons of devices that left the factory not in pristine condition. But then again, the device was half the price of a non contract similar device so they had to cut corners somewhere. It's nice to finally leave Sprint behind with it's terrible data speeds. Yes the N4 isn't LTE, but it's sure faster on ATT's HSPA then Sprint could ever be so I'm satisfied with the data speeds.
Hey all,
I am kind of curious as to what everyone's opinions of the one are.
I currently have the dual core Telstra one xl, considering upgrading to the one.
One areas would I expect to see the biggest differences? Gaming? Video etc.
I have read reviews etc but it would be interesting to hear some feedback from peoplle using the device daily.
Thanks in advance

Try one at the shops. I think some Vodafone shops have them already. They are pretty awesome. Screen is amazing, build is way more premium than the One XL and the speed is very fast. Camera seems great, Sense 5 seems better than Sense 4 but still an acquired taste (I prefer stock Google AOSP look'n'feel).
I am very torn. I wonder how much I can get if I sell my One XL?
For me it's worth upgrading.
It depends. its somewhat of a major update.
New unibody design. 1080p vs 720, dual core vs quadcore, boomsound, and a new camera.
Let's not forget 2 GB of RAM for multitasking. And a much better GPU. Plus its probably the most beautiful phone ever built.
Kinda sad that I won't be getting one after all due to the delayed deliveries in Poland
Then again, I think I'm starting to fall in love with my new Note 2's screen....
I am upgrading from an X+ which is not as big a jump but just can't pass up this one as it is very cool.
MG
I started off making fun of the One’s design. Speakers on the front?! No multitasking button?!? What is this abomination?!?! I’ll keep my One XL, thank you very much!
Then reviews came out…and more…and more…and I began to appreciate the beauty of the design.
Yesterday I went to an AT&T store and they didn’t have a floor model, but they had one in the back they were willing to show me. I spent about 10 minutes with the device, and I was sold. At one point I had both the One and the One XL in my hand, and my One XL felt immediately dated – like a plastic-based prototype of the phone HTC really wanted to make. I gave in and pre-ordered before I left the store.
I’m not the kind of person who upgrades phones every year. I went from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4 to the One XL…but 10 minutes with the One and I just knew I couldn’t pass it up. Between the almost-compromise-free feature set and the Apple-esque build quality, I could see this phone lasting me for 2 years, if not longer.
Of course, it’s quite possible I’m just gushing because I haven’t spent enough time with it, and reality will shatter my current opinion. I guess I’ll know for sure in 10 days.
If nothing else, my One XL will live on as my "mess around with" device, and knowing HTC's (and AT&T's) history of updates, I'll probably be running Android 5.0 on it before I'm running it on my One.
can anyone tell me how the ONE handles the multitasking? specifically when switching between apps from the recent apps window? I remember when i had the ONE X it was one of the reasons I took it back and got the S3. But I do remember the one x had the best view of screen in outdoor direct sunlight and best sound I have ever heard from a phone when plugged into my car radio.

This is what I saw from my relatively brief experience in the store. Coming from a One XL, I knew what to look for, and it didn't seem like apps were refreshing in the background during active usage the same way they do on the One XL - it only seemed to happen when the phone has been idle for a long period of time.
Still, I'd need more than 10 minutes of usage to say for sure.
Thanks for taking the time to respond

I was on PA ROM but went back to stock rooted n my battery life is good. I'm not on it all the time gaming or streaming so maybe that's why and I usually get about two days per charge. Let it drain out all the way and fully charged maybe? That's what I do anyway.

I just got it yesterday and am very happy with it. By far the best phone I've ever used. The only issue I have with the phone is no LTE, as I came from a device with LTE. But being that all I really do is text and use a couple apps it isn't too big of a deal. It just sucks downloading stuff at like 500kb/s compared to 2mb/s when I had my SGS2 Skyrocket.
Overall though, taking LTE out of the equation, this phone is amazing.

