Hi, first off im new to the XDA EXEC so be gentle , I've already unlocked and updated the device and now I'm just getting use to customizing it.
I've installed GSPocketMagic and although i can get it running theres a few things im unsure of.
1. it seems to slow the boot up of the device considerably, don't know why or if that might be some remnance of O2 stuff kicking around on the device.
2. The icons don't seem to blend into the themes properly. For instance the close buttons seem to be of a different colour and you can easily see that. On the main today screen when no apps are running I have an obvious discoloured sqaure in the top right hand corner. I'm guessing this might have something to do with the bmp pallettes for the images? anyone done anything about this?
3. Skining the menu , on the download site is shows its possible but i've had no luck.
it looks like a good app but its just not reaching what i need any ideas on how to configure it properly as so far from what i've seen theres limited information on it and i've not found any translations etc.
Regards

Goto Start menu > Option > Setting... and and "play" with the settings of GSPocketMagic++
Cheers
i've had a play with the settings already and could really find what I was looking for the most i've managed to do is change the startup menu button to an image but it didn't resolve the fact that the button images for say close are off colour (even if you install the VGA xscale version (as i stated before).
Also I can't see how you skin the menu so it'd look similar to that of the existing menu bar (just for continuity of the plug in). Then finally theres the fact on boot its terribly slow to start up with this addition (or so it seems). However its still a vanillia(ish) device so i could be som O2 crap kicking around that i haven't removed yet?
dunno..hence the thread.
Smallmenu and GSPocketMagic will take quite a while to generate the icon cache on first launch. Just let it do it. It doesn't do it again after the first launch unless you manually refresh. It takes about 30 seconds for me.
V
If you goto Goto Start menu > Option > Setting... and directly close de Setting page it wil refresh the cache again. You can time it how log it takes. I have about 30 shortcuts in the menu (which I pointed to \windows\start menu\programs and not the standard folder), also to the SD card, and it takes about 4 to 5 secs to refresh it.
installing GSPocketMagic
Hello downloaded it
How do I install it on the Exec
Thx.
Tim
lol
is there an update 2 this? where can i find skins?
Okay, so I've trawled the net in search of a definitive answer to this, and I know it has something to do with the tdyater image file, but I can't get mine to change.
To cover my back I decided to make the file in 3 different formats, and with 3 different names. So in my windows folder I now have:
tdywater.gif
tdywater_480_640.gif
tdywater_640_480.gif
tdywater.jpg
tdywater_480_640.jpg
tdywater_640_480.jpg
tdywater.png
tdywater_480_640.png
tdywater_640_480.png
And still the background of the start menu is just clear, with my background picture visible underneath. This isn't helpful since my background image is very busy and no font colour can make the menu clearly visible. Is there a certain size the image has to be? I'm trying to use a 640x640 image. And is there anything I need to alter in the registry to make the picture appear?
Basically I am trying to use a plain white image, so would also be happy if someone could inform me of a registry key that can change the colour of the start menu.
Thank you
Hi,
tdywater = Today screen picture
stwater = Start menu picture
My start menu picture is a darkened version of the picture I use for my today screen but you can have anything you want.
G
I have to disagree. Though that would be logical based on the file names, I have just done a little test, and my today screen background is governed by stwater_480_640.jpg (for portrait) and stwater_640_480.jpg (for landscape).
If I rename those files to tdywater, then the default windows background appears. And none of these files, be it stwater or tdywater have any effect on the start menu at all.
I sense something odd i happening with my device, since the way you said it sounds like it should be right.
But having said that, I did originally read somewhere (think it was ppcsg) that the correct filenames for portrait and landscape backgrounds were the ones I am uing, hence why I use them, and hence why they work. So basically it's just the start menu I'm struggling with.
I quote from "How to Create an Extended Theme" from Spb Pocket Plus:

# Select your Today screen image (tdywater.gif) from the folder you created. Press Next.
# Select your Start menu image (stwater.gif) from the folder you created. Press Next.
These have been the standard filenames for the images for as long as I can remember...

Well bugger the standard. If you read my posts you will see that is not the case on my device. Suppose I'll just keep trying
Are you just copying the images onto the device or using a TSK theme file?
I could never get it to work just copying the images.
This was the program which was recommended to me for building TSK files:
http://www.codeppc.com/telechargements/themegence/themegence.htm
Or do what I did for my first theme and use a CAB editor and just change the images in an existing theme
Not doubting you that it's not working on your device, just not a lot I can do but offer you the information which I have.
Hope this helps
G
Found a way round it
1. Make the theme using the standard microsoft theme generator
2. Apply it on the device
3. delete tdywater.gif
4. Insert my own tdywater_480_640.jpg and tdywater_640_480.jpg files
5. Bingo!
Only thing is, I have to re-do most of that (from step 2 onwards) every time I soft reset, because by default my universal is showing stwater as the background image (ie: a think white bar which I have as my start menu background). It only recognises tdywater after applying a theme
Just use Wisbar!!

