Well i own a nook tablet. and i was wondering if i could install a nook color rom without causing any trouble with by device since the nook tablet devs are kind of .....slow. But i should not say anything cuz i probably don't know 1/1000 of the things they know.
but anyway, will it work.
hint:i want to install the regular cyanogen mod but it says nook color. not tablet
also if you could give me a link on how(not mandatory)
thankyou
For now at least, the most you can do is root your Nook Tablet. It is not the same as the Nook Color, and the bootloader is locked, which limits what can be booted, unlike on the NC. I bought my wife a NT and spent weeks working on this very same issue. You can do quite a bit with it, and it's very nice hardware, but it's not the hacker's toy the NC is. Your biggest issue will likely be the inability to use APPS2SD to free up space, thought you can load all the content you want on it.
EDIT: Where you really want to be asking questions are in the Nook Tablet forums. This is a good starting place.
No... why would that ever work?
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
@424aca 'fraid it isn't that simple. The hardware profile is similar on the outside, but not on the inside of the tablet.
And the devs are slow because a lot of the buzz about the NT is gone now, seeing as the NT is nowhere near as hackable as the NC is.
Basically it's locked down to prevent any serious hacking, and any workarounds possible have not been discovered due to the immense difficulty of doing so.
In this thread we will do the discussion of this ROM so we don't bother the developers anymore!
Sorry for this question, I am in good faith, but I want to understand if Drewis is developing this kernel alone or collaborating with the team CyanogenMod (or other). I guess the first hypotesis, but maybe they are sharing progress. Repeat, I am gratefully, it's only a curiosity

If I'm not mistaken, texasice, drewis and the rest of the evervolv crew are working on the new kernel alone.

Can anyone post a youtube of the newest version running with HWA to see how it compares with MIUI?
I am curious to see if it's worth installing...
Really appreciate it!!

I can tell you that the latest version is running pretty smooth for me, the UI just seems faster and I can run the Chrome Beta which I couldn't even load up using MeDroid. HWA even at this early stage is giving my N1 a whole new life.
Very promising ROM but far too buggy for me to leave MIUI for it. :/

I flashed the P9 release yesterday (my first ICS release)... pretty smooth in general, Quadrant scores are not far behind the scores I had with CM7.1 (998 with evervolv P9 VS 1039 with CM 7.1)...
Got the same issues as stated in the "not working" section, plus the clock crashes (to set alarms) but that could be just a question of wiping cache/dalvik again.
Coming from CM, I miss all the customizations options in this ROM. Dont get me wrong, texasice did a fantastic job with the ROM and kernel development, especially in figuring out the HWA part...
But I will surely try MeDroid Remix (as soon as it's new release with HWA comes out this weekend) to see what it offers... looking at samuaz's thread, it looks a lot more customizable and coming from CM, it might be just what I'm looking for.
I will surely donate to both texasice and samuaz as well for a fantastic job done on their part, otherwise, we'd be probably stuck with Gingerbread forever.
I know plenty of much newer phones than ours that don't have a mod that can run chrome properly.
That said, if people are playing around with older (more stable?) versions and want to give some of the reboot fixes a try, look up market id com.jrummy.sysctl.config to set the memory without the new kernel or messing with scripts.
A lot of the CM stuff you might be used to is available from other programs. I mostly miss the brightness hacking and night mode filters, but I found a separate program that can make my screen dimmer to use as a night mode. The way the notification toolbar works is slightly different too. And Trebuchet is nice, but not that much different that I can tell.
I have an issue with p4 through p9.
I used trackball wake on build p3 it worked like a charm, but now when I press the trackball, pwr or vol buttons, the soft buttons are lighting but the screen remains black, I have loaded p4, p6, p7, and p9. All Roms work fine initially and appear trouble free up until the phone goes to sleep. After the phone goes to sleep the screen won't wake no matter what I do.
I have tried several SD cards, tried to turn off wifi, tried to change swap sizes from none to 256.... Not sure what else could be causing this???
Any ideas anyone?

So I got my phone running on the latest p11 finally. It works great, has been running for days, no reboots, pretty fast and seems stable so far... AND battery life has been awesome!
What I found was the CWM recovery was jacking my sd card when I partitioned it. I tried 4EXT recovery and all has been well after that.
No obvious issues other than camera preview...
Sometimes while on call the mic stops responding.. People calling me are not able to hear me..
I'm running p11 and not facing any other issues except the known one like camera preview etc ...
Anybody else facing similar issue?
*le bump*
Please do not let this topic die.
New rom is out. I had problems with wifi. No work around seem to work. I wait till the next version which I believe or hope to be stable one. Have to thank texasice, the rom is super smooth. ;-)

i think he posted a rebuilt p12 in the thread. it might be on the op page by now.
I just installed p13 today, it seems to work fine. The interface is a bit sluggish in places, for example Google Play is quite slow, and buttons don't always respond immediately. Is that normal for this rom?

