[Q] Trying to make a filesystem in a file. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've been searching around for awhile now but I can't find anything on this. Simply, I've been trying to create a filesystem (ext2) on a file (created with dd). My goal is to get gentoo running on this device (gentoo actually has been ported to ARM, so I don't see why it wouldn't work). Now here lies the problem, when I try to create the filesystem using mkfs.ext2, I get this odd error:

I've never had trouble doing this before on a desktop or laptop before, so I'm pretty stumped as to why this is doing this.
Help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I really should mention that I am not using the stock ROM. I currently have cyanogenmod installed (10.1) with the 4.2.2 kernel. I also have busybox 1.21.0 installed as well.

This problem doesn't exist on my device (stock ROM, busybox installed using app "Busybox" from Google Play). I used the same command as you and it worked. Maybe it is fault of your Busybox version?
I don't know will this workaround satisfy you, but you can simply prepare this file using any Linux desktop and then move it to your device.

Busybox update.zip for incredible?

Does an update.zip exist for the incredible to add busybox to a stock rooted Rom? Or is there anyone willing to make one? I found one for the hero where they stripped down a rom and just left busybox, apps2sd, and Su. It would be greatly appreciated by many noobs like myself.

I believe Stericson has an app out that installs busy box for you with a single click. Just search "Busy box" in the market and it should come up. Not sure as to whether or not it works on the Incredible, as I've an Evo, but it should.
I tried that but it failed saying either I it couldn't remount or I wasn't rooted.

I think the unrevoked tool installs it for you.
I'll try that again, but I used 3.0 to root it. Maybe 3.1 will install it, I thought that was only windows fixes from 3.0

Wouldn't be permenant since NAND is still locked. Would lose it after reboot and have to do same thing over and over after every reboot.

Apply this payload-update.zip and it will install busybox. Just go to recovery and choose install zip from SD card and then choose this one
Then to test
go to cmd prompt
type adb shell
then when in shell type
busybox and you will see its now installed.
If you want the latest busybox, I've attached 1.16.2 freshly compiled.
One issue I ran into was that all the info on the forums has busybox being installed in /system/xbin. The PATH variable has /system/bin before /system/xbin, so that means the original symlinks to "toolbox" are getting picked up first - I don't know if I'm the only one who was annoyed by ls -al returning "-al: No such file or directory"
I guess "toolbox" didn't support this, so you can either install busybox to /system/bin, or leave it in /system/xbin and create a symlink called toolbox in /system/bin that points to busybox in /system/xbin.
As usual, backup your "toolbox" binary first before removing it from /system/bin.
Now ls -al returns a correct listing and I see no app breakage by the symlink method - Ti Backup runs just fine without needing to install its own busybox.
*edit - I guess this doesn't really answer the OP, but I figured I would share this anyway.
ok so I found a side effect - WiFi doesnt work after this. There seems to be a problem with dhcpcd and the new busybox, even though external dhcp support was compiled in...guess I've got some digging to do...

that is a busybox install I ripped out of a N1 froyo root update.zip Cyanogen did, modded for the D-Inc.
Seems to work well for me.

... but it does NOT install the newest busybox; just one which is compatible with Titanium Backup.
Busybox.net shows v1.17 is the latest (unstable) release, and v1.16.2 is the latest stable. Titanium Backup pushes something in the v1.15 area.

Also when I did it through titanium and went to busybox to install latest it said my system had none.
I have a busybox 1.16.2 version that I ripped from one of the posted ROMs that I can attach. It works on the Inc, and I think the whole DHCP / resolv.conf thing works too. At least it's the only version I tried where I can get wget working properly. You may need to create /system/etc/resolv.conf with some valid nameservers first though. Let me know if you want me to post it.
Hmm, nevermind. I tried with the busybox version I have, and WiFi does not get an IP address. Seems to be the same problem.
If you track it down, when you compile your version check if wget works properly also. There were some issues with that and DNS lookups. Don't forget you may need a valid resolv.conf.

I second this , I used ones off the rooting forums and it never quite worked right until I let titanium backup install it for me. Also its much easier than pushing files to your device if you are unfamiliar with doing it, because you can download tb from market and it does the work for you

Easiest way to stay current is to install the Stericson app. It can't install it for you due to the NAND lock, but
1) It's trivial to extract it and install manually from the .apk file.
2) It will give you an easy notification via the marketplace that a new version is available.

Nickname and Address are not needed, call it what you want though.
Changing the colour to 24bit and enabling local mouse pointer and full screen bit map are not neccesary but reccomended.