Guys,
I've not been getting enough time to work on ShantzTodayChanger anymore (and couple that with the irritation of having to boot into windows just to work into this). The motivation levels are simply not there. I'm trying to see if there is someone willing to take up and continue development for this, so that I can release the source code. If anyone is interested, please drop me a word at the project's home page: Shantz Today Changer Home Page

This small tool will cycle ur today background or theme after a set interval of time.
Usage:
1. Make a folder on ur device (preferably not on storage card.) and extract all the files (mainly ShantzTodayChanger.exe, TdyChangerCfg.exe, gsgetfile.dll (might not be visible to u depending on ur explorer settings) and Readme.htm) to this folder.
2. IMP: Do not rename any files.
3. Run the TdyChangerCfg.exe.
4. Set options through the dialog that opens and press apply button (Pressing the native WM OK button will discard all your changes)
5. Options:
i)Choose image type (.gif\.jpg\.png) or theme(.tsk) to be cycled.
ii)If the input files (images or themes) are not in the folder where exes are kept, then you can check the box (underneath the .gif option) and give the "FULL and ABSOLUTE" path of where the files are kept. You can either input the path thru keyboard or choose it graphically by pressing the button (...) next to it.
iii)If you want to run a file after every cycle interval, check the corresponding box and provide the "FULL and ABSOLUTE" path of the file to be run. You can either input the path thru keyboard or choose it graphically by pressing the button (...) next to it.
iv) If you want some files to be avoided during cycling, put a file mask. The program will look for this mask to appear anywhere in the name of the files and will avoid it if found. (Wildcards are not supported. Choose time option has to be checked for this to work)
v) Choose the period for which mask option has to be used. If you choose a time period and leave mask as empty, then during that time no cycling will be done. If you want to avoid some files all the time, then time period should be chosen to cover all 24 hrs of the day.
vi)enter the desired interval between cycling of images\themes.
vii)If you choose a period for the mask, another check box (Consider mask period for exe also) will be enabled. Checking this box will mean that the specified exe will be run only if an image\theme is changed during that cycle. If you dont check this, then exe will be run after every cycle even if there is no change in the image\theme.
6. When you want to stop the cycling, press "STOP Cycling" button.
Additional Notes:
1. I've tested it only on my WM6 HTC Wizard and WM5 emulator. Might work with other devices/OS's but not sure...
2. Doesnt have to be running constantly. So saves resources when not active.
3. Survives soft resets as well.
4. Even takes care of the situation if your phone is off when the time to cycle is reached. Will cycle as soon as ur phone comes back on in this situation.
Planned Updates:
i) Suggestions invited. I have a lot of updates in mind but will incorporate those only which are requested by you.
Known Issues:
i) If the mask option is selected, then in a very particular situation, the app will miss a cycle.
This can be taken care of but not in my priority list because this can be fixed only by rewriting the complete cycling code which is quite a bit. So, will fix it if I get some time from my other projects.
ii) If after maknig the configuration, you see the screen flash for a second at the right times, but the backfround doesn't change, then do this:
- Go to : Settings...today....appearance
- un-check "Use this picture as background"
- start the program using "startTodayChanger.lnk" or TdyChangerCfg (Apply button)
(Thnx to CWKJ for reporting this bug and fix, and to eric for reminding me about it)
End Note:
Like every software, this one is also bound to have bugs, please report it asap.
Though ShantzTodayChanger does not run continuously but sometimes some apps that close all processes automatically (like SPB backup) might clash in schedule with ShantzTodayChanger and close it when it starts to run. In such a case (which is quite unlikely), the app might not be able to set a notification for next cycle, so if u face this situation, then run the config again.

nice release...will try it soon
Hey Shantz! thanks so much for this, unfortunatley it doesn't run on my Hermes!
And I don't know how to debug it so you can take a look at it.
Feature request: JPG or PNG support would be great. Also, a way to specify where the files reside, maybe command line? If argument is not present at command line, then default to install directory (program root)
Thanks Shantz!!
Dax.
@dax: well, I'll add a config module soon for the image paths etc.
Will see if jpg/png support is feasible enuff...
About the hermes, i'll send you a debug build and try to run that. But first of all, tell me whether you can find a registry entry "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ShantzTodayChanger" and if its there then can you tell me the objects present inside it along with their values...

