Reception question - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I.have had my s4 for a few days now, and it seems reception is not as good as my s3 was. I am sitting here and my wife's s3 has 4 bars of service, while my s4 has no bars... can anyone help?

If you have not updated your PRL and Profile yet from the house then should go ahead and do that. What modem/firmware are you on? MDC or MDL?
Also, just keep in mind that the signal bars on a lot of devices are not entirely accurate. I had an S3 before getting the S4 and my reception has been about the same but I didn't have both phones at one time to sit together and compare signal bars.
You need to find out the dBm strength to really know how strong the signal is and not go off the signal bars. Try using this on both phones: Network Signal Info and then compare.

I am mdl, I.also installed the program u recommend, and it's sayin -79. But my data is slow.. I have a airwave in my house from Sprint, could that be what's messing with my service??

Better signal unrooted

I bought my ns4g about a week and a half ago coming from a tbolt on Verizon. I got it at 8pm and had it rooted by 9. I immediately installed cm7 and have been using every nightly. My signal was horrible. I had nothing at work and barely one at home. It also would barely hold a wifi signal even when laying the phone right next to my router. I've updated my profile and manually put prl 60679 on the phone and nothing improved. The only time I could get 3g was using the Verizon hybrid prl ( I don't have 4g here). I called sprint and updated the msi? And the lady said I was in great coverage at work and good at home. The signal was so bad in 4 ours of the phone sitting in my pocket doing nothing I lost 50% battery everyday. So this morning I unrooted to take the phone back to sprint for an exchange. I've been using it stock for about an hour and now wifi is good even outside my house and I get 2-3 bars most of the time. Is there any reason why this would be? I have owned about 90% of Verizon's android phones so I'm not new to this, I've just never seen this kind of difference between stock and rooted. I think I will wait and see if it stays like this or gets worse now and switch to the 3d if it is still bad. I switched to the nexus s because I love plain android, butit was so bad before I couldn't even make phone calls or send text unless I got lucky and it would connect.

the only thing i know on the subject is i left my phone unrooted for a couple of days. never noticed a difference after rooting. seems to be many conflicting reports on signal issues when it comes to the nexus. i have generally lower signal (3g 4g wifi) than my evo. really hope its software related so i can get a fix.
Rooting doesn't affect the phone's radio.
Maybe the ROM was bad?
ive been watching my signal strength for a day and its usually around -86. my evo was always -90 or more
It could be the rom I just don't get it. I've never had a problem with cm7. I'm going to root and fund it stock rooted and see then maybe go with something else

damn i like soju 2.6 too. oh well stocks not bad either. i see theres 4 kernels to chose from and 2 are experimental
ok so i flashed my "out_of_the_box" back up and updated prl and profile and my status numbers are the same. i did notice tho that with soju 2.6 i was on evdo rev 0, and now back to stock im on rev A
now wtf? after i flashed a netarchy kernal (stable bfs 2.3.4) im on rev 0 again. what going on here?
Here's what I'm gauging my claim on. I live in a basement apartment so I get awful service anyway. But, on CM7 I can't make a call without it dropping, and mms is out of the question. On stock, I can almost always get through a call and mms sends no problem. I have an airave and its the same story on that. CM7 the mms just sits there with the icon spinning forever. Stock it sends almost instantly. I keep a backup of both and just switch between depending on what I'm doing.

My favorite quote "Engineers are educated beyond their intelligence." Ironically, I am in school for engineering
Now I have a problem. I rooted again and right now I am stock rooted. My signal is back to being bad again. So I can either remain stock or switch back to Verizon or go with 3vo. I came to sprint just for this phone so I can root and play. I don't know what to do. I have 18 days left until my 30 is up...
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I rooted a couple days ago, haven't noticed much of a difference in signal strength practically... BUT my time without signal went from 1% to about 8% . Obviously battery life suffered somewhat.
Currently I'm on EvDO rev. A.
Will continue to post updates.
So I have switched to the hybrid 00001 prl for now and I get decent signal, eve get some at work. I figure if I'm going to switch tithe 3vo in a week I won't go over the 300mb roam limit. Its a shame too I like this phone, I just want something j can play with.

EVDO rev 0 to rev A switches depending on signal quality.

Why would that be...weird? Sounds like maybe a network upgrade or a change in the wind (not literally, though precipitation and certain cloud cover can matter).

Lower signal on s4 compared to s3?!

