custom rom developement - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

strange their is no massive improvement in custom roms section as compared to HTC ONE. No more devs are taking intrest for our beloved s4. it's really strange. Waiting for some nice custom roms.............

not strange since the exynos version has closed drivers which samsung won't release so Aosp for it would be a pain but custom touchwiz Roms there will be a lot of these
as for qualcom one there seem to be more users but still not enough
so give this device some time and a 4.3 update and this place will be flowing with custom Roms and some nice kernels 2

I was wondering the same thing but then looked closely. A lot of the One's roms are based on stock with tweaks and stuff.. We still have all the aosp/aokp/cm etc roms built from the ground up for the i9505 at least.

Give it time, still a relatively new device. Runs well so far as it is. Should pick up once the GE edition is out, more so for the i9505 if based on same hardware. Although I for one prefer TW due to it's features, camera etc.

AOSP ROM's

It's taken me quite sometime to realise how much superior AOSP ROM's are in comparison to Sammy based ROM's, i first flashed Supernexus out of curiosity a few weeks ago and was blown away by it's speed and smoothness far far better than Sammy ROM's in every respect, i then went onto Liquid Jellybean which was even better especially the battery life but with a few minor bugs and no update as of yet but im sure it'll come at some stage, now im on blackbean which uses the same base as Liquid JB and amazing stuff indeed, the speed and smoothness is unrivaled, with more development it will only get better.
Previously ive had superb ROM's like CheckRom, Android Revolution and Omega which are all excellent ROM's in their own individual way but i doubt ill ever go back to anything that isn't AOSP now unless some serious development happens which i wouldn't be surprised on XDA, so what type of ROM's do people prefer for their Galaxy S3?
Totally agree mate!
Aosp ones are the best...
the only thing i wait is the official jb update so the aosp ones can get sources to built on and also to have the best sammy ones(comparable to aosp since it's jb) ever!
But until then, aosp all the way...
Aokp Liquid and Resurrection for new I use Samy base JB Dragon

I used to have a Captivate and ran only AOSP/CM/AOKP roms. I still have it (use it as an mp3 player) and it's awesome.
No on my i9300, I'm using Omega v11. I tried SuperNexus Build 1 and tried a couple of AOSP based rom. I haven't tried later JB roms because I'm concerned with the memory leaks and lack of tv out and stuff like that. The main difference I found is the camera. The Samsung Camera app is very, very good. It is, flat out, superior to the ICS/JB Camera app. Allshare, FM Radio, TV Out, seem usually to be unsupported on AOSP roms (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I think AOSP (and variants) roms are very good. UI is sleaker and they might be a bit more responsive, but I could appreciate a greater difference when I had a Galaxy S with a half baked Touchwiz on it that with the complete monster the i9300 is with a thought out, 3rd or 4th generation Touchwiz. I still use Nova Launcher, because it looks better to me, but I love Smart Stay, TV out is absurdly useful to play n64 games or so with an emulator and a ps3 controller and again, the camera.
I might go back to AOSP roms. I've been looking for a good theme for stock roms, but haven't found one that actually replicates the feeling. However, functionality wise, I think Samsung's Roms are superior.
Excellent thread....Aosp are very responsive and pretty slick....you can feel the new all the advantages of JB.....but as said by monoespacial, the tricks in TW such as smart stay and others are very useful...it'll will be great if one of our outstanding developers in this forum can bake a Rom based on Aosp JB including all the mentionned tweaks.......excellent forum and wonderful community.....thanks.
I've had two nexus phones so I love aosp, it's android perfection.
In saying that, I've found myself flashing Cm10 or supernexus or liquid because I was sick of tw but after a day or two I get sick of them, I always end up going back to tw roms, especially since the JB leaks, the latest one is near perfection.
Tw JB roms COMPLETELY de-bloated are pretty damn smooth and fast, right now I see no need for aosp roms.
There are too many handy features in the tw roms.