Hi
Just made this. This small tool will cycle ur today background / wallpaper after a set interval of time.
Usage:
1. Make a folder on ur device (preferably not on storage card. Its just 8KB anyways) and extract the ShantzTodayChanger.exe to this folder.
2. Copy the image files that you want to set as ur today background to this folder.
[bold]IMP:The files should be gif and moreover, the size (widthxheight) of the images should be taken care of by you in advanced, otherwise they might be stretched or cropped[/bold]
3. Run the ShantzTodayChanger.exe.
4. This will create two shortcuts in ur folder. startTdyChngr.lnk and stopTdyChngr.lnk.
5. Now just run startTdyChngr.lnk. The default time gap between cycling is 600sec. You can modify the shortcut to choose ur own time (in sec).
6. When you want to stop the cycling, just run stopTdyChngr.lnk.
Additional Notes:
1. You can create your own shortcuts if you want. Basically the ShantzTodayChanger.exe works on following command line arguments (without the quotes):
i) "-g 600" - start cycling images. replace 600 by ur own time in seconds. Keep it more than 1 minute preferably.
ii) "-s" - stop cycling.
iii) "-c" - cycle immediately. DONT USE THIS OPTION. MIGHT CREATE PROBLEMS.
2. I've tested it only on my WM6 HTC Wizard and WM5 emulator. Might work with other devices/OS's but not sure...
3. It runs only when wallpaper has to be changed. So saves resources when not active.
4. Survives soft resets as well.
5. Even takes care of the situation if your phone is off when the time to cycle is reached. Will cycle as soon as ur phone comes back on in this situation.

cool,
i was actually thinking of something like this...
feature request????
how about changing the entire theme....
(what i am planning here is having different themes during different times of the day)
along with it say can you make it check the time (say instead of 600s i would like to change it at 12, 3, 6 and 9...)
whole theme changer(tsk), which will change system solors would be WROBG
@fallenCzar: Whole Theme Changer isn't on the list right now...Maybe I can work on it when I get a few other things together first..
along with it say can you make it check the time (say instead of 600s i would like to change it at 12, 3, 6 and 9...)