mate, my PC internet is 1mb/s  so don't worry about it, just think of us in the rest of the world and you'll feel better :good:
Very happy with my N4. Running SaberMod with latest FrancoKernel nightly (.156) and TouchControl... Excellent. Smooth, and stuff, no bloatware
Best bang for my buck!
best phone ever used.
The N4 is one the best development and fun device to have on XDA!
i would hope that anyone who both takes the time to register a forum account here at xda and also owns a nexus 4, would love the ever living **** out of the device. after all, we're all here 'cause we're android geeks who love to tinker, and what better phone is there for us?
Yes very happy and satisfied with nexus 4, got mine 2 weeks ago. I currently have the latest Miui V5 on it. and Miui Franco kernel. i get 2days on battery, texting, music, games, barely watch videos. And plus the camera takes some nice shots. Better than Evo 3d camera..
Well I'm happy that your happy. I'm sure this is because you have seen the light, I have and it is good. Running PA and like the halo. Trying to think of more sweet things todo with n4. I'm sure there's a forum somewhere for it as probably was with this but then I gotta back out and do searches. Easier to create a new thread me thinks. Anyway guy walks into a bar.. Ouch

Best android phone I have used, the naked google without "Sense" and "Touchquiz" is for me the best.

of course why I got N4? Beast of a CPU, flashing, 100% Stock Android (until I flashed CM), all the possibilities

Nexus 4 is awesome. I was lucky enough to order one the day it came out. Running PACman ROM with stock kernel.
I got mine one week ago and I'm VERY PLEASED. it is a great gadget and it is more than i really use in my daily life, it is a monster :victory:
Now that this phone has been out for over a year, does anybody have any complaints?
How's the battery life?
Has it, or does it ever randomly freeze?
Anything you hate about it now that you've been using it for some time?
Lastly, I found this phone and the LG Optimus G new for around the same price range, the Nexus 4 being around $20 more expensive. Aside from the removable SD card on the Optimus G and LTE support, and the potentially removable battery on this phone, are there any other differences? If you had a choice to go with either phone once again, and neither the SD card, LTE support, nor battery being an issue in making your decision, which would you go with, and why? I believe the only other difference would be the Android support, with the Nexus 4 running 4.4.2, and the Optimus G running 4.1.2.
In other words, my friend is stuck between making a decision between the two and doesn't know which to go with.
Thanks!
Dude they look like almost the exact same phone. The only difference I can see on GSM Arena is that the Optimus has a (market dependent) 13 mp camera vs Nexus's 8mp subpar camera. If it did have a 13mp camera I would get the Optimus. Otherwise as bad as I hate to say it I just can't make myself get another phone at this point. I realllly want an LG G2 but it's like having a car that's paid for that you've become comfortable with and you got it like you like it. Although there are other models that may be a little bigger and get a little better gas mileage and have the navigation built into the steering wheel. Lol. My phone gets phenomenal battery life, can be upgraded to 4.4.2. Will continue to get a fair amount of developer support. Has a super cool glass back. I mean I think it's a good decision. I would probably never get another phone if I had a better camera... Tough choice.

Yeah, they're essentially the same phone. That's the reason for the troubles, because the differences are so minor, I was just wondering if there was anything bigger than what was posted on a web a year ago.
If your friend doesn't care for LTE or more storage, then nexus 4 would be better. Running latest android version, lots of development support, looks fabulous with the glass back, running very smooth, battery is average but hey, this is a smartphone mate. of course it would gobble down battery fast (still I got almost 7 hours of sot with 22 hours of usage, not very average ain't it? ) But then, it depends on your friend, if he's not so much into rooting or updating android version, many of the nexus advantages would be nothing to him.
The screen will go at some point. Mine just did after 14 months. I was lucky. Some had theirs go funny at 6 months and LG refused to change the screen under warranty. My soft keys don't work in landscape. Only solution is a new screen. Save yourself the headache and buy something else.

Just to clarify, which screen will go out? The Nexus 4?

The performance and the display are excellent.
Battery life is ok.
But the LTE and the really bad camera make me consider an upgrade.
I would recommend to get a newer device.
About a year old now and this is still the sexiest phone. True there are better options but for the price it is still a tough one to beat. Zero issues with it, was my wife's at first, she broke the LCD a few months in (not the phones fault as she has broken half a dozen phones now) so she moved to wp8 (great for her) I took the n4 and swapped a new digitizer/LCD in it and it has been flawless for 8 months or so now.
I have played with a lot of the newer phones and this one still competes great, yes the camera could be better but for my purposes it is still perfect, oh and did I mention sexy as hell?