yeah
they are simple and fast, and can install kernel with oveclock
but:
-no wifi tethering (its important to me)
-some FC
-inferior camera app
-without some features, like smart stay, etc ...
I agree!! Those AOSP or AOKP are excellent in terms of speed and smooth-ness. It also somehow integrate to the Google products better. However, they are often very simple interface with nothing much..
Too bad at this moment, there are still bugs that can't be fixed.
In the future, I will just go and get the original Google Nexus phone... You'll get the latest update first hand and there are less bloatware installed
- Charles
Haven't tried other AOSP rom except CM. Can't wait for memory leak fix on CM10
aosp is fast and slick , i love it but there is no denying the fact samsung has improved the quality of their roms for s3..... aosp vs stock is always been a debatable question where aosp always wins. but with galaxy s3 roms samsung has progressed one step higher.
at the end of the day not only the speed that matters but also the releaibility and functionality...
advatanges of aosp:
* Your mobile is fast and clean.
* More room for multitasking with more memory available.
* Wide variety of themes to choose from.
* aokp and derivative of aosp roms are simply amazing
disadvantages:
* it just makes your s3 like any other mobile that runs aosp. No device specific functions.
* Inferior camera.
* you will never get some features .
hoping to see a bug free cmx soon...................................

I agree! I started off my rom flashing on a milestone2 and when I got cm7 on it for the first time, I was in love with it. Then I got a g2x which was stock gb all the way too.
Finally I get this sg3 which was a must have and wow, I have used cm 9,10, every other aosp and aokp rom but stock again has more stuff u can't get from others.
I adw, Nova, launcher pro but I just tw all the way. Suits my needs.
I guess the best thing about it is, we could always change it when need be!
sent from a galaxy far above and beyond an iDevice
I do like the AOSP / AOKP etc. roms due to their speed, clean base and an intuitive user interface, but some bad things keep me from going to them.
Annoying bugs:
More FC's
Bluetooth works bad with A2DP headphones - choppy sound, interruption etc.
Native USB Tither doesn't work
Overheating compared to stock roms
Some cool things missing from stock roms such as superior camera, video call, smart stay etc.
A lot of minor bugs
Just to respond to some posts (good replies by the way)some people mentioned an inferior camera, a third party camera app like Camera ZoomFX does the job nicely and is one of the best IMO.
I rarely use WiFi tethering although ill probably be using it for 1 week next week while i wait to change broadband providers, there ar emany third party apps that im sure will do the job there.
If some TW features could be implemented into AOSP it would be a win win situation, but with the speed and responsiveness and battery life so good im staying put, much and all as i like ROM's like CheckRom and Android Revolution (2 of the best Sammy based ROM's IMO) but after having AOSP on the dog and bone i couldn't go back.

true, it would be nice to have new touchwiz features in cmx btw whatever the 3rd party app you use you cant get near to the stock camera app which has fetures like hdr, buddy share and more and adding to the arsenal jb update brings "pause while recording" feature to the camera app. BUt sadly its the price we have to pay for the luxury of aosp
Yeah, I was blown away at the speed of AOSP, the one major disadvantage(in my eyes) is the current memory leak present.
I'm sure that in due time, the AOSP camera will get all those features present on the Sammy camera.
I guess the thing I miss the most from the Sammy ROM was the swipe left to message and swipe right to call. Very useful feature IMO.
can someone confirm if USB tethering works on AOSP?

Is custom 4.1.2 the best the S3 can achieve or have things moved on?...

