Transforming a Nandroid Backup to a flashable zip via clockwork recovery?

I have a friend over on the east coast that isnt following direction as well as one would hope and is a little scared about rooting his phone and getting it to be as good as my X is. I finally got it rooted for him but he is freaking out about using a clean nandroid backup i sent him and dumping it in the correct directory for nandroid backup and restore giving him a clean image of my phone...
I had assumed that this would have been the easiest method but it got me thinking.
Could i rename my nandroid back up folder the ending tree folder that holds the .android_secure.img, cache.img, data.img, nandroid.md5 and system.img ... like clockworkmod/backup/2010-11-25.05.05.13 could i just pop all those files into a .zip named whatever and direct him to clockwork recovery and flash zip from sd card?
Or could someone point me into a direction on how to accomplish that? I think i would like to also do it for my self and upload it to my dropbox account for later access or to share with friends.
I noticed when i opened like the latest rubix rom that it didnt contain any files similar to that so im curious if its possible.
Also one last question, while i have your technicle mind at attention..
Could someone answer me, in Titanium backup it gives you the option to create a update.zip, then it gives you two radio buttons one says titanium backup will be installed as user application and then System application.
I know that the whole create update.zip thing is for flashing it to the rom from recovery. But what is the diffrence bewteen those two options. What is best and what is the diffrence..

One drawback of giving him your nandroid backup is that it contains YOUR gmail account with your contacts, facebook account (if applicable), among all other sorts of your personal stuff. In my past experience, you can ADD a gmail account to the phone, but you cannot get rid of the primary/original account so he will have both on there. Other than that, it actually does work though (at least it did on the Droid 1).

Wipe your data and make a nandroid before you reboot and sign in. that way your accounts won't be tied to it

Your friend - with all due respect if he's having that much trouble with something this simple I really don't think he should be screwing around with root access in the first place. If he has that little understanding of administrator-level access, why on earth does he even want root? He won't even know what to do with it.
Not trying to be harsh, just trying to understand.
Flash Nandroid - NO, don't do it! I'm sure it can be done, but not in the way you described.
Titanium Backup - system apps reside in /system/app as opposed to /data/app. The only real difference is that system apps will still be there after you do a factory reset.

If your going to let your friend flash a nandroid, then you need to remove your gmail and social applications. If you wipe data as mentioned above you'll lose all non-system apps...basically everything you've installed and set up, which is most likely what you're trying to give him. The only way I can think to make this work is to first create a backup for your use, then remove everything that requires you to log in with adb, then replace all of the apps you removed (extract the rom your running and look in system/app for them - data/app apps can be installed from the market). Reboot the phone to verify that all of your accounts are gone, create the new backup and send it to him. Then flash the backup you made for your use.
The easiest way to give him "your set up" would probably be to make a full backup with titanium (not an update.zip). Backup all user apps and system data. Go into the titanium folder on your sd card and delete all files except the .apk files that have anything to do with gmail or social apps. Have him flash the same rom, copy your titanium file to his sd card, and restore all apps and system data to his phone.

[Q] Phone.apk lost, trying to reinstall [SOLVED!!]

Okay, this is the 2nd time this has happened.....my phone.apk has disappeared from my phone, EC09.
Last time I just blew everything up and started over. This time I refuse to do that. I'm using Dialer One, so at the moment, things are not urgent. But I do want my touchwiz dialer back.
I've backed up the app with Titanium Backup on a previous nandroid backup, and it will not restore the phone app on my current ROM. I've also tried using ADB and the install command, and I get a "install parse failed no certificates" error message.
Anyone have a way to solve this problem for me?
UPDATE: I found a valid backup from TiBu that worked for me and another user. Download this zip, unzip the files into your Titanium Backup folder on your SD card. Scroll through the apps/backups in TiBu until you find [Voicemail] Dialer 2.2.2, restore app+data. Should be good to go!

This seems to be a common thing happening on this phone. This also happened to me when i was running complete stock no root a while back and I had to do a hard reset to get it back. I don't know what the apks issue is but its happening to a lot of people and so far the only way to get it back that I know of is to do a hard reset.