-You can log in via ssh, (gives a much better terminal, ie works properly with aptitude). Use [email protected] and password "toor"
-The version of Debian is Armel Lenny, installed using debootstrap.
-It is just the base package with LXDE on top, you only get a desktop, a file browser, an internet browser, and a pic viewer.
-If you want more packages there's tonnes of room on the image. eg apt-get install openoffice.org or apt-get install abiword or apt-get install any flipping thing u want
-You can access the SDCARD from Debian at "root/sdcard" (read-write)
-You can access Debian filesystem from Android (When Debian is running) at "sdcard/debian" (read only)
-debian.img is mounted at "sdcard/debian" using "dev/block/loop5"
-So far the only rom i have come accross that this dont work with is one of the cyanogen nightlies from last week. apart from that, working on opendesire, cyanogen, defrost, leedroid, official 2.2 with busybox...
Issues.
Debian cannot be shut down. You need to reboot the phone to do this. (You can kill the VNC server with "vncserver -kill :1" there is an icon on the festoons to do this.)

dont know why that happened.. works on mine. syntax looks ok to me.
try with this one (attatched), it's the same but without the bit that's not working for you.
what rom are you using, i shall try to replicate the error so I can try to fix properly.

There should be a guide on installing busybox somewhere if you want to search for it, i know i remember seeing one a while ago.
Too be honest, your better off just flashing a rom that includes busybox, it would be MUCH easier.
have a look here and see what takes your fancy, I would recomend defrost, because it is stable and easy to overclock.

You should understand that this is not a really booted native linux. Instead you are working in a chroot environment. So there is no kernel running that can get parameters. Only the the stock kernel of your DeFroST. Also there is no FrameBuffer as the graphic hardware ist not accessible. Instead this approach uses a vnc-server to which you can connect via a local viewer.
The advantage of this approach is clear:
- run almost any linux package available in the debian repository
- use your phone as before with the nice android
The disadvantage:
- no graphic output, so no 3D-games (which are rare under linux on the arm platform ;-)
- you can crash your android by eating up to much ram (not such a problem - it restarts on its own and if not you just have to reboot)

It seems this thread is dead. The problems many users seem to have come from a dirty setup. The image is broken in many terms:
- wrong file permissions on important binaries, like su
- wrong file permissions on many device files under /dev, so the ttys are only accessible by root
- wrong permissions on other places so there are always errors when installing additonal software (e.g. with the man pages)
- wrong setup that uses the root user for the desktop - instead an unprivileged user should be used
- missing packages for timezones and locales so the time is only right, if you are in a UTC region and console programs having trouble displaying anything else then plain english
I can not recommend using this setup image. It is better to use one of the instructions available online to get a clean setup.

Yep, it is broken as hell, but it works for what most people would need it for...make,gcc,python,a proper web browser,torrents, and some emergency word processing on the train to work.
The problem most people have is not being able to mount the image, this is due to fro-yo a2sd taking up all the loop devices.
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
I tried this on a MIUI rom and the scripy didnt do anything - ie i ran it using:
"# sh /sdcard/deboot"
.....and all it said was:
"#"
I entered all the lines in the shell script but the last one said it failed to launch VLC and no commands registered property (not even ls)
So i tried it on Defrost 5.1, and the script still didn't work.
But when i entered everything manually, it did work. Not too sure about the green theme though.
But thanks alot! Saves me spending a few hours trying to coax a working debootstrap out of my computer.

Nope. Actually su works only for root. It's missing the setuid root flag like all other binaries that should have it set.

Nope. I am always working as a normal, unprivileged user in my chroot. You just have to be in the proper groups. No need to work as root. Android works also with an unprivileged user.

This is what I do not understand. There is no need that it is broken, as mine works without any errors. So I think something went wrong in creating yours. For sure a chroot is no running OS but you can server almost any service with it and run anything you want (if your ram does not get exhausted ;-).

Yes. Everyone with a good rom should have a2sd+ (aka the old a2sd) which saves more space than the froyo one and leaves your loop devices for you.

errors when using adb and CM6 on HTC aria

I wonder if other people are having these issues, story follows.
I was trying to install the updated ADW.launcher via the adb install command and was getting errors such as "/sbin/sh pm not found". This led to an investigation and it turns out that all the standard applications used to install stuff under android are in /system/bin BUT... The path in the CM6 rom does not have /system/bin in the PATH variable. The only path element as far as I can tell is /sbin. So the solution I came up with was to copy over all the tools from /system/bin to /sbin and this worked.
So here is the real question. How do I change the path on the android device? I have already tried export PATH=$PATH:/system/bin but this does not stick after I close the adb shell.
Update: oh great when you reboot the phone all the copied tools disappear and you have to do it all over again to install another file. Did not expect that one. This makes my need to change the path even more urgent.
Update2: I found it easier to just push the new file over top of the old one in /system/app. This will work for system apps and if I need to install other apps I can just load them from the sdcard.
Is there a reason you are not installing it from market? ADW is the default launcher in CM6, so the one from market is not the same, but they can coexist.

