Tested cifs.ko and nls_utf8.ko (from factory kernel)

Just for interested people, I have compiled cifs.ko and nls_utf8.ko from US version SGHI897 kernel (from samsung opensource website). This package has been tested under JF6, (out-of-box settings, but rooted). Key notes:
0. mount with -o iocharset=utf8, -t cifs
1. use "busybox" to do "mv or cp or mount or umount"
2. use direct "#" prompt to do "insmod"
3. better use GScript after you have tested these ko's

coz, from searching the forum, there is no cifs and utf8 support for captivate. The first is used when using captivate to mount remote windows share folders. In other words, you can use rockplayer on captivate to browser media files on windows desktop. For some reasons, there could be encoding problem to view these media files' names, such as asian characters. Then the second one is needed.

I can definitely see why UTF8 is important, though I have no idea what to do with these files to be honest. also, linux-based system that doesn't support UTF8, really?

hiway123, i pulled down your make of cifs.ko; loaded it in a network folder on my ext sdcard, but am not sure what to do now. (insmod, etc)
I attempted a few mount commands, and a few other linux norm paths, but I think I am lost here. Can you give a 1, 2, step of how to run the mount command? your post was rather cryptic. (i know i know, for the interested only! well definitely interested...)
*Note* I downloaded this nifty app: CIFSmanager app from the market, and it is open enough that it allows for the user to direct path for the cifs module (insmod path) to the file you compiled (again which is now on my sdcard) it seemed to be happy with it, but gave me some other error I believe had something to do with it not being root. I have a samba server in LAN, say at 192.168.1.1. So, I do these steps:
1. unzip my package to your computer, there are two ko files. Then use USB cable to transfer these two files to your phone in /sdcard folder.
2. on the phone, I used "terminal emulator", run "su" into root mode, make new folders like "busybox mkdir /system/lib/modules", you may try other directory name, I don't think that does a matter. Move the two ko files from /sdcard to this newly created folder, remember to use "busybox mv" command.
3. create a mount point on your phone, "mkdir /sdcard/smb" for example. or "busybox mkdir" I cannot remember.
4. insert modules, using "insmod /system/lib/modules/cifs.ko" and "insmod /system/lib/modules/nls_utf8.ko", remember these commands must be run everytime after you reboot your phone, so I use Gscript to create a shortcut, it's very convenient.
5. mount server's samba share folder in the phone, using "busybox mount -t cifs //192.168.1.1/your_share_folder /sdcard/smb -v -o user=yourusername,pass=yourpasswd,iocharset=utf8".
6. now, you can use rockplayer to browse into /sdcard/smb on your phone to view what is shared.
7. It is better to umount your folder once you finish transferring files. Then simply do "busybox umount /sdcard/smb".
Actually, only commands 5-7 are needed after your first attempt. Of course, if you have not done step 4 after a reboot, you need to do that step as well. I use Gscript in market to create shortcuts to these 4-7 commands. That's more convenient instead of typing on such small screen.

Have you tried this with any of the Custom ROMs in this section? If so, which ones work? Can you tell me how to compile a CIFS.KO?
Can it be compiled against the ROMs supplied here?

Should mention, I used the posted .KO with stock rogers rom (i896) and it seems to be working flawlessly from my testing so far. I've even been able to stream some lower bitrate HD video and have it run smoothly and consistantly

i use SetiroN's kernel... and I9000 Froyo - maybe that is the reason?

Id assume that the kernel you are using isn't compatible and the module will have to be compiled for it.

[SCRIPT] Adblock Script and Updater

I put together a small shell script to make it easy for anyone rooted to block ads and check to see if they have the latest version I keep of adhosts. If after checking you do not have the latest, it will download it for you automatically.
What does this script do (in a nutshell):
1) Checks to see if you have the latest version of ad hosts for adblocking from me
2) If you do not have the latest, it will download it for you
3) If you have the latest, it just exits out, no changes
4) Installs the script to your /system/xbin directory so the next time you just have to type:

and it will run the script for you
How to run this?
Get this if you are using an AOSP ROM:
1) Download it from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/24904191/blockads
Try this if you are using a SENSE ROM (thanks chrootz for the fixes):

*** If you have troubles getting the script to work, try updating your system to the latest version of busybox (stick it in /system/xbin and overwrite the current version of busybox, then change the permissions to 755 and owner and group to root) ***
2) Move it to /data/local/tmp (if you dont have it, create it) from a file explorer with root permissions (must set the system in r/w mode) or from the terminal shell
3) make sure the script has the right permissions by typing:

in the terminal shell (in the emulator or whatever you use to get to it)
4) run the script by typing

5) let it do its thing
After its done you can run it again anytime from the terminal by typing

I forgot some ROMs and such have a busybox version that doesn't work right with hostnames in wget. I'll see if I can work around that and update the script
EDIT: updated to work around by using the IP for those that their busybox wget does not work correctly with hostnames. Only issue with that is the IP may change.