I also lost dialer on EC09 awhile back, gave up trying to fix. Just have also just been using Dialer 1. Odd thing with it though is I had to dial 911 and it wouldn't let me, every time inputted numbers it would bring up my contacts and wouldn't let me dial it.

Well I guess it's mildly comforting to know I'm not alone with this problem. I know there must be a way to get the dialer back without a hard reset. I just got tired/overwhelmed of researching exactly how Android handles apk's and how ADB works.
I have the apk. I just haven't been able to get it on my phone properly.

Well, the problem has been solved.
Apparently the backup I made of the phone app through Titanium Backup was corrupt. I had an entire backup of my SD card on my hard drive and I tried restoring the phone app from that. Titanium Backup restored it fine.
I couldn't understand why TiBu would be unable to restore an app IT backed up! Apparently it wasn't unable to!
If anyone wants the three files created by the backup, I can zip them up and post them.

If not to much trouble I would like a copy of them, as my Tibu won't restore either and tried another method offered here somewhere without success and just gave up.

Nevermind I see it's resolved.

Okay since this is zip I believe it just gets installed through recovery, am I right. So when I try it just hangs at installing, had to pull battery to restart phone.

I'm sorry for not explaining things with the link. That is the three files that Titanium Backup creates when backing up an app. I zipped them into one file. Unzip them into your Titanium Backup folder on your SD card, and restore the phone app through Titanium Backup.

Well I give up, just going to stick with Dialer 1. Took zip, extracted and moved to Tibu backup folder, went into Tibu, didn't show up in apps list went to batch and reinstalled from batch mode and still nada. Tibu shows as installed but not there. Under application settings it shows 0.00 for file size, that can't be right, so guessing did not install.

No need for any flashing!!!
Just go into a file explorer (like root explorer) and go into system/app/ and look for the app the has disappeared and hold it down, a menu will pop up and go down to permissions.
there will be 3 columns. The first one should have all 3 boxes checked, the second column should only have the top box checked, and the last column should have all boxes UNCHECKED.
After you do that press ok and there should be a pop up saying that permissions were changed!
And that's it! Your app should be back! If not, try installing it after u change the permissions by pressing down on the app until u get a pop up and press open with, then pick apk handler, then just install, and it should work!

Killyjoy's suggestion may very well work, but the file you downloaded from me might not have been the right one.
I have two trios of files that came from Titanium Backup when I was trying to restore the phone app. One trio has the word "phone" in it...and that's what you downloaded from me the first time, the other trio has the word "dialer" in it, and that is here
My initial instructions should still apply. Unzip these three files into your Titanium Backup folder of your SD card. Look in TiBu for "[Voicemail] Dialer"
You should see that there is a backup from 4/06/12. If the app shows as installed on your phone, I'd uninstall it (MAKE SURE you see that TiBu recognizes a backup exists first) and then restore the app+data from the backup.
That's how I got back up and running......if you want to give the TiBu method one more go.

Sorry, I just browsed thru the comments real quick and thought I saw the word flashing in there lol. But this way definitely works, I lost my phone apk. 2 times after installing tb101 mod and I got it back both times.
I figured I'd post some screencaps so you guys could maybe understand what I was saying a little bit better.

Checked permissions they were right, used apk installer but get message saying not installed.

If using Tibu to reinstall back up, I had to verify back up was there then uninstall in TiBu and then reinstall.

Ok so I think I've got it figured out.
You delete the app that's missing out of the system
/app folder.
Copy and paste the new app into the system/app folder.
And then check the permissions and then reboot and it should be there.
Note: the app that your replacing needs to be from the Same ROM. So just download the rom your using and extract the app and go from there.
So next time your app goes missing, try this method and let me know if it works.