My s4 is one signal bar lower then my S3 same network exact same spot
Anyone else noticed weaker signal?
Sent from my XT890 using xda app-developers app
I thought mine was a bit weaker than my S2 too...
Wondering regarding this also ....
Reception much better than on S3 or xperia Z -0/1/2 bars.
With i9500 I got 2/4 bars !
I did a bunch of testing on my S4, and S3 and an HTC Evo 4G LTE yesterday, all Sprint, all over 3g using Speedtest.net. Differences were very minor and varied between each test. All within 5% at the most without any one of them being significantly slower or faster. We don't have any 4G or LTE around here, so can't speak to that.
Bumping for more opinions

[Q] Maximum Signal Bar is 4

Hi,
I would like to ask if it is normal to have a maximum of 4 signal bars in S4? I'm already using the optimized modem in my country but still receiving 4 signal bars max in return.
I don't think it is a coverage problem though since I already tried my SIM on my old S2 and it is showing 5 signal bars without any problem.
As of now, the maximum Signal Strength I can get is -77dBm 18a asu (2G).
Any help on this? Should I consider on deviating my 'optimized' country modem and flash a different one?
Thanks!

4 bars is the maximum SHOWN on the Galaxy S4 -77dBm is high!!! I currently have three bars at -98dBm! Basically the Scale is 0 to 4 bars.
I would leave the modem as it is especially as it is supposedly optimized for your country. Don't fix something that isn't broken!
I hope this helps,
4 bars is maximum? Why is that?

how did you optimize the modem ? i seem to having a lot of issues with "Not Registered on Network" and I must restart phone in order to make calls etc . Stock 4.3 android
No I mean I'm already using the optimized modem for my country.
My only worry is I'm still getting 4 bars signal max instead of 5.

I don't know what your on about, almost every phone I've ever had has only ever had the display show a maximum of 4 bars, except a small % that had 5 rare I'm pretty sure.
In my radio world S 5 is actually more correct.
If you want more bars go get network signal info from the store.

You are using Wanamlite Rom, right? There's an option in the Wanam Xposed app that controls the number of bars shown. The default in wanamlite is 5 (up to 6), but the signal isn't adjusted to that number of bars unless you tick the 'Adjust signal levels' option.
Thanks problem solved ..it was due to Wanam ...

Poor signal

So has anyone found a solution to the bad reception and 4glte bouncing around to no service. I've read several forums so I'm not the only one . It just pisses me off that I paid full price and Verizon gives you the run around and wants to send you a certified replacement. What a joke. We are in desperate need of an update.

I find it helps to turn on airplane mode then turn it off. Resetting the radios often helps it pick up 4g again.
We shouldn't have to keep toggling just to maintain lte. I called Verizon the other day and they put in a ticket but I don't think much is going to come of it.
This phone's reception is much weaker than the droid DNA. In places I got steady 4g, it now goes back and forth from 3g.
The signal strength is like a good 10-20+dbs worse than the DNA in the same spots. (I'm pretty much only at work and home do nothing's changed except the phone).
Sometimes with this phone, it'll show connected to lte (1-2 bars on the icon) but I can't get anything to load. No websites, no rhapsody streaming, nothing. All apps time out trying to connect. But that might be just a specific area at work. Regardless, I'm sure that even at home, the signal strength is always over -100 when the DNA would regularly be sub -100
So annoying.

If being better than the GS3 "blows" then okay.....
Not only is my cellular reception much better, my wifi reception is much better too. Good enough that in places that both didn't work before I now get at least usable 1x or one bar 3g/4g data.
I also had the gs3 . This phone by far kicks the gs3 butt. I will agree the gs3 signal is twice as good. My galaxy note 3 works awesome if I'm not at work or in my house. It is what it is.

OP, have you dropped your phone perhaps? I just read about the "LDS" technology they started using beginning with the Note 3 that integrates the antenna into the actual frame of the device. They say stress on the frame could cause the antenna itself inside to crack affecting signal.

I don't think people in here realize different manufacturers phones get different reception. HTC and Moto phones will ALWAYS get better signal. Its a fact of life. Just because your note 3 is newer doesn't mean anything.
And if your still thinking of switching to Dev Edition for better signal, your in for a surprise..... That phone has the same radio hardware in it that the Note 3 you currently have does. Wouldn't waste the "couple hundred bucks" looking there for better signal.
PS - my Note 3 gets phenomenal signal. Not as good as my HTC One did (obviously) but better than all the other flagship phones Verizon has had in the last 2 yrs.