Ok. I am stuck. I actually don't have a hosts file under "etc", only a hosts.bak. With root explorer mounted as r/w I am still not able to rename the "host.bak" file to "hosts" - error message "read-only file/directory". I created a blank "hosts" text file, put in on the sdcard and with terminal emulator still can't cp to "etc" because of "read-only directory" error message. Any other suggestions?

Updated blockads script to test this am and:

The end result is the existing hosts file being renamed hosts.bak and obviously no new hosts filebeing being created.
EDIT.... The above is testing on my inspire running busybox 1.19. Tried using the script on my sensation running bb 1.18.4 and it works fine.
Edit edit... Installed bb 1.18.4 on inspire and result is the same as posted above.

That's what I did, but it does not work - still does not let me modify read-only files.

After reading over the code and seeing the comments, I can only guess you had the modified version of wget on your device during testing, which does support host names. Before I continue, I am not trying to rain on your parade, but... By downloading the file, checking the md5, comparing it to the existing file, replacing if needed, and then cleaning up... you went about 5 steps beyond what just doing an "if server file is newer" check would do by including a custom wget. Even though you have to put in the code to install and verify the wget, the trade is that you no longer have to download the file every time, check it every time, and worry about making sure the md5 matches.
If you decide you want to switch over to that method, you can check out the option already included in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092128 by downloading the live install version to view the actual script. Just a recommendation to optimize the process. Nice work, though, you definitely found a way to get the job done.
As for the difference between this and Adfree. There is no real difference. Adfree checks the server, does a callback, and prompts the user with updates. Adfree just requires an entire shell to turn it into an app, but will automatically run on boot.

So, for those of you not comfortable running ADB, or Terminal Emulator, just install AdFree, and let it do everything for you.

Well, you also have the option of most included ROM toolkits, ScriptFusion, and a lot of preinstalled adblock scripts, but the big difference is the hosts file itself. Sounds like this one is custom, whereas mine takes bamf and adfree and merges them. This one may end up blocking more ads, but the only way to know would be to sit down and compare them all.

Ah, I see.

Thank you for your comments everyone . I'll refine the script a bit more and also deal with a permanent workaround for not having a wget that checks hostsnames by testing with a ping and getting the IP first, using that and then doing wget. This started as a way for me to deal with having to move my ad host file each time I update it on my phone to just giving it out to everyone.
The only other difference than what was mentioned between my script and adfree as far as I know is I include a wider range of adhosts according to those that have used both. I have never used adfree, but people that have said I blocked more ads than they do and I also use an invalid IP address to block (0.0.0.0) instead of the loopback address (127.0.0.1) so it kills them a bit faster.
If anyone is still having problems that weren't resolved with it from above, let me know as well. I tested it against busybox 1.16.2 on my own phone, but it seems no 2 busybox version are alike

Added about 10-15 more hosts today.

Thanks for the script. I'm going to give it a shot in a little bit. AdFree hasn't worked right in months. I've been using Absolute System to block ads, but I think I'll give this a try. Thanks again.

I'm about 50% done working on a basic gui app to do what the script does + some other features, just to give an update. GUI app will be free to any xda members of course
Things I am putting into it:
Choice between no blocking, partial blocking (basically in browser only stuff in case you want to show developers some love by not blocking their application ads), and full blocking.
Updating like the script does with just a touch of a button.
Optional ability to download a host block list for your desktop pc.
*features that may come later*
-ability to send me hosts from the app to add to the block list
-ability to add your own hosts on the fly to the list (either for personal routing or for adblocking, since adblocking is only the secondary use of the hosts file). Unfortunately, you will have to figure out the hosts yourself, since there's no easy way to tell really automatically.
Any other suggestions are welcomed

Sounds like AdFree but much better and will work better as well. Can't wait!!

Just tried this today on gingeritis 3d beta8 and it doesnt seem to work as i get the same error someone else posted a few posts back. Something about no such file or directory system/etc/hosts. I reverted adfree and uninstalled it and renamed the hosts file to hosts from hosts.bak but when I Su adblock it gets renamed to hosts.bak and terminal shows that same error

I randomly found this last night while looking for a decent mobile IDE for my tablet. I was looking for a simple text editor with syntax highlighting and you've taken that extra step to include other tools for ssh, telnet and compilers. Much appreciated.
One question, how do you start the ssh server? sshd doesn't seem to do it. I would like to scp files to my device from my desktop in order to work on my commute.