Cant delete CWM backups from internal SD Card

Need some help here:
I need to delete some of the backups I made with CWM recovery. I already have them backed up onto my PC, but need to delete them to make some room. For some reason I cant.
Ive tried root explorer, es file explorer, and my PC. Im unable to change the permissions of the files, and if you look at the pics I attached youll see they have some strange permissions, but I cant change them.
I am able to move the files anywhere else in the sd card folder, rename them, but no matter what I cant delete them. And when I try from my PC it shows them disappear, but they are actually still there.
If there is a way to format the sd card folder I will, but thats not an option in the settings, or CWM. Can someone please help me out here? This is really frustrating me. Thanks

I posted this in the other thread, but figured I would do so here in case other people needed the "fix".
Ok, so some good news and some bad news.
The good news is, I was able to put together a flashable zip that WILL DELETE the entire CWM backup directory from the sdcard. It is available here:

You simply need to flash it via CWM. Easy peasy. I confirmed that the directory/files were all removed, AND the storage space is now available for other files (I checked df before and after).
The bad news is, before attempting to delete the directory, I first tried changing the permissions (recursively) to see if that was a better "fix" for this problem. Unfortunately, even with the directory 777 and the files 666, I still could not manually delete them through the system. Which means, whatever bug is causing this problem is much more severe than a file/directory permission thing.
In any case, until the CWM developer can figure out a way to fix this bug, at least we have a way to manually remove the backups and get our storage space back.
The script in the zip is very simple. It just does a recursive delete on /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup.

[Q] Titanium Backup cannot choose SD card?

Verizon S5 with towelroot and Safestrap nandroid.
I'm trying to use Titanium Backup for the first time. I'm watching the video on the Play Store page. The guy says to go to MENU>Preferences>Backup folder location, and then click "DETECT!". When I do, it shows a progress bar and then a message "No backup location was found." I can click back and navigate to the SD card, but it doesn't show up as a backup location.
I'm hoping to eventually use Titanium Backup to remove some bloat and freeze some Samsung/Verizon processes, but I want to get the backup happening first. Every little step causes frustration because things never seem to happen the way they do in the instructional videos.
EDIT: Also, under Help, there is an option to "Upgrade Superuser". This takes me to Superuser app on the Play Store. I already have SuperSU. Do I need to install Superuser?

You need to do sd card fix / hack. One of the security features in kit kat was to limit 3rd party apps ability to write to the sd card. I believe the latest wanam exposed has the ability to change this, there is also an app in the play store sd fix, or you can just modify the file manually. I can't find the thread right now to do the manual edit, but that is what I did and titanium recognizes it now.

Interesting. I installed "SD KitKat Fixer". I tapped 'FIX' and it says "FIXED: Apps should be able to write to removable sdcards.". However, Titanium Backup says "This folder is not writable" for every folder on the SD card.

Bumping an old thread......Currently stock rooted on NI2. I would like to put a ROM on my phone but would like to backup some of my apps using Titanium backup. In the Titanium backup app the Backup directory shows "not available". Going into preferences it shows that every folder in the device is not writeable. If I click DETECT, it shows no backup location was found. I tried to change the platform.xml to read/write using a couple different file explorers but I am unable to save the changes. I have tried to use the app as discussed above and rebooted the device but sill no dice. It seems that this problem started after I tried Rick's ROM for a very brief time and then flashed my nandroid backup on to the device. I would really like to change the ROM on this thing so any help will be appreciated.

Try to unmount and remount the card. If that doesn't fix it do a factory data reset from the settings menu and a advanced wipe from safestrap. Then restore your back up. If all else fails remove your card, back it up to your PC and format it and restore. I can assure you my ROM has nothing to do with it. I've installed many ROMs multiple times and re rooted many times without one issue with the extSD card. I even switched phones without ever formatting it. I hope this helps you.

It's not only the card that I can't write to, it's the entire device. Every folder in titanium backup says "This folder is not writeable". I can try the factory reset then reinsatalling a backup. The crazy thing is that I just used SMS Backup and Restore to backup all my SMS/MMS and it created the backup to the external storage.

It's possible you need to remount the /system filesystem rw (read/write) before you can edit /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml. Apps like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (with root enabled) do this automatically, but depending on the editor they spawn, it may not be able to re-save the file. I followed:

and used Root Browser with the RB Editor, and was able to edit and save platform.xml. Don't forget to reboot after making changes. This made Titanium Backup much happier.

Thanks for the tip. There were several other things that did not work. Widgets, voice mail, ring tones, the list goes on. I un-rooted my phone and everything works again. When I did root the phone, it was kinda wierd. It never showed that I was on NE9 after using Odin to get to NE9 from NI2.

Any way to get file from non-rooted G5 Plus using PC?

