how would i manually go about changing the LCD density on a rooted S4?
edit:
**This post is mostly for Noobs** Thought I would post as it is very useful to know.
Here is how to change the lcd density on the charge manually.
**YOU MUST BE ROOTED**
1. Using root explorer go to
System>build.Prop
2. Make sure read/write capabilities are set and long press on build.Prop
3. Choose edit in text editor and the file will open
4. Go halfway down until you see lcd density =240
5. Change the density to a lower number such as 200. This will allow for a much higher resolution.
6. Save and exit
7. Reboot
***warning! If you set the density too low your phone won't run the rom correctly. Not advised under 160

I'm hoping to get a bit of advice, I'm new to ROM cooking but after a couple days I'm nearly there. Please see the list of issues and have a look if you know the solution to any of them. Many thanks, Andrew

prob: no longer asks for screen calibration on install.
fix: Do manually via Settings > Screen until I find a fix.
prob: after installed you'll get a white screen saying "please wait".
fix: Hit one of the top icons and it'll go away.
note: I'm looking for a fix without enabling HTC's RunCC.
prob: clicking the battery icon doesn't do anything (it should really invoke power).
fix: access manually via Settings until I fix.
prob: screen text is default (one size too large imho). Need to find the registry key to notch it down a level.
fix: do manually via "screen"for now.
prob: the background is a gif as I can't workout how to get the compiler to use a jpg for the Default_stwater.
fix: none
issue: slight colour banding because of it.
prob: empty Tools folder on Start-Menu.
fix: delete it from /Windows/Start-Menu/Programs
issue: can't find the location to kill it so you'll need to do manually.

I am also a noob cook but for the tilt. Ill be happy to help you with what I can.
The screen calibration depends on the build you are using. What build are you using?
I normally just take a jpg file and rename it and copy over the old one in the sys file.
As far as the empty folder you should be able to just delete the icon and then it will not be there. I am not sure how you have your kitchen set up. If you have a custom icon package in your ext folder then you can delete it there.
Not to sure about the text size but will look into it.
1
might be something with your kitchen
in some kitchens for diamond there is option to "disable everything other than screen calibration" (exactly opp. but that might cause some issue)
3
use advanced config and in "today" options select display battery on today screen
6
in your kitchen look for a file called "initflashfiles.dat" (NOT TXT)
it will be in "OEM_Lang_xxxx" folder (might differ)
edit that file and remove entry for the tools folder
and keep that file in "read only" attributes
1. already played with this option but it's not doing anything for me "disable everything other than screen calibration" ... It did work at one point
3. I don't want it on the Today screen I only want it to run the htcpower app when it's clicked.
6. "initflashfiles.dat">> no entry called "Tools" already tried that
Why does it matter if it's read-only or not?
Is there any way to make the font size smaller in email?
When I type a message, I'm lucky if I can get 3 or 4 words to a line as the font is huge!
you can change the minimum text size in the settings tab on your device try that.

Its only for received emails...
Go to the settings tab, select Menu, All Settings, System, Screen and the Text Size tab. Changing the text size with the slider there affects input and output for emails.
Edit: Actually, I've just checked and they're the same thing. If that doesn't work, you may have a problem that can't be fixed with regular UI settings.
Surely there must be a registry hack or something for this?
I can't understand why they need the font to be so big.
i heard pinch to zoom works with text. try zooming out