I hope this doesn't come across as a "what's the best ROM" type thread as I'm certainly not intending it to be and hope to get some good discussion out of it. I'm not after people naming particular ROM's, I'd like to find out what general opinion is on how custom ROM's have progressed since our last proper stock release of 4.1.2 (not counting the botched 4.3 release) and how you feel custom ROM's based on later android releases have changed the usefulness of the Galaxy S3.
The android scene has changed a lot since the release of the S3 and having now had various 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3 and recently 4.4 builds running for a while (both stock and AOSP based) do you still think 4.1.2 based custom ROMs are the go to base for the best combo of battery, smoothness, performance, reliability and compatibility? Do you feel like any of the later android versions past 4.1.2 have really added anything you now couldn't live without, or do you put up with issues because they add more functionality than the 4.1.2 release ever could? Do you in fact think that later android version based ROM's actually perform better in every way than our last official release based custom ROMs of 4.1.2?
For my own personal opinion:
I distinctly remember having felt like I'd found a certain sweet spot on a certain well known 4.1.2 ROM with what was arguably the most popular custom kernel at the time. I was easily achieving 3.5-4 hour screen times and not having to worry about brightness, GPS, WIFI or sync availability. It seemed to run everything I could ever want it to do and it seemed to do it well. Pictures from the camera were amazing, apps across the Play Store were always compatible, it never seemed to run too hot, or feel sluggish, performance in apps were very good. Granted it wasn't perfect with the odd lag here or there, but I felt content with how the phone ran in every way.
Fast forward quite a number of months and I've since experimented with every build going, 4.2.2 leaked releases, 4.3 leaked releases, AOSP 4.2, 4.3 and now 4.4, you name it! Although I can without a shadow of a doubt agree that they've added a fluidity and smoothness (certainly in the case of AOSP) compared to 4.1.2 based ROM's, and they've added functionality and customization is every way I can think of, it always felt like it was at the expense of something. Battery life, camera performance, stock features, general reliability, incompatibility with apps, broken features or random reboots et. I'm not saying any of them were all of the above at once, but certainly not one ever seemed to be perfect. I've never quite felt like I've gotten back to that time I had with a custom 4.1.2 ROM and a custom kernel when things just...worked!
So then XDA S3 community, what has your experience been so far?

What roms are AOSP and what are CM ?

What roms are really AOSP ? i want those really smooth experience with no random reboots and non stable modifications. Those who are not cm based.
In my experience, the most stables roms are stock Samsung followed by custom ROMs based off stock ROMs.
With AOSP and CM, it really depends on the apps. in that some ROMs are stable with some apps but not others. Kernel versions also play a role in stability.
AOSP is the base, the backbone and Cyanogen is based on AOSP. However this doesn't necessarily mean that both of them are in line for their stability, I mean AOSP is stable as hell obviously, AOSP is how Google wanted Android to be, which you can find on Nexus phones, or Motorola ones, which are almost AOSP (except Motorola's own apps), and Sony phones too, but Samsung, HTC and LG decided to put their own skins.
Now I personally don't like TouchWiz, it's definitely significantly heavier than AOSP, and thus lags time to time, but at the same time its significantly more stable than the Cyanogen ports for Note 3. So if you want real AOSP experience then you will have to opt for Nexus or Motorola or Sony.
Well ... my depends on the hardware, too. Seen my note randomly crashing running stock rom. Got the motherboard exchanged twice which reduces the reboots. The
stagefright update disaster made me switch to cm 12.1 and this is the most stable rom (nightly!) for me so far. So I think there is no such thing as an answer to your question. It really comes down to the hardware in many cases, too. I know loads of 9005 owners who experience crashes on stock rom, me one of them. To me it seems the note 3 is a crashy phone by design. Good luck!

I have the sm-n900w8 and it's been very stable. No random crashes or reboots using stock KK and LP.

Exactly same here. With the OF3 ROM I hit my maximum up time ever, for over 21-22 days, if this is not stability, nothing is.

Which Rom is good for s4 I9505 and without problems!?