Do you mean, you want to change it at a specific time of the day? Hmmm, I may try to include an option to specify the "cycle start time" along with the gap, which should take care of this...
not working on my o2 XDA II mini win 2003SE.it says not a valid pocket pc....
@Sathya: It works only on WM5 and WM6. I'll see if just a simple compilation for the WM2003 platform will work and let you know...
@ALL: Those who have tried it on their WM5/WM6 devices, please let me know if its working ok for you or not.
BTW, i've started working on a few updates, check in Post #1..I think I'll make two versions for this, a normal one and an extended one, so that those who want a smaller footprint can use the normal version...
Hey seem to be a nice work shantzg001, checking it out soon ...
Thnx Shailesh, did u get time to run it??
do not work on my Trinity
Shantz,
Just seen this. Many many thanks for your efforts here, most appreciated.
Not had chance to try it yet but most reports sem to be coming back that it doesn't seem to work on a Tytn/WM5 machine? What's your take on that?
Cheers
WB
Hmmm, it works perfectly on my WM6 HTC Wizard and the WM5 emulator as well...Not getting any time right now to look more..Will post a debug build tonight..But can someone please check the registry. I had said earlier also to check under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ShantzTodayChanger, to report back what all settings exist there, after you have completed all the process...
Found some problems with the code...Have removed the utility till further notice...
Found out part of the problem by inspecting a colleague's device...Its because of how some devices behave to background change if themes are installed..
Will make the change when i go back home tonight and also see if there is any other problem...
Fixed the bug...It should be ok now for all WM5/WM6 devices..
With 1.11 it now works fine!
Is it possible to make it work not only with gif files but with tsk too
This thread is for those who use the HTC Lockscreen and who:
A) Like the slider at the top of the screen, but are looking for a fix for that pesky 3-4 second delay before it becomes responsive. For this method, you can either apply the reg edit below in "UPDATED FIX 1-Dec-2010 Registry Edit Fix", install the attached cab and follow the instructions in the "UPDATE 1-Jan-2010 paragraph" or install the startup exe. as per UPDATE 30-March-2010;
and for those who...
B) would like to flip the slider from the top to the bottom. For this, I highly recommend HeartofWolf's Lockscreen fix located here http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=363. There are plenty of mods that move the slider to the bottom, but the benefit of his cab is that the calendar notification icon disappears once a calendar event has expired. The downside for me is that the slider is resized a bit too skinny. If you install the cab and find the slider to be too small and would prefer the slider to be the normal oem size, I have modified the LS_Lockscene_480x800.cpr to do just that. Further in the mod, I have moved the slider up from the bottom to be at approximately thumb height. To install the modified LS_Lockscene_480x800.cpr:
1)You will first need to install HeartofWolf's Lockscreen fix V4, if you haven't already.
2)Download and unzip the LS_Scene_480x800_modification file below.
3) Move the LS_Scene_480x800.cpr file to your device and copy and paste it into the lockscreen folder located in File Explorer->Windows->Lockscreen.
4) Soft-Reset. You're done.
Note: If you install HeartofWolf's cab, there is no need to install the registry delay fix. Flipping the slider from top to bottom solves the delay. If you later uninstall the cab, you may lose the lockscreen. If that happens, no problem, just copy the original lockscreen files also attached below back into the Lockscreen file in File Explorer->Windows and soft-reset.
TIP: Slider Notifications
If you use the notification sliders to access missed calls, voicemail, email etc. , but wished the voicemail slider called your voicemail instead of taking you to your dialpad or the email slider went to your inbox instead of the manila tab, then take a look at the following thread by Da_G:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4268138&postcount=3
___________________________________________
History and Updates
UPDATED 21-April-2010 Fixed each of the notification sliders' position in LS_Lockscene 480x800 so as not to overlap the unlock slider. When I moved the unlock slider up further from the bottom to be at approximate thumb height, I did not adjust the notification sliders up along with it. So, when you had more than one notification and the sliders dropped down, one or two would overlap the unlockslider. That has been adjusted.
UPDATED 30-March-2010 Thanks and big credits to Trueg who created a start up exe. that will run the reg edit at start up. The beauty of his exe is that in the past if you realigned your screen, on your next softreset, the delay would return, at which point you would have to reinstall the cab or reapply the reg edit and soft reset. What Trueg's exe. does is run the reg edit on each start-up. So each time you reset your phone, the reg edit that solves the delay automatically runs.
To install:
1. Download and unzip the "setFirstCal" file below.
2. Copy and paste the setFirstCal.exe inside your "StartUp" folder located in File Explorer->Windows->StartUp.
3. Softreset. Done.
If you choose this method, there is no need to install the cab or apply the reg edit. This will take care of everything for you.
UPDATED 1-Jan-2010 Cab file for Registry Edit is now available below. Credit and thanks to cduijker. After installing, please remember to soft reset. If for some reason the cab does not work for you, check to see if you have the registry setting as discussed below in the "UPDATED FIX 12/1/09". If you do not have the setting then it appears this fix is not the solution for you.
UPDATED 1-Dec-2010 Registry Edit Fix
For those who would like to fix the lockscreen delay, but would prefer to do so without having to hardreset or reflash, I have the fix for you. Before I begin I would like to give a BIG thanks and credit to kieboy for testing this edit and providing feedback!
Open your favorite registry editor and navigate to:
1) HKLM\Hardware\DeviceMap\Keybd
2) look for the entry named: FirstCalibration
3) If it's there, you can do one of two things 1) delete it or 2) as suggested to me by kieboy, you can change the dword value from 1 to 0.
4) softreset. To be sure, I recommend a manual softreset using your stylus opposed to a softreset program. I've tested this fix on a couple of roms and one of the softreset programs would not allow the fix to take.
5) bring up the lockscreen in "start", push the power button to turn the screen off (standby) and then back on. The slider should immedietely respond.
If it doesn't work, you can always realign your screen and the deleted or changed value should reappear after a softreset.
Please note: From time to time you may need to realign your screen. If you do, remember to go back into the registry and perform the edit again. The reason being is that manually aligning the screen creates the value "FirstCalibration", which appears, at least in part, to be the culprit causing the delay.
Also note that on occassion the slider gets stuck on one side or the other depending on which way you slide it. If it sticks, just tap the slider and it will unlock. Doesn't happen very ofter, but it does happen.
If you would like to solve the delay by avoiding the screen alignment process altogether after each hard reset or flash, please continue reading below.
November 22, 2009 Alternative Solution
The lockscreen delay is nothing new and has been defined around the forum as a 2-3 second delay between the time the device is woken up from standby and the time the slider becomes responsive to either unlock the device or access the slider notifications. Indeed, in the past there have been some excellent fixes: mindfrost82, tommy34 and heartofwolf, just to name a few. By in large, these fixes are edits to .Cpr files and in most cases no longer work, except for heartofwolf, on the newer manila 2.1 and 2.5 roms with the HTC Lockscreen. The heartofwolf fix, however, resizes the slider and puts it at the bottom of the screen, which at the time was the known protocol to fix the delay. It should be noted that using a password to unlock is a fix too. Some are not bothered by the delay while others are. I myself like the slider instantly responsive and accesible once the screen is on. If you fall into the latter category I may have a fix.
I believe the slider delay is the direct result of manual screen calibration or aligning the screen during initial set up after either a new rom flash or hard reset. If you skip the "welcome" process, i.e. screen alignment, date and time setting etc. you will also skip the process that creates the delay. What in manual screen alignment is linked to the delay is something I am looking into.
The solution, as I see it for now, is to skip or bypass the screen alignment process altogether. Some Chefs do this already, namely Dutty, to among other things speed up the set up process.
How to do it: there are a couple of ways you can find in the forum, however, one way is to:
1) Create a blank text file on your PC and name it, welcome.not Be sure it does not save as welcome.not.txt or it won't work. If so, remove the .txt.
2) Next, place the text file in the root of your storage card.
3) Now, flash a new rom or hard reset and you're done.
Another way:
1) Open file explorer on your device.
2) Go to the root directory of your storage card.
3) With your stylus or finger, tap and hold the screen and wait for the menu to pop open.
4) from th menu create a new file and name it welcome.not
5) Now you can hard reset or flash a new rom.
It's up to you whether you leave your SD in during flash. I do not. If you do not, after the rom flash, stick your SD in and hard reset. If all goes to plan, the "welcome" phase will be bypassed, and you will not be prompted to align the screen or set the date, location, time etc.
To test and see if there is no delay, once the device is set up, go to the start menu, press the lock button at the bottom of the screen. When the lock pops up, turn your screen off. Wait a second or two and turn it back on. The slider should respond instantly. NOTE: if you go into settings and manually align the screen, upon soft reset, the delay will be back.
The screen coordinates should load automatically after the bypass. If for any reason you need them, here are the Blackstone alignment coordinates from HKLM/Hardware/Devicemap/Touch/ Calibrationdata:
511,542 183,881 183,198 834,197 883,880.
S3
Thanks for the useful info!
I also don't like the delay in lockscreen slider, so at next flash I will test it.
EDIT: I tested it and works great!!!
Thanks!!!
I stopped calibrating my screen, because it seemed unnecessary. My screen seems to work flawlessly without it.
Btw - I'm using LIA 13.5 MobileShell version without manila. I didn't calibrate and I have no delay when it wakes up. You might be onto something!
Rob
@jolas, Excellent! Did you use a blank text file or a blank file folder inside the SD root?
@Rob, I was hoping someone who did this as a matter of course would post!