The sshd app is actually called Dropbear.
You also have Dropbearkey.
You use Dropbearkey to generate the sshd certificates you need.
I really need to add a tutorial on setting the sshd keys up
For now Google has a couple of articles on it.
For file transfers you also have busybox FTP but I admit not terribley secure..
Allthough SSH is provided, and I wonder whether an SSH pipe can be created..?
And lastly you can just copy the files over to your sdcard via USB..

Ok. So I now have SSHD working..
But there is a slight issue.. basically when you log in you have to start bash manually.. unless you have the file /etc/shell with the correct shell to use.. Which requires a rooted phone.
Since Terminal IDE is for non-ROOT users, I will have to recompile the code to allow a shell to be specified on the command line.. Soon..
FOR NOW - This is how to connect to the phone via SSH (There are other ways using public keys but this is one way)
So - Once in Terminal IDE
2) You need to create a couple of server ssh keys
Start in $HOME

Create folder

Give it some secure permissions

Get in there

Now create the keys

ok - That's almost it. Just need to start dropbear with the correct parameters now. [Probably want to keep this in a script]

You need to know the UID of your app, which is different per phone - use 'id'

That will tell you your user ID / Group ID. Let's say its 10058.
Now to start DropBear

dropbear -A -N username -U 10058 -G 10058 -C password -d ~/.ssh/dropbear_dss_host_key -r ~/.ssh/dropbear_rsa_host_key -F -E -p 8090 -P PidFile
This will start it running in the foreground with password set to 'password' on port 8090.
Then you can connect, like telnet, and simply use 'password' for the password.
Now for the issue. It will start a simple shell session in / with no ENVIRONMENT variables or anything..
I'll fix it permanently in a future release, but for now it can be fixed with these 2 commands.
cd into your home dir - Check this is correct on your device

cd /data/data/com.spartacusrex.spartacuside/files
And start bash with an init file Terminal IDE auto-magically creates..

./system/bin/bash --init-file ./.init
Everything should now be setup as usual.

One thing to clarify for those "braving" this (not that it's all that insane to try)... the '-N' is setting the username (in the case of the example, setting it to 'username').
Also, it gives a permission denied for scp, I'm assuming since it doesn't init/run the shell. Should be fine since FTP is included. Haven't tried this option yet. Not too worried about security at the moment, since I'll only run it on a private network.
May I make a (maybe) small feature request? Is it possible to include a "keep screen awake" option in the options menu? I have my Xoom config'd to turn off the wifi when the screen is off for power saving (can go ~4 days on 1 charge), so it will kill my connections if I let this happen. I know not everyone has this config set, but it'd be a nice option.
NOW, if I wasn't lazy, I could probably add this myself and build since I've dl'd the source. But, lazy and working on a few projects already.

- CPU Lock
- SCREEN Lock
- WIFI Lock

Most likely seems to be due to the ROM you are using and/or the market version
can u post the build.prop here?

also, try going back to market 2.x, 3.x market(s) do loads of checks

Does anybody know why I can't compile java files? I always get the following error:
Error reading /system/framework/android_policy.jar cannot read zip file.
Any ideas? Could anyone upload there android_policy.jar because that might cause the error.

Does the helloworld example work?
The parameters have to be correct, and as always exact, and the BOOTCLASSPATH variable must be set.
If so, is it a custom ROM?
Does that policy jar file exist and is it readable by non root users?

Ubuntu Woes on Urukdroid

Following the instructions here, I attempted to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my Archos 70 running Urukdroid 1.5. I'm running it through the terminal emulator and not ADB. When I attempt to run ubuntu.sh I get a lot of errors, and then bootubuntu fails to work.

There are 3 leethal messages:
I'm not sure about the ext2 message - can't imagine that UD has no ext2 module - need to check it out myself...
"TERM environment variable not set." is obvious - means there is some (TERM) environment variable missing wich is propably set when use adb?!?!
As the variable is used in each command after the error - they fail ... so the folders that should be created or removed propably have the variable in its structure and should sound a bit different...
hard to tell from here need the script - downloading atm - but takes ages
cd: 26: can't cd to /sdcard/ubuntu sounds a bit strange too but again it seems that u can acces sdcar with /sdcard from adb but on UD runtime its mounted /mnt/storage/sdcard...
So either you try to fix those lines in the scriptand find it out - or try follow they guide - and use adb

Well, I decided to redownload the Ubuntu image and try again. This time it went off without a hitch; I guess I had some file corruption in the first download. But now I've done the essential steps (apt-get updates, setting up LXDE environment and VNC server) and when I try to connect to the VNC host I just get a gray screen with an "x" shaped cursor and nothing else.