Plz guys help to find good Rom for my S4 and without problems
Every rom is great, just try them and read a little in the threads to find the one that fits you
I prefer that you should stick to stock-based Roms because they are more stable than AOSP, MIUI, etc. Every Rom has their sets of issues just as us humans, we are not perfect. We have to overlook acceptable problems such as occasional and minimal lags or delays, but not the significant problems such as wifi connectivity, bluetooth problems, cellular data/signal problem, FCs, quick battery drain, extreme overheating, and etc.
So there is this stock-based rom that I use, called Imperium Rom v.12 by Slim80 http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop/rom-imperium-ll-v1-0-t3046889 It is the most stable Rom I have ever used as of now and I like to make my S4 committed to it, not commiting adultery with other roms anymore. Don't limit yourself by flashing an AOSP-based rom. The reason is the bugs that come with these AOSP roms and limited features compared to what I have been using now. Perhaps S4 is really meant to stick with its roots, not in the roots of others. So I suggest that you stick with a Touchwiz-based rom because of the premium features that AOSP doesn't have such as the amazing camera features, multi-window, great keyboard, and many more. Let the S4 grow in its roots.
I hope I could have helped you decide.
Note: This will be time-consuming, all of the flashing, organizing, and many other things. This can make us forget and ignore the existing human relationship we have now with families, friend, and the people around us and most importantly , the relationship we have with our Creator. Time is short. So I hope this android development thing will not interfere with the real priorities we have now for it had scrambled mine. So best wishes in Jesus' name.
Dirty Unicorn 9.8 or CM 12.1 SnapShot
For me i prefer Imperium Rom V12... Im also using albe95 note5 rom but still nothing compares with the original modified stockrom.. no lags, no bugs, smooth.. and the coolness whenever i play games.. especially when i play nba2k16, the temperature of my fone never changes..
PhoeniX Rom v11.6
I use PheoniX Rom (v11.6). And I think this is the best rom you can found at this moment for the galaxy s4. I am a flashaholic, so I tried every (TouchWiz) rom I could found here. But always come back to PhoeniX Rom. It is full of features, so that xposed is no more necessary (for me). The Battery life is also very good for our old device and everything is running smooth and fast. I use imperium Kernel and never had any issue with this awesome rom.

Touchwiz Based Roms :

CM Based ROMS: Dirty Unicorn 9.8 or CM 12.1 SnapShot
But this isn'^t the correct section.

Albe95 Note 5 port and Imperium 12 are best that i have come upon.

Indeed Imperium is one of the best tw ll based custom roms. But the only thing I don't understand is why Samsung themed lollipop so bright, although we all know that amoled screens have a better battery life with dark pixels. This question really bugs me.

Can Imperium (and Albe for that matter) be made to be dark all the way, ie how 4.4 was?

It's simple: they don't care
Sammy lollipop firmware is way below kk in terms of battery life. Also has more bugs, lag, etc
Edit: I think this thread should be moved into right section...
I found stock to be great but front camera works horrible on all of them. Aosp and cm roms give you better quality images and most likely better battery life too
its either Stock 5.0.1 (which is what i am on) or Imperium rom

You must be high or something.. everyone knows that AOSP based roms have terrible camera apps and horrible image quality.. Samsung camera app is way better.. and this is the only reason I can't stick to AOSP.. besides it gets boring after a while!

[Q] Marshmallow roms stability

Hello, I would like to know how are the android 6 roms, especially aosp/aokp or cm?
I want to buy s4 but i need to know if there will be restarts, fcs or other things on custom MM roms in front of stock LP roms.
Thanks
Depends on what model you plan on getting.
Also, stability varies a lot from user to user.
I personally never have any issues with ROMs I use.
Hi there
I would say that Official Cyanogenmod 13 is a good choice or a more optimised one like JDC is a great choice. They are definitely stable and usable as a faily driver.
In terms of which S4 to buy... I would say hold off the American Carrier ones as they prove to be a pain when flashing custom Roms. I'd say the i9500 may not be the best option as though it has slightly better performance with its octa-core processor than the snapdragon ones, it doesn't have 4g capability which instantly makes the phone feel dated. i9506 seems good as it supports the LTE advanced and is faster than i9505, however the main drawback is the custom rom support is not as good as the i9505 model. Overall I would reccomend the i9505 model with Snapdragon 600 processor, LTE capability and the mass custom Rom support.
Please leave a like if this helped!
I would get I9505. Last I used CM on xperia x8, it was fast but had many random reboots and other problems. Since this I have used stock or stock based custom roms with almost no problems. Sometimes when I read about CM/aosp I still find random reboots posts but also posts presenting no problems. Thats why i am asking