Yea I was not really sure about that so I felt it was safer to download the one for CM6. If that works I will do that in the future. I ended up just doing a push over the older version in /system/app, this worked fine.
Is there a reason this rom does not have /system/bin in its path? Is it to avoid toolbox?

Maybe its baked into the boot.img? What about the init scripts? Any clues where to start? Maybe I will just flash on a new nightly, would that over write the existing path info?

Answered my own post.
To change the path you need to edit init.rc and add the correct path.
For some reason the nightly I was using had the wrong path in there and would not let me use adb install correctly. I would get an error back "/sbin pm not found". The adb installer was looking for a tiny program (a shell script really) named "pm" but it could not find it because pm is located in /system/bin which was not in the search path. Probably would have caused other problems too.
On a side note, why could I not get an answer to this simple question on a developement thread. Seems like rom creators/moders would know this second hand. Not complaining just makes me wonder.
Sounds a lot like a complaint to me.
I've been busy working on issues that are not isolated to a bad nightly, such as why we can't read telnos and contacts from the sim card.
/system/bin/sysinit gets pulled in from the cm6 repository, so things on nightlies are very fluid - I never know what to expect. Looking at my build, there is no way I could answer your question in any definitive way that would explain the discrepancy. Since I could not verify the problem, I deemed it a non-issue and moved on.
That did sound like a complaint, sorry. It was not really directed at you as I assume there is more than one developer on this site. I got it solved no problems. Maybe this will help someone else down the road. I have seen a few of these posts around and never saw a concrete answer.
I am surprised the phone ran so well with the path mangled so bad. I am also a little surprised that init.rc gets touched at all on a nightly cycle. One of those things I guess.

Hi all,
Love my HTC Desire so much i bought a Witstech A81E Android 2.2 Tablet. Which is pretty buggy to say the least though on the whole works well.
The one thing that is driving me crazy is a number of apps dont install with the logcat error:
"packagename.apk requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps"
Now from what i have read apparently this device does not come with Google Maps API so my question is how do i add it?
Can it be done? Do i need to modify a ROM to do it? can i push it via adb or apk?
A little help would be greatly appreciated.
It would need to have google apps installed to be able to access the libraries. Best bet is to find out if it has been rooted yet and try to install the proprietary applications they can't ship the device with.

the unit already has google maps 5.0 installed but apparently doesnt have the API's.
Any idea what im looking for? will it be an APK or just some files i need to put in a system folder?

If the application is installed correctly it should work because the api is stored in the data. Is the application on the tablet installed to the /system/ or /data/ partition. It might be looking for the data in /system/
not sure what you mean about where the application resides? you mean the app i am trying to install? The app i am trying to install is Tasker.
i have been doing some googling and saw someone else have the same problem and he managed to fix it:
When trying to install some apps, I would see this error message in logcat:
requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps
I had the Google Maps app installed and working, but that didn’t fix the issue. It turns out, I had to add two other files and restart the phone. I found those files in the google zip from Cyanogenmod. It took a little fiddling, but I was able to use these instructions to remount /system in write mode. First step was to take the following two files from the google apps zip (gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip) and put them onto my sd card.
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Then to load them onto the phone, I opened the terminal emulator and ran:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /mnt/sdcard/com.google.android.maps.xml /system/etc/permissions/
cp /mnt/sdcard/com.google.android.maps.jar /system/framework/
Then after I rebooted the phone, I was able to install apps that depend on Google Maps. I can now check bus and train times, and do all kinds of other cool stuff with maps!

i simply used root explorer to copy it across though still not working. surely someone smarter than me can tell me what i am doing wrong.

Well did you try using terminal emulator? And do what he did? B/c that looks like a remount to system to me easy as pie just do what he did you can find the files with root explorer or do it on your pc doesnt really matter. You can Not achieve what he did just using root explorer you need terminal emulator!

I don't know how much it will help (or if its 100 percent true) but I was just told recently that moving a file via root explorer is the same as pushing it via adb.

Anybody who wants to get CIFS working after 1.8.3 update (assumes you have cifs.ko and slow-work.ko from 1.5.7)
1) adb
2) su
3) mkdir /lib/modules/2.6.32.9-00007-g527fe10
4) cp <slow-work.ko location>/slow-work.ko /lib/modules/2.6.32.9-00007-g527fe10
5) cp <cifs.ko location>/cifs.ko /lib/modules/2.6.32.9-00007-g527fe10
6) depmod -a
7) modprobe slow-work.ko
8) modprobe cifs.ko
9) reboot
This will load up CIFS automatically after every boot.