Same here. X-Server seems to start (grey background, x-shaped cursor), but nothing else. Tried the 2 versions of the xstartup (with, and without the last 2 lines), no change. I had to increase the portnumber with every reboot (working with pocketcloud to connect to the vnc server).

hi guys, this seems to be a problem some people are having with the new 10.10 build, the problem is I cant seem to replicate the problem.
I would recommend trying a fresh ubuntu image without install lxde or the fixes, ie just boot into vncserver.
If this dosnt work then try installing lxde and adding the lines to the xstartup to makesure it uses that desktop.

I'm having (unrelated, probably) problems running this on the stock ROM with Chulri's r/w root. I am unable to mount the provided image (or any loopback filesystem, for that matter), whether from the script, or manually from a root shell prompt.
It appears that the stock kernel does not include a loop device driver (built-in, or as module), as there's no 'loop' directory under /sys/module/ and no loop.ko under /lib/modules. The installed busybox is also lacking losetup and chroot, but that's almost beside the point.
To deal with this, I've built a fixed busybox, which works fine, and a custom kernel using Chulri's buildroot, which doesn't, so much. I've built custom kernels for the Archos 70 before, to add compcache and the interactive CPU governor, and they've worked fine. But in this case, I make sure CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP is set to 'y' in linux.config/.config, but after flashing the kernel and rebooting, there still seems to be no loop driver (no loop directory under /sys/module -- it should show up even when compiled-in, which it does on my Fedora desktop). Needless to say, this confuses me, and it's where I stopped working on it.
Has anyone got this working on a Gen8 Archos tablet without Urukdroid?

It would seem that loop devices only works well on the Urukdroid rom, so for now if you want ubuntu you will have to use this

OpenOffice on Webtop

I've done the webtop2sd, webtopfix, and installed xfce4 via synaptic. Today I tried to install openoffice from synaptic (along with it's recommended dependencies and extras). I got the following error, which now happens on every package install:

I don't know if I really need these packages, and even though I'm an old-timer with Ubuntu (been running since before Jaunty), I'm not as comfortable with dinking around with dpkg and would rather dpkg stop trying to install these every time. Any help would be appreciated.

its a known issuse i dont think it does work n xfce4 i rries it too and it didnr work eather the other type of cusrom webtop it might woek the debian one

That's strange... I have the same setup (Webtop2SD, XFCE4, OpenOffice, and many others) and all is good and dandy...
By webtopfix you mean to fix dependencies?
How big is your EXT partition you installed the Webtop copy through Webtop2SD app?
I created a 4 GB EXT partition to avoid running out of space. I'm not saying that the error you are seeing is because you are running out of space, but could that be the reason?
Also, are you using the latest Busybox release?

I created a 4GB partition. Openoffice seems to be working, I've run a few of the apps. I think these are addins that are failing, and it seems to be a busybox issue at that (or perhaps the deb but I doubt it)... And right now I don't know the busybox release.
I also did the chromium install after that and no issue.

I read somewhere that emailmerge doesn't work with webtop, and that's why it keeps doing that. You'll have to remove it somehow... I'm not smart enough to tell you how though.
Kinda doubt this will work:
sudo apt-get purge openoffice.org-emailmerge
Edit: I read your full log. Run webtopscripts again.

Ok, I'll run it again, but I hope this isn't normal to have to run it multiple times after installing things.
Edit: Wow! Either it missed a lot the first time I ran this script, something undid its changes, or it's just reinstalling packages for fun (actually, the first part of the script had a whole bunch of "already installed" messages, so it probably isn't just re-installing).

I've had to run it three or four times as other packages force upgrades. Fixes most issues. Had some packed named ed that can't install or uninstall, removed it by editing its file in /var... something.

If you can see an app or component inside Sytaptic Manager, you can remove it the same way you installed it. Just select the option to uninstall.

On my last rom (Alien v4, Faux 0.22 1.2GHz Kernel, webtop2sd, Webtop v2.3.4, webtopscripts v1.4) I was able to download and install OpenOffice without an issue; but everytime I launched it the webtop-panel would crash. OpenOffice appeared to work fine though. I'll probably install it again here shortly on this FruitCake 2.3.6 setup, installing xfce4 at the moment.

I think the tzdata issue was biting me. I went in and made the recommended change and it finished installing.

It crashes it in debian chroot, but in a normal environment it worked for me.