@jolas, Excellent! Did you use a blank text file or a blank file folder inside the SD root?

I use a blank text file (welcome.not).
Wow super tip, thank you Sean3
The welcome.not empty file works for me on L26HDLEOV3 as well
The screen react the second it wakes
//M
im not quite sure if i do something wrong in the process, but when i flash energy 28005 rom from sd card, it doesnt skip the screen allignment.
i created a blank welcome.not .txt file and put it in the sd card as described, but nothing happens...
i hate the delay, can anyone help me?

The file needs to be named welcome.not instead of welcome.not.txt. Just remove the .txt and you should be good to go.

the file is already named welcome.not. the ".txt" was to show that its a text file...
Edit: ok, you were right. now i removed the .txt bit.
gonna try again tomorrow.
Hope you can find the culprit for this delay for someone like me who cannot afford to do a hard reset..so troublesome. Thanks for the tip though.
I think I found it. See Edit at the top of post #1.
i don't have that key on my Hong Kong machine english rom.... I have done a calibration before and did it once more but it is still not there.. and yes i have about a 1 to 2 seconds delay... cheers...

Are you using an HD, HD2 or other? If HD, what rom are you using and what is the winmo and manila build? If you get a chance, could you list the keys that you do have?
good stuff - props given and sticky requested!
this definitly works....good work...should be added to the wiki
Thread has been stickied. Obviously if a permanent fix is already embedded into future roms or if this fix becomes obsolete I will remove it from being stickied
Hi, I cant seem to do this because:
1. The today link doesnt show up in file explorer or resco file explorer even with 'show all files' checked, so I dont see anyway to remove it.
2. Interactive appears to be some sort of tmobile crap installed ( I think ) which I can delete, but comes back with every soft reset, I have applied the cab to stop files such as htc_people coming back, but 'interactive' isnt affected
Any solutions guys?
ME TOO!
Anyone got an answer to this? Its really annoying me how I have to put up with that random icon that cant be changed, an ugly pimple among the loverly Metro icons I have.