You heard wrong! Afraid it doesn't work
Its really odd - if I reply to a message, the old message below what I'm typing is a normal sized font - but anything I type is JUMBO!
Similar situation in SMS too - the old messages are a decent size, but what I type is huge!
I also think that font in some apps is way too big. For instance in Pocket Outlook, Calendar etc., even in Opera Mobile. I have all settings set to smallest font but it is still too big. Is there a way how to make it smaller - may be some settings in registry? It is useless to have such a big screen but to see the same number of letters as on much smaller screen.
First off, y'all need to CHILL!!
Describe your problem in more detail:
1. Has the font always been *JUMBO* sized (i.e. since you ever first got it) ?
2. Did you use any tool to change your device's font size?
* Note: there are various utilities out there that can be used to change the system font properties to ANYthing you want. Some programs you might've installed change system font properties as part of their operation.... so, backtrack, and if necessary use Total Commander to find "\windows\*.ttf" then delete all files found, then restart your phone; this will restore fonts to their original states.
Cheers
In my case, this simple setting works. Open an email message, go to menu in lower left, view, text size. I use the smallest font size, which is readable and I get 24 lines of text on screen.
Yes, settings as well as multi touch zoom are working for me too but I still would like to have much smaller font. The question is if there is a way how to enable smaller fonts with registry settings or tweak app?
Easy:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox]
"RichEditHostFontSize"="10"
You can shrink the font for replying down to 2 nano meter.
I would like to shrink the font for reading, but the registry doesn't seem to remember the setting after a softreset.
I am trying here: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox] & [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings]
Maybe anyone has an idea here...
Hey!
So, I've seen people who want their device to be more nexus, or even m8 like. The main difference between the devices, user interface wise, is the navigational buttons.
Most won't like using this, as it takes up valuable screen space, but I find it nice to have on-screen buttons and dislike having the hardware buttons (logo2menu is not my slice of pie)
So, first of all, you'll need a root explorer (which means you'll need root) I personally use ES File Explorer.
Navigate to /system and open build.prop in a text editor with root (ES Note Editor is included in ES File Explorer and has root access if you've given ES FE root)
Add this line, making sure to have a blank line afterwards (just as it was before you add this line)
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
Note: autocorrect likes to make that "hw" a "he"
Save the file and exit back to /system
Our device is awesome and has the physical buttons in its own keylayout file. Normally you'd have to search through hundreds of lines to do this, but we get to look at two.
Get to /system/use/keylayout/ and open synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl with a root text editor
Put a # behind both(/all if you have a custom kernel and want to disable logo2menu) lines
So, you'll go from
Code:
key 102 HOME
key 158 BACK
to
Code:
# key 102 HOME
# key 158 BACK
Save, exit, and reboot! Magic!
Some ROMs also have control of the button backlight (CM and PA have it under Buttons > Button Backlight) just set it to 0 seconds on the timeout.
I'm not aware of a way to disable the light on Google Play Edition Roms, although Sense ROMs (specifically Viper) usually have this control somewhere in their custom toolbox.
If anyone knows where this is in the system files, I'll be glad to add it in the OP
this is what I've been waiting for.. thanks for the tutorial! yeah I was thinking how to turn off the light on gpe rom

I actually don't know how to disable the light in GPE
I was waiting for a 4.4.4 port to actually go and look into it
Was looking for this for a while and I found the solution in the Note edge forum posted by Skenderbeggar. Basically Samsung removed the option to hide or display the brightness slider, I personally don't use it and think it takes up a lot of space. This should work with all varients.
1. Get SQLite Editor (Does cost $. but you can use it for other things too)
2. Open it, and select the FILES column
3. Scroll to the DATA folder and open it
4. Scroll to the DATA folder within it and open it
5. Scroll to the COM.ANDROID.PROVIDERS.SETTINGS folder and open it
5. Open the DATABASES folder
6. Open the "settings.db "file
7. Click on the "system" file
8. Select "notification_panel_brightness_adjustment" (number 279 on my list)
9. Change the value from 1 to 0.
10. Save, close out and reboot.
Worked, thank u. Was just asking about this on the echo thread. Now to get rid of the stock toggles so I can just have my own from the notification toggle app.
Nice, glad I could pass on some info!
Hi i need help changing dpi of only 1 application. There are many available app to change dpi for the whole phone but unable to find one for just one specific app. previous phone i used app setting with xposed to work but nougat did not find any xposed. if someone could help me change dpi of a application please help. Want to change dpi of waze if someone can teach me how to maybe even modify a apk file and change the dpi before installing that would be great too thank you.
No relies after a long time.
I too have heard nothing but crickets when asking the same question. Xposed module "App Settings" used to be my answer, but I am now on Nougat=no Xposed, as of now.
I need this for Play store. I mean really, only 3 GIANT icons across, 4 down on my 8.4" tablet. ONLY 12 FREAKING ITEMS ON SCREEN AT A TIME!? I have the room/size to easily see twice that (6 across X 8 down = 48 icons vs. 12.
Geeez!! this pisses me off. Play Store app needs a "tablet UI" setting, but for now still looking for a Per App DPI "setter" app.
okay i found one solution. it can be a temporary fix i guess.
You can use Tasker (paid; 7 day free trial) as well provided that OS is rooted.
Profile: Application → select app fro DPI scaling
Task: Action: Code → Run Shell
Command: wm density <DPI>
wm implies Window Manager. Replace <DPI> with the DPI you want.
Check Use Root
Exit task: Action: Code → Run Shell
Command: wm density reset
Check Use Root
That's it. Launch the app and the density of the whole system will change. Exit or switch the app and DPI would revert back to normal. The fluidity of the switch is not up to the level of App Settings, but it's acceptable.
copied from Firelord post.
okay basically tasker is a app that changes settings on certain settings.
you basically tell the phone to change the dpi of the whole phone when the app is run. i try to brake it down.
profile application choose playstore so when it opens
wm density <DPI> change dpi to what ever you want
exit task resets dpi of phone when you exit app. hope this helps now till xposed start working.