Thanks, I tried the 0314-kernel and got slightly better results in the Quadrant benchmark (1004 as opposed to 937). But it didn't make a noticable difference in interface responsiveness.
It's not dreadful, but just not nearly as good as FroYo. But I'm not gonna expect any better since this is just a community work-in-progress rather than an official release.
Hi,
(I already have experience with rooting and installing custom roms on my HTC desire.)
A colleague of mine will travel to the US in a few days, and we where thinking of having him buy and bring back two Kindle Fires from there.
I have a few questions about the feasibility of this, and would be very grateful for some info, to avoid spending .
The infos in this forum are very extensive, and it is very difficult to keep the overview (especially since things change so rapidly).
1. How well are the custom roms working at the moment? Are they ready to be used in actual work environments, or are they still too experimental for this?
2. I want a very minimalist rom, the vanilla Google experience (my favourite on the HTC was Oxygen ROM). Any recommendations? ICS would be great, but Gingerbread would be okay, too. Most important is stability.
3. When I will try rooting and flashing the devices that will take place in Europe. Could this cause problems? E.g., the Amazon Marketplace is inaccessible from here (blocks non-US IPs). I assume that wont matter, just wanted to make sure.
Thanks for your help in advance!

CM7 is nice. Completely stable. You'd probably like Barebones CM7. I was using Standing on the Shoulders of Giants CM7 ROM and loved it.
But...I really wanted ICS, so I flashed CM9. It's beautiful, and very stable, however due to no hardware acceleration (yet) you won't have flash and some games seem to not work.
With all that said, stick to flashing a CM7 Rom and you'll be happy, IMO.
Thanks for the responses.

And this also means no hi-res video support, right?
Or do is just need to have the right app for that?
right - allthrough you can do hi res video with software like mx player does
but this will result in low framerates (stuttering depending on the source) and high battery usage
Thanks again!
One more question: I just noticed the Kindle Fire has only one physical button (power). The Nook Color has at least a few more (Power, Home, Vol+, Vol-).
Is that an annoyance in everyday life on the Kindle? On my HTC I am kind of glad about the Home, Back, Menu and Volume buttons...
(We haven't yet made a final decision between Kindle and Nook.)
there are softbuttons for all this functions and i learned to live with it
in the meantime it is a bit strange for me when i take the gtab from my wife with the hardbuttons
no problem at all ...

Not gonna lie, the lack of physical volume buttons drives me crazy. Livable now that I have CM9, but if using CM7 the 'volume control' app/widget/whatever, is a good option.
The lack of physical buttons on the kindle fire is a lucky break for developers as ICS is built with soft buttons in mind for the major functions of the OS so the one button isn't really a big problem. If google decides to go back to relying on physical buttons in jelly bean then the kindles custom rom future will be up in the air. For now if I were you i'd stick with CM7 until the developers have a chance to perfect the new kernel they're working on that will allow for better graphics among many other improvements.
I bought and registered my Kindle while I was in the states and I haven't had any problems with it here in Europe. I used the stock ROM for a few months and was only able to access the US Amazon, though I'm American so I don't know how that will effect you.
As for the soft buttons, I didn't have any problems with it. I thought the KF's stock ROM organized it pretty well; it was really easy to access the volume and brightness controls. The only thing I didn't like was that the bottom task bar was really big and, although it shrinks when you have full screen on, I was still annoyed by it. CM7 doesn't have that problem, though as someone else mentioned, apps are necessary to comfortably access volume control.
To sumarize, I think it was worth getting. I'm happy with it.
I have Droid X, running stock .621, rooted.
I just got my wife an HTC One S, running ICS and I'm jealous.
Right now, I'm just waiting out the days until Verizon offers something worth using my upgrade on. Looks like that's still going to be at least a couple of months away.
In the meantime, I'd like to breathe some fresh life into my DX, but I don't want something buggy.
I need working GPS, Camera (video would be nice too), phone functions. I'd like to be able to install Swype. I'd like flash to work. Working bluetooth would would be nice. Maybe I could live without some stuff, but at least I'd like to know what I'd be getting into before I install something.
I don't care about (or even really want) themes, different fonts, additional lock screens, funky notification bar icons or anything like that. I'd be perfectly happy with stock ICS, if it wasn't buggy.
Does something like that even exist or because there's no official ICS for the DX, there are always going to be some major bugs/issues?
If there's something worth trying, I'll be happy to give it a go. I understand that I'll have to do a data wipe, what's the best way to restore my data after a ROM update? Do I just back up user apps and user app data with Titanium before the update and then just restore all of that after or is there a better/safer/easier way to migrate ROMs?
I do already have CWM installed, so, I think, I just have to boot up, get into the CWM menu and do the data/cache wipe and then load the ROM zip file to upgrade ROM, right? At least that's the general directions? Once I figure out exactly which ROM, if any, I'll ask for further help so that I don't screw it up.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Got some help in another forum last night and wound up installing Gummy ICS. I really screwed up the process and wound up having to SBF, but it was a good learning experience.
I'm truly stunned as to how much more responsive the phone is as compared to GB Stock. We'll see if it stays that way, but, right now, I'm thrilled.
Few little annoyances here and there, but my goal really was just to add a little live to an aging phone and give me a refreshed toy to hold me over until an acceptable upgrade phone becomes available.