Can you explain how to get CIFS if we don't have cifs.ko and slow-work.ko from 1.57? Not new to linux, but new to working with android so step-by-steps are apprecaited.

Well, you can build them from the source. But here are some useful ko's build for 1.57

You are using in Windows to share folders on network. Linux implementation is called Samba. If you have that capability on your phone, you can mount your home network shares, watch movies directly from your phone without actually copying them on the phone and all sort of good thinks.
It is absolutely essential service, if you want to use your phone more extensively.
Do you know how to get nls_utf8.ko working with cifs?
Insmod nls_utf8.ko says "error inserting 'nls_utf8.ko': -1 Invalid module format

Grr, hopefully this doesn't cause a double post - having user error even getting a quick reply in...
I followed your directions above but had some issues. When copying the files over, I kept getting 'cannot stat ..." I gave it the full path, it was under the c directory, I even tried placing the files directly under C but no matter what it kept giving the same issue. I then just copied them onto the phone using mass storage method and then did a cp from adb shell to put them in the modules directory. I assume it needed to be copied using the shell as su in order for permissions to work out?
Then I did depmod -a, which worked fine. However, modprobe .. did not. It only retuns FATAL cannot find module etc. I tried giving it the full path to the files with no success. So a google search showed some people saying to try insmod instead. I treid that giving the full path to the files and it didn't return any errors. So I ASSUME it worked?
Not sure why this didn't go as smooth as your instructions. I feel like I hacked my way through it and it's likely gone awry. I wont be able to test this out with CIFS manager until later tonight. Any suggestions on where I went wrong or what I might need to redo?

Well, it worked like a champ. Thanks for the quick how-to and help. Now if I could find an app that will play .iso format movies it would all be perfect...
Update:
Not only does it work, it works great. Had some time to really play with it and I couldn't be happier. No more streaming from PC to phone (except for iso formats) via apps like VLC S&C. Simply browse to the mount which looks just like any other folder on my phone and open and play my media, or open my docs. Quality is excellent, can seek/skip whatever without any hesitation. In short, it acts just as though it's a local folder. I know this is old news to most of you. Just thought I'd share for those who aren't familiar with CIFS. I swear, this connects/mounts to my windows server and plays better than my windows PC.
Just to clarify, for those who my run into the same issues I did.
If it refuses to copy the files from your pc to phone under adb shell, just copy them to your phone via the usual usb mass storage drag/drop method. I placed them in a temp folder. then back to the adb shell, do the cp commands just adjust the path where the files live to the path on your phone (i.e. in the temp dir). I suppose you might be able to just move these into the modules dir using a file explorer w/ root privs but I wanted to be sure the correct file permissions existed by doing it with adb shell as su.
Then if, after doing depmod -a the modprobe doesn't work, use insmod. I gave the full path to where you copy these files in (/lib/modules/2.6.32.9-00007-g527fe10/<filename>). Again, not sure if thats needed or if it's smart enough to scan the full modules hierarchy for the file names.
This doesn't seem to work for me anymore after the GB OTA update. Anyone has it working for them?

Is there any harm in using a cifs.ko intended for a different device? I'm at work now, but might give this a shot when I get home to see if it's functional for Atrix. There's another thread under the development section asking the same question of where we can get a Gingerbread friendly module.

theres a bunch of kernels (some included in ROMs) with baked in CIFs support such as the popular faux123's overclock/undervolt kernel.

Hmm. Haven't taken the leap to unlock the BL. Haven't had a need for a custom ROM yet. Really, the only functionality missing for my purposes is this cifs module. I'd rather not have to unlock and bake a custom ROM just for a cifs module if possible.
fair enough. I figure if I'm rooting around system files (pun intended) might as well go the whole hog.
Then again I've run custom ROMs on all 3 droids I've owned so I'm kinda used to the assumption that whatever stock is, I can get it much faster/better

There shouldn't be... but I'm pretty sure the Module (cifs.ko) needs to be compiled for the specific kernel version. (2.6.32.9-00001-g41bc3e0 [email protected] #2) The Actual Android version (GB 2.3.4) does not matter.
So if you find a cifs.ko for THAT kernel version (or a Kernel thats close enough) it might work. It's trial and error.
There are lots of folks (far smarter than I am), who can grab the kernel source and compile a cifs.ko... I'll have to learn one of these days.

True. I have the official OTA 2.3.4 update and haven't seen any clear direction on whether I can unlock - looks like most of the information is related to those who unlocked with the leaked update. Granted, I haven't put much time into it since I've been content up until now. Might be time to start digging for info.

I believe the module I linked was from a Samsung device so I'm guessing it's a no go. Appreciate the info guys!

Took this advice and flashed faux123's kernel.
Not only does cifs work... my data speeds went from 300k average.. to 2mb average.
