So I recently used CF Auto-Root to root my S4, and looking through ROMs I'm finding that a lot of them need to be flashed on a system that's been deodexed, and I'm pretty sure mine is still odexed considering it has the odex files with the .apks. I have no clue what this means, and I don't exactly know what I can do to deodex my phone so I can flash one of these ROMs (specifically ForceROM 2.3).
So I'm wondering what I need to do to get everything in order to play with the pretties xP Any help appreciated ^_^
The ROMs you want to flash are either odexed or deodexed so no need to deodex your system before flashing.
Just make a backup before you flash and have fun.

The OP for ForceROM said it needed to be on a deodexed system, which is what confused me xD Possibly misread something somewhere. Thanks!! Excited to play with it

I haven't looked lately but I am pretty sure what you flashed is the stocked leaked rom. If it is it is not deodexed. I believe the themes require a deodexed rom. Try one of the custom roms and then make sure any theme you flash is compatible with froyo.

Next time can you keep questions about a theme in the themes thread instead of creating a new thread. I'm one of the devs of mysterious beast and I would like all questions in my thread.
sounds like to me your not running a deodexed rom. All themes require to be deodexed at the moment. Theres a stock deodexed rom floating around that was done by ACS. All the custom roms are deodexed. You would need one of these to run a theme

thats cause of the battery mods in some of the themes. in order to restore succesfully you would have to flash the rom and then do a restore from cwm
I have the same problem, but I am running Epic Experience v2.0.06 on Stock Kernel. I don't really get any FC's, but everytime I get a text, missed call, or VM, my phone will soft boot. I am running a GingerBread Theme too.
I want to run the stock rom which is odexed. This mod is a must. I will donate to the person that puts this together for me.

That version is (deodexed). I need odexed, but thanks.

Yeah, I don't think that's possible, b/c I'm pretty sure you have to deodex to decompile and recompile the framework.apk an other system apks that need modding... may be wrong though.
Why not run a deodexed system?

In that thread someone mentions that nottach did a 1% Mod for a HKTW version of Android that would supposedly work with odexed systems, but I never actually found any posts verifying it. There was a link included, so it's there if you're inclined to look.
I was looking for this mod for an odexed system too, but in the end I just decided to flash a deodexed system.img. Since I was trying to keep my phone as "stock" as possible I was reluctant, but with how many mods are designed for deodexed systems it just seemed like the best thing to do.
You can always flash a recovery from an odexed backup, which I have done with no issues.
Hi all,
Just want to share this mod to odex your rom. Had been using it on my samsung note. Tested and running fine on my new S3.
Thanks to the developer and all credits to him!
Please read and refer to his thread for details

Well it gives me better battery life and makes the phone faster. Only downside is that u can theme the phone.
I always install the mods and themes i want then odex the rom after. Anyway im just sharing.

I must be the only one to not notice any major speed differences between odex and deodex. I mainly run a deodex rom because I don't wanna have a gazillion .odex files in system app and system/framework. Oh, that and being able to theme as I wish.
Deodex is useless. There are some websites about this. If you need to theme the Rom you just deodex the needed files to theme them and you keep the advantage of odexed Rom.
this is a great idea, but it does not work on wanamlite 3.7
there are others options to odex a deodex (and very customized) rom ?
thanks

Im using ronne's lite rom. Runs perfectly fine here.
I usually install all the mods and apps i wan and then use tb to convert some apps to system apps and run odex me.
But do be aware that some apps dont work having converted to system app. Like the xda app. Because i was using this mod ever since i got my previous phone note 1 i know what apps to convert.
And u wont be able to mod your phone after using this. Im not a modaholic and its like a standard procedure for me to use this mod after setting up a new rom.
Personally i feel the phone is faster and slightly improves battery life. Of cos its just my personal opinion. Cheers

is there a tool that can take from clockworkmod files and copy to sdcard then deodex files and move to system
I think that this is the wrong section to post this question, but anyways, I'm pretty sure it's not possible to do that.

Deodex your ROM without using pc:
Make a flashable zip of your deodexed system apps and framework!!
It works for me!!
Use the updater script to delete your .odex files and overwrite deodexed apps and frame to your system...
Voila!

Step one, read beerdroids "how to" guide on root, flash, etc. Look in the general forum

OK guys I've learned a lot in the past 12 hours. I appreciate all of the help. My question, is it easier just to download cyanogenmod on the rom manager app than downloading it thru the website?

I would just go to the thread in the Original Development section on this forum, follow the direct link and download the latest nightly - I have experience with other devices but, after die research on here, bought my S4 this evening and had CM running ten minutes after I got home. You can do it too!

Good deal, you graduated No seriously, download it direct from the site. This insures a good copy. Very easy setup, so go for it.

Now as far as any OTA updates i want/need, what is the protocol in getting them?
You can't get them on a custom rom
I forget what I read on a custom recovery and rooted--getting older--
I think you need to go back to stock--someone can confirm
I haven't Googled that yet either
There were some rootkeeper apps that were used on my other phones, don't know what works here
I never took OTA's after rooted and flashing my other phones as dev's seemed to have updates faster than my carrier

Generally, the newer firmware versions that get pushed out as OTA updates will be incorporated into custom Touchwiz roms, such as ShoStock and Mint Jelly. However, if you flash CyanogenMod or any other AOSP-based rom such as SlimBean or AOKP, OTA updates will be completely meaningless. It's a different world altogether.
Either way, my advice is the same: Don't mess with OTA's. At best, they could give you the same features as a custom rom. At worst, they could kill the Loki exploit and lock your bootloader for good.