Not really. ICS on the Droid X was just way too buggy for me. In addition to all of the non-working things that people will tell you, I had other issues. My browsing was very slow on some sites with javascript on. I suspect due to the lack of hardware acceleration on ICS. Also, my radio.com app would cut the feed off after about 2 minutes of audio.
After Gummy, I had also tried AOKP. Both are nearly identical.
I wound up with VXR (Vortex Reloaded) using the ICSish them. Very, very happy with it.
Not as fast as the ICS ROMS (those ICS ROMS just flew), but everything works 100% perfectly and it still did clear up some of the major issues I was having with stock (CPU pegging at 100% for long periods, dialer getting hung up not allowing me to make calls).
With the ICSish theme, it looks like I'm on ICS even.
The DX and ICS weren't made for each other (not unless they release ICS drivers ever). People who tinker a lot might just live with the bugs because it's fun and it sure is fast, but it wasn't for me.
This may be helpful to our devs to resolve the sluggish video performance in NOOK HD / HD+ (TI OMAP Chip):
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/galaxy-nexus-gets-new-life-with-updated-gpu-drivers/
The current video driver used makes demonstrates the sluggishness in video performance as shown here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/help/nook-hd-embarrassingly-slow-t2837028/post54587754#post54587754
Once updated, the Nook HD / HD+ should be able to demonstrate smooth video performance as the Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9, which uses the same TI OMAP Chip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=hUW6KARo8Y4#t=1164
Is this compatible with CM11?
I'm also curious about this...seems like it could fix a lot of the odd slugishness we see...
Thanks!
Definitely curious. Wanting to know what it would take to make a kernel that incorporates this even though I don't know how to do these things.

Just a thought that if the cm maintainers do bring L to the nooks, and if that required newer video driver, then they would or else there would be no L on the nooks. Otherwise, I'm not so sure they would spend the time to do so if it required too much work.
Course, there's always the thought of someone else doing it.
Bumping to show that I'm really interested
Going to look into it now. Syncing slowly but surely.
We have no cm-12 branch for these devices yet. ( or ever )
Not sure who's maintaining it these days. I'm going to look into the commits and see what can be used here. :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:

Busy with work and such, then had a baby a month ago. I'm up every few hours at night anyways so figured I might as well look into this.
About an hour into the build, it will probably finish but I noticed I'm missing some build patches to make things work, so it likely won't boot.
Using the HD more often lately, its smoother and more convenient, also the HD+ is setup playing lullaby tracks 24/7 so I just leave it be.
Just moved and between jobs and school, so maybe we'll see some lollipop love for this old gem of a tablet.
And yes mint 17 really improved cinnamon monumentally. Its been amazing so far.

Might have been better off trying to build off cm12 staging branch, not sure though, throwing errors about everything. I'll diff some things tomorrow possibly, see if I can at least get a nook build to finish, even if it won't boot.
No reason to anticipate a successful build though, it was looking pretty bad lol.

By the way, I tried the new slimkat. Head there, I think that there are some archives that the guy uploaded that might prove resourceful (I think I saw some "drivers" "OMAP" folders inside these archives. Also, the rom has a polished look, and I think we can infer that optimizations and updates to the graphic drivers are there). Dunno, certainly worth a try
Going to look into a few places I was directed to for some useful commits. Also digging through omapzoom I saw some things that could be useful to us. Going to have some coffee and do some reading about it now