There's a file I need from my phone, but I cannot access it as it requires root and my device is not rooted and never has been. When I read rooting guides they all state to do a wipe. Is there any way to get the file from my phone using my PC even if my phone isn't rooted?

Not sure by your vague description, but do a search of QPST and its sub program QFIL as it is Qualcomm's set of tools for development and working with their chipsets.

My question is, is there a method using my pc to access the file even if my phone is not rooted? And if so, what is that method? I'm asking if my PC can get root access to files on my phone even if my phone is not rooted.

I'm not sure where it's located. I was given this info from Roboform support. It's a password manager.
"By default it would be RoboForm/_user-data.rfo on your device if you have root access, the folder location itself varies from device to device."
With FX File Manager I can find two Roboform related folders, but access to both is denied without having root. Their locations are:
System/data/app
System/data/data

If you're looking for wifi passwords, and it sounds like that's what you're after, you're not going to be able to get them without root access.

I already stated what the file is. It's my own user data from the password manager app Roboform. I need the file to import the data into the PC version, as my user data was lost. As long as I don't sync the phone app, I still have all of my 211 site logins/passwords saved... but there is no way to recover the data to the PC app without getting that file.
Isn't there a PC app that can create a 1:1 image of everything on my phone, and then another that can open the image to view the files? Or a way to root without having to lose the data in the process?
I'm just trying to avoid having to manually input every single one of my logins & passwords manually, but will if there's no other way. I've gotten about 40 done so far but quit until I got an answer here.

in your first post. As I posted, QFIL can dump the whole chipset, but getting it to work, and then extracting right file with a hex editor, is pretty involved.

Another option is to try using ADB backup. If the app allows itself to be backed up, then you may be able to extract the relevant files from the backup.

Hey, just use Moto lenovo software assistant and back up the file into pc and then access with your computer.

You are not vague... simply wrong!
You need the data belonging to an app so if the phone is not rooted and the app isn't a system app their data is under /data/data/APPNAME/
The Lenovo Assistant does an adb backup,nothing more and nothing less.

Zero idea what you're trying to say there. You also quoted me as saying something that another poster said. What exactly am I "simply wrong!" about? I stated that I can see the location of the folders on my phone, but that I cannot enter into the folders because I do not have root access. "Access Denied". Someone told me to use Lenovo MOTO Smart Assistant, so I figured they were telling me to simply use it to browse my phones directory and copy the file to my computer. Naturally, if I browse my phone with the app it does not give me root access, thus I am unable to even see data/app/APPNAME or data/data/APPNAME. The person who suggested it did not mention anything about using it to create a backup. You stated that it "does an adb backup,nothing more and nothing less." which is completely incorrect. You're the one that's wrong here. The assistant does NOT do a complete adb backup. In fact the only things you can backup using it are contacts, sms, pics, music, video, and apps. Plus it does much more. Not "nothing more and nothing less" as you stated.
Roboform creates folders in the system partition. Are you telling me I'm wrong about where the folders are located? Wrong that the assistant app doesn't even let me see system folders? Wrong that it can't be used to create a full backup? Wrong that it does more than let you back up non-system files? Because I'm not wrong about a single one of those things.
Soooooooo. That brings me to having a full backup using adb command line, but no way to extract it's contents. I tried this but the unpack feature does absolutely nothing & the main interface doesn't even see my phone. Not to mention the install is bug ridden. It creates folders in the wrong locations & with the wrong names, so I needed to manually rename & move files because the app would crash trying to find files needed to run. https://github.com/camalot/droidexplorer
Is there any way to easily unpack the backup? If not I'll just give up on this and manually input the remaining 100+ passwords one by one from my phones screen to my PC. LoL.

I don't think so! No app modifies /system, it requires root access to do.
Your data is in /data/data/roboform folder.
Do the backup:

Didn't need the first link. I said I already have an adb backup. You still didn't tell me what I was previously wrong about. The file locations? I'm going by where FX File Manager tells me it's located, which says System/data/app. Does it really matter anyway? I see them, I just can't open them without rooting & once I get the extracting stuff set up I will know where to look for them. A 100% technically (in)accurate location name was irrelevant to even point out as being "not vague, just wrong".
